Limit? How about NONE. A sick cow should not be in the food stream. If they are giving the antibiotics for non-health related reasons, STOP IT - YOU ARE KILLING ME!
This is the most stupid thing EVER. Giving antibiotics willy-nilly for a extremely minor increase in yield is a PERFECT example of what should NEVER be allowed. All this does, other than make a few VERY RICH people even richer (the small farmers are NOT the ones doing most of it), is breed drug resistant bacteria.
It is painfully obvious that the FDA should have done this decades ago. It's laughable when conservatives complain about burdensome regulations, given the extremely lax restrictions on things like this.
So the FDA might do something useful in the near future? I'm impressed . I was starting to think that their ONLY job was to appease the pharmaceutical industry.
The rampant use of antibiotics for growth acceleration in livestock should have been stopped years, if not decades, ago. That the FDA has to urge this action instead of having the ability to stop the abuse of these drugs is disturbing and laughable.
Honestly, they should simply put a complete ban in place on antibiotic use on livestock. Given the increasing number of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the world today, animals that are going to be slaughtered for food shouldn't have antibiotics administered ever.
Both the FDA and USDA have been remiss for the past forty years in protecting our food supplies. A few very big chemical and food processing companies control most of the food supply in the U.S. and most of their policies are directed at increasing their bottom line rather than nutritional quality or protecting the public's health. The wide-spread use of antibiotics in food animals to keep them alive under horrific conditions in feed lots or huge sheds have resulted in the development of superbugs resistant to almost all of the antibiotics we have for the treatment of infections. The routine use of growth hormones to stimulate egg or milk production and to put weight on food animals faster should also be stopped. The anatomy of chickens has been altered to produce the huge breasts we prefer but has resulted in the chickens not being able to walk. The restriction of movement, absence of sunlight, not being allowed to walk around or outdoors, standing or lying in feces and filth 24 hours a day and being fed #2 field corn rather than grasses or other natural foods for the animals are a scandal and most Americans have no idea what goes into that tender, well marbled steak or huge chicken breast. USDA should be prohibiting the patenting of seeds; should prohibit making seeds sterile to keep farmers buying seed rather than saving seed from one year for the next; the use of genetically modified foods should be required to be labelled--American consumers are the subjects for the natural experiment of the long-term effects of using bacteria and viruses to introduce genes from other species into food products. Several European countries no longer import certain foods from the U.S. since GM foods are not labelled. Agribusiness practices require the use of more and more pesticides and unfortunately most are nondiscriminate and kill beneficial as well as "pest" insects. We have experienced massive die-offs and abandoning of hives of important pollinators such as the honey bee--scientists still don't know what has caused the die-off or what contributed to it but we are dependent on pollinators for food crops. And when you poison the prey, you poison the predator. It is almost impossible to buy any processed food in our grocery stores that is packaged, canned or frozen that doesn't have High Fructose Corn Syrup made from #2 field corn in it or another sweetener from #2 field corn--even foods we don't think are sweet. Big food processors are spending millions of dollars on advertisements attempting to reassure consumers that HFCS is no different than any other sweetener and that it's no big deal--it is a big deal. There's no mystery why Americans have such trouble losing weight or keeping it off between the growth hormones and HFCS in almost everything we buy at our grocery stores. The FDA and USDA are understaffed, underfunded and are subjected to political pressures constantly but both agencies should do more to protect our families' health. I have completely changed my eating habits and food buying after reading and watching the excellent documentaries that have come out in the last few years. I try to buy organic foods and foods produced or grown by local farmers. I believe in fair trade and am willing to pay more for food that is grown or produced in sustainable ways that is better for the soil, pollinators, water supply, food animals, farmers and the consumer and produces a healthier and higher quality of food that we eat. Educating ourselves and reading labels on processed foods have become very important and we really cannot trust that our governmental agencies are protecting us or our food supply.
I totally agree! Our food industry is a time bomb waiting to go off. If the antibiotics help so much, why are there still huge recalls all the time? The slaughterhouses are horrid and unclean, no wonder the meat is contaminated. The conditions in the large industry cattle food lots are horrid. 2 great shows to watch are King Corn and Food Inc. Food Inc gives a great look at the inside of these places and how our food is prepared. You won't want to touch meat from a store again. We don't anymore. We only buy local now so we know where our meat is coming from.
I agree. This should not be a guideline but a standard. I’m from a ranch, I only eat meat from Mt ranches. The overuse of antibiotics and growth hormones is insane and its affecting everyone that is eating this meat. You do NOT need to pump animals full of these things if their living conditions are clean, they are fed what animals are supposed to eat, aka not mutated corn or the blood of their own species, and have the space to grow and live.

How about making them stop using growth hormones while they are at it.
