If you are drinking while you are pregnant, your future son's sperm count should be the least of your worries. If that is the kind of intelligence you hold, that you would drink while pregnant, your gene pool should come to a screeching halt. Seriously.
How about, "drinking alcohol while pregnant will harm your son, deform them, cause severe mental health issues". Of course the women that drink while pregnant don't read the news or search the Internet. They are generally laying around on the dirty sofa in a trailer while their "baby's daddy" is manufacturing Meth in the bed room.
Dear God! A low sperm count is nothing compared to the other harmful effects to the fetus when a woman drinks during pregnancy! As the adoptive mom of a child with fetal alcohol syndrome, I live daily with the extreme damage that can result. Here's a partial list for your consideration... mental retardation, growth retardation, physical abnormalities such as abnormal brain structure, poor or non-existent social skills, severe impulsivity, poor motor function, poor memory, sensory processing disorder, seizures, OCD behaviors, ADHD behaviors, lack of empathy, sociopathic behaviors... Do you really need to hear more to know that consuming alcohol while pregnant is like playing Russian roulette with your unborn child's life?
Like the woman who drinks when they're pregnant worries about the babies sperm? HELLO - do you think this bogus study is going to change anyone's mind on drinking when expecting? It amazes me the amount of money spent on studies that mean nothing. At least this time it was Danish money and not US money.
I agree with all of the comments above. BUT I don't think the intent of the study was to help the mother make better choices...they are thinking of themselves. But male infertility is on the rise and there is a lot of research being done to try to learn why and what can be done to help couples with this problem to have families. Infertility is extremely difficult to cope with so I am grateful that studies are being done. So while a "young drunk mama" isn't going to change because of this study, and far worse things will happen to the fetus in a "drunk mama", this study could potentially help "young responsible parents" who struggle with not being able to have a baby at all actually be able to overcome fertility someday. How wonderful would that be?
I'm 7.5 months pregnant now. I would never consider drinking during pregnancy - just not a big deal for me to abstain. I read the message boards on Baby Center and the drinking issue seems to come up more frequently than I would have expected. Usually a mother-to-be will post something to the effect of "Do you think a wine or beer is okay?...etc" and you get a mix of posters encouraging her to abstain and other posters going on and on about people in European countries who drink while pregnant or their grandmothers/mothers etc who drank each day w pregnancy. People don't seem to understand, if YOU are feeling the effects of the alcohol, your unborn baby is really feeling it and they don't have a choice in the matter. I think these types of studies may help people that can abstain but are on the fence to rethink that glass of wine they were going to have a few times a week. Previous posters are right though, for the true substance abusing mother-to-be, these studies will have no effect -- too busy trying to get their next fix to remember they are pregnant in the first place.
PERMANENT brain damage. THAT is what could happen. Why chance that?
If a warning came out and said that eating ice cream during pregnancy could cause your child to be born with a 12 inch long nose, my unscientific guess says more women wouldn't even THINK of eating ice cream while pregnant.
The problem is that many women don't even know they are pregnant while drinking. Most women DO stop when they find out they are pregnant. Unfortunately, some damage may have already been done.
I understand that it is taught to us that alcohol causes severe abnormalities in a fetus... But, you should all learn a little bit more about it: Doctors generally agree that a small amount of alcohol will not harm the fetus in the third trimester. Now, I'm not saying to drink daily, but if a pregnant woman in her 3rd trimester has a glass of wine with dinner or a beer from time to time, her fetus will be fine.
Your body has the ability to process the alcohol of one drink. That's why you don't get drunk off one drink. It's when you drink several drinks back to back that the body cannot handle - and THAT would cause problems for the fetus.

Caileagh
That is what I was thinking too but you put it in kinder words than I would have.

Smoking while pregnant is just as bad...and selfish
