I used to take Avandia, but KlaxoSmithKline was so proud of it that the price was outrageous and kept going up. I even bought some from Canada at a cheaper price but then their price went up and I thought, "What's wrong with this picture?" because Canadian prices are government controlled. So I wasn't sure what I was getting or where it was coming from and couldn't afford it anyway. Then KlaxoSmithKline was afraid they were missing out on some profit and quit selling to Canada.
Sure glad I quit when I did, which was about 10 years ago. New wonder drugs are more wonder than they should be. I don't know how they make it onto the market when the approval takes years. Is the FDA doing their job properly, or not?
The FDA is struggling no doubt. They are overworked and understaffed. That being said, and to your point, new drugs are throughly tested, sometimes in thousands of patients before going to the market. The FDA sometimes requires additional studies above and beyond what is normally required depending on the issues. Keep in mind though that just because a drug shows no or little risk in clinical trials it's never a gurantee it'll be risk free once millions of people take the product after approval. With a larger population to pool data from you will alway find issues. It's just simple statistics.
Remember too sometimes the FDA caves to public pressure, and unfortunatley the general public just isn't qualified to make these tough decisions.
The FDA new about this four years ago when other studies drew the same conclusion. Only now when it's happening to alot more people do they finally do something. Do you have a Clue who does the "thoroughly testing" on these drugs? The drug companies themselves.
I have used Avandia for the last 12 years without any problems but I can't imagine that the researchers who claim that it causes heart problems have anything to gain by their falsifying their findings so I tend to give them some credence. I also take Celebrex for arthritis problems and it, too, is suspect in this regard. I think that the one should be aware of the risks involved with any medication they are currently taking and weigh the risks of continuing or halting use.
In 2001 my wife was prescribed avandia. After reading the complete text in PDR and less than one month
I notice a change in her sleep, severe edema, irregular heart rhythum and hypertension plus other
problems. We contacted her encrinologist and asked him change her medication to a sulfonylurea and insulin injections. If doctors would read the PDR complete text on meds they prescirbe they would not prescibe these dagerous poison "drugs".I feel that most doctor only read information provided by drug companies.
I have taken Advandia for approximately 6-8 years through the VA for agent orange related diabetes. I also take 2 other older diabetes drugs. I quit the Avandia 2 weeks ago and switched to Actos but only after long thought. I'd never had a problem with Avandia but my heart rhythm has changed, almost impossible to pick up with a pulse-oxy, when it changed I'm not sure but believe it has happened in the last 2 years. Because I read a lot I knew of Advandia problems and also of some of the same symptoms with Actos. I reduced the amount of Acots by 1/2 just to check on the swelling problems I'd read about. Well, in 2 weeks my blood sugars are more stable, no swelling & in fact maybe somewhat less. When I was at the Wellness Center on Wednesday the pulse-oxy picked up my pulse. I will have an EKG ran in September and can't wait to see if any of the irregularities have disappeared.
I still believe the best medicine for type II diabetics is weight loss, exercise
and strength training.
namedoc, you were right to have that swelling checked out. That's what happened to me on Actos, except no doctor would listen to me. I have no idea why they were so blind that they couldn't see that my legs were all blisters and seeping and swollen to three times their size.
I finally went to an N.D. instead of an M.D. I was taken off of Actos. My diabetes is still under control through diet and exercise, I've lost 140 pounds in five years, walk 3 hours a day, and feel fantastic. Actos is not a good drug!
Many are now substituting Actos for Advandia. In my opinion this is a poor choice. Actos almost killed me. Both drugs should be taken off the market. Unfortunately, the FDA gets so much money from drug companies, I really doubt anything will be done.
Thank you for your input, I'll be aware of any changes. Sounds like you took the correct steps in taking control of the problem yourself, I wish you continued success!
I'm changing doctors NOW!! (Like yesterday!!) I've been on Avandia (Avandamet) since I was diagnosed about 6 years ago. Since the first of the year I have had a series of tests due to "palpitations", including echocardiogram, Holter scan, cardiac stress test. I was told my heart rhythym is slightly abnormal, but nothing to require treatment.
Recently I began to experience extremely high blood pressure, as well as cholesterol numbers which doubled since the first of the year (except the HDL, of course). My overall number was around 150; now it's in the 300's. I asked about the Avandia. Dr. said, "it's not a problem. Stay on it."
I just looked at my online test results from the clinic. The last EKG done for surgery scheduled in June states: "Septal infarct , age undetermined Abnormal ECG". And he had his nurse call to say everything was fine for the surgery!!
P.S. Having just had my right knee replaced and left ankle fused, I can now start getting the extra exercise I know I need. I've been able to maintain my weight through this, but will now be better able to lose some of that, too.
Beware of Actos. My 74 year old diabetic father was put on Actos a couple of months ago and experienced a rapid weight gain, even though he ate the same meticulous, healthy diet and exercised every day. When my mom reported dad's 20 pound weight gain to the doctor, the doctor brushed it off and joked, "No more pizza for you!" My dad dropped dead of heart failure on May 25th (the same day he was pronounced "healthy as horse" by his doctor). I learned from doing my own internet research that Actos increases the fat cells in your body to counterbalance the insulin and to report ANY rapid weight gain immediately to your doctor. I also learned that studies have shown that while Actos does decrease blood sugar, it also raises your risk for HEART FAILURE and that Avandia raises your risk for HEART ATTACK. We learned this information too late to save my dear father...I hope that this information will help others. Don't assume your doctor knows or understands all of the side effects of a drug. Do your own research. Report any side effects, and if the doctor brushes off your concerns, find a new doctor.
if avandia is so good and no risk why while on it my husband had 10 i repeat 10 heart attacks and is now left with only 40% of his heart has had numerous bypasses and life flighted. since being off this medication no more heart attacks why? thank you

What concerns me about these drugs that were approved for use by the FDA ten years ago worked pretty well and only now are doctors and scienctist worry about their side affects. Avandia is for people that have diabetes, people with diabetes also have heart related problems. So why no is Avandia associated with heart deads. If a person was using Avandia for 10 years, the probablity of their heart problems have probably gotten worst. Of the people using Avandia, how many of them are following diet regiment that go with using the drug, and how many of those people exercised, probably very few. How do these doctor really know that Avandia is what lead to their heart conditions, most people with diabetes are obese, most have heart diease, most have a poor diet, and most do not exercise. Everything that I mentioned are not side affects, they are things people need to do if they have diabetes and heart diease. If people had a choice between controlling their diabetes with a pill or diet, most would pick pill. Drugs are not the all cure and doesn't mean that you don't have to make life style changes, drugs work well when making the life style changes. I take cholestrol medication, that doesn't mean I can eat anything I want, I still watch my diet and exercise everyday, that is what keep my cholestrol at acceptable levels. Maybe doctors need to pay closer attention to patients heart health when precribing Avandia, may mom took diabetes medication but also took cholestrol medication. Maybe older diabetes patients needed to be monitored for heart diease and they should of been on an asprin regiment. Everyone knows the side effects of the medication they are taking and they have to decide what is in the best interest for their health. If you do not want to deal with the side effects, they don't take the medication, if the medication will improve your quality of life then you have to decide what you want. Diabetes is one of those illness that can be controlled by diet and exercise. People everyday with diabetes come off their medication because they take control of their health. I don't know why people with diabetes don't try diet and exercise, this is what will give you the best quality of life and it cheap, why pay for medication when you don't have too. I hope the FDA does not take Avandia off the market and gets doctor to monitor patients that use Avandia for heart diease.
When is big pharma going to start coming up with cures in lieu of symptom maskers? Let's take cancer for example. I am 60 y.o. and I can't remember a time when chemo and/or radiation wasn't the best, latest and greatest treatment available. Today, that statement is still true. The American Cancer Society has been around, as far as I can recall, most if not all of my life and probably longer. They have been a very popular and preferred recipient of charitable donations for many decades. I would think they have received tens if not hundreds of billions in funding over the many decades they've been in existence. Maybe, just maybe, they should remind themselves of the Einstein quote that insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result! Why not try a different approach? Isn't it more than obvious by now that chemo/radiation is not a cure? Or maybe, just maybe, they actually have already gotten the results they have been seeking - billions and billions in funding! If you subscribe to the idea that big pharma is big business, just like any other big business, they keep both eyes on the bottom line - period! And a cure could make a deep, deep cut in revenues. Cancer is just one such disease. Diabetes, arthritis, all the facets of mental diseases (depression, bipolarity, schizophrenia, et. al.) AIDS, malaria, the list goes on and on. No "known cures". Give me a break! Give us all a break! "You got disease "X"? Take this pill. It has a few nagging side effects like heart disease, IBS, liver infections, nausea, dry mouth, thoughts of suicide, etc., but if you experience any of these, we have another pill for you to mask those symptoms." Big pharma=big business=big money. People need to get off they're lazy duffs and research. I did and after 3 months of excruciating clicking on the net, I found a CURE for my hep-C. It can be done. The truth really is out there. Use this incredible tool called the internet for something worthy of your time spent on it instead of just being nosy about the latest on the Lindsey Lohans. The sanity you will feel and gain is almost worth it itself. The cure you will find is definitely worth it. I'm just saying!!
I took Avandia a few years ago but had to stop because it left my leg muscles in such pain. I walk daily and this drug was about to interfere with this. I have been taking Metformin along with insulin and I'm doing great, no pain and continue to exercise daily including strength training. I didn't experience heart problems but the leg pain was awful. I'm thankful that I don't take this medication.
I took avandia for eight years and immediately gained 35 pounds despite dieting.
I found out it was avandia that put the weight on and lost it when I immediately refused to take this med. Also in 2007 I had a heart attack and since then have had breathing problems.
I now take lantus and humilin R and Metformin.
It is ironic that with diabetes you are to keep your weight down but Avandia in some people
I have type 2
causes the huge weight gain around the middle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Therefore, Avandia should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis. The coadministration of Avandia and insulin is not recommended. The use of Avandia with nitrates is not recommended
Chloramphenicol therefore controls the numbers of bacteria causing an infection, and the remaining bacteria die or are killed by the body's immune system. This treats the infection.
