I'm glad there are new rules governing eggs because I have been ill far too many times from them. In fact, I no longer eat them. It's not just the farmer and the egg transporters, however, who need to refrigerate the eggs. Grocery stores need to do this. I have walked into the back areas where foods waiting to be stocked are kept. Time after time there are huge stacks of eggs just sitting there. No wonder I get sick from eating eggs.
Its about time;I get frustrated picking up cartons of eggs that are busted at my local supermarket. I vote the milk and egg section at supermarkets get double staffed to assure the supplies are available and cut down on storage issues that create bacteria sickness
Refrigerating eggs will not stop you from being sick. If there is already salmonella in the egg which is passed through the egg wall while still inside the chicken, refrigerating it will do nothing to stop it from making you sick.
It is highly likely that you have developed either an intolerance and/or allergy to eggs.
Secondly, I fail to understand why this is placed on the heads of the farmers. Really. This should be treated like any other raw ingredient, ie. raw ground meat. It is not really meant to be eaten undercooked. If you do, then it isn't the fault of the farmer but of the preparer. If I get sick from eating something I have prepared with individual ingredients, and I am the one that incorrectly prepared it, it is my fault, not the company that supplied the ingredient.
Finally, and this is my own opinion based on 16+ years in the food industry (disclaimer) is that our food source is too sanitary. Therefore, our bodies cannot build up immunity to these organisms should we be exposed to them in small doses.
The story reports that the FDA, not the president has indicated that this will lower salmonella cases by 60% and this is due to increased testing not refrigeration. read the story people!
Another right-wing zealot who obviously didn't read the article is heard from. Attention Rite2Life: It concerns the FDA's new safety regulations for egg handling, not the Obama administration.
I guess these people don't realize how ignorant they appear when they post OMG doggeral in every Newsvine discussion, regardless of the topic, and how this foolish practice only weakens their position. Sad, really.
When will we read a release that is categorical? Once again the article uses Could. So we have another regulation with a cost to the producer, and ultimately us, based on a guess.
Actually when I was growing up, we picked up eggs from a friend who had a poultry farm. We never refrigerated the eggs. I do so now, but I still eat them nearly raw. Not once in 70 years have I become ill from eating eggs. I only get 1 stomach virus, or whatever about every 10 years anyway. I do think people have become overly cautious, and thus their systems cannot handle ordinary germs or microbes.
I'm sure though that it quite possible to be allergic to eggs. I am allergic to citrus, but all it does is make me sneeze a lot. If it made my stomach sick, I would give it up.
Ah... Right2Life,love it,another idiot that thinks he knows more than the President of the United States. That's right, wasn't it you that taught constitional law?
Buy your eggs from a local farmer and you will be okay. When I was growing up, we got our eggs from my grandfather's farm. We never refrigerated eggs and often had dishes with raw eggs. I fully agree with Ciera Cox's comment
Why is the President blamed for everything? The story mentions the administration when referencing the FDA, not that is was a mandate from President Obama!
Are you seriously joking? What part about reduction in colony growth being retarded by the lowered temperature don't you get? Of course many eggs have salmonella, but if you can keep the colonies from multiplying there's that much less CFUs to kill off at your kill step later.
Beyond that, the waste products of the bacteria seriously damage the flavor of the egg.
Uh, really Crowny? Eggs were not meant to be eaten undercooked? Adam and Eve called God down and asked, "to what temperature should we be cooking these eggs?" And who precisely are you diagnosing with intolerance?
For the non-scientist comments, one of the reasons we live 4 times longer than they did in the Middle Ages is that we cook our eggs! Oh... and extensively use refrigeration.
I agree we live longer than they did in the middle ages, but one reason, we appear to be living longer (as compared to say the 1800's) is that the death age is averaged. Lots of people used to die in childbirth, at birth, or in childhood. Now most people get through that. So once you get to age 1, your life expectancy jumps to 70 or 80, wherever it is now. I do know that even my great-great grandparents lived into their late 80's...my parent's lived into their 90's. At 68, I expect to live until at least 90, which is why I am not going to bother to retired before 80. I hope not to live into my 100's as several of my aunts did.
All my life I have always enjoyed a good egg sunny side up and always add a raw egg to my milkshake and never once have gotten sick But there again I always thank the good lord for all that is provided for and available to us each and every day. What a Novel approach to life! Oh, by the way, I am 55 years old.

Probably the obama administrations most significant accomplishment which tells us everything we need to know about the idiot.

AHhhhhhh. It is probably just the old "Fox News Troll Squad" doing it's dirty work.
Evolution will just have to do ITS work ... eventually they will just all die out.

what a moronic administration---crowny is 100% correct.
Whoa. Don't credit me with blaming the administration because I'm not. More than anything, I was responding to the post before mine by Tonce.
Uh, really Crowny? Eggs were not meant to be eaten undercooked? Adam and Eve called God down and asked, "to what temperature should we be cooking these eggs?" And who precisely are you diagnosing with intolerance?
Trying to figure out what you are talking about?
