I have had it and I got the bird flu too. It is like many viruses and you don't know what it is except that you have a little fever and feel like crap for about a week. Doctors wont even test your blood for it and if you ask they will say there is no point. The only real worry is for the old, very young and already ill people. Some people seem to have a genetic difference that the virus exploits and you bleed from your pores and eyes. Immune compromised individuals could quite easily die from the fever which will be extreme if you have the hemorrhagic exploit.
For the billions of people who have already been infected and lived they will say, "Se la vie."
But the American public will scramble in great fear as the media beats this to death as was the case with "Swine Flu H1N1" and "Avian Flu".
Folks - average healthy folks - please quit freaking out over the small crap. None of those big bad bugs are worth much more than a few days discomfort.
If you are not freaked out by drug commercial ads that say side effects for your fibrobuttolitus medicine can cause you to bleed from your eyeballs, your teeth could turn black and your brain could melt (but you take it anyway) - you have bigger worries.

It is pronounced "den' gay", like Bengay. I got it in the 70's in the Virgin Islands. It is a very painful type flu that makes everything ache. It lasted 10 days, but I got over it. As Acapulco Kevin said, nothing to panic about, only the already ill, the very young and very old will need to take care. It is still a flu and will affect those who already have weak immune systems.

I live in Brazil, after 40 years in the U.S. and Canada. Most of the people I know here have caught dengue one time or another and the fight against the Aedes Aegypti, the scientific name for the mosquito, is endless. A lot of people die from the hemorrhagic form of dengue, but the disease will make you feel like dieing anyways, it is horrible. I hope you can eradicate this mosquito in the U.S. and find a vaccine for it.

I lived in Jamaica before migrating to the United States & visited there last week. I noticed they still practice mosquito eradication programs with constant spraying to eliminate or reduce the mosquito population during the wet season. I am amazed the concentration in the United States is to use vacines to fight the didease instead of simple low tech, low cost mosquito eradication programs which work. Some lessons can be learned from developing countries.

So we once had this disease eradicated and now it's back - doesn't the phrase "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" mean anything any more? Seems to me it would be a whole lot easier and less expensive - both in dollars and human suffering - to keep the 'frigging mosquitos away than wait until there is a huge problem. Where has our common sense gone?
The problem is that the mosquitoes that carry dengue fever are moving North due to global warming and they have built up immunity to many control measures. We really need to address those problems before we can halt the advance of these tropical diseases.

I am not surprised. Freedom of speech our forefathers died to give us unfortunately does not mean we are educated enough to do so in a public forum. Too many under-educated and uninformed in America (as evidenced by dumbing down of our colleges so substandard achievers can get in and get a degree). As evidenced here, some are unable to read a simple news story and make an educated contribution that is on topic without injecting hatred, politics (which has nothing to do with mosquito-borne illnesses, they have no political affiliations at all), and/or religious dogma into the conversation. Dengue fever is a disease that can in it's worst form be very painful and deadly. If measures of mosquito control are not taken, this can definitely take a bad turn in southern states due to the abundance of temperate marshlands and wetlands along the coastlines and tributaries. If you must bring politics into this, write your legislators to ask them to enact a plan for mosquito control instead of spouting Democrat this, Republican that...in an issue that is clearly non-partisan, leaving no room for political rhetoric.

I agree the discussion of dengue fever has little to do with that other disease and that society does seem to be in retro mode these days.
But, Dengue Fever and it's advance north is highly mundane to the subject. That is one scary disease. I've had bad flues before and even swine flu, but I sure don't want hemorrhagic fever. That would just plain suck. Wouldn't wish it on anyone else either.

Wayne, our "Deep Ecology" "Environmentalists" have Established their religion as the state religion, and banned most forms of protection of humans.
This is but one example of it. Over 4M people a year die because of the banning of DDT, because a few trust fund babies were worried (incorrectly it turns out) that it might kill a few birds.

DDT is a terrible poison that does linger in the environment for a long time as do it's byproducts. It was seriously adversely affecting Bald Eagles, Brown Pelicans and other species. It is highly toxic, mutanagenic, tetragenic, carcinogenic, persistent, causes diabetes and mimics female hormones. The stuff is seriously bad news.
I strongly suggest that you reread Silent Spring.
