this better be watched. My wife is from Malaysia and it is known over there and will make you very sick or can kill you quick. you think you have the flu but it is dengue fever.
I have had it and I got the bird flu too. It is like many viruses and you don't know what it is except that you have a little fever and feel like crap for about a week. Doctors wont even test your blood for it and if you ask they will say there is no point. The only real worry is for the old, very young and already ill people. Some people seem to have a genetic difference that the virus exploits and you bleed from your pores and eyes. Immune compromised individuals could quite easily die from the fever which will be extreme if you have the hemorrhagic exploit.
For the billions of people who have already been infected and lived they will say, "Se la vie."
But the American public will scramble in great fear as the media beats this to death as was the case with "Swine Flu H1N1" and "Avian Flu".
Folks - average healthy folks - please quit freaking out over the small crap. None of those big bad bugs are worth much more than a few days discomfort.
If you are not freaked out by drug commercial ads that say side effects for your fibrobuttolitus medicine can cause you to bleed from your eyeballs, your teeth could turn black and your brain could melt (but you take it anyway) - you have bigger worries.
It is pronounced "den' gay", like Bengay. I got it in the 70's in the Virgin Islands. It is a very painful type flu that makes everything ache. It lasted 10 days, but I got over it. As Acapulco Kevin said, nothing to panic about, only the already ill, the very young and very old will need to take care. It is still a flu and will affect those who already have weak immune systems.
That was the sickest I have ever been. Carried out of the bush by indigenous personnel that I never had the chance to thank. Can't even give blood anymore and that was 37 years ago.
I live in Brazil, after 40 years in the U.S. and Canada. Most of the people I know here have caught dengue one time or another and the fight against the Aedes Aegypti, the scientific name for the mosquito, is endless. A lot of people die from the hemorrhagic form of dengue, but the disease will make you feel like dieing anyways, it is horrible. I hope you can eradicate this mosquito in the U.S. and find a vaccine for it.
and when ddt was first used an estimated 2-3 million people around the world where saved from malaria, dengue, and encephalitis, but because it's a bit too effective(killed a lot of birds and frogs)new methods are being introduced to eradicate the mosquitoes
Fine, bite me, geez, are we not a little more worried about the gushing oil in the gulf and poison being sprayed to 'break up' the oil? Yeah, let's kill all bugs then we'll be safe - NOT.
The Democrats? Yeah. it was the Democrats who blew themselves up, destroyed a billion dollar rig, killed 11 workers, and destroyed the seafood industry, 38% of the US seafood industry, tourism and thousands of jobs. Now, this was an act of stupidity. First, drill where you can't control a problem, have no plan to cap or contain a spill. Bribe regulators, have a spill plan that protects walruses in the Gulf, signed off by a dead man. Come up with a plan 80 plus days later that you should have had done in case of a spill.
Yeah it is a Democrat who messes things up. And it was a Democrat who blew up his coal mine and 30 experienced workers..brilliant right wingers. Then, the sugar refinery in Savannah Ga blew up killing 14 workers.
Yeah, tell us about being a screw up there rightie...Wiley Coyote. watch out BOOM!!!
Actually it was the Republicans who began the Minerals Management Department.
It is the Republicans always pushing for offshore drilling.
President Obama hired a team to clean up Minerals Management Before the Gulf Crisis.
It is Republicans fighting every word and action of the Pres.Obama administration.
And we have all of the Tea Party Palin followers who are all just as stupid, ignorant and hateful as she is. Thank God for President Obama and Education Reform - we definitely need smarter people in society.
I lived in Jamaica before migrating to the United States & visited there last week. I noticed they still practice mosquito eradication programs with constant spraying to eliminate or reduce the mosquito population during the wet season. I am amazed the concentration in the United States is to use vacines to fight the didease instead of simple low tech, low cost mosquito eradication programs which work. Some lessons can be learned from developing countries.
Um....Bill...your juvenile remark is just downright embarrassing...regurgitated nonsense spit up like a child looking for attention. You're apparently making reference to AIDS in San Francisco. But are these "gay mosquitos" you're talking about down in Key West? Oh never mind...what's the point in arguing with inbred a-holes like you?
Dengue will never be completely eradicated just like the West Nile virus, but it can be controlled.
Somebody obviously on here is extremely defensive about ??? Sugarbeat, please crawl back under the humorless rock you slewfooted from and with your post please add some relevancy to this topic. Bill, stay hiliarious. Good one!
Not defensive at all. But it's well known that both San Fran and Key West have large gay populations. It's pretty clear to all but the most naive what "Bill" meant by his remark. And true to all homophobes, it's because deep down he is gay...and upset because he can't admit it to himself, much less others. Amanda, glad you find Bill's hatred so hilarious, and me humorless...it takes all kinds.
Gilman, before they reccommend a team of Austrian psychiatrists to study you, why not try doubling your Prozac dosage, or as a last resort switch to thorazine. You are one sick mnoma.
So we once had this disease eradicated and now it's back - doesn't the phrase "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" mean anything any more? Seems to me it would be a whole lot easier and less expensive - both in dollars and human suffering - to keep the 'frigging mosquitos away than wait until there is a huge problem. Where has our common sense gone?
The problem is that the mosquitoes that carry dengue fever are moving North due to global warming and they have built up immunity to many control measures. We really need to address those problems before we can halt the advance of these tropical diseases.
Lefty is absolutely correct. Insecticides used to control the particular type of mosquito that carries dengue has become ineffective. The mosquitoes have adapted.
I'm struggling to understand how a discussion about a deadly disease turned into a political debate???? And whoever brought AIDS into this discussion???? The two diseases have nothing to do with each other???? And you idiots who are so homophobic.... I'm pretty sure there is a special place in hell for you, someone who is so hateful that they can turn a discussion about a serious illness that kills many people into a forum to spew hatred and ignorance!!!! It amazes me the extent of how backward people think these days it's almost as if our society is in reverse?????
I am not surprised. Freedom of speech our forefathers died to give us unfortunately does not mean we are educated enough to do so in a public forum. Too many under-educated and uninformed in America (as evidenced by dumbing down of our colleges so substandard achievers can get in and get a degree). As evidenced here, some are unable to read a simple news story and make an educated contribution that is on topic without injecting hatred, politics (which has nothing to do with mosquito-borne illnesses, they have no political affiliations at all), and/or religious dogma into the conversation. Dengue fever is a disease that can in it's worst form be very painful and deadly. If measures of mosquito control are not taken, this can definitely take a bad turn in southern states due to the abundance of temperate marshlands and wetlands along the coastlines and tributaries. If you must bring politics into this, write your legislators to ask them to enact a plan for mosquito control instead of spouting Democrat this, Republican that...in an issue that is clearly non-partisan, leaving no room for political rhetoric.
Okay yeager, everyone is so hateful and you are just so loving that you call others idiots, and ignorant, and backwards, they belong in hell, etc., etc. Go look at your own hate filled face in the mirror.
That would be some person who goes by Bill. People who are closet cases hear "deadly disease" and immediately think AIDS.
I agree the discussion of dengue fever has little to do with that other disease and that society does seem to be in retro mode these days.
But, Dengue Fever and it's advance north is highly mundane to the subject. That is one scary disease. I've had bad flues before and even swine flu, but I sure don't want hemorrhagic fever. That would just plain suck. Wouldn't wish it on anyone else either.
And in this case I kind of agree with neversurrender. Name calling just isn't civil. Stooping to the level of hate mongering trolls turns you into one too. Look what happened to me. I used to use my real name in these discussion but after too much vitriol I turned into a troll also.
It's amazing. Any discussion on these forums, despite how far away from politics it can get is an excuse to regurgitate their tired rhetoric. I agree Yeager, it's absolutely disgusting....
Wayne, our "Deep Ecology" "Environmentalists" have Established their religion as the state religion, and banned most forms of protection of humans.
This is but one example of it. Over 4M people a year die because of the banning of DDT, because a few trust fund babies were worried (incorrectly it turns out) that it might kill a few birds.
DDT is a terrible poison that does linger in the environment for a long time as do it's byproducts. It was seriously adversely affecting Bald Eagles, Brown Pelicans and other species. It is highly toxic, mutanagenic, tetragenic, carcinogenic, persistent, causes diabetes and mimics female hormones. The stuff is seriously bad news.
Lefty is correct again on all counts. DDT is not something you want in the environment but if Mr.Z thinks it is good stuff I think it's a good idea for him to spray himself. It is still manufactured in Mexico.
this better be watched. My wife is from Malaysia and it is known over there and will make you very sick or can kill you quick. you think you have the flu but it is dengue fever.

Vote Democrat and save your ass.
the democrats would only screw it up.
You get dung fever from seeing Obama on TV too often. (with the amount of b.s. he spews...)
vote libertarian get rid of the fools in both parties

Probably Valley Fever.....

Thanks very much for taking time off from your important work at NASA to give us that well thought out opinion, you rocket scientist.

Deadly disease in Key West, and Deadly disease in San Fran ---- wonder what those two places have in common?
Probably people. The more people you get, the more deadly diseases.
and as far as dems and republicans - they pretend to be on opposite sides while actually working for the banks and oil money at the same time...
as far as the oil goes - look at all the people that sold tons of BP stock prior to it leaking...
You've got it wrong. They work for themselves, to make as much money as they can and to get re-elected...

Come on you right wing cheese d**ks. Can't you come up with any better stupid remarks than that!?
No, we'll leave making stupid remarks up to you. You're doing a great job with it.
They are genetically modified to target only the GOP morons and tea party members...

This has to be George Bush's fault.
