I stopped taking Avandia four years ago prior to the 2007 study coming out. I achieved this by going on a strict diet and losing fifty pounds of body weight. I also reduce the amount of metaformin taken daily by seventy five percent.
I can tell you that fighting the weight gain has been a battle but I know that if I do not do this I will be at the mercy of the drug companies.
Something that helped me was the purchase of a magazine sold by a doctor through "Parade" magazine in the Sunday paper. This book explains the process of "reversing" diabetes and the foods that you should and should not eat.
Sometimes we do have to take matters into our own hands and get educated and motivated. I was on antidepressants and hormone balancing drugs for years. Tired of it, I got an Associate Degree in Holistic Healthcare specializing in Clinical Herbalism, and was able to get myself off of both and now I am symptom-free and don't even have to take the herbs anymore either. The body can and will re-balance itself with the proper care and lifestyle changes.
One wonders when obviously deadly and addictive drugs like Klonopin will ever get this kind of attention. Meanwhile they are being handed out like candy even though they are worse than heroin! At least you can stop taking Avandia if you experience problems.
The FDA and most medical schools are in bed with the pharmaceutical companies. My primary care doc was a good student and believes in chemical drugs with all her heart. For the past 20 years she has offered me all kinds of drugs. I refused them all and now I'm a very healthy 65 year old taking only thyroid meds and high quality vitamins and minerals.
These days you just have to take the FDA with a grain of salt and be responsible for your own health.
If this doesn't show you that the FDA and the pharmaceutical companies are in bed together - What's it gonna take?
