Kids will probably eat some of the healthy stuff if nothing else is around but it will be hard to stop them from eating stuff like potato chips, pop, candy, cookies because people like that stuff, and unless we make it illegal to sell or buy it, most people's taste buds will keep finding junk food neat to eat.
I love how they always blame school lunches!! I work with school lunches and know whats in them. Most are healthier than what you think. There are laws to ensure that the food that is served is nutritious and healthy. (We offer a full salad bar daily). The biggest problem I see everyday is the little ones (k-5 grade) who come to school with their snack cakes and cola, and skip the school lunch altogether. Until we can educate the parents at home, we will continue to fight a losing battle. School districts will continue to get a bad rap, for poor education at home.
I am a teacher. A few years ago, I brought one of my classes a treat for donating the most money to a charity. I bought "fun-size" candy bars and fresh whole apples. The apples were gone before half the candy was. It was eye opening to say the least. Since then, the "treats" I buy my students are always fresh fruit, and I rarely hear complaints.
Take out the snack & soda machines. I graduated in 1986 & we never had vending machines at schools. I was surprised when my daughter's middle school had them.
The whole school needs to be on board or having a health and wellness policy about snacks and soda will not do any good. What good is it to have a policy and rules, but an administration that will not enforce them? Some of the people who try to do it right are seen as the "bad guys" for not allowing everyone to just do whatever they want. As far as a priority, this is seen as pretty far down the list. Sad, but true.

It's a re-education issue. People laughed when anti-smoking campaigns started too...
