They left out the primary and most important commandment - be careful who you choose to be your ancestors, because skin aging is pretty much determined by your genes. Number two - don't smoke. After that you start with the sunscreen and moisturizing commandments, not before.
So true, TJ. I have been told my skin is incredible for 63 & yes, it easily takes 10 yrs. off my age. I was just told that by a massage therapist I met recently. ( Not professionally). I hate to confess it, but I really do nothing for my skin & never have. I still have some oiliness on my forehead, but only since menopause has my skin started to dry up. Both my husband & I had/have this & neither of our kids do-go figure?
I DO get enough sleep, take vitamins & have used "Clinique" products since I was 16 ( & Estee Lauder). Both are water based & NOT tested on animals. And I try to stay out of the sun AMAP. I was a lifeguard when younger & believe it or not, used a tanning machine for home use. ( Got it for Xmas my Sr. Yr. in H.S.). I quit in my 20's & it's a good thing as I've had 2 skin cancers-so far!
(Retired nurse here) The people with the worst skin I've seen are those who smoke, stay in the sun & don't get enough sleep. Just my observation. Oh! And I used to clean my skin with pure alcohol.
I do believe genetics plays a big role . Yes smoking is a big culprit. And tanning. My SIL is a poster child for that. She's been tanning and sunning for about 30 yrs now. Never without a Tan. It might make your arms and legs look healthy but it has aged her face horribly. She really looks old.
Genes are important - yes - but that's not controllable. Best to think about what you can control and it's a reasonably short list of what's critically important, in my personal order of priority: Don't smoke (for health as well as looks), wear sunscreen religiously (start EARLY), eat the right foods, keep hydrated, take reasonable care of your skin. Personal comment: you're going to look great but will still look your age - don't worry about that. Smile a lot, so you'll have the right kind of lines on your face!
My little secret for soft skin is not to drink with your meals - a half hour before and nothing for a few hours afterward. This sends more oils from your food to your skin and joints, because dumping water on top of oil in your stomach makes the oils glob up and more gets sent to your liver instead. This is a great formula for preventing arthritis as well.
As far as the recommendations in the story, avoiding the sun leads to vitamin d deficiency (over half the population is now deficient!). And putting chemicals on your skin as they recommend contributes to cancer. You wouldn't eat these products, so don't put them on your skin either!
If you want beautiful skin, focus more on nutrition, specifically fish oils and antioxidants. Did you know that antioxidants can control gene behavior - to your benefit? Gene behavior is not set in stone!

Stanmrak, could you please privide a source for this information?? Actually, it's the most ridiculous statement I have ever read!
I have heard it is better drink water before and after meals rather than with, due to it interfering with the digestive process... but this is the first time I have heard someone say it is because of oils in the stomach! Very strange.
stamrak: I have a Master's Degree in Nursing with a fair amt. of nutrition courses thrown in. Where in heaven's name did you get this idea of not drinking water with meals? Oils "gobbing" up to the top of the stomach? The stomach lining makes pepsin & HCL; how does that affect absorbation of oils?
Give me a double-blind, peer-reviewed study to back up this "belief." Not some vague, voodoo from someone wanting to sell you over-priced chemicals that, in the best case secenario, won't hurt you, but then again, won't help.
V Bevis, there a quite a lot of people who really do believe that drinking with your meals is not a good thing. My husband was even told by a co-worker of all the health problems that are actually caused by drinking with meals. I personally laughed it off. I think its more about what you drink, not when. However, with the right lingo thrown into the logic behind that theory, people really are believing it!! Sad but true. First thing I do each morning is drink a glass of room temp water before anything else touches my lips. I just fill the glass at night and park it next to my coffee pot. :)
Many years ago, (too many to mention), my dad started his day by drinking a glass of warm water. I never asked why. His whole family had a history of kidney stones so maybe he thought the warm water was some kind of preventative.
Jan & mamamyself: Yes, I know people who do that, (drinking warm water ) but I'm looking for the "rational" behind doing it. As to drinking it, I too carry around water esp. in the summer & esp. since I take meds. that can make my mouth feel like an alky on a wk.-long bender. And yes, it certainly can't hurt Jan, to try to prevent kidney stones. Most of us, myself including myself don't really drink enough water, but I'm trying........!
Water is so good for us; probably the best beverage we can consume. It helps keep the skin hydrated & younger looking, it helps keep the kidneys functioning, it's good to help prevent kidney stones, it helps keep the bowels moving, it helps keep the blood volume up where it should be, etc. But how a certain timing of consuming it affects oils being sent to the liver is something that boggles the mind both mentally & medically!
I have avoided drinking with meals for 33 years now; I don't need peer-reviewed studies - my baby-soft, wrinkle-free skin is all the evidence I need. I first learned this tip from Dr. Dale Alexander, one of the world's most knowledgeable nutritional gurus.
As far as those nutrition courses they teach as part of a doctor's or nurse's education... they're full of corporate propaganda. The curriculum is subject to the influence of the corporate food industry (that's where these schools get a lot of their funding). I can't tell you how much nonsense I've heard from "certified" nutritionists over the years. They really believe everything they've been taught is scientific fact!
Some of the biggest myths being perpetrated include:
high cholesterol causes heart disease,
water fluoridation prevent cavities,
and sun should be avoided at all costs.
I could go on and on...
Overpriced chemicals? How about statin drugs that cost hundreds of dollars a month and don't do anything but ruin your health even more! What does it cost to manufacture one bottle of these drugs? LESS THAN A DOLLAR!
I'm sorry you are one of the know-nothings that populate our world who would rather believe the paranoid fantasies from uneducated gurus than scientific studies. Even science does not say what you claim it says. Science does not say to avoid the sun at all costs. UV rays are part of the sun's benefits to our health, but too much of them causes problems. Many people do not get enough of the beneficial rays, so there is a Vitamin D shortage. However, you must protect yourself from too much UV.
As far as the so-called Doctor Dale Alexander, he was proved a liar and a charlatan in hearings before the FTC in 1956. His PhD from England was proved non-existent. He had also purchased a doctorate (in oratory) for $1000 from a fake mail-based college. He did not even complete one semester of the college he had actually attended and was 313th of 353 in his high school. His theories on water and nutrition have been debunked over and over.
stamrak: and your credentials come from WHERE? No, I'm NOT a nutritionist, but a B.S. from Ohio State in Nursing & an M.S. in it from Uni./Pennsylvania. I PAID FOR MY SCHOOLING, THANK YOU VERY MUCH W/O ANY "HELP" FROM THE CORPORATE WORLD! The ONLY corporate "influence" we had was the Campbell's single packs of soup on the 3rd. floor canteen.
Dr. Alexander's (legitimate) credentials are? Published research projects in what prominent areas? Publications in prestigious medical journals? I thought not!
Don't compare apples with oranges: statins are NOT drinking water. Costs are NOT what you believe. Patents have run out on some of the oldest ones & costs are NOT prohibitive. I know as my husband takes one. Manufacturing costs do NOT equate to R & D costs that have to be amortized for a drug to make a profit for a company.
I'm only writing this for the benefit of others to see what a tue charlatan looks/sounds like. Personally, when I read the part about "fluoridation of water," besides chuckling at that comment in the movie "Dr. Strangelove," I knew I didn't want to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.
SNAKE OIL IS ALIVE & OPERATING AGAIN IN THE 21ST. CENTURY!
I've come to see that all of these "lists" that news organizations like to pepper their sites with are filled with either stuff you either already know — you learned in Kindergarten, or is just common sense — or filled with dubious claims.
Take them with a grain of salt (scrub). How many articles do we really need to tell us, ad nauseam, to use sunscreen?
And what I do find suspect is the recommendation of specific, very pricey moisturizers. Is the writer on the payroll? Studies have shown over and over that the inexpensive moisturizers are every bit as good as the expensive ones. So why promote particular brands in the article? Suspicious.
Stay out of the sun. Drink a lot of water. Use a decent moisturizer. And hope your genes are good. And duh, don't smoke. They need to put up a list, with that, in 2010?
Why is it these articles always assume their readers are caucasian? African-Americans often don't need sunscreen and neither do people of certain other races. Even with Obama in office, the bias is still all-too-clear.
African-Americans DO need sunscreen if they are going to be exposed to the sun for a significant amount of time. It's a myth that they don't need sunscreen. They may not burn as easily but they do burn and still sustain damage to their skin.
Actually, imbecile, sunscreen is recommended for everyone, regardless of race or skin color.
"Although people with dark skin may not sunburn as easily as those with fair skin, they are still at risk of skin damage from excessive sun exposure. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends routine use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or greater for all people — regardless of skin color."
amazing how after thousands of years of evolution human beings can no longer take exposure to the sun. I don't know why anyone believes "authorities" anymore it's such a joke. the problem people have is that they are not in the sun enough anymore to properly condition themselves to it.
Thanks for all who said all need to wear sunscreen. I remember reading after "Roots" came out that 85% of African-Americans have some degree of white in them. Darker peoples are more likey to get Squamous Cell cancer & lighter ones, Basil Cell Carcinoma. I've had 2 Basil Cells removed-so far. My father ( blond/blue eyed) had a Melanoma-the truly dangerous kind & my bridesmaid (also blonde/blue eyed) at my wedding died at age 50 from metastatic Melanoma-in her inguinal area ( between her L. leg & her vagina.) Basically these are the 3 kinds & for the life of me, I can't tell them apart with any accuracy; only a Dermatologist can.
This Dale Alexander guy (who came out with the "don't drink while you eat" baloney) was found (by the FTC) in 1956(!) to not actually be the medical doctor he claimed to be. He was a fraud, and his ideas (and book) had no scientific validity.
Its amazing that anybody can write something that sounds true (but isn't) and people will believe it, even 54 years after it was found out to be a fraud. Its crazy what people will believe... I wouldn't have thought that this was an urban legend but apparently it is!... we should tell mythbusters about this one.
Liars and charlatans? Try the FTC and the FDA for starters. Throw in the CDC and the ACS, too. All these organizations are primarily interested in protecting the profits of their corporate sponsors, not the health of the public.
Why else would the FDA be trying to eliminate raw almonds, raw milk and nutritional supplements (all good for you), while allowing things like hormones, antibiotics, high-fructose corn syrup, MSG, aspartame and genetically-modified ingredients into our food, and fluoride (the second-most toxic element in nature) into the water supply? Because these things increase profits.
Don't believe anything these organizations tell you if you value your health.
exactly they allow coal tar (artificial color) to be fed to kids in their candy but they want to regulate vitamin c. the government cannot be trusted to do what's right with our food supply they have proven that over and over
you don't trust anyone all the way or you are a fool bevis. always be skeptical. with your attitude you have probably been screwed over in more supermarket transactions than you would imagine. "it's on sale the sign said so"... sure
Looooong ago, as in before sunscreen was even in the language, my granny taught the grand kids, who came to visit for the summer, several important lessons regarding our skin...and overall good health: 1. Always keep hydrated. We had water jugs with each of our names on them on the lower shelf of the fridge...they were quart sized.... We were expected to drink frequently, not to wait until we were terribly thirsty...and we were to refill them each time they got empty. Lots of good 'fuel' for playing in the Texas summers. 2. Each morning before we went out to play we stood on the porch and took ten cleansing breaths of the cool morning air. We were encouraged to do that at any time during the day when we felt fatigued. 3. We each had hats to wear while playing. Each of us could decorate our hat any way we wanted, but you did wear your hat. 4. Long sleeves were encouraged...except when later in the afternoon we were playing in the sprinkler. 5. Lunch always included some kind of fruit. 6. Aside from frequent trips to the fridge for cold water, the shade of our huge Mulberry tree was a location of choice when it got really hot...the swings were there, and there is nothing like the breeze created by that tree from seemingly non-moving air...and swinging as high as you could. 7. No matter how much 'sprinkler time' you had, or how late you had it, the end of the day you had a bath...two really...one to get the 'dirt of the day' off...then after cleaning the tub, you got back in for a nice cool soak. 8. Out of the tub and dried off a light coat of lotion (don't really remember which one) and a bit of Vaseline under each eye. 9. A good supper followed by homemade ice cream with fruit in it, watermelon, or fresh peaches from the tree out back.
The result of all that, genetics notwithstanding, is that each of us, 'boys' and 'girls', have really good skin that denies our ages....and all of our kids were brought up the same way.
As mentioned above...there were no sunscreens or fancy creams, etc....just some good old fashioned care that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Well, there is one more benefit that is priceless: Wonderful, precious memories.
"Being discredited by the FTC or the FDA" is another way of saying:
"The pharmaceutical industry (or any other big corporation) doesn't like to be exposed as charlatans, and they don't like competition either, so they will smear you if you try, because they have no valid argument for what they do."
It's in their financial interest to get you sick and keep you sick - and then keep you alive at all costs. A healthy population is bad for business.
wow. Y'all are some cold know it all so and so's. I too go with the inexpensive common sense approach. And I think genes are bigger than most effort too. My mother was a health nut. She did everything right. Not a grain of white sugar passed her lips from 1970 until 2003. Totally organic diet, mostly raw foods on and on. She died of pancreatic cancer. My dad, on the other hand lived through the depression during his formative years eating a diet not just mainly but ONLY of dried lima beans white rice and fatback. Occasionally greens. His favorite food has always been bologna or other processed meats with mayo on soft white bread and ice cream for dessert. He's never really been sick and will be 88 next week. Go figure.
Susannah: (I'm adopted, so this doesn't apply to me)
My father chewed tobacco, smoked cigars, worked in a steel mill & died at 82 of cancer which ran through his family like a freight train headed south. He didn't drink, ate well & got enough sleep & exercise.
My mother grew up on a farm. She ate fatty bacon, sausage, whole milk, ice cream, syrup on pancakes, whole butter, fatty lunch meats, cheeses, etc. She was not overwt., she gardened, but otherwise, I never saw her do a sit-up, ride a bike or do more than go for a walk. She is now in a nursing home, & will be 105 the 25th of this month.
VBEvis, if you have so much faith in water fluoridation, try to find just one that shows that water fluridation prevent cavities. You can’t - because there are none. But if you compare cavity rates in communities that fluoridate, the rate is about the same as communities that don't fluoridate. And fluoride is the second most toxic substance on earth, next to mercury.
I suggest you watch this interview with the author of the book, “The Fluoride Deception “ by investigative journalist Christopher Bryson on YouTube:
Water fluoridation has been called one of the most signifucant health advances of the 20th century by the CDC. The truth is that it is the biggest hoax of the century.
stanmrak: You picked the WRONG person to argue with on fluoride. I have a mouth "packed" with fillings, caps, implants, root canals UNDER a cap & a small fortune tied to them over a lifetime, as my teeth are very "soft." I grew up here in the U.S. & when I found my birthmother, (from Australia), we compared notes as to our HUGE dental bills over the yrs. NEITHER OF US GREW UP WITH FLUORIDATED WATER NOR FLUORIDE PILLS!
When I became pregnant for my 1st. son, I took fluoride pills while pregnant as our local water supply where we lived at the time ( it is NOW fluoridated) did not have fluoride. I continued putting it into his formula & when we moved to where he grew up & the water WAS fluoridated, I stopped any additional amts.
His brother was born where we had flouridated water, so he never had any other than the water he drank from the tap.
MY "CHILDREN," NOW 36 & 41 HAVE PERFECT TEETH-NO CAVITIES EVER!
Please explain to me the process that allowed 2 people to have such incredibly good teeth while their mother & grandmother had such terrible ones?
And just to make you happy in your delusions, there is some concern about fluoridated water being the cause of making older citizen's bones more brittle. So I KNOW about fluoride.
It lists 358 studies that have shown that fluoridation is safe and fluoridation is very effective. The Center for Disease Control lists fluoridation if drinking water one of the top ten activities to increase the health in the 20th century. The fact sheet shows how you can tell charlatans from true science, how you can look at credentials of people studying the issue and and how to tell fake science from facts. There are even some studies that show that too much fluoride is not a good thing and how much is too much. I grew up in an area that was naturally heavily fluroidated. While I am in my 70's and have great teeth, we had to be careful not to drink more than 2 quarts a day of our well water because of the high fluoride content. High amounts of natural fluoride can cause liver damage and some other issues, that are not seen in areas where the fluoride is carefully controlled. If you read the studies carefully, V. Bevis, you will see that the brittle bone issue is also related to natural fluoridation, not the low dosage added to water supplies.
Mr. Bryson spent 10 years independently investigating the truth about fluoride. He didn't do this to make money. Beware of government agencies that are beholden to big corporations, in this case, Alcoa Aluminum. They will lie to you for the benefit of powerful lobbies. Fluoridated water is a hoax.
Beware of journalists who do not use good science. Of course fluoride is toxic in high quantities. So is salt or iodine or other substances. Why, do you know that salt has chlorine in it, and chlorine is a poisonous substance that can kill you instantly. See, I can write just like Bryson. Look at the science not at the charlatans who find drama in order to create a career for themselves. It is important for parents to tell their kids not to swallow a whole tube of fluoridated toothpaste, just like it is important to tell them not to swallow a whole box of salt.
Obviously you have not read any scientific study of the effects of adding fluorides to water or you would not make such ignorant statements (ignorant means lack of knowledge, nothing more). Benefits abound.
Sunscreen, sleep, and no smoking are big ones. But I think a lot is pure luck. My sister has religiously cared for her skin and has struggled with break-outs. I rarely remove my make-up at night and have blemish-free skin most of the time. Unfair? Yes. But true.
I think it depends. The same skin routine will not work for everyone... maybe your sister should adjust and/or seek the help of a dermatologist?
One thing I've personally noticed... the more I "religiously care for" my skin, the worse it gets. The moment I lay off the products, my skin becomes clear.
2 things: At 59, having lifeguarded for 9 years, I am a walking advertisement for sunscreen...I've used it carefully for decades and still nee a dermatologist. Go see a dermatologist; there are better products to use than those listed here...and you'll save lots of money at the drugstore. The second thing is that just last week I read that benzoyl peroxide has an ingredient that hass been banned in Europe for being a carcinogen. I just threw mine out. Just goes to show thaty we MUST read and learn all we can...this article is helpful but in some ways very misleading.
I love these tips because so much of our anti-aging issues can be helped with healthier choices each day. I wanted to add though that I refuse to use some of the "mentioned" products since I only want to use healthy organic ingredients. I even use pure olive oil as my moisturizer in the winter and honey masks from local farmer's on my face along with my daily Vidazorb OPC age defense probiotic! I love eating whole foods too and I am just really hoping that with these choices my skin and my body will be happy and healthy!
It might be to a degree abouy your ancestors and genes but there is a few good program that you can choose http://clicks2offers.go2jump.org/SH3l8 to use to help out with keeping your skin looking young and good looking.
I have used Oil of Oley all my adult life and I have been told I look younger than I m - 65. That is the only product I buy.

African Americans need sunscreen just as much as Caucasians do.
http://www.sacbee.com/2010/07/18/2897727/blacks-urged-to-use-sun-protection.html
From the Mayo Clinic web site.
amazing how after thousands of years of evolution human beings can no longer take exposure to the sun.
SUNSCREEN! SUNSCREEN! SUNSCREEN!
What do you people avoid drinking with dinner that keeps you young looking - a gallon of whiskey?
Paranoid much?
exactly they allow coal tar (artificial color) to be fed to kids in their candy but they want to regulate vitamin c. the government cannot be trusted to do what's right with our food supply they have proven that over and over
So, besides this Dr. Alexander, who DO you trust? Apparently everyone is crazy except you?
you don't trust anyone all the way or you are a fool bevis. always be skeptical. with your attitude you have probably been screwed over in more supermarket transactions than you would imagine.
"Give the body it's daily moisturizer"
ITS, not IT'S. Get thee to an editor.
And yes, these may be "commandments," but no smoking and no tanning are glaring omissions of the skin "golden rule."
Now tell me all about genes.
I suggest you watch this interview with the author of the book, “The Fluoride Deception “ by investigative journalist Christopher Bryson on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3y8uwtxrHo
So I KNOW about fluoride.
stanmrak, I suggest you read http://www.otaywater.gov/owd/pages/resources/fluoridation/fluoridation_facts.pdf
AGAIN, I suggest you read the book, “The Fluoride Deception “ by investigative journalist Christopher Bryson, interviewed on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3y8uwtxrHo
Obviously you have not read the book. Fluoride is toxic at any level; you get NO benefit from drinking it. Comparing it to salt is moronic.
