This is amazing. Oscar, I salute you and your medical miracle makers. Just to think of the many war and horrific injury patients that may now have a chance to regain some of their old mortality is an overwhelming victory for this major milestone. May God bless and keep you, Oscar. Our prayers are with you.
Not great but much better than I thought it would be. I predict as more experience is gained with this procedure future results will be virtually undetectable.
This is true, although keep in mind it has only been a few months since the surgery. In the article, they claim Oscar will take up to 18 months to regain 90% of his facial functions. Quite an amazing technological feat.
I am profoundly moved by Oscar, his life, the face given by the family and all the health care professionals..the team that has played such a major part.
I feel for the guy but he is not coming to my house for dinner. It is good to hear he can eat and drink though. Regarding drinking, I'd be pounding margaritas and stop every two or three years just to see if things got better.
On a more personal note, he does not look a day over 26.
So, although Oscar may in fact be an outstanding person in terms of personality, you'd forbid him from your home simply because he endured a tragic accident and no longer looks entirely normal - talk about superficial.
I'd rather have that face than none at all. I wouldn't care if no one would want me in their house. Hopefully they can do that for the woman that was attacked by a chimp.
That's because he doesn't have full motor control over his facial muscles yet you bone head. He can't close his eyes completely or close his mouth completely yet. It's a work in progress that will take countless painful hours of therapy by Osacar and tireless hours of therapists to improve. And even then he won't look like your typical hollywood fabricated ideal anyway.
But I guarantee Oscar has a better life already than anyone that would post such a stupid comment. Count yourself lucky or do us a favor and count yourself out...
I went on a date with a guy once and when I asked him what his best asset was, he said, "My body. I have a great body." I told him, "Your looks can be taken from you. Don't you have something else about yourself that you're proud of?" He replied, "without looks, you're really nothing" That was the end of that....It's sad to think that there are people out there like that, but there are and we can only hope that nothing severe, like this, happens to them because they don't have the strength to survive.
That's a great story gyrl. It's good to see that people like that are given the opportunity to "lose" just like everyone else. I'm an average looking guy and have had my share of dates with people in my league and even out of my league. And honestly, the most physically gorgeous person can turn very "ugly" very quickly. And I always found that it's the those people who fall from the ideal the most often and the hardest. Like you said, when physical beauty is taken from you (and it will - whether by accident or age), who will want to stick around to take care of you or be around you? There needs to be something more.
Why would you think he has such a great life? I mean the guy tried to blow himself away with a shotgun to the face. Don't sound like a great life to me.
What a remarkable surgery and hopefully continued success with Oscar's recovery. My thoughts and prayers will be sent to the donor family for their bravery and generous gift to make this happen. This kind of organ donation goes above and beyond a cornea or kidney, etc. and the decision must have taken tremendous strength and love from the donor family. God bless all involved with this!
@ Matt: May the force be with you and your **^** potty mouth.
It's miraculous to say the least! What a gift from the donor family. Have a good, long, happy life Oscar. We may not all believe in God, but someone gifted the people who perform these surgeries with a remarkable ability to make such things possible. There is SOMETHING greater than all of us.
Matt. I don't belive you made your basis for your argument. On what authority do you decide the exsistance or non-exsistance of God? If people ask for Gods blessings on a man, what is it to you? God very well might have had a real and significant impact on the mans life, and you would never know. Just because you don't think you need him, does not invalidate another persons relization that they need His love and support.
If you wish to elevate your disscusion beyond "I'm right because I said so", perhaps you should provide empirical evidence of God's non-exsistance. I will warn you though, that many have tried to empiricaly prove His exsistance one way or the other, and failed.
To be on topic, I think it is an awesome illistration of medical science.
PS-Not being able to copy/paste in easymode is pretty elsucko.
Of course you can't prove a negative. Moron. No atheist worth his salt claims to prove the non-existence of "god". Think Bernard Russell's teapot analogy. Absolutes are the prerogative of the incredulous religious ilk.
You're question is deceptive and irrelevant.
Atheism is simply the non belief in Theism. Theism is the belief in "creator" which is separate from creation, who controls universal events , and with whom a person has a personal relationship. I, and many others, have encountered no empirical evidence for such and have also never come across a substantial a priori argument for theism that hasn't been totally eviserated. The obvious, and superficial, counter to this is that people often ascribe attributes to this "thing" that puts it outside of our material existence and therefore can't be "proven" to exist. How anybody came to have that knowledge except through empirical means is beyond me. But such non-sequiturs abound with religious "reasoning".
Claiming you need "his love and support" is pointless unsubstantiated blathering. 95% of people in the Congo also believe in, and claim to have seen, witches that can fly, live in trees, and have an extra organ. But I guess their beliefs are "primitive" and yours are fact.
This has turned into a religous Face-off. Who cares? Believe or don't, this guy is just trying to put his best face forward. When he came face-face with the barrel of his gun he has found it in himself, through whatever power he may credit, to continue to face each day with optimism.
Amen pwilb! That's all that matters here. God, no god or just pure strong will by Oscar and the learned skills of his surgeons, awesome job. Good luck Oscar!!
(Though I totally agree with ivanho75. Very well put sir.)
So true! Does anyone know if she was made to do community service? and I don't mean just picking up trash in the park. I don't know what good she's doing in jail anyway. She's leading a privilaged incarceration and just living off of tax payer's money or the next 90 days or sooner (probably sooner).
She should have been made to do work in hospitals or trauma centers where real people suffer from terrible accidents from DWIs or similar tragedies as caused by others' indescretions. Maybe she'd meet someone like Oscar - living through terrible physical and social pain but yet who have the heart and courage to fight and survive. Someone like her can really learn her place and worth in life by spending hard time with people like Oscar.
Wow! What an amazing man he is, and his team of doctors, cudos to them. I cant imagine going through what he has and he looks amazing. May God bless him and his family and a speedy recovery to him. May he have a wonderful life.........
This is news worth reading.............Lohan and the like cannot compare with stories likes this. Great coverage, great story................God Bless all involved.
WOW!! remarkable work!! I commend Oscar for having the courage to withstand such an procedure and the doctors for doing such a wonderful job!! I look forward to an update in years to come when he regains better use of the facial muscles. Gives all of us out there who have 2 left feet and only bad luck lots of HOPE!! Kudos!!
Can anyone answer this question for me? When someone receives a face transplant, do they look exactly like the deceased donor or do some features change because of the recipient's skeleton? Also, if the donor had a different hair color than the recipient, would the facial hair grow the recipient's color or donor's color? I am amazed at all of the scientific innovations and would like to learn more about this.
It takes a long time for the nerves to regenerate and all the edema to go down. As the nerves do begin to regenerate, movement will return ever so slowly to the muscles with lots of time. Oscar has been through a most radical surgery of which there is no definitive time for how long the healing and regenerative process will take other than it will be quite some time. He has come a long, hard way. Good luck Oscar! You are a brave, and one tough fellow. I am in awe of your strenght.
Danna-2067866, good question. The appearance of our factial features are largely formed by the underlying bone structure. The appearance of your checks, your forhead, your orbits etc are all dictated by your bones and how the fascia, muscle etc adhere to it. That is why forensic scientist can often discover how a victim looked when they find a skull. There are certain professionals who can recreate an approximation of how that person most likely looked. Coloration of course varies etc and how chubby or skinny some one is will also influence the outcome. Oscar has a lot of edema still, hence the swelling. He also has very little muscle control so his face has a very 'slack' appearance which should improve as he continues to develop sensation and muscle control. Overall, I think the surgery was an amazing success. Lets hope his future rejection episodes can be easily controlled. At this point that is his biggest obstacle.
Good post, Hedwig. Intelligent, correct, on topic, and kind. More of what we should see here.
Best wishes to Oscar and his family. It takes a huge amount of courage to undertake what he has done, and my heart goes out to him. I hope he continues to improve. What an amazing young man.
You know, I've never really believed that God mixes so closely in people's lives as some people do, I could just never figure out why, if He does, he'd save one person and not another or why He'd allow some people to lead privileged lives and allow some children to suffer hunger and violence. It never made sense to me.
And then I lost my son in a terrible accident two years ago, and it's all I can do to keep my mouth shut when someone says things about how God worked some miracle in their life. I just want to scream. "Oh, yeah, well what the Hell does that mean for my son? Did I not pray hard enough, were we not good enough people for Him to have saved my son? Even if He wanted to punish me, how could he cut short the life of my beautiful son?"
But I don't - because I really have no desire to let my anger and sadness crush other people's comfort. I do believe in God, but still don't believe God works directly in people's lives, but if it helps other people get by - then so be it. Let it. Why be so hateful, Matt?
As for LC - 102866 - I just don't know what to say to you. This poor man has suffered so much and he and his family have hope now and you say he looks terrible? Nice.
I'll bet his family thinks this improvement is beautiful, and I hope the donor family thinks so, as well. Oscar, you are beautiful, and many good wishes for continued improvement and courage.
So sorry for your loss, I wish there was something someone could say to make your loss less painful.
From my limited understanding of God, I would say that living on this earth is not our reward, for we have to deal with the anguish of pain, death, and dying we suffer through everyday.
Adam's sin separated us from God, we can no longer live in His presence. But once we die, Jesus rushes to our rescue, and claims our sins against God as his own, and God is more than happy to transfer Jesus payment for sin, and transfers Jesus sinless life to our account so that we can live in God's presence and enjoy the gift of heaven, where there is no more pain, death or dying. God remains God, His justice and mercy remains true.
When God takes us, we see our loved one, me my father, and you your son.
I believe God does live that close to us, the compassion you have shown for Oscar is a measure of God's grace, the grace He has given you and you have accepted. I'm sure Matt was offered the same level of grace but he has chosen not to accept it and chooses to live outside of God mercy and grace.
One final thought, remember God is in control of everything, he could decide to kill us all in an instant, we all have failed, we were intended to reflect God's image, of love, grace, kindness, but he withholds that judgment because some of us, accept His grace, and reflect His image, like you have here. And for you, your son, my father and any others that accept His gift He offers an eternity in the presence of Him and the company of those that reflect His image.
I'll meet you and your son there, may God richly bless you!
Thank you, Don. I have never doubted God's ability to directly touch our lives, I just can't believe that He picks and chooses the way people so often think that He does for how could He let small children suffer abuse if He did? And it's impossible for me to see any mercy in my son's death
You see, it's so very hard for me to accept that my son, my only child, is gone forever and I am so very angry about it. If I thought God purposely chose to take my son, and in such a violent way, and then left me here to suffer this Hell on Earth without my son I don't know how I'd ever live with that.
But my vision is skewed right now, I know. I read something someone wrote the other day about surviving the death of her child because her faith sustains her. Maybe I will find my way back. Right now I have a very standoffish relationship with God, maybe in time that will change.
But I do appreciate your thoughts and your words of comfort....And I assume from what you have said you have lost your father, and I offer you my condolences. My father is my best friend and he was my son's hero. Good fathers are such a blessing.
And if God is working directly in lives today, I hope He gives Oscar and his family some strength. Take care!
Matt - You will never win anyone over to your beliefs by making disparaging remarks about their beliefs and by trying to prove their point of view to be completely wrong. Christians, atheists, and all other belief systems could take this advice to heart. You will never persuade anyone by beating them over the head with a bigger club.
The old "what I have faith in is better than what you have faith in even though noone can ever know who's right because it is a matter of faith' argument.....
God Bless Oscar, his doctors and the family of his donor. It is wonderful that we have the technology to perform this surgery.
God Bless you Oscar, you are a very brave man. Good job!
This is amazing. Oscar, I salute you and your medical miracle makers. Congratulations to Oscar. He looks good.
All due respect, he does not look good.

Obviously Oscar has more class than you'll ever have. Wake up a-hole and join the human race and stop acting like a pathetic juvenile !!!
Tough love.....
Thanks for judging....

I'm okay with Oscar coming over but I want some face time with MSNBC as well. I have a few demands of my own.
I'd rather have that face than none at all. I wouldn't care if no one would want me in their house. Hopefully they can do that for the woman that was attacked by a chimp.

I don't think they put the face on correctly. Its weird around the eyes and one jaw is puffed out.
Dumb & Dumber

Everything was done correctly. What they did not mention was the huge swarm of African bees just outside the medical facility.
Leave it to Barcelona's Vall d'Hebron hospital to turn out this poor guy only to have him do a face plant on the concrete after numerous bee stings.
You would think with all the plastic surgery now people would know that.
