I’m all for increased services for children with developmental disability but, I am more in favor of funding and programs for adults with DD. There are many more individuals with DD who are over 18 than under 18. Developmental disabilities typically have a life-long impact and several studies have shown that adults with cognitive impairment are life-long learners. The need for programs and services does not end at age 18, 21, or 51. The trouble is that almost all resources are given to school-aged children. It’s true that Early Intervention can prevent or lessen the effects of disability on long-term functioning but therapy can continue to effect functional change throughout a lifetime. Children with disabilities should not be written off when they reach that magic birthday. Adults with DD need help too!
