Hoorah for this story making the news. People need to be aware that "alternatives" exist. "Modern medicine" as it's called is really a political, economic entity.....there are older more established systems of medicine such as Chinese medicine, Homeopathy, Aryudeva that have much to offer. Remembering of course that no doctor ever healed a patient of anything.
Thank You Dr.Toth for contributing your thoughts here! I am "just" a regular college educated person who often grasps for the words that reflect my true feelings whenever someone asks me my opinion of the current health care scene. The phrase "modern medicine" creates the idea that anything created before it is somehow outdated or unnecessary. I tend to say something like, "what do you mean by doctor? are you talking about a body doctor, a tooth doctor, an eye doctor, or are you referring to any so called health professional you insurance will cover?" I often refer to the family physician as "the body doctor" because I am so frustrated at the mechanistic way I have been treated during the "consultation". My goal is to keep talking about this because change won't happen unless people realize that change is possible. From now on I will be saying things like, "oh, you mean political medicine? Are you referring to economic medical treatment?"
Shawn, you missed the comma. Like chocolate, (see the comma) cocoa is rich... So excuse yourself again for not reading the sentence correctly and being so quick to find fault.
Alternative medicine like homeopathy has no science behind it. Do some science and perhaps I may agree. The science I see does not put any of your suggestions in a very good light.
The studies in the story do call the drug companies into question. They push drugs with SO little benefit and such high costs that THEY should be put under more strict control. Prescribe massage, not Paxil.
There is plenty of scientific evidence behind alternative medicines. Naturopathic doctors from one of the four naturopathic medical schools in the states have to take the same courses that medical doctors do. They just learn to use natural things to help. The FDA and AMA want people to believe there is no scientific basis behind alternative medicines, so they put out false info. I have been greatly helped by naturopathic medicine. I would have been dead by now had I not made a change from a medical doctor to naturopathic. My legs had big blisters on them. My doctor didn't listen to me. I made the switch, was taken off the Actos I was taking and the blisters left. There are other things I have taken from my naturopathic doctor that have helped other conditions in me. Do we need medical doctors? Oh, probably. Can't see why the two fields can't work together, however. I'd love it if Medicare would include naturopathic doctors, but it doesn't.
I have also gone the last few years to a Naturopathic Doctor. I really like integrative doctors who use both methods, the conventional and the alternative approach. Since I have been going to my naturopathic doctor, I have very little arthiritis in my knees (where it was a constant problem before that). I also am taking quercitin starting about a month before my seasonal allergies and it totally has eliminated the swelling and blackness around my eyes (by the way for my whole life I have had back circles around my eyes till I went to a natruropathic dr). I have beautiful skin at age 58, everybody is always commenting on it. I have used both conventional and naturopathic supplements to help a colitis condition. I have very few health problems now as I have been addressing these issues one step at a time.
Yep...insurance covers most of these treatments...MY A$$!!!
My doc spent months prescribing me meds that were roughly $50 /mo after insurance, one medication would have been $400 a month but luckily I qualified for free doses due to my income. In reality, I could have joined a gym (I live in a climate where outdoor exercise is limited to nearly 3 months a year), massage, and natural treatments for much less and no negative side effects that I endured with the meds I was taking.
I finally took matters into my own hands and cut my work hours (the primary cause of my problems) and stopped my medications. I took a pay cut and I'm modifiying my diet and exercise schedule, but I feel tons better. MED FREE!!
Big Pharma doesn't want insurance to pay for these treatments because they won't make as many billions.
The sentence that he mentioned insurance covers these items just says that more insurance companies are covering it. If these item are proven to work then it would be smart for insurance companies to cover them as they are cheaper. The insurance that I am through encourages the cheaper alternative with medicine use as if there is a generic one available then that is what they cover. My insurance does cover some of these treatments which I haven't used but should look at it once I am able to relocate as areas like acupuncture isn't available in my region of the state.
I've tried glucosamine and chondroitin for joint pain, didn't work. Made it worse. Maybe that's because I have psoriatic arthritis, not osteoarthritis, so there's that.
I drink about a quart or two of green tea daily. Since I have started this program, I feel much more energized and now I walk at least 4-6 miles daily. My arthritis is absolutely gone and I have lost 20lbs, skin appears healthier. I have always used alternative methods over regular physicians medical advise with drugs. I was on Coumidin for three years and it almost killed me. I stopped that use and now use a daily aspirin and my heart problems have vanished and I fee like I'm 20 something and in reality I am 65, 6'1", 178, and can do just about anything without pain or worry.
in the begining of man their where only herbs and they where taught how to be used by the children of the gods too the peoples all over certain parts of the world and then along the way man-kind invented the pill and started to make up this own remedies for what ever the illness, but the basic base of these pills were still some kind of herb.these days many so called doctors make the wrong call on many illnesses and in turn you dont get cured you just temporary reliel has long as you keep on taking those pills.but there is a cure for just about anything and everything but if most doctors would cure you then the big companies would loose billions of dollars in the selling of these pills and in research funding, you see not all but many are all about the money and not about you ...this is what america has come too.
If there was a cure for just about anything, where is the HIV cure, or the cure for Cancer, or the cure for the common cold. The companies wouldn't lose money as their is no silver bullet. One item may not fix everything in a specific disease range or group.
Actually there are some specific supplements that really help to prevent getting the common cold if a person takes them right away when first having symptoms. I would say when I take a supplement recommended by my naturopathic called Biovegetarian, that 90% of the time or better I do not come down with the cold. And the few times I have gotten a cold, the Biovegetarian helps me get over it quicker. It is an immune builder. And I need it because I work with at risk teenagers.
Trouble is, things like massage do work for depression and all that, of course for physical ailments too. But insurance doesn't cover these expensive treatments! Holistic cures covered by insurance; a nice dream that I sure hope comes true someday!
I seriously don't get why people feel the need to correct everyone else's grammer. Who cares if someone mispelled something or forgot a comma. We're not in school.. Now onto the article. I think it's awesome that Rhodiola is good for treating anxiety. I know someone who suffers from anxiety and depression, so I will for sure be telling them about this!
The title says "cures"... but the article demonstrates potential "treatments". A world of difference there. Also, there's a huge mind-body connection with any treatment. If a person believes eating tree bark will improve their headaches, for example, there's a good chance it will. The bark doesn't do anything in reality, it's the belief that it works that promotes the improvement. Certainly there are tons of true physical ailments, but if we can truly tap into our body's own healing powers thru control of our thoughts, we will not be so dependent on prescription meds and flaky so-called natural "cures".
All of today's medicines are driven by the pharmaceutical companies and their lobbyists, hence the reason insurance companies don't bother with holistic medicines even though they (sometimes) work better than pills. Come on insurance carriers - why not think outside the box for a change and actually help people who want/need these alternative therapies! You're not going to lose anything and might gain the respect of millions who enjoy (and need) these treatments.
I have been suffering from insomnia for most of this year and starting looking into natural remedies and so far, I have found some that work. This is one site I look at regularly.
Editors & writer, where is the retraction/correction? At the top of the article should be the statement from NIH that they have not proven any of these!
This was published two days ago by the director of NIH:"Simply put, the article does not accurately portray the state of the science nor the perspective of NIH. First, it significantly overstates the strength of the evidence available, which in most cases is derived from small preliminary studies. While interesting, these data cannot be viewed as a sufficient basis for unequivocal government recommendations, much less use of the word "cure."
Who writes this stuff: Like chocolate cocoa is rich in antioxidants.. Excuse me but chocolate is made from cocoa.

That is why they call it a "practice" they just keep practicing. The body heals and the doctor sends the bills.

I think he meant that it was a silly sentence to begin with. It would be akin to saying 'Like butter, milk is has calcium.'
Mitchell
Okay, so I missed the comma. The point is chocolate is made from cocoa, everyone knows this except the person who wrote this article.

Anybody who says there is no science behind something they don't understand should take a course in science and epistemology.

I have taken Valerian root and ibuprofen for chronic back pain for the past 30 years and it works for me.
I have not become addicted to prescription meds, like I would have if I had to take them instead. And no; Valerian root is not addictive.
I was told in my 20's that I would be in a wheel chair in my late 30's or early 40's. I am 64 and still ambling along

LOSERS!!
Good for you! I wished millions would follow your example. Our health care problems would shrink dramatically.

That could apply to anywhere, not just America.

So if someone is a Doctor in Chinese Medicine that means they have not healed anyone? That would be the case since no Dr. fixes anything.
Not saying that Western medicine is not without it's problems but it has helped me a lot over the past few years.

grammar*
Haha, here I go correcting my own grammar. I hate when I do that...write a big paragraph and then realize I misspelled something..
