Imagine if this therapy works. What's the first thing the patient is going to say...yes you guessed it. "Oh! Thank God. My prayers have been answered." Sure enough, religion will get the credit....and it's religion that has held and is trying to hold this therapy from ever happening. Go figure?????

I knew someone was going to come in and bash religion when the article says "But the FDA placed any potential study on hold in August because some mice treated with GRNOPC1 developed microscopic spinal cysts."
Sure, some people believe using human embryos was a bad idea and it was put on hold, but it led to a huge breakthrough. Cloned human embryos. This I have no problem with. But just like so many on the left feel the need to push their ideals of anti-war in the name of all of the human lives lost, it's nothing short of bigotry to denounce people who speak out for unborn children who, without a tragedy during child birth or abortion, would be born and become a person just like you & I.

Nope. Not if it was determined that the test procedure was part of the problem. But I guess people are just supposed to quit when things don't work the first time.
Absolutely, and thank what ever Gods one believes in. It is about time the FDA moves forward with this important research and treatment. We have so many Vets that will be helped now that the way for more testing will be coming with the approval of this first FDA approval.
Don't care what any of you religious people think, believe or preach. We have been given the intelligence to use our own bodies to heal, and now that we can take stem cells from other sources than aborted babies, there should be no end to the advancement in treatments of all kinds of illness.

Exactly. To think that Christian mythology should have been allowed to stand in the way of this promising line of research for as long as it did is infuriating. If Christians want to worship the empty air, that is entirely their business. However, when they start trying to stand in the way of the ending of human suffering, they deserve to be publicly scored.

Yes, they can take stem cells from other sources than aborted babies. But in this experiment...they use embryonic stem cells. Oh...also thanks for calling them babies instead of a glob of cells. Maybe that little toddler who has cerebral palsy can give his or her life over to make perfect others.

Get your facts straight...embryonic stem cells are obtained from frozen cells left over following in-vitro fertilization procedures and would have been discarded otherwise. The parents/patients give consent for the excess cells to be used to save and improve the lives of others. Everyone twists the facts to push their own agenda.
Also, changing the test is exactly what they should have done. You dont throw out the whole batch (treatment) just because of a flaw. ALL treatment, medication etc has negative side effects. The only question to ask and answer is, does the cure and benefit outweigh the risks? Example: People with respiratory conditions take steroid medications long-term. Steroid medications can cause diabetes and a ton of other problems but I'm sure one would rather breath and keep living then worry about diabetes, right?

It would have been nice if Cristofer Reeves(not sure of spelling)would have lived long enough to reap the benefits of therapy involving stem cells. I believe he was a proponent of such research.
My firm, Department B (www.departmentb.com), is in the process of working with physicians to deliver adult stem cell treatment and will be the first to bring these treatments to medical practices in the US.
If we can beyond the emotions attached and look at the science these treatments work, there is no question regenerative medicine is the wave of the future.
I couldn't live with myself knowing that my "health" was the result of someone else's death which was expressly for that purpose. I would not accept killing someone -regardless of how many people agree to it (parents, clinics, etc) just to improve my own or the health of someone close to me.

Many, many others do not feel the way you do, so please do not deny them this treatment.
They don't kill anyone for the stem cells, I don't know where you got that idea from. They simply take (iirc) frozen human blastocysts (basically an egg with some cellular division beginning in it... a ball of cells) that were meant for destruction anyhow and use those.
If you're concerned about the fact that that human blastocyst never got the chance to develop into a human being, at least now they can find noble ends rather than simply be incinerated.
I disagree with Embryonice Stem Cell use, why can't we be satisfied using Adult Stem Cells that can be gathered without sacrifice of any life.

RELIGION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. These are humans in the first stages of their lives. It is not ethical to grow them and take their lives for the sake of any other human being. I DON'T CARE if they are the "LEFT OVER" EMBRYOS OR UNWANTED. They are still humans. Illness is awful but taking another's life to cure yourself is barbaric.

verno, you really need to diservify your education on what different groups believe. You're implying this other group thinks it's ok for the embryos to end up on the shelf and facing being tossed in a dumpster to begin with.

these are mere cells that have the POTENTIAL for development to become a fetus. We grow bacteria everyday that we change into medicine...should we stop that too? Why not afford the same respect for those bacterias....they have potential to grow into spores , grow and reproduce.....heck - we should call them little humans too !!! why are human stem cells only respected as "life" and not other bacterias that could grow mold and make cheeses and medicines? How about yeast? maybe we should campaign and stop the salughter of yeast cells when making bread or beer....those poor yeast cells had the right to grow and develope and reproduce.... sounds ridiculous - right?
stem cells don't constitute life any more than a brick constitutes a house.
Both only have the potential to change into something else given the opportunity.
There is a terrible misconception in this country about where stem cells come from. When couples visit infertility clinics the woman's ova are collected along with the man's sperm. The eggs are then fertilized and used in how ever many cycles it takes either for a sucessful pregnancy or until the couples run out of money. Usually thwere are a number of fertilized eggs (embryos) left after pregnancy is accomplished. In the past they were destroyed, now the couple can sign a release allowing the embryos to be used in stem cell research instead of being destroyed.

I'm an Agnostic...which means I don't have a clear knowledge of Christ, if he existed, or what his teachings meant (if any). Until you show me scientific proof that he walked this earth, performed said miracles, and was the son of "God", then your argument is trivial at best. They dont' attack people who dont' believe the way they do though and acknowlege that doing so is no better than the people who knock on their door to teach religion.
