The big deal was that all the babies were born so healthy that nothing was needed for them to survive, that was a big deal for the hospital and the doctors.
And No the state of Texas is not. She is not the gosling mom or the octomom trying to suck anyone dry.
Will you like to meet her so you can see for youself what kind of person she is? instead of making up your mind due to some other "moms" that use their kids to obtain monetary gain?
And please don't reffer to my nephews and nieces as a litter, they are not dogs or cats, they are babies, beautiful, healthy babies.

Why do they make such a big deal out of these multiples births when fertility drugs are used?? It is only REALLY is unique when it happens WITHOUT the fertility drugs.
The big deal is that her pregnancy lasted farther long than most multiple pregnancies, the babies are really healthy, have really good weight, and are bigger than any other set of multiple babies born up to now.
You people seem not to actually read or listen to the news.
You guys just go jumping around making conclusions without knowing the facts.
I agree with @Sickofit. If fertility drugs are used, then it's not "special". It may sound harsh, but unless a woman becomes pregnant with mulitples all on her own, no drugs, etc used, then, I am not impressed.
Yes, it's great that they were all healthy. I don't think anyone is saying it's not. It's just, we've become so saturated with these stories of mulitple births, that it's not really news anymore. At least, that's my opinion.
@vr_vanessa, this is only special to you, because you're family.
Well, at least the babies are healthy! Good for them! And the taxpayer that isn't stuck with millions of dollars in hospital bills that the parents and insurance company can't afford to or won't pay.
Now if someone will guarantee that the parents won't get taxpayer help in raising them, I'll be as happy as a clam. If no guarantee, then there oughta be a law passed that anybody birthing more than two children at one time using fertility drugs will NEVER get taxpayer help. It's too easy for these parents to overlook the fact that this can happen with fertility drugs and then they assume the government is going to be there to help. The parents make the choice. They can have the consequences of their gamble then, too. It's called "personal responsibility", folks.
I believe the Dionne quintuplets were born with the aid of one doctor, and were not conceived with the aid of fertility drugs... let's get over this mania of women having litters...the chances that one or more of those babies having developmental problems I would imagine is quite high.
This fits right in with my disgust at the media for making a big deal of the couple who just had, what, their nineteenth child? I think it is unconscionable to have that many biological children, if they are so in love with kids, adopt some!
right on, this is ridiculous, can't Dr's be more responsible when doing fertility treatments, they should only allow a small number 1-3 eggs put back in to have a child. I think adoption is the way to go, especially when you have 18 already. I don't want to hear about them again, I wish.
If the fertility Dr. is ethical, they ultrasound women before and during ovulation, if ovulating too many eggs the parents are told NOT to try to make a baby (no sex). This greatly lowers the chances of high-order multiples. But that would assume that the parents have ethics as well. They are VERY LUCKY that they have no serious health issues at the moment. But they also haven't started learning yet.
Which orphanage have you been working at FluffyPinkKitten? Where are the orphanges in this country? I don't think that we have very many, if any, of them anymore. Current estimate 6.9 billion
10 billion between 2030 and 2050 depending on which model you look at.
At the time of Jesus Christ, the world population was less than 2/3 the current US population.
In just over 30 years the world population has basically doubled to nearly 7 billion.
Do you really think anyone has any business having 5 children?
And yes it is my business. I am a tax payer and my taxes and insurance preimums pay for these kids. And my taxes and insurance premiums go up to cover the cost of these kids. And children that grow up without enough resources are less likely to become fully productive members of society. So yes it is my business. A third of US high school students drop out and a frightening percentage teenagers cannot read, write or perform basic math at an eighth grade level. 20-30% of American adults are functionally illiterate, depending on how it's defined.
The jobs of the future will require a highly educated workforce and that education starts at home from the day a child comes home. Kindergarten is too late. This requires a lot of quality one-on-one parenting and the financial resources for pre-school.
It kind of depresses me because my husband and I have been trying for about a year and my first pregnancy ended in an ectopic miscarriage. I too was taking fertility drugs (Clomid) and it caused me to have several cysts on my ovaries. All I want is to be able to have one.
This story is a lucky one because all I've ever heard about when women are taking fertility drugs are the negative side effects and lack of pregnancy. I live about three hours away from this woman and I will be the first to tell you that it takes a while for people to get welfare benefits in Texas. You normally get rejected the first time, no matter your situation. In earlier and harder times in life, I had friends that had to revert to using welfare benefits long enough to help them get stable jobs to support their families. They even had more than one child to worry about. It was an embarrassment for them that they had to require aid. As soon as they were able, they pulled themselves off of it immediately. They had a lot of pride in themselves.
I think it's amazing she was able to have five. However, with fertility drugs, it's not hard to have multiples. A friend of mine was also taking fertility drugs and she had triplets: two boys and a girl. I am a twin myself, but my mother didn't conceive on fertility drugs. I don't even think they were really on an open market in the early '80's. My whole point is to get across how dangerous some of these fertility drugs can be, and how dangerous multiple births can also be. The fact that there were 23 doctors to aid in the birth shows that they had to be extremely cautious.
Now, with that being said, one woman that REALLY gets my goat is that Suleman mutant. She just had all those children for publicity. I don't think the woman in this story was going for that kind of extremity, I think she was just a woman who had a significant amount of multiple births. Suleman makes my stomach hurt whenever I see her because of the fact that she had six, some of them with severe mental handicaps, and decided to in-vitro herself for eight more. Honestly, the doctors that did that should've been stripped of their licenses. My sister and I were large for twins (5'13" and 6'3"), but when I saw the pictures of the octuplets after they were born, my heart fell into the pit of my stomach because they had to require so much medical care for being born so small.
That's my piece, I'm sorry for ranting, I hope everything that's best in the world happens for this family and that they are responsible parents for those babies. Those precious angels deserve nothing less.
Whats wrong with adopting? Or are you that selfish that if the kid isn't biologically yours you don't want it. Stop over populating this world and give a child who doesn't have a home, a home. You only want one, and obviously having one isn't in your cards so adopt.
People like you are selfish. You don't have to create one to have one.
I'm selfish because I want to have my own child? Wow. Why don't you look at my comments down before you accuse me of that. You would know that if I cannot conceive we're going to adopt.
adopt before hand, you don't need to pop out a kid to be a parent. The idea you HAVE to conceive is very selfish. You don't have too, wanting your own child before thinking of other is selfish. You are selfish.
Do you have $10K on hand? I didn't think so. My hospital bills for having a baby would be much less than that. So you are selfish for wanting me to spend more money because you feel it's appropriate. I want to conceive, anyone that wants to be a mother wants to. You can't change what's biologically ingrained in us. Plus, it's my insurance benefits that cover it. Insurance doesn't cover adoption. It even takes time to get said adopted child added to insurance. My aunt and uncle adopted two kids, a little boy and little girl, from Russia. It took them FOREVER to get Oksana and Alex's information straight enough to get them insurance. It has no impact on you whatsoever, and I personally think you're selfish for inflicting others with your opinion.
jessica #6, You are Wrong, wrong, wrong! Medicaid and food stamps are federal programs. There is no waiting more than 30 days. Most applications are processed within 2 weeks. The information is all on the Net. However, my information comes from personal business knowledge.
You have no co-pay on your insurance? The hospital bills could be millions so, therefore, $10,000 wouldn't even cover a usual 20% co-pay or even a 10% co-pay.
And no, not all women feel they NEED to conceive to be a mother. You may feel that way but don't put that on all of us.
"Each of us is responsible for one life only, and that is our own. Each of us is immeasurably far from being perfect and the task of perfecting our own life and character is one that requires all our attention, our will-power and energy. If we allow our attention and energy to be taken up in efforts to keep others right and remedy their faults,we are wasting precious time. "
All of you all just need to chill. I mean do you think they mean to have "litters" of kids? And thats not the correct wording and i don't know what word is. And if she does want to become another reality show mom then and you don't like it then DON"T watch. thats all there is to it. don't judge thats not up to us. sorry but it's not.
Meggie b, when the taxpayer is footing some or all of the bill, the taxpayer has a right to "judge". BTW, the word would be "multiples".
If the multiples over twins are naturally conceived (no fertility aid whatsoever) like the Dionne quints, I have NO problem with that. But these parents know the risk. It's the same as women over 40, who we all know are much more likely to have a Down Syndrome baby, going ahead and getting pregnant anyway and needs taxpayer money for special training, care, etc. If people want to make those choices, then they need to accept the consequences. Period.
These babies are ALL premature. They all needed oxygen. Their lungs are not well developed. As a premie myself back in the 50's, I'm suffering now with lung problems due in part to being a premie. So don't tell me they are all healthy. Those types of delayed problems haven't been documented in studies but the anecdotal evidence is there. The true and accurate state of their health won't be known for many years.
I don't want to come across as but mean you all need to chill. I mean do you think they mean to have "litters" of kids? And that's not the correct wording and i don't know what word is. And if she does want to become another reality show mom then and you don't like it then DON"T watch. that's all there is to it. I know it sucks that we have to support them but fact is we do. Don't judge others that's not up to us. sorry but it's not.
I think that the world should congratulate this couple and wish them and their children well.
If they could afford fertility drugs they surrley have insurance of their own. Not all people that have multiple kids need Social Services to raise them.
The problem is people like to make snap judgements, just remember that only the all mighty can judge us. Maybe HE wanted them to have all 5 kids they way they did. HE knows whats best for each of us.
Doesn't anyone think it's kind of funny how religious followers think it's God's handiwork when people use fertility drugs (not natural by the way), and think it's God's handiwork when people can't have children and they adopt, and think it's God's handiwork when they have 19 children naturally...can't someone just decide? Personally I think if it was really "God's work" there would be some sort of rule there. Or truly realize that if all of that is really God's handiwork, then abortion would also have to be God's handiwork, just by natural law.
Fertility drugs and multiple births by drugs...it's a bit selfish. If you try FOR YEARS to have biological children on your own and just can't, why would you risk having 3, 4 or 5 or health related issues just to selfishly have your "own" when there are SO many children that do not have homes. Seriously. Are your genes SO amazingly better than anyone else's that you need to breed? Sounds a little racist almost.
I look at my kids and they are awesome because of how I raised them - not because their hair is like mine - seriously. Having children is about giving love to another human, not about creating a clone of yourself.
That's probably because some women feel less of a woman because they cannot have children. I'm not saying that ALL WOMEN have that same perception, but if you were told that you couldn't have children, wouldn't you hurt, even if just a little?
I agree about the adoption thing, and my husband and I are looking into that next course of action if we find out that it's confirmed I cannot bear children. It's a mindset that many people don't think about, myself included. Because I love my husband so very much, it's hard to picture not being able to have a child that shares our features collectively, and I think there are women out there that feel the same way. That's very true that fertility drugs are very not natural, and some religious groups actually look down on the use of them. I myself took the Clomid not knowing it was a fertility drug. I left the doctor that gave it to me because he didn't explain that medicine to me and wound up having a miscarriage because of it.
However, my current doctor is wonderful and shares my views as a Catholic. She gives me both the medical and theological sides of my treatments and my husband and I are thrilled to death with her. She's a gentle soul that helped me through the pain of my miscarriage. So the next plan of action is to stay off the fertility meds and try to conceive naturally. I never wanted to conceive on them in the first place. So hopefully we'll be able to have a child. If we don't, then we will look at adoption. It's always been a possibility, anyhow.
I get that...I was pregnant 7 times to actually deliver twice, and had a hysterectomy at a young age. I've been through a lot and understand the feeling.
It takes a lot of strength to do what you're doing. Admirable :)
Believe me, if I could adopt right now I so would. We can't even try again until almost next year thanks to the methotrexate shots that I got in my hips. I was honestly so disappointed with the last doctor. He knew because of my beliefs that I didn't want to get involved with anything like that. That's why I was so surprised and so disappointed that he had given me the Clomid. (I thought the Clomid was something that would help with amenorrhea. I was diagnosed with that and he had put me on several things, so I thought that was just one of them, not a fertility drug!) He actually referred me to this doctor I have now and she's a truly amazing person.
I'm so sorry to hear about your past miscarriages! For the longest time I couldn't really get the support I needed because I didn't know anyone who had been through what I had. So now we're just waiting to see if it's possible to even conceive. As soon as I hear otherwise, we're going to file for adoption. My husband and I love children very much (I really miss being a teacher!) and really have a lot of love to give. It was so obvious whenever we adopted our dog, Chinook. :)
Jessica, you must know by now that you have to be your own best advocate for health care. To take a med without knowing WHAT it is and what it is FOR is totally irresponsible. I've had brain surgery and knew every drug was going to be given me before, during and after surgery. It's called "ask the doctor, surgeon, anesthesis, etc.", and even those in various unusual circumstances that could come up. I hope you learned from that!
If you feel "less of a woman" because you can't have children, then you aren't mature enough to have one anyway. Anything that is external (including children) is not where a mentally healthy woman gets her identity. Your concept of who you are comes from within, not from without. Please do some counseling to increase your sense of identity whether you have a natural child, those brought on by fertility drugs, or choose to adopt one. No child should have to come into this world having the burden on it to give you identity as a woman.
I regret if you read my advice as mean spirited. It is NOT meant that way. I'm doing it because it's important for all of us to be involved in our health care decisions, including our mental health, and sometimes the picture that is painted so people thoroughly understand that, is not the portrait they want to see.
I wish we humans didn't have this need to reproduce. If more people would stop reproducing, think of all the benifits. Less carbon footprint, more employment, less expense, and higher quality of life.
Actually, Anni, for the American Caucasian/European culture to continue, it's reproduction rate must be over 2. It's something like 2.8. That's why the prediction that the Latino culture will be the "American" culture in less than 30 years is significant for Caucasians. Caucasian birth rates are too low to sustain an American Caucasian/European culture. Many European countries are facing a predicted Black culture within 30 years, due to the influx of peoples from Africa, Somalia, and other predominately Muslim countries where their birthrate is approximately 8 (something like 7.8). England and France are already seeing the effects of this immigration. France is pass the point of no return and England is nearing that point. The British aren't happy about it at all! This data is on the Net in case your interested in learning about it.
For everyone who is insulting and degrading this family…shame on you. Maybe this family has a wealthy income and can absolutely afford having five children. Just because there are a few people in this world who could not and made it public should not give you reason to stereotype this family into being one those. Maybe they were unsuccessful in having children and required help with fertility drugs… so what… Congratulations to the family and blessings to the children that they grow up to be healthy and happy
I took Clomid and was told it is not associated with multiple births. It was the first thing we tried and ended up with triplets. To all those holier than thou people who judge me for taking fertility drugs and ending up with multiples instead of adopting-- we can't afford to put down $10K+ to adopt.
Why don't you anti fertility guys get off our backs and go to the high schools and (gasp) middle schools and spread some birth control pills and condoms around because we're aren't the ones having sex in the back of cars and giving birth at prom.
I don't judge you in the least, and had even thought about IVF myself before I became Catholic. I think that's wonderful that you had triplets; I'm a twin myself and it's a neat experience. Like I told Tina, I just hope I'm able to conceive at all. If not, we're looking into adoption. I can't imagine how full your hands are! :3
Surprise TheLittleD!!!!! I paid less than $20 bucks for a round of generic Clomid. Insurance did not cover it. And THAT was before I found out it's on the Walmart cheap RX plan.
I suggest you do a little research. psst. try google
And oh yes, $20 was a little steep for me back then, being in the midst of a recession and all. So I slept with your man/woman and cha ching, I even had enough left over for an Ipod. Idiot.
Perhaps if our teenagers and middle schoolers didn't see this glorification of using fertility drugs that end in pregnancies of more than twns, they wouldn't think it's so cool to have a baby. When they don't SEE the struggles of the families of 4, 5 and more, and only HEAR "It's really hard!", the struggle isn't real to them. Besides, it's scientifically proven that teenagers don't have developed enough brains to make good choices. The women I know of who have used the drugs and bore more than 2 children are well into their 20's, if not 30's. Therefore, their brains are fully developed but they approach having children on a purely "I want to" emotional basis, rather than seriously assessing the risks. I seriously can't imagine gambling with the potential life of another human being and taking the chance that one or all could die just because I wanted to have a baby. That's like being in a firing squad, hoping you don't have the real bullet that going to kill. I couldn't take that gamble either. Life is too precious to me.
Thanks for all of you that made possitive comments about my nieces and nephews, they are all doing very well, thanks for the prayers. Thats all we had asked for PRAYERS.
To everyone else that think they have to pay for them, don't assume things, please listen to the interviews or read them. My sister and her husband wanted a kid, she has insurance, her and her husband have jobs (he actually owns a business)
Stop making things up, nobody has asked anyone for anything. Grow up
Thanks again for all those nice comments, prayers and blessings
what adorable children, I wish your sister, her husband and the babies all the best, they seem very healthy, I can understand the desire for children and taking fertility drugs, of course, you can't predict how many embryos will be conceived, I am glad they felt like they were able to take care of the five that were conceived, and didn't have to make a choice to abort any of them. Good luck to all of you, your lives will never be the same, LOL
Despite my views on the subject of using fertility drugs, I absolutely do wish the very best for the babies and parents. I sincerely hope the fact that their lungs were not fully developed will not be too much of a burden for them as they age as it's been for me, being born a premie of 4 lbs, 2 oz. in the '50's. My best wishes to all.
The main reason my sister made it on the news is that ALL her kids were born healthy, and the were born in the hspital they were (first time they had a big delivery like that) and that speaks really good for te hospital ad their staff.
How many quints have you seen on the news born with more than 2lbs each? not many I can tell you that, or how many moms made it pass the 26th week of the pregnancy? not many neither.
Exactly!!! Congrats to your sister and family! I know everyone likes to make fun of the Sulemon family, but if you forget all that for a moment, you can't help but to be amazed at how big they were for octuplets, she did an amazing job carrying them!
congratulations to the new parents. As a NICU nurse I am all for fertility drugs, keep those multiples coming JOB SECURITY!! It's the moms on drugs we don't like.
WOW! Job security! You just like the legal drugs, apparently. They can be, in the case of premies, just as harmful. The OB/GYN doctors don't want to tell you about the problems people who were born premies have as they age because it would take the joy away from the fact that the children even lived! In fact, some of them will deny it because follow-up studies haven't been done yet. And they get more revenue delivering multiples, and the hospital gets more revenue with multiples, too, so there's no incentive for a longterm study being done. There is much anecdotal evidence but that isn't sufficient. I understand that. Even you, as a NICU nurse are probably not aware of the problems faced by people like me who were born as a premie in the '50's. Having better care now is not a remedy. It's totally based on the fact that premies lungs are NOT fully formed at birth. Those lungs are, and will always be, immature. You may have to do some digging to find the information, but it's out there. My pulmonologist is aware. You may want to start with that field of study.
I think it is great! As long as the parents have the means to care for them properly I don't see a reason at all this could be bad- as so many people seem to believe now adays that if you have more than 2 kids, you are being a horrible person.
Vanessa....Congratulations to your sister & BIL, you and your family. Five little miracles in Houston born healthy is certainly something to smile and rejoice about! :)
To those of you who (Bev, TLD, Barb) you certainly are entitled to your opinions.. but I feel sorry for you that you are so filled with hate and disgust. If you don't like the way things are in America then feel free to move elsewhere... (perhaps where they have the controlling- communistic- limited children-way of life you apparently desire?)
I hope she is not planning on becoming another reality show about women who are giving birth to litters.
There are other women who have outdone her so she is no big deal now.
Wonder if the state of Texas is going to be picking up her tab for this one??
No, she is not.
The big deal was that all the babies were born so healthy that nothing was needed for them to survive, that was a big deal for the hospital and the doctors.
And No the state of Texas is not. She is not the gosling mom or the octomom trying to suck anyone dry.

Mayorga-Real and her husband, Enrique Mayorga, were using fertility drugs.
right on, this is ridiculous, can't Dr's be more responsible when doing fertility treatments, they should only allow a small number 1-3 eggs put back in to have a child. I think adoption is the way to go, especially when you have 18 already. I don't want to hear about them again, I wish.
the only fertility drugs used here were the ones to help her ovulate, plese do your homework before making comments.
there were no eggs put back, and what 18 kids are you talking aboout?
there are twins in both sides of the families, just to let you know.
she is talking about the show...18 or 19 and counting...
If the fertility Dr. is ethical, they ultrasound women before and during ovulation, if ovulating too many eggs the parents are told NOT to try to make a baby (no sex).
WELL EXCUSE ME FLUFFY PINK !!!!!
Don't you have quite the attitude going on about this discussion. Might you be a relative of the person in this article??
Whatever the case-brainless people like you-make insignificant comments like yours.
Keep your claws in now kitty! MEOW

Why don't you go choke on an eggroll!
Bev- Nature will deal with the situation eventually swiftly and without mercy.
It should be considered that this couple wanted children and had fertility problems hence, the drugs.
Perhaps, when informed there were 5 embryos, they chose to allow the pregnancy to continue as it was without aborting any of the embryos.
FPK is spot on.
Each of us is immeasurably far from being perfect and the task of perfecting our own life and
character is one that requires all our attention, our will-power and energy. If we allow our attention and energy to be taken up in efforts to keep others right and remedy their faults,we are wasting precious time. "
ugh. I wish people would stop having litters of babies.
Hmmmm....five anchor babies born on our dole.......interesting.....Guess we'll all have to support them too.
There was not one thing said about whether they were "on our dole". Why does everyone assume that?
Don't judge others that's not up to us. sorry but it's not.
as long as I'm not paying for food & diapers, she/they can have all the babies they can afford.
Anyone ever hear or read the motto, "Live and let live?" We must not judge, least you are innocent in any wrong doing, yourself!
Very well said, Aida!
Very well put! You and Aida are spot on today with the positivity!
I really appreciate that compliment! :3
Tina @ #15, I totally agree.
Wonder if the tax payers will be picking up the tab for these five mistakes.
Seriously abortion is cheaper. Save money and go green
Did you asked your mother if she thought the same thing about you?
I think not, you are still breathing, and by your comment you must not be a nice person.
I wish we humans didn't have this need to reproduce. If more people would stop reproducing, think of all the benifits. Less carbon footprint, more employment, less expense, and higher quality of life.
You should had told that to your mom, one less moron walking and breathing in earth.
Yes, you hipster lunatic, and then extinction of the human race. *eyeroll*
but you can afford to use fertility drugs and have three kids? Or are tax payers feeding your three brats? I am guessing it's the latter.
Idiot.
Thank you, Jessica! Good luck to you!
Triplet mom I hope your little ones are doing great.
Jessica, good luck
Guys thanks for your moral support
THATS WHY THEY WANTED TO INTERVIEW HER.
And I'm keeping her in my prayers! I just hope I'm lucky enough to conceive myself! :) Congrats to her and you too, aunty! :3
Congratulations to this family. May they all have a long and happy life. I had 7, all one at a time, so five at one time is great.
