Just google pet food recall 2010. It's been all over the news lately. It actually got my cat sick and I had already spent $200 at the vet before the recall came out.
Ok so apparently there's 2 stories going on with the tained food. I dunno why MSNBC is reporting one from 2008 when there's one going on with pet food now.
Is 21 people getting sick over a 2 year period really an "outbreak"? The article also states that the plant that the salmonella was traced to was closed permanently in 2008. Little bit late to be writing this article now. Must have been a really slow news day.
We have 3 dogs. We wash their food & water bowls, their outtdoor kennel area is very clean, we pick up their waste daily, and our kids are way past the age of "snacking" on kibbles (and yes, they all 3 did at some point). When they were little we did try to pick up the bowls as soon as the dogs were done eating so they weren't playing with the dirty dishes. BUT, unless you cut off all human/pet contact, there will always be that possibility of passing diseases from one to the other. It's no different than when one child passes their cold to another. Not something anyone needs to lose sleep over.
We definitely don't need mass hysteria over this issue!
LOL, this is silly, but an interesting story. People, feed your kids, and watch your kids for pete's sake. We are not in the 1930's where the poor were forced to live on cat food and such.
Shoot, a friend of mine buys steaks for her dogs and she eat tuna from a can. She even spent 15K on new grass and fencing in her back yard on them as well. Then to top that all off, another 20k on diamond collars, and she drives a beat up old car. Her priorities along with many other people that have pets, are way out of whack!
However, buying any food, toy or product from China puts anyone at risk. Read the labels on your products and see where they are from before buying it. I know Wal-Mart buys a lot of food from china, our government is having China make vaccines for the American people as well. This way if a large number of people are killed, America can always blame China for it.
There are way too many mentally ill people in this world...no morals, no respect for humanity or justice...seems the constitution of the united states has long been forgotten....
Heck I raise my three kids on gravy train, other than barking all the time, their fine
LOL! ROFLMAO!..... kflann, Nice to see some comedic relief! One of the funniest posts I've read on here! Thanks for makin me laugh! But now it's gonna be hard for me to get back in a cursin mood again! <(*J*)>
One young mother told me how "cute" it was that her child--just learning to crawl--was snacking on kibble from the dogs' dish. I was appalled!
This is not "cute." More like "lazy." Most dogs are not neat eaters--their saliva is on the leftover food.
Some people let their dogs "free feed" rather than have a regular meal. Don't overfeed. Pick up the dish when the dog stops eating. The dog will adjust. Sterilize the food and water containers--the pet deserves clean dishes, too.
Clean the area where the pet eats. Lots little crumbs get scattered about.
Don't let children OR pets eat items from the floor. Would you?
This is all practical home hygiene and maybe adds 4 minutes to your daily routine. If you involve your child ("Let's wash Rover's dishes")--pretty soon children will prompt you to do it.
Jesus H. Christ - get the F over yourself. How sad and pathetic you are. I hope you sure as hell don't have kids, poly. They'll be social morons! Everything you said is just pure BS. It sounds to me like you don't know how to be responsible yourself so you feel the need to "preach" at everyone else.
I ate plenty of dog food as a little kid - never ONCE got sick. Probably helped me be healthier since I wasn't shuttered from the world by a parent like you. Kids I baby-sat ate dog food - they are PERFECTLY healthy and never once got sick. I probably know more normal healthy people who DID eat pet food than didn't. It's part of growing up if you have pets in the house.
Free feeding - do it, have always done it, won't stop now. Guess what??? MY DOGS ARE IN TIP TOP SHAPE. Just cause you graze like a cow, don't accuse the dog or other owners of not being responsible.
I do not know how long time ago you grew up, but right now I would be afraid to feed a dog with the current generation of pet food, much less a person...
Kids growing up eating mud pies and everything they can get their hands on is where immune systems develop. Don't get me wrong, you've got to keep an eye on it, but there is an opposite end of the spectrum where overprotecting leaves them more prone to diseases.
I feed my dogs a high quality food and even still they find things to eat outside. I dont worry too much, there is no stopping them unless I am watching them 24/7 and I do not have time to do that. They are out all day and roam our farm and they are perfectly healthy not to mention happy. I think some of the dog food companies have let thier quality go down the drain, but there are still good quality foods out there that are improoving every day, and they ARE safe for human consumption. Its actually a known fact that humans can get more nutrition from some dog foods than our own human foods.
poly, you make some good points. I henceforth will make more of an effort to keep everybody's dishes cleaner. btw---NO PLASTIC DISHES! They harbor nasties like crazy. My senior cat had bad bouts of cat acne 'til I gave him an antique porcelain fruit dish.
When my daughter was a toddler, she was obsessed with eating cat food. All these years later, she revealed just how much she ate on the sneak, Yuk!
As for off the floor--we observe the 5 second rule. I generally keep the kitchen floor pretty clean.
I don't free feed anyone. Who wants to eat something that's been sitting around? I don't. Why should I expect my fur kids to?
You really shouldn't eat dog food. You can get really sick. I have no idea why Scottie got so angry. You have to keep a clean house. You can get a staph infection from the bacteria that's in the dogs nose and saliva.
I clean up after the dogs just like I would the kids. But I don't follow them around neurotically disinfecting everything.
Ever try to fish something out of a Basset's mouth-good luck with that! Mine live to eat-from the floor, from outside, from the counter(no they ARE NOT allowed to) and before it even hits the floor-dogs are dogs-if they get sick-you clean it up-this too shall pass (sometimes both ends!)-you just can't be so paranoid about a few germs-the human body was made to withstand germs, we are actually making ourselves less immune by disinfecting so much.
Tell me this POLY--do you sanitize your dog's asses? Because you know they lick them. Do you sanitize their vomit? Dog's eat their own vomit. Do you sanitize the peed-on grass that your dog's eat?
Be realistic. Kids will be kids and it is unrealistic to watch 100% of the things they do, especially toddlers. Toddlers will stick anything in their mouths.
OMG I just can't get over it polly. HA ha ha ha aha aha aha aha aha a hahahaha your post is so pathetic and funny! You are so sorry and sad! Oh jeez, im dyin over that post! Seriously, though, you are important. People want to hear what you say, and they respect your crotchety opinion.
One young mother thought it was "cute"? You know what? It is cute! My little sister used to get into the cat food. She classified food in two ways; anything crunchy was a cookie and anything chewy was gum. One day my mom stumbled upon her with a mouth full of kitty kibble and she said, "Mmmmmmmm. Kitty cookies good!" Cute!
Seriously, get over yourself and quit being judgmental of other parenting techniques. There isn't just one "right" way to do it, and even if there were, I guarantee it wouldn't be your way.
Interesting timing. The FDA is trying to impose very strict standards about salmonella and pet food. they even want those guidelines to apply to raw food for dogs. Which actually means that companies will be forced to adulterate the food somehow as salmonella is naturally occurring and not a result of bad business practices.
This is old news put out at a time when this issue is up for comment with the FDA.
People should be more concerned where the meat is coming from. Rendering plants and other sources supply the raw ingredients for kibble. And it's not for human consumption
Because if it's only dog food, it couldn't possibly be in any way related the meat source that's processing those McDonald's burgers you're feeding your kids, right bruner?
They are little kids. In case you have never had one, they tend to touch things and then put their fingers in their mouths. It is impossible to catch them every time.
You post makes it seem like adults are doing it. *sigh* (so condescending)
First it was old folks eating cat food. Now it's dog food. Then it was melamine in the pet food. I think a little common sense of washing my hands and buying name brand pet food would fix most of the problems, but hey, that's just me.
1) It IS name brand pet food. 2) It's little kids, not old people

Omigod! Something else to be worried about. When will it ever end? Threat of nuclear war with Iran, economic depresson, oil leaking in the Gulf, war in Afghanistan, poison pet food. What if a comet actually hits our planet? Shudder.
Domestically-made pet food is usually held to the same standards for santiation as food meant for human consumption because people eat it! It sounds like a joke, but it is actually true. After all it often has high protein/nutritional content, but it's using parts that we don't want to eat (usually leftovers from meat processing plants). That's why kibble has that particular look to it - animals could care less if it looks like X's & O's, that's purely a visual appeal aimed at people. However, no amount of food safety is going to help you if you don't practice safe food handling and keep things clean, particularly your hands.
Totally agree with you, Robert! Whenever a story appears involving pets and kids, d....a.....s will keep the kids and get rid of the pets. It really should be the OTHER WAY AROUND!! I mean it!
Unfortunately that already happens, people abandon their pets for worry that they will bring contamination to their newborn babies....so sad. Especially if they have had the pet first! I think (some) people need to take more responsibility and care when it comes to pet ownership. Pets and babies can be great together. Just sayin'.
Stupid parents should not fed their children dog food. Again, it must have been a slow News Weekend. The article itself indicates that htere is no proof that children got sick because of dog food. MSNBC should have their documentation in hand before publishing false and misleading stories. Pet food is manufactured at a higher standard than "people food" and dogs and cats are less likely to cause disease's in people that people cause themselves. Dogs and cart are safer than people!!!
Speaking of parents, they should share the truth of our situation with their kids. The crooks are trying to censor every link on the issue, and even Joe Lieberman works to shut down the internet:
What exactly does a blog rant by a racist Jew-hater, who's too cowardly to even display his opinions under his real name, have to do with kids getting salmonella poisoning from dry dog food? You conspiracy theory jerks will try to spawn your stupidity in some of the stupidest, most totally unrelated forums! Guess that's because you actually DO know how stupid you are!
Hey chief, some of us have both pets & small children, so YES this would be important to us. It was important enough for me to read it. Yes there are other things going on in the world, but we all should want to keep those that live with us safe. You read the story, so what was the complaint for?
That figures. The FDA is confiscating and removing raw milk from grocery stores shelves because it's wholesome and untainted but they're allowing milk that's been homogenized and pasteurized and had all the nutrients removed to be sold. They're poising our water supplies with fluoride (especially fluoride of the toxic variety) and putting additives and preservatives into our food supplies. It makes sense that they're requiring our pets' food source to be bad as well.
When I was young my mother bought unpastuerized milk from a local farmer. I became sick with Brucellosis, very high fevers that would come and go and kept me in the hospital for several days. Pasteurization was not brought about to decline milk quality but make it safer for all of us. After I got sick my mother bought a home pasteurizer and did it herself. "Raw" is the new trend, but uninformed mostly. If I could go back I think I would have instituted pasteurizing sooner instead of being so seriously sick.
Pets are good for kids health, all those germs that pets bring in helps build up their immune system. Raise your kids in a sterilized, germ free, anti-bacterial zone and they'll be sick every other week.
Scratch the kids gettin' ill...what about the cats and dogs?...what brands are having issues? We don't need another repeat of China's melamine fiasco.

No? Well then, bugger off.

Polly Hedron, thanks for your awsome post! I laughed all the way through my lunchbreak. In thanks, i would like to return the favor.
1. pull down your pants
2.insert hand into rectum
3. remove gigantic stick
Thanks again!
I don't think I wouldn't go that far-

Also, dogs' mouths are cleaner than human mouths.
scotties it's spelled RESPONSABLE, you can't sound intelligent in writing unless you spell it correctly
i apologize it is RESPONSIBLE
Just because she said it was cute doesn't mean she didn't put an end to it.

If this is the case, it's another piece of evidence that NBC is nothing more than a propaganda arm for the Government, never to be believed.
As far as the pet food, my favorite was always Milk Bones, kept my teeth clean and white.
This article is a waste of space and time. There are so many things going on in the world & this is a headline! Someone is just out of touch.
Salmonella is a potentially fatal illness. I think it's important to identify where it comes from especially when it involves the kids.
Perhaps you should consider starting your own liberal, aka censored, news source then.
Yep. It's you.
Chief - I AGREE! Too many IMPORTANT things going on in this country and they are focusing on dog food? Pleeeeeease.
Because if it's only dog food, it couldn't possibly be in any way related the meat source that's processing those McDonald's burgers you're feeding your kids, right bruner?
*sigh* wash your hands people
They are little kids. In case you have never had one, they tend to touch things and then put their fingers in their mouths. It is impossible to catch them every time.
You post makes it seem like adults are doing it. *sigh* (so condescending)
Do the pets have to wash their paws too before eating? ;) Turning on the tap seems to be an issue for her.
1) I've had several.
2) You don't have to catch them "every time". Just when they're handling dog food. (WHY are they handling dog food?)
3) *sigh* Little kids are people too.

Actually pet food recalls on 'brand name' products are quite common. Buying a "brand name" food is no better than buying the cheapest generic food on the market. If you can find it in your local grocery store, it's not a premium food and a check of the ingredient label would show you that it is no better than a generic brand, just more expensive. Not true, FedUP.

Some fancy names on that list.
This happened over 2 years ago. The plant has been shut down since 2008. The people and animals who got sick were from 2006-2008. I'd say this isn't really news, if the problem has been solved.
ask yourself
If salmonella is naturally occurring in eggs what are they doing to our food to get rid of it??
why do we have such an increase in salmonella? And if adulterating our food is making it worse?
Why dont people who work with raw food every day do not get sick with salmonella?
Please take the blinders off.
Most ppl who work w/raw food everyday wear gloves, per regulations. In fact, now even most fast food restaurants wear gloves. We the consumers are the ones who have to watch out, cause the workers aren't always the most sanitary creatures. Why do we have such an increase in salmonella outbreaks???
hm.. have you ever seen the documentary called Food Inc.? they reveal many secrets about the food in America, its sickening.
Somebody gets sick or dies and all of a sudden you liberals want to regulate things, I can hear Rush now LOL
Right don't they know "Stupid people are supposed to die." That way the species improves over time. :{)
My sister almost died when in Mexico for 3 months by drinking unpasteurized milk. Salmonella. She was trying to avoid drinking the water.
Might want to know what you're talking about before spreading crap, TOR.
Pets are good for kids health, all those germs that pets bring in helps build up their immune system. Raise your kids in a sterilized, germ free, anti-bacterial zone and they'll be sick every other week.
Stop sharing the same utensils as your pets. Disgusting! Don't say you don't because I have seen it first hand from my friends. Nasty!
Good one Kflann!!! lol!
Sooo the title of this piece should be: "Careless parents fail to properly monitor their children"
no wonder there is an obesity problem in this country
