Well, I am one of many hundreds of thousands who DID contract H1N1 virus. Fortunately I saw a doctor immediately and was treated so that I was only sick for six weeks.
This was not a manufactured scare, either. Most people do not realize the flu epidemic of 1918-20 was also H1N1 virus. Nor do people realize that it made an initial appearance in many places with a milder form, then mutated and came roaring back with very deadly worldwide results the following year.
Study of that pandemic showed that the regions where people managed best to avoid infection or dealt with it best were those in which complete and accurate information was made public immediately. It was as a consequence of that epidemic that many advances were made in understanding, treating and eventually creating vaccines for flu and certain other viruses. People do not realize the risk involved - in most cases, it wasn't the virus which directly killed, but a very aggressive secondary disease that destroyed people's lungs. And that could happen again, too.
Before making uninformed and inaccurate comments, learn about this. An excellent and very readable book gives the story in great detail:
The Great Influenza: The story of the deadliest pandemic in history John M. Barry
Edwin-2Trees, I think you've been hangin' around too long in your two trees. It was pretty obvious by the comma in between that Jim 36203 meant he nearly died, and added that he was in the hospital for 8 days as an afterthought!
Gee, thanks Margaret - now we can officially go out and play! The ordinary flu kills approx. 250000 people per annum, countries spent billions researching the vacine and making it available to the general population at no cost, let's not mention the millions of hours of lost productivity as people lined up for the shots, schools closed, workers were paid overtime to clean institutions and now she can actually inform us with a straight face it's over UNTIL the pharma firms, lobbyists and others benefiting from such hoax will have us in their grips.
There's no excuse for an international group of "medical" people to declare such a pandemic in the first place regarding a bug which, at its peak, killed far less than seasonal flu. Medical professionals should know better than to "cry wolf" in ways which will harm their credibility in the case of a true pandemic. Once again, it seems, a government agency appears to make decisions based on power and control rather than the interests of the people.
While your entitled to your opinion, it is still nonsense. I went into some detail above in post 1.2, but to address in specific why government agencies are involved: A worldwide network was established after the H1N1 (yes, the same virus, not a "bug") pandemic of 1918-20 to help publich health agencies address any such future outbreaks. The WHO basically assumed that responsibility later. The risk was quite real, and I was certainly one of the many who contracted that illness last year - just after completing cancer treatment. Thank goodness the vaccine was handy, it was given very early and much reduced the effect.
there was no attempt at exercising power and control cynically over the world's peoples. Check my earlier post for an excellent book about this.
This is a wildly mis-stated article and an example of bad "journalism." A pandemic is defined as: an epidemic over a wide geographic area and affecting a large proportion of the population.
The reason the pandemic is over is that it has fallen below the threshold for both how widespread it is and for an epidemic. This does NOT mean that the threat of H1N1 is over.
There are three reasons for my statement:
1) The threat remains real because in order to prevent future occurrences of the pandemic, there must be "herd immunity." This requires that somewhere around 70% of the world's population to get H1N1 flu shots that are specific for the strain H1N1. This has never happened with flu shots and never will. The virus simply mutates too readily for herd immunity to be achieved. There is some speculation that if there were an outbreak in terms of virulence and mortality comparable to the 1918 Spanish flu that that number might be attained. But I sincerely doubt that there would be sufficient commitment of resources by the poorer under-developed and developing counties for this to happen.
2) This is a transitional period. The "flu season" in the southern hemisphere is just ending. And it hasn't begun in the northern hemisphere. This normally a lull in influenza cases, regardless of the strain. People tend to forget that in the southern hemisphere, seasons are reversed.
3) When the "Spanish Flu" in the 1917-1920 flu seasons struck, it hit in waves. The first wave in 1917 was mild and caused only the number of deaths worldwide that the normal seasonal flu would have caused. Then in 1918 it mutated and struck hard killing millions worldwide with high mortality. But few people seem to have noted that it mutated again and went around in 1919 with extremely high mortality and killed millions more. The lucky ones were the ones who got immunity from the first go-around in 1917. After 1919, it went around several more times but as a much less deadly form.
The influenza virus is more deadly now than when it was first known. This is because until the age of jet travel came along, populations moved very slowly around the world. This, coupled with the discontinuous flu seasons in the southern and northern hemispheres helped slow its spread. With the slower spread, deadly strains of influenza had time to mutate into less deadly strains.
It is a surprising fact that we have actually lost ground against the flu in general because vaccines take a long time to incubate. This forces the CDCP/WHO to have to guess at what strain will be going around next time. They have fair to good accuracy, but can only include 4 strains max in a vaccine. It is jet travel that has given the virus a jump over the vaccines.
Every year millions of unused doses of the vaccine are destroyed. This is also true of many other vaccines. They have a fairly short shelf life, even if refrigerated. There is nothing new here.
People who advise against getting flu shots and say that WHO "manufactured" the pandemic or that drug companies were trying to get rich are full of beans. Numbers are numbers and the CDCP determined the sporting standards and health agencies in other countries use those standards to report all medical statistics to WHO. When a certain percentage of the population is reached, it is always declared an epidemic and when enough countries are effected, it then becomes a pandemic.
The drug companies make very little money on any routine vaccines and about half the time would lose money except for government supports from developed countries. This is because vaccines take a long time to incubate and are extremely subject to contamination. In order to keep them even making vaccines, governments guarantee that a drug company will not lose money (though they do not guarantee that they will make a profit). All vaccines have side-effects. The reason why is not well understood. Most countries also have special panels that award compensation people who incur damaging side effects from vaccines. This protects the drug companies so they will accept the risk. (I don't know about other countries, but in this country such awards are generous and use the civil standards of evidence for a panel of judges to decide.)
I think that most people who rail against vaccinations are simply cowardly and afraid of the needle.
The Spanish flu was caused by the inoculations given American troops during the Spanish American war. I agree with Barry, you need to be vaccinated against naiveté, if you are not (which I think you are) working for a drug company.
Thank God...finally a voice of reason over the nutjobs on this board. Thank you Chris for being a voice of reason and logic. I have studied the 1918 outbreak and you are most correct in that it came back with a vengeance. We may very well be looking at a similar situation this year. We, as Americans, should be grateful that we have organizations like the CDC to keep watch over these bugs and assure that treatment and vaccines are ready and available.
Edwin-2Trees - your statement is completely and wholly incorrect. Study of the 1918=1920 pandemic shows it arose from a romte country in Kansas in 1917, and was initially spread by way of the huge Army camps around the United States as the nation mobilized for war.
Chris-749391 did a very good job of summarizing the relevant information. If you, Ediwn, or anyone else wants to know a LOT more about this, then please order a copy of The Great Influenza: The story of the deadliest pandemic in history, John M. Barry. It is an excellent and very readable book.
The WHO actually changed the definition of pandemic so that H1N1 would "fit". How is that for manufacturing a pandemic! What a boon for Novartis, the makers of the H1N1 "vaccine".
Ummm, H1N1 is the same variation of influenza virus that killed more people worldwide in 1918-1920 than the Black Death did in the Middle Ages. WHO was correct in anticipating great danger.
Since you like citations, always a good thing, see The Great Influenza: The story of the deadliest pandemic in history, John M. Barry.
To put this "pandemic" into prospective, The article says;
Some 18,450 people worldwide are confirmed to have died from H1N1 infections, including many pregnant women and young people. But WHO says that it will take at least a year after the pandemic ends to determine the true death toll, which is likely to be much higher. 33,963 died in U.S. alone in car accidents in 2009. Not worldwide, just U.S.
This so called epidemic was a drug lobbyists dream of making billions from us. Have you noticed how often we are "scared" by our government into allowing them to do what they want to do? They created a news blitz telling us there was a shortage of vaccine and could possibly have to vaccinate only certain people to cause people to be fearful that there was a shortage so that everyone would run out and line up, causing a "demand" for more vaccines to be made. That was until the side effects from the shot started to be known, Guillian-Barre syndrome, was listed on the drug insert as a possible side effect along with a list of others, including death. But we were not advised of that, we were told that the vaccine was SAFE. And since the average person getting the shot would not have access to the insert unless you asked to read it, people believed the shots were, perfectly safe. It's all a hoax, a money maker for big Pharma, unfortunately for them, we are waking up and not just being led around by the nose. Personally if I was a person who usually took flu shots, I would be leary of taking them this year. I don't believe they would just cut losses and dump last years doses. They may be out of date this year, but who would know?
Guillian-Barre syndrome can happen from a regular flu shot also, but is very rare and it didn't occur any more frequently to people who received the H1N1 vaccine than it does from any other vaccine. I understand your views, but if you had been one of the unfortunate people who did get the bug, you may have wished you had gotten the vaccine instead. Some people were very sick from this. Also, dying from a flu shot, including the H1N1 shot is even more rare, and it was made in the same way as regular seasonal flu shots by the same labs, so the risk was no different than getting a regular flu shot.
"Never for one moment did I see a single shred of evidence that pharmaceutical interests, as opposed to public health concerns, influenced any decisions or advice provided to WHO by its scientific advisers," she said. "Never did I see a shred of evidence that financial profits for industry, as opposed to epidemiological and virological data, influenced WHO decisions."
lol The pandemic never was so, of course, it is over.
Anything the extension of the U.N. is part of is a joke.

Excellent comments and excellent book....
Is WHO going to pay for all the vacinne that now has to be destroyed because of their manufactured pandemic?
What does the WHO care about the cost of destroying expired vaccine. Of course, it will be paid for by the taxpayers. Dah!!
See post 1.2 above. The pandemic was not "manufactured."
well its over for me! I had it last month and nearly died,in the hospital for 8 days.
nearly died for 8 days?
Edwin-2Trees, I think you've been hangin' around too long in your two trees. It was pretty obvious by the comma in between that Jim 36203 meant he nearly died, and added that he was in the hospital for 8 days as an afterthought!
I would have gone for a separate, complete sentence.

Whether or not it was truly a pandemic, I don't know, but my daughter had it and she was pretty sick!
