Seriously, they need to just take this crap off of the market asap!! Every week they are recalling these bagged salads because of contamination and it makes me afraid to even buy it so what good are they?? There is no convenience in that,I will just buy and wash my own lettuce and hope for the best that I won't end up with diarrhea all night from it.
This has nothing to do with the "third world" and everything to do with poor business practices! This is the same company that was found to be failing to clean their irrigation system, thereby spraying bacteria onto produce that was then packaged and not ever fully cleaned. I stopped purchasing bagged salads, finally, after the last recall two or three months ago, and obviously that was a good decision.
Watching shows like Top Chef have reminded me that it doesn't have to be expensive or time consuming to put together a simple salad or meal on a daily basis, and I actually like cooking! Romaine lettuce lasts for days and is easy to clean on one's own. Add in your other fresh ingredients, and you don't need all those so-called convenience foods that turn out not to be all that convenient at all. Especially when you end up having to throw them away!
You got that right. Seems everything we eat is contaminated in one way or another. Makes me want to grow my own food.
People living in the city or big cities like LA don't have a yard to even grow a plant on. They are dependant on fast-food, junk-food and local supermarkets for their survival.
I'm heading to Iowa in January of next year. I'm leaving LA for good. Too much crime, illegals, corrupt politicians and police officers, taxes are too high, and people are eventually going to be charged for every toilet flush you make in places like CA and Arizona that have serious water drought and rationing going on.
At least I will have a back yard to grow stuff in, and not have to rely on produce from a supermarket, and Iowa gets plenty of rain I hear.
I bought one of these Salad mixes this weekend and I am not lazy. It was for a white water rafting and camping trip for work. I normally like making my own, but this was simple and did not require me bringing a cutting board and a knife.
So consider people buying a mix for something like this before you call everyone lazy!!!
Chunky - good luck getting away from illegals in Iowa (live there myself). Although, I guess it depends what area you go to - Marshalltown is "little Mexico" haha. But yes, Iowa is great for growing things - but your timing is awful - not smart to move in the middle of an Iowa winter.
remove all salad products from the market and create a 6 month moratorium on salad products production.
this "salad products problem" has the potential to affect or otherwise sicken with deadly potential more people than the gulf oil spill.
this company has never been inspected? I thought all "food related companies" had to be periodically inspected.
we can't let the food sector make their own rules and operate "wily nilly" without the safety of all Americans considered.
don't they have any rules?
don't these high paid executives at these companies have a responsibility to the American people.
who do they think they are. why do they think that they can operate outside the law. who is monitoring these people. don't these employees working in these salad products facilities have rules as regulations to follow.
these are probably the same people who are paying politicians to let these mexicans thru the border so that they can get cheap labor.
Even the stuff that isn't contaminated is bad for you with the FDA allowing Monsanto to put Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's) in just about everything we eat.
The government needs to take a good, hard look at the studies done in Europe on GMO's (they won't since the FDA is owned by Monsanto). Europe won't eat our food due to these studies.
Our food supply is horrid for quality and nutrition and it's getting worse, quickly.
Be responsible for what you eat. Do the research on GMO's and please don't buy products that have these frankengenes in them. Your body will thank you for it and you will lose weight in the process.
I could type pages and pages of all the bad things Americans eat due to GMO's, Aspartame and the other chemicals in them. I will quit here.
We ARE growing as much of our vegetables as we can. I gave up on all the pre-packaged stuff a few years ago when so much was recalled. We have a large garden in our yard as well as several containers on our deck. The best lettuce I've had all year was what I grew in the spring and I am planning on planting a second crop when the weather turns cooler. I had a bumper crop of squash that I froze along with peas and green beans for the winter. Next year I plan to try potatos also. I don't use pesticides and only organic fertilizer. If you have some space for a container, try it!
i found a piece of glass in my f.e. salad mix 2 months ago and have yet to hear back from anyone from the company-i saved the piece of glass just in case-but they can recall this? someone's child couldve swallowed it!!! i will never eat f.e. willingly again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I opened and washed a bag of this lettuce and upon putting it in a bowl, I found a large DEAD CRICKET in it!!!! I rarely buy these ready washed items, but when I do I always wash them anyway. I wrote to the company and they never responded! I'll never buy bagged already washed products again!
When I was a young lass.............my mom bought a big bottle of Hunt's ketchup. I was pouring some on my sandwich when a ketchup soaked lubber came out of the bottle. My mom mailed the lubber in a plastic baggie (inside a large envelope) to the company with a letter stating we'd never use their ketchup again. Hunt's mailed a coupon back to my mom for a full size bottle of..........Heinz! Needless to say, I've never been able to buy Hunt's after that.
Sorry, I live in Florida......lubbers are those huge, beautiful grasshoppers that love to eat up the potted plants. They start out looking like little black crickets with a yellow stripe on the side of their bodies. They turn into those huge grasshoppers that are predominantly yellow with a lot of orange and light brown on their wings. They really become a nuisance if you don't keep them under control.
WHY ? why why why ! how can it be that these things happen over and over and over ? these companies charge a fortune for their products yet no one tests them BEFORE people get ill or bacteria is discovered ? no one is watching them and no one is regulating them and this is what happens , it is a disgrace !
once found a dead flying insect in a bag of baby greens before I left the store. needless to say I didn't buy it-and won't buy their products. best to grow your own.
How many times do they have to recall their salad before they know something is wrong. Perhaps they hire ILLEGALS in their plants and we know how clean they are. And the meat packing plants too probably hire them. Don't buy Fresh Express and never buy packaged ground meat.
If you know for a fact that Fresh Express is hiring illegal immigrants, then report the company! The illegal's will be picked up by INS, and the company will be fined. Better yet, why not tell your Congressman to pass comprehensive imigration reform, and come up with viable laws to impose hefty fines or imprisonment for employers who hire and habitually hire illegal imigrants!
Simply. There is no illegal immigrant problem, if there are no employers that hire them!
By the way, Enma. This poster is not "racist" but is bigoted, and extremely ill informed!
It IS racist. Racism- The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others and discrimination or prejudice based on race. He is stereotyping illegals. I agree that they should not be in this country, but they are still human. Calling them dirty, makes you look dirty yourself. If you seem so concerned with your strong opinion, go investigate. Put in a job application while you're at it. How is it their fault that the company they work for has faulty machines? I don't believe this produce is hand washed at the factory. It's the people who supervise and own the company who are at fault for this. Are you going to blame bank tellers for the collapse of financial institutions? Inform yourself before you make RACIST comments.
Assuming a] that illegals (read: Latino illegals, of course) are unsanitary, b] that people who do agro work are all illegals, and c] that only these groups don't wash up is ignorant, knee-jerk racist bs.
I work in foodservice, and have seen no group that has the corner on being ignorant or lazy about washing their hands. (Half the time the towels and/or soap are out in the locker room; don't want to shake hands with the crew that are supposed to replace those but find it unnecessary!)
Dirty company who hires illegals who take a dump, pick their nose or scratch their a$$ and then never wash their hands afterwards. Then they handle YOUR produce..YUM YUM
So, retrogurl. Have you applied for a job at Fresh Express, then been turned down in favor of someone illegal? Of course not. Since you, like most of us, would not want to work in fields picking produce for very little money; but I know it sounds good to say that someone illegal is a bad person, just because you can!
I have worked in restaurant's and seen many American citizen's who were nasty and wouldn't dream of washing their hands after using the rest room, but would have no problem suing a restaurant if they got ill! As I said to someone else. Contact your Congressman and demand comprehensive immigration reform, including a guest worker program for those on the low end of the wage scale, that will allow people to come to this country to work, then go back to their own, rather then risking life and limb to enter this country illegally, only to have to deal with folks like you!
At the rate things are going, you can't trust salad mixes, beef products are being recalled, frozen foods contain bugs and things fruit has harmful pesticides, and other products that may contain some harmful item to humans, does that mean we can only drink coffee or juice at this point??
I've been buying this company's salad greens. This makes me want to throw them out. I sure miss the good ole days. My parents grew all our own veggies and meats. We seldom ever bought veggies and meats from the grocery store. We even got our milk from family friends who owned the dairy down the road. It's so scary to eat anymore!
I have been raising a garden for most of my adult life and off seasons you still have to buy from the stores if you want fresh. I remember that my mother would never allow tuna in our house because there was so many recalls in the early 60's. I never tasted tuna until I was an adult. This is not a new thing by far.
@pats: Amen to that. Ever read Sinclair's The Jungle? It helped bring the FDA into being. Of course, FDA and USDA have been in bed with big pharma and big food for years. *sigh*
This really bothers me that it can happen. Also the fact the FDA can approve drugs for us and then later tells they may not be good. However, when someone comes up with some alternative health cures they are shot down if not shut down. I'm not saying they are all okay and the warnings are appreciated but do we get all the facts why they are not approved or is it who you are or who you know and who pockets are getting lined.
I never purchase pre-packed ready-to-eat produce because I don't believe testing / sanitation standards are adequate. I much rather take the extra time to buy whole produce which I then wash and prepare to my own standards. It takes time but I feel safer and generally save money this way too.
Why not submit some of your homegrown veggies to an accredited food testing lab to see what looms on the stalks and leaves of the food that you choose to eat? Vegetables are grown in soil, which is loaded with all sorts of bacteria. There is no way that you can sterilize raw veggies (short of irradaiation, which consumers reject overwhelmingly) other than by cooking. Be glad that this random sample popped a positive, so that the company can investigate the source of the contamination and pull the potentially contaminated items from store shelves. Instead of whining, you should be glad you live in a country that has controls in place for this process to occur. Do you think that this contamination would all been detected in 3rd world countries?
I was thinking the same thing.... And gee, I wonder how many of you people that grow vegetables at home have pets. Or have neighbors who have pets. Or heck, stray animals wandering around. I'm sure NONE of them use your garden as their toilet.
At least the bacteria isn't put in a bag to fester and grow. We are in America "not" a 3rd world country as far as I know. This type of contaminated food should never have been on shelves to begin with. These packaged goods have been crap for years and still it is being allowed to be sold.
Personally, I've abandoned "Fresh" Express mixes because they always go bad quickly in the 'fridge. Before this story I thought that perhaps this is a problem unique to Chicago's NW 'burbs where I live, but I've seen this problem from multiple supermarkets. I've even found lettuce to be rusting badly when examining the bags on the shelf. This is all before the marked freshness dates on the bags. I've switched to buying hearts of romaine lettuce and cutting it up myself. The romaine keeps for several days in the same drawer in the same 'fridge where Fresh Express quickly goes bad.
I've had the same experiences with this brand. Seems as soon as I open the bag, everything turns to slime. I quit buying this product a few years ago because of this.
Now I go to SeedSavers, Seeds of Change, etc, and we grow most of our own heirloom, un- (genetically) modified produce. We built a cold frame, and have fresh spinach as early as February, and as late as November. Yes, it's true that it all comes from dirt, and dirt is welll....dirty, but my hands planted it, cared for it and my hands harvested it, and prepared it. Nothing tastes as good as a ripe, sunwarmed Brandywine tomatoe plucked fresh from the vine.
Salad greens are an easy crop to grow if you have a wee bit of earth, as are tomatoes, and can easily be grown in containers for those with limited space. The best way to protest products that are inferior is to quit buying them.
Not feasable?Try to find a local farmers market, and buy from them. If you have a relative or a friend close by that has some dirt...offer to till and plant produce that they can share.
I find it disgusting that the people who have posted about glass, and other foreign objects found in their food have not gotten a response from this company. All the more reason to boycott this product.
The bigger issue, should be why is public only hearing about it two days after the food product was expired; meaning it was either consumed or thrown out already due to reaching the expiration date.
The truth is that natural organic fertilizer is made from waste. Human and animal waste is processed and sprayed on the crops. Wake up people organic is just that and we have to be prepared to prepare our food. We must use some common sense like washing, draining and cooking properly. Living off the land requires that we think and take care of ourselves not let someone else do it.
I agree, workers who take a dump, scratch their asses, pick their noses etc are picking and processing our veggies....legal or illegal, is not the issue...someone needs to monitor the entire operation...assume nothing....
Why? Because it's about the almighty dollar. Food Corporations pouring millions of dollars into Washington D.C. to gain less stringent regulations from the FDA and penalties that equate to a slap on the wrist.
The only thing about a consumer that matters to the money making food industry is how much they pay at the grocery store. Not their health. Not their safety.
You should watch the documentary Food Inc. It's a total eye opener.
True story. I work on a military base In Savannah, Ga. The grounds people are contract employees. Lowest bidder. Well military police stopped one of the grounds people for speeding in the company truck and found that this person was an illegal. They called immigrations and was told that they did not have anyone available to pick the person up so just get their name and escort them off the base. Sweet huh? You just have to laugh.

Wow, people have become so lazy in America they can't even make their own salads now.
Lettuce, Carrots, Onions, Bell Peppers, Cucumbers, Cabbage and a knife...
How laboring it must be to make a salad!
People living in the city or big cities like LA don't have a yard to even grow a plant on. They are dependant on fast-food, junk-food and local supermarkets for their survival.

Good health to everyone and get informed.
With an expiration date of Aug. 10, why is this information just being released?
What ever happened to a little thing called quality control?
It went by the way side when share holder profit became the leading force for corporations.
Say. I wonder how much the CEO of this company makes, and if the recalls are costing me any bonuses?
We ARE growing as much of our vegetables as we can. I gave up on all the pre-packaged stuff a few years ago when so much was recalled.
