This is a very expensive drug but it has been proven to produce great responses in many types of cancer. Interesting that it is the one that one of the FDA advisory committees wants to quit using in breast cancer. It has side effects but produces responses in breast cancer, colon cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer. Could the advisory committee be doing the same thing that they did with mammograms in women under age 50? 25% of women with breast cancer are below the age of 50. I wonder if the government will not tell cancer experts what to do with Avastin in lung cancer patients as well.
This is a very effective drug in lung cancer. It is also an effective drug in breast cancer, ovarian cancer and colon cancer. Interesting that it is a drug that the FDA advisory committee decided to recommend NOT be approved in treating metastatic breast cancer. It is effective but expensive and side effects include hypertension and hemorrhage. Even so, it should not be taken away from patients who have breast cancer when it is proven to be effective.
I wonder if the FDA will find some reason not to allow it to be used in other cancers as well as breast cancer. After all, the advisory committee already recommended that women under 50 not have yearly mammograms, even though 25% of all patients diagnosed with breast cancer are under 50. There are a lot of elected and appointed officials in the government that seem to want to practice medicine at the expense of the voters.
