I am shocked, stunned, and frankly amazed. I thought being obese would lead to a decrease in pregnancy, but I guess there's lots of chubby chasers out there. Better them than me. No thanks.
doctor jim's comment may be insensitive but it is not bigotry nor is it "narrow minded." bigotry or narrow-mindedness refer to the intolerance of religion, race, ethnicity, nationality or sexual orientation.
his preference for healthy, well-shaped women is just as acceptable as anyone's preference for blond, brunette, white or petite women. how many of you women would be willing to marry a 3 feet tall Little man?
just because someone doesn't find you attractive doesn't mean they are automatically shallow or a bigot.
Actually, as a former obese person who is the way down, I find I have to side with markl323 against RN2003 & Nanamouse. While doctor jim 59's personal preference regarding how a potential partner looks may not have been stated in the most sensitive manner, it is simply a preference and not "narrow minded" or "bigotry".
A person's preference for how their partner looks is simply that - a preference and his preference simply doesn't include people who are overweight.
You hypocrites. If i say not wanting a black woman is my personal preference you would call that racists. You people want it all your way. You're just as intolerant.
This article gave no information as to WHY this would be a factor. I mean i could assume possible reasons , but none were mentioned . Am I missing something?
Doctor Jim59, frankly, your bigotry is just as unattractive to many of us as fat is to you. Big women everywhere are relieved that you are not interested...
Obese or not, I wonder why there has been such an increase in C-sections? I know for a while they had recommended that women who had them with the first birth have them with future births, but are more women choosing to have C-sectiosn overall? Or are doctors/hospitals recommending them more?
In the 1980's and 1990's research showed that women of shorter stature were significantly more likely to have/need C-sections. Presumably this was due to larger babies than the mother's body could deliver risk-free.
Back then, the medical establishment also encouraged V-back deliveries (vaginal deliveries for subsequent pregnancies after a previous C-section) but this seems to no longer be the case. The risk of uterine rupture - is now seen as more serious than the risks due to surgery.
MsKat, Docs like to do c-sections because they have more control and there is less chance of something going wrong during the birth, thus less chance that they will get sued. Obstetricians have amongh the highest malpractice insurance rates.
Michele Obama is in the forefront of this "battle" to defeat obesity. What does she know about it? She's never been overweight. Is her secret Jenny Craig? It's ridiculous! The reason that the "war" on obesity is being lost is because dieting and exercise do not work! Let's say this idea was a 20th century 'run it into the ground' phenomenon. Let's enter the 21st century and find out what is different about an obese person's body versus a slim person's body and the ability to accumulate fat. As a matter of fact, when I was a kid I was the opposite and I didn't have to diet to get that. So, therefore, I've been on both sides of this fence so I can't be fooled by anyone.
Actually, diet and exercise do work for most people. It means cutting out all the junk and processed mystery food in your current diet, not depriving yourself. Your metabolism slows with age, so that's no big surprise, and you probably don't run around like you did as a kid. Common sense, not Jenny Craig. So, stop trying to blame your weight gain on some mysterious difference between thin people and those not so thin. With the exception of the small percent of the population who have a real medication condition, the rest of society brought this on themselves and their kids. I'm thin, but I have to work much harder to maintain that now, than I did when I was 17 or even 27!
Red Wolf: I agree with most of what you say. I, too, believe that obesity is often more complicated than just diet and exercise.
But I gotta defend Michelle Obama. When she first spoke out about her concerns with childhood obesity, she said it was because the girls' pediatrician noted that their BMI was getting a little too high, which had never occurred to her. Also, she's leading the battle by emphasizing positives, like education about healthy eating and exercise - not by berating the overweight, like so many on the thin side of the line.
Although some bodies are more efficient metabolically, there is still no getting around the fact that when calories in exceed calories used, the body gains weight. When the oposite is true, the body loses weight.
That's physics, and there's just no getting around it.
If you want to lose weight, you must cut down on caloric intake, increase caloric usage, or both. (Diet and exercise....)
Why does it matter that Michelle Obama has never been fat (do you even know this for a fact?)? You don't need to have battled obesity to help other people battle it. A car mechanic who's never had a breakdown can still be a car mechanic, and a cancer researcher doesn't need to have had cancer to understand the disease. Every First Lady has a pet project, and this is hers. She's trying to make our nation's children healthy; what's wrong with that?
Diet and exercise DO work. I'm in my 30s, and while I can't eat the junk I ate when I was 20 (and why would I want to?), I'm fitter and healthier than I was when I was 20, even with my metabolism slowing. While a select few CAN be heavy and healthy, and while a very small percentage of the population who have thyroid disease, for most of the U.S. it's a consequence of being sedentary and eating processed junk food instead of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Another problem is most common people can't afford to eat fresh meats, fruits and vegetables everyday. Therefore they are forced to buy and consume the canned garbage that the fda allows to be sold to them.
Fresh fruit and vegetables are very cheap at the local farmer's market just now, but in urban areas, there are no farmers markets. In Detroit, there are no grocery stores, period, residents have to leave the city limits to buy any kind of food. There is a fruit and veggie mobile (like the old bookmobiles) that makes the rounds in Detroit. It's like an ice cream truck except they offer fresh produce for sale to people who would otherwise have no access to healthy foods.
Canned stuff doesn't even look or taste like the real foods, it has too much added salt and sugar.
there are such things as canned fruit and vegetables.
people that are obese are just lazy, wont make their own meals, always get supersize meals or super big gulps. they cant eat a normal portion and like my brother in law, he would eat 2 and 3 weight watcher meals at a time.
and just because it says fat free, doesnt mean it will not make you gain weight. actually fat free will make you gain weight.
fusseltier: I think I know your secret to staying thin. You get a lot of exercise flapping your jaw and burning up the keyboard about things you obviously know nothing about. I suggest you limit your observations about fat people to your brother-in-law instead of making insulting assumptions about all of the obese.
However, items like beans (canned or dried), rice, lentils, flour, sugar, eggs, etc. are all very affordable and can be the basis of a nutritious diet - but they require a lot of preparation.
Planning, time and energy have to go into creating nutirtious meals on a shoestring. Unfortunately, this seems to be a lost art.
60 yr old male. all low fat: moderate breakfast, small lunch, moderate supper, nice dessert. NO between meal snacks, i see hunger pangs as a guarantee i enjoy the heck of my next meal. when i eat out 2 or 3 times a week (of all 21 meals all week) i eat what ever i want. all other meals home cooked, minimal processed foods.
bicycle 1hr, 12+ mph 3 times weekly.
160#, bmi = 21.1
i never diet, but do cut back on occasion if i put on 2 or 3 pounds. have done this for the last 20 years and never weighed more than 172. i could easily put on 20-30# if i stopped caring.
discipline, pure and simple.
the human organism hasn't changed in the last 200 years. our diets, caloric intake and activity are the only real variables. 99% of the other offered reasons for obesity are wishful thinking.
We are not meant to come home, sit on the couch and stuff our faces with hotpockets while watching hours of television. You have to exercise and eat unprocessed foods. You have to drink lots of water and eat a lot of fiber. You can't let big gulps and diet cokes replace water. When I go to walmart, its like going to a circus freak show....obese people with their obese children everywhere you look, double wide scooters for people who are to fat to walk...it is so sad. They all have carts full of crap....case of pepsi and other assorted garbage. America is doomed.
America has officially gone down the hole. All these fat @#$%'s are making us look like a lazy, stupid , and ignorant nation. And its the truth, most people know something is bad for them yet they eat it anyway. It's just like smoking or doing other hard drugs, you get addicted, dont care, and are killing yourself in the longrun. I saywe should cut off all bad food from the market and sent theses fat creatures to fat camp to learn what its like to be a human being and not a monster like Jaba the Hut. End rant.
I could believe what I saw this week. I've never seen so many people on electric carts and using walkers and a majority of them were over weight. I see why health care cost have sky rocketed. The number of people over weight is staggering. I hope ADA doesn't change the requirement for how wide a sidewalk is to be. There just isn't enough room for those electric carts and people walking on a sidewalk. I hope there are rules regarding walkers, they are beginning to become a nuisance, people place them in the way of others, force their way through using their walkers and some actually will run over your foot. People, you won't need these electric carts or walkers if you lose weight. When you lose weight, you will feel better, less pain and you won't need those carts and walkers any longer. People you lose weight by exercise and diet, thats it, for those who don't believe in that, try again, your quiting too early. Dieting and exercise is something you just keep doing no matter what, if you don't lose weight, don't worry about , keep exercising you will do your body good.
I am half of what I was 10 years ago. I eat a healthy diet. Hit the produce section in the grocery store first and yes, I am on a budget. I have a disabling joint disease, however, I walk and ride a bicycle, work out at the gym and take yoga classes. I will never, never go back to the obesity game again. I got my life back. I work in healthcare and sadly, obese patients are unwilling to comply with care. I hear obese people make excuse after excuse. STOP! Suck it up. If you don't lose the weight you will lose your life. Really!
I am shocked, stunned, and frankly amazed. I thought being obese would lead to a decrease in pregnancy, but I guess there's lots of chubby chasers out there. Better them than me. No thanks.
All I can say to this comment is "narrow minded" these are the kind of comments you could keep to yourself.
doctor jim's comment may be insensitive but it is not bigotry nor is it "narrow minded." bigotry or narrow-mindedness refer to the intolerance of religion, race, ethnicity, nationality or sexual orientation.

Actually, doctor jim is correct.
Obesity does decrease fertility and increase risk of complications in delivery.
That's a medical statement, not a preference.
This article gave no information as to WHY this would be a factor. I mean i could assume possible reasons , but none were mentioned . Am I missing something?
They actually don't know.
"Exactly how obesity contributes to cesarean risk still has not been well addressed"

Its actually surprising that two obese people can make things work well enough to make the connection.
MsKat, Docs like to do c-sections because they have more control and there is less chance of something going wrong during the birth, thus less chance that they will get sued. Obstetricians have amongh the highest malpractice insurance rates.
How do they know the obesity rate is up when no one has health insurance. I sure haven't been weighed in a Dr's office in about 8 years.

looks like its time for the US to raise the weight limit minimum for being obese to cut down the percentage of obese people.
