There's a big difference between "mamey" fruit, and "zapote". The mamey flesh is dark orangeish pink in color, almost the color of salmon flesh. The zapote fruit has softer green skin, and its flesh is black. In the picture on the article, it seems more like mamey, with the pink flesh.
no no no mamey is right but a zapote is fruit in spanish spaniards used zapote to classify fruit so the zapote you talking about is black zapote but there is green zapote mamey zapote and a few other kinds lol sthe spaniards werent very original because zapote meens fruit (:
remove all fruit from the market and create a 6 month moratorium on fruit production.
this "fruit problem" has the potential to affect or otherwise sicken with deadly potential more people than the gulf oil spill.
this company has never been inspected? I thought all "food related companies" had to be periodically inspected.
we can't let the food sector make their own rules and operate "willy nilly" without the safety of all Americans considered.
don't they have any rules?
don't these high paid executives at these companies have a responsibility to the American people.
who do they think they are. why do they think that they can operate outside the law. who is monitoring these people. don't these employees working in these fruit facilities have rules as regulations to follow.
these are probably the same people who are paying politicians to let these mexicans thru the border so that they can get cheap labor.
definitely not a zapote, but a mamey or better known in english as a Quince, perhaps mamey was the fruit that Eve used to tempt Adam instead of the universally known apple. I am very familiar with these 2 fruits, but perhaps just pehaps in central america is known as zapote.
If you pay attn. They said South America... not home grown here. Which really doesn't matter anyway. Just because it is home grown doesn't mean it is safe either. You can never tell how people are going to handle food etc... There are MANY nasty bugs "germs" that are spread by feces! Ok you say you don't go around eating poop so you should be safe? NO... people don't always wash their hands after they use the toilet! If they do they don't always wash hands properly... Every time you grab a bathroom door you risk picking up a nasty germ. Here is a real idea to try to process..... who sais Pedro didn't decide to take a hike or squat by or on that fruit or veggie?
Pretty sure they wash / spray them down before they peal and mash them before freezing them for shipment. Let's not get into the BUG / FECES thing here because there are plenty of facts out there that show that because of our GERM-A-PHOB society constantly worrying / washing / and taking antibotics we have become more suseptable to germs and they are growing more resistant. Same can be said with allergies.
Hey Mr. I am a nurse and I study statistics and teach hand washing etc... Hand hygiene is one of the primary methods used to reduce the fecal-oral transmission of infectious agents. However, conflicting hand hygiene recommendations for different settings are causing confusion among the general public as to what is the best practice to follow or what products should be used for daily handwashing and hand hygiene. The cause of the spread of infection in the first place is the failure of ppl to wash their hands. I dare you to Challenge this... Just because you don't get sick.. doesn't mean the person you spread the germ to wont. Other germs may spread when people wipe the nose, sneeze into the hand cough on the hand etc.. then grab the door... thus when you grab the door you have the germ....if you rub your eye, touch your mouth, have a sore and touch that... guess what ... you have invited that germ in! Now if your immune system is strong enough you may not get that germ... however you may spread it to someone else that has been on chemo or drugs to supress the immune system.
THE CREATION OF THE SUPERBUG!
Mrs gotta Have a pill went to the doc and although she only had the common cold the doc gives her antibiotics as he has always done to shut her up. She also eats meat from Billy bob farmer giving his chickens, cows and pigs antibiotics, . Mrs gotta have a pill gets sick from bacteria and gets antibiotics again but they are not working for her as well so they treat her a little longer.
Mr pill has also had the same pattern as Mrs pill.... He has now picked up the germ from her and didn't finish his abx in a short time Mr Better gets sick again and decides to treat himself with the abx he has left but he is still feeling bad. He has other abx stashed so he takes those too. Well the cycle goes on and is spreading to others with the same habits and there you have another germ resistant to Certain abx.
Read the article again and Read about the germ they are talking about! Also go to the cdc or who and read REAL LIVE information from the REAL authorities on superbugs... there may be areas and education for the public on handwashing as well but I am not sure.... I only go there to study superbugs... current threats and new information.
CDC.gov is the Centers for Disease Control... and WHO is the World Health Organization.
You should really correct your article's mention of zapote. I grew up eating both and loving both, mamey and zapote, and I can tell you with absolute certainty that the two are TOTALLY different fruits. Not even close in looks or taste. Zapotes are black and soft with green thin skin.
I concur with you, the first thing that struck me about the article was the misinformation that was printed concerning these two tropical fruits; zapote and mamey are totally different fruits. I am always amazed at how much misinformation is printed and is never fully corroborated by the editors anymore especially when the information that is being printed deals with information concerning different cultures. We need to be a tad more careful about the information and the accuracy of the information that we print out in the media.
The picture correctly depicts the Mamey sapote which belongs to the family Sapotaceae sapotes and the Black sapote belongs to the family Ebenaceae sapotes. So even if they are not known to us as sapotes, they are botanically named as such and that's probably why the writer of the article called them this way.
Mr. Shut Up and Sit Down... I respectfully disagree with you. I quote:
"Mamey is a sweet, reddish tropical fruit grown mainly in Central and South America. It
is also known as zapote or sapote."
The premise of the argument of the article as quoted, is in error, therefore the article is erred (wrong). The mamey and the zapote are two different fruits, this article attempts to treat these two fruits as one in this article and reach the same conclusion literally by confusing the two as one. This is an anaylsis of logic known as the fruit of the poisioned tree; meaning that if the the initial information is established as an absolute, and the theory of the argument continues based on that information, the conclusion is mandatorily incorrect because the premise which is treated as an absolute concept is incorrect. Hence, the fruit of the poisioned tree essentially means that if you poision your tree (roots) and the tree grows (the argument) the fruit is contaminated by it's very nature (the conclusion).
Yeah like us Americans are any better ever pay attention to how many do not wash there hands. When leaving a public restroom. ALL RACES here. Seriously just think how sanitary the Jamba juice minimum wage worker is.
The real problem is we are to pansy here like bubble boy. And to think with all the keep them all out Arizona freaks. Agriculture here is going Bye bye. Not to mention cities taking over all the water Farmers need to grow crops here in the USA.
Fear tactic article is all this is. Better hope the south Americans don't start selling USA Americans smallpox blankets. Heck that's how we almost wiped out my folk. Dam European dirty plague having foreigners. (sarcasm)
Fruit might be contaminated by poor hand washing, but feces does not have to be human in nature. Fruit can be contaminated when irrigated with contaminated water, or when dropped to the ground where it may in contact with animal feces. Contamination can also happen after the harvest.
Roflmao Joey... but yea... can be animal, field rat etc... and I agree.... all races don't always wash the hands.... Usually the CNA's help the patients... but I have been known to grab enough hand sanitizer when I go in a patients room to give them a dab. We have been at KFC in Barstow and one of the workers left the ladies room to the kitchen and NEVER washed her hands... we had not ordered yet and so we just made a comment about it and left.... I sent a email to KFC corporate!
did you ever think or just stop to think that when we try to bering up the illegal mexicans that work in the fields to pick fruit or vegatable that we get an outbreak of a new disease// did you know that they dump fesces and urine into the picked fruit and vegatables/ the lettuce outbreak are picked by the illegal mexicans in the field and also run the farms and proccess centers and package the goods // how many re-calls have we had the past 3 years// everytime we try to control the illegal traffic into the u.s. we get an outbreak from the food supply fresh supply// think about it// not because we do not wash our hands because they pee and @!$%# on the items they pick to get back at us// they are sneaky just like they come over the border
Agricultural labor in the U.S. has actually been dramatically negatively affected by the current restrictions on migrant workers. Farmers cannot find willing U.S. citizens to work their fields, it is a big issue for the farming industry and has caused increased costs for food items. Migrant workers are not the cause of Typhoid outbreaks in the U.S. This particular fruit was imported from South America. This issue has NOTHING to do with immigration. Additionally, please note that Typhoid is spread only through fecal contaminated food or water, specifically from human feces. This is a VERY serious, life threatening disease, there is such a thing as Typhoid Fever - high fever is one of the very dangerous aspects of the disease, along with dehydration. In order for fruit to be so heavily contaminated it must have been irrigated with water that contained the bacteria. Water ladened with bacteria is not uncommon in developing nations. Again, this is just a super unfortunate situation and I hope everyone afflicted recovers quickly.
When crops are harvested from a farm the goods are sent all over locally and internationally to the highest bidder...which only the owner of the farm knows...The workers that pick the crops would have no idea they were going to the US
We need to go back to small family owned farms as in Europe. Not only is the food fresher and more nutrious, but also would help our obesity problem. Most of te food we eat has lost it's nutrition so we eat more because our bodies need more. Instead we are getting empty callories.
Okay listen up: Here's the poop (no pun intended) on foods grown in Mexico or South America. I attended a lecture from an infectious disease doctor. He stated that he avoids buying fruits or veggies from Mexico or South America. Why? Because they irrigate and spray with contaminated water!!! Am I shocked that this fruit came from South America and was contaminated by typhoid? No! Typhoid usually arises as a water borne illness, spread by contamination of water with feces.
Now, I am not saying that growing and buying American will solve the problem 100%..but, I too avoid buying produce that is not produced here in the states. I also have a vegetable garden and get a lot of my veggies from there. I don't fertilize with animal waste and I don't use pesticides either. We just had another article posted recently about people getting sick from guacamole because of contaminated tomatoes used in the mixture or contaminated cilantro.
The phrase "they irrigate and spray with contaminated water" is bias and prejudiced, "they" is a very broad term, and not knowing the size, procedures and types of different farms and agricultural practices in South America demonstrate ignorance from whoever makes those remarks. Some farmers using gray water doesn'tmean all farmers are using that kind of irrigation, all depends of country, region, and type of farming process. Even if considering Brazil, is so big that it would be unfair and bias to cover all farmers there with just one category. You better learn more about the size and geography of "South America" before making light judgements.
Ok fran.... you go there and drink the water.... I am not that brave...lol. This is Really a neat topic...
There is truth to alot that has been said here. There are many theories and any of them can be the case. I have to say the water they use to spray or irrigate with would be something that should be looked into. Some very interesting ideas have been posted and any could be possible but I like the irrigation theory!
When I was a kid in the 40's I remember getting a lot of vax for Typhoid Fever. They were the worst and most painful of all the vax you had to take to go to school/camp (now I know that is because of the Salmonella endotoxin). Your arm was aching all night long, and I think you had to take three of them a week or so apart. One time the kid up the street and I got ours on the same day. His dad was a drunk and loved to chase us down the street with a butcher knife yelling "I'm goona scalp me a couple of Indians". He was just kidding be we didn't know that. So here we are running down the street from him and holding our sore arms because it hurt with each step and squeeling "ouch ouch ouch" all the way home.
I'm glade that Dr.Barzilay observed the victims being treated with an antibiotic, which cured them of the outbreak and not loos their life over a contaminated fruit!
Have you ever eaten a Dutch tomato. they look great all havig the same size and shape. The only problem is the box they come in probably has more flavor.
Nothing like a good PULP FRICTION article to start the day. Next time I seek solace over an illness I think it'll be safer to seek out Pappy instead of Mamey. (Attn Spell-Nazis: The 'R' in the 6th word of this posting was intentional)
Mamey and zapote are two totally different types of fruit - the mamey has a thicker tan-ish skin with a pit inside - the fruit is similar in shape and texture to an avocado - the pulp is a salmon color, a zapote has thin greenish, blackish skin - more round in shape and the fruit inside is - black with several pithy stones inside - commonly served mashed up with orange juice on it.
Mamey is not the same as Zapote. Are two different fruits. Fruit might be contaminated by poor hand washing, or inadequate handling and storage. However, in my early days, I ate both fruits and never got sick from eating them. It is recommended to wash those fruits at home, before peeling and serving. The CDC is the reason why many of the diseases that plagued human kind no longer exist in the US. If they tell you not to eat something don't do it. If they tell you to get vaccinated get-vaccinated. They're very smart people trying to keep some very dangerous antigens away from the public. It's much cheaper to steer clear of some mamey versus paying for hospitalization costs.
Thanks CDC, great job with getting the word out. But it never seems to reach everyone who has the need to be informed. Such is life on earth, not a perfect world. Been to Central America back in 1976-77, ate everything the native population ate, drank the water and lots of rum. Never got sick, didn't have one illness in 13 months of travel and didn't get any prior injection protection from my doctor. I did get a bunch of protection for my dog who traveled with me. When I came back to Calif, I returned to a small town of Delhi just south of Turlock on Hwy 99. The first weekend back I went swimming in the Merced River, and contacted something that made me ill. This water was being used for Peach, Almonds, Corn, Wine Grape, and everyone home garden who lived on the river. Tens of thousands of people were sick, many died, and it was covered up best they could saying it was the flu and hot summer heat killing folks. I had Kaiser medical coverage in Oakland and they said I had typhoid fever. When I told them where I was working, their reaction was California Central Valley farm lands were the nastiest filthy health conditions in North America starting in late 1920 early 30's. And we seem to think that because we buy fruit from south of the boarder is a bad thing. NOT THE CASE, that is folk loar...
ummm the name of the fruit is actually mame sapote, i dont know if i spelled it right, but you say them together, sapote just means fruit, i live in hawaii and eat this kinda good fruit once and awhile but it is calle mame sapote because if you just called it sapote then you would be calling it "fruit" in spanish i think

It saddens me to know people as ignorant as yourself exist. You should be ashamed of yourself.
Wow. Paranoid much? They have medications for that.
Just because their paranoid Doesn't mean its not TRUE!

YOU IDIOTS !!!! There is no such thing as "TYPHOID FEVER"
Do the research before you open your mouth dumbass.
Margaret Rendon, you need to look up Typhoid Mary on the internet and don't forget to check out the Mayo Clinic .
Uhm... The Mayo clinic disagrees with you... http://www.bing.com/health/article/mayo-126232/Typhoid-fever?q=typhoid+fever&qpvt=typhoid+fever

We shouldn't worry so much about these outbrakes,,,, Just keep washing your hands more offten.
So if you're rich you can shop at a store like Whole Foods and be healthy.
