A true tragedy. Just a terrible, terrible outcome especially as the deceased Brother had such a young family.
But I'll bet the problem is an infection picked up in the Operating Room. Post operative infections are not rare and becoming even more difficult to treat due to the emergence of resistant strains of bacteria that is commonly found in the OR. ANY procedure, let alone one as invasive as this, is risky and not to be taken lightly. Same goes for any admission to a hospital.
No matter how noble and at what benefit, the surviving brother will have to deal with survivors guilt for the rest of his life. I hope that he and his family recognize the mental anguish that could hinder his physical recovery and find him the assistance he needs as soon as possible. Most of us would sacrifice for family, but we need to understand that the repurcussions to the family is heartbreaking. I, along with so many others, hope this family finds comfort, with the outside help, in the memories and positive actions of one brother for another.
I hope the love that existed for one brother to another will still be cherished. That love created a beautiful gift of selflessness that is so rare in our world. My heart breaks at the loss and for the family of young children now left without a father. Somehow though I know they will be loved and cherished for they exist within a place of great light and kindness. To feel guilt will only withhold the full benefit of a brother's love and gift.
For those of us who never had a family that was loving and did instead whatever they could think of to be hurtful, cruel and selfish, the love shown is but an unknown entity. I pray that gift of love be strong now and heal and life be filled with promise and joy.
CNN had a video story about this. What a loving family and what a tragedy.
Both brothers were interviewed before the story. Ryan had no reservations about doing this for his brother. And Chad was interviewed after Ryan died. His grief is absolutely devestating. Hard harded Hannah that I am actually teared up.
Ryan, may flights of angels sing you to your rest.
Yes, what a selfless act. God bless this family. My husband is also waiting for a liver transplant, praying there will be a donor. The Doc's ask us about the living donor, as a choice, but unfortunately there is no one in his family that would be eligible.
A noble act, a sacrifice that will never be forgotten. Brother dying for brother...it's sad to say, but that's a scenario that is the exception, not the rule. May their family find peace in each other.
Such selflessness! My sympathies to his young family and my congratulations to his parents for raising such a fine young man. "Greater love hath no man..." The recipient is going to have a hell of a time facing the family of his brother after this. I think I'd rather be dead than in his shoes right now. I hope he makes his brother's sacrifice on his behalf worth it
It seems that the old saying-'No good deed goes unpunished." is still too true all too often.
This is simply awful. I do not think someone in his position should have volunteered to do this and taken that risk. His brother lives, but think about the guilt and how his wife and children were hurt by the risk he took. I think many years from now this will still be a bruise in that family.
What a selfish, cowardly comment. Obviously, you lack the courage and depth of sacrifice required for this act of brotherly love. I hope you are not listed as an organ donor for your heart is lifeless. Tera, you are "simply awful".
I would give my live to save the life of my family members also! This man is the perfect example of how GOD would want all people to be! I'm sure his brother will live his life to the fullest in honor of what a unbelievably, loving brother his was.
May God give this family solace and the peace that surpasses all understanding. I know these two brothers will be united someday again. For now may God watch over his children, wife and loved ones. What a great thing to sacrifice for his brother. I have five sisters and I would do the same for any one of them in the hope that they could live. God is still in this world, Praise God. :)
His selfless gift will be an inspiration for many, especially his children. Hope his wife and children and the rest of his family find peace. May his brother heal quickly and live life fully to honor his love of life. Such a tragedy.
I don't usually respond to stories I read but I heard about this one on CNN and think that the problem was that they said they removed 60% percent of this generous man's liver. 60%! Then they said that if they remove too much the donor could die! I would say 60% was too much! Our family is praying for this family this is a very beautiful story with a very sad ending. God Bless them.
Surgical wards, hospitals, ICUs are rift with bacteria. I warrant there is an infection to blame or an error in the actual surgery. You may never know the real cause. Hospitals, health care professionals are not, I repeat ARE NOT required to report glitches.
I'm sure he understood the risks before he submitted to the surgery. Cutting a hunk of liver out of someone , even when in good health, isn't exactly the safest surgery around. The risk of death is certainly out there.
Add to the fact they may have been a bit 'greedy' in the harvest, well...good change you won't be around too long.
Dooney..that's an obnoxious thought you could have spared us all.
kdvaldes: it's what anyone with a modicum of ethics and love for his brother would do. if god had much interest in it, i imagine the guy would be alive right now. i just love how, as an example of god's attention to these matters, the air france crash in the south atlantic was part of 'god's plan' but the water landing of the USAir plane in the Hudson River was how god was watching over them all. I suppose god doesn't like the French? i can't imagine that god is a marionette operator with strings attached to each of us which he pulls or releases to watch us dance.
4 deaths in liver transplants vs a few hundred successes aren't great odds, but I'd take them if I needed to. I'd go under the knife for my brother or sister in a heartbeat. My ex-boss just survived liver donor surgery a few months ago as did his brother. Was god on their side but not on ryan's?
Everyone who's saying God bless needs to realize that YOUR heartfelt blessings are enough. And no amount of 'angels singing (anyone) to (their) rest' will comfort someone who has no foundation in what you're talking about. Be original in your lamentations, and think "What if they're atheists?" It's not just the holy that are good and righteous in this world. BUT, you are all tremendous people who obviously care deeply (not denying that) - just food for thought.
may god bless this wonderfull family, my sympathy to the family. as a living live donor recipent and then cadaver liver transplant recipent, i will pray for this very strong family. may they find comfort, peace, and strength to over come this time in life. god has a plan for us . chad, your brother was your angel. god will take care of him! your plan is ahead of you, congratulations on your new lease on life! may god bless you and your entire family!
What a sad end to this selfless act. May God Bless the family.

Godspeed...

Thank you for your prayers. Pray, changes everything.
May God comfort the family in their loss and grief, knowing that there is no greater love than to lay down one's life for a brother (friend.)

Any thing posted here would just be total conjecture on any ones part.
Could have been any number of reasons. I can think of four or five reasons, that would statistically be more probable than an infection.
This man lost his life, giving to others selflessly. That my friend, is the true mark of a hero.
My thoughts go out to his family.
Amen

John 15:13
"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his brother."
A truly selfless act. May God bless this family.
Amen!

Who was the surgeon? I hope that he didn't get his degree from the Mumbai medical school of destruction.
A completely baseless and ignorant post! You, sir, should be ashamed!
pretty thoughtless thing to post on this dan. may his family be blessed.
That is a pretty harsh comment. God had his reasons. Although some of us humans can't understand his will.
I would give my live to save the life of my family members also! This man is the perfect example of how GOD would want all people to be! I'm sure his brother will live his life to the fullest in honor of what a unbelievably, loving brother his was.
He's a hero in my book!
May God give this family solace and the peace that surpasses all understanding. I know these two brothers will be united someday again. For now may God watch over his children, wife and loved ones. Thoughts and prayers to his family and may they know he sacrificed his life to save another and he will be rewarded in heaven.

GOD kills another one, tragic...
Wow! God doesn't kill anyone. When it is your time, it is your time.
i guess his brother can get the whole liver now
A heartless comment, by "Dr. Dooney Frankenstein."
Dooney..that's an obnoxious thought you could have spared us all.
