Exactly why a cure for cancer will never be found. The disease is too profitable for the medical industry and pharmacutical companies to "allow" a cure.
In its simplest form to cure cancer all that need be done is to find something that will kill the cancer without killing the host. Sounds easier than it is for sure, but I find it hard to believe that it can not be done, or that the Governments of the world would even allow it.
If cancer was cured tomorrow, it could easily be the straw that broke the camel's back for the worlds fragile economy. Think about it...
Life expediencies would immediately, and dramatically increase and with it the solvency of pension systems across the globe would instantly be destroyed. Many U.S. States have billions in unfunded pension liabilities now...it would only get much worse.
Insurance companies with annunities would go bankrupt
Social security and medicare instantly incurr TRILLIONS in new unfunded liabilities
Private defined benefit plans (e.g. GM, Ford, etc) instantly bankrupt
Greater need for nursing homes, assisted living, etc.
Some would argue that if we increased life expectancy, many would work longer, but in truth most retire when able and not based on how long they expect to live. And even if they did, it simply means that there are more people competing for the same number of jobs, meaning we will be taking care of people one way or another.
Unfortunately I do not believe that the Government would allow a sudden and massive increase in the general life expectancy. I fear that they would do something covertly to slow the cure to the point that it was gradual transition over several decades.
If you think about it, that kind of what has been happening with cancer survival over since about the 50's ....a gradual increase in cure rates...hmm?
Potter, what a naive and paranoid set of statements. Do you really believe this is all about profit? First of all, anyone who thinks cancer is a single disease is ignorant. There are numerous causes of colon cancer alone. I agree that the best thing to do is to try to prevent cancer by diet and avoiding toxins, such a smoking. However, if you would pick up a book you would realize that there is nothing simple about cancer. Chromasome analysis of lung cancer cell reveals that often, no two are identical. That means there is the potential for multiple oncogenes and for many forms of resistance to treatment.
Why would you think that doctors don't want to cure cancer when they work like hell to cure heart disease, emphysema, diabetes and hepatitis? It isn't that they want to make people suffer so than they can profit. That is BS. Besides, if the Cleveland Clinic could cure cancer and did it on a regular basis, don't you think that the Mayo Clinic and M.D. Anderson would be doing it too? They are in competition as much as Ford and GM are. If any doctor came up with a real cure for a specific cancer, the world would beat a path to his door, bypassing all the others. He would be rich and powerful beyond belief. Get real with your paranoia.
I could be wrong but I think Rod meant life expectancies in paragraph 3. Life expediencies are birth, reproduction and death. However, I agree, the government does not want you to live forever. It is too expensive and just not part of their plan - unless, of course, you are one of the elect(ed politicians) who are writing all the health insurance laws, both Medicare and private insurance. They want to live forever and at the taxpayers expense, which is why they are not insured in the same way as the rest of us. However, I think the drug companies are out to cure cancer AND make a huge profit. Again, the guys that find a cure for any cancer would be set for life. The reason the improvements in survival have come slowly is because the studies go slowly and the drugs are toxic. The first chemotherapy drug was developed from mustard gas. As the genome has been decoded, the ability to treat the things wrong with the genes have become more sophisticated and less toxic.
Ignorance breeds suspicion and paranoia. Maybe we should be tossing more virgins into volcanoes to appease the gods - oh, I forgot there are fewer virgins than there used to be.
New Study Explains How Pot Kills Cancer Cells

A new study published in Nature Reviews-Cancer provides an historic and detailed explanation about how THC and natural cannabinoids counteract cancer, but preserve normal cells.
The study by Manuel Guzmán of Madrid Spain found that cannabinoids, the active components of marijuana, inhibit tumor growth in laboratory animals. They do so by modulating key cell-signalling pathways, thereby inducing direct growth arrest and death of tumor cells, as well as by inhibiting the growth of blood vessels that supply the tumor.
The Guzman study is very important according to Dr. Ethan Russo , a neurologist and world authority on medical cannabis: "Cancer occurs because cells become immortalized; they fail to heed normal signals to turn off growth. A normal function of remodelling in the body requires that cells die on cue. This is called apoptosis, or programmed cell death. That process fails to work in tumors. THC promotes its reappearance so that gliomas, leukemias, melanomas and other cell types will in fact heed the signals, stop dividing, and die."
"But, that is not all," explains Dr. Russo: "The other way that tumors grow is by ensuring that they are nourished: they send out signals to promote angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels. Cannabinoids turn off these signals as well. It is truly incredible, and elegant."
In other words, this article explains several ways in which cannabinoids might be used to fight cancer, and, as the article says, "Cannabinoids are usually well tolerated, and do not produce the generalized toxic effects of conventional chemotherapies.
Usually, any story that even suggests the possibility of a new treatment for cancer is greeted with headlines about a "cancer cure" - however remote in the future and improbable in fact it might be. But if marijuana is involved, don't expect any coverage from mainstream media, especially since mainstream editors have been quietly killing this story for the past thirty years.
That's right, news about the abilility of pot to shrink tumors first surfaced, way back in 1974. Researchers at the Medical College of Virginia, who had been funded by the National Institutes of Health to find evidence that marijuana damages the immune system, found instead that THC slowed the growth of three kinds of cancer in mice -- lung and breast cancer, and a virus-induced leukemia.
The Washington Post reported on the 1974 study -- in the "Local" section -- on Aug. 18, 1974. Under the headline, "Cancer Curb Is Studied," it read in part: "The active chemical agent in marijuana curbs the growth of three kinds of cancer in mice and may also suppress the immunity reaction that causes rejection of organ transplants, a Medical College of Virginia team has discovered." The researchers "found that THC slowed the growth of lung cancers, breast cancers, and a virus-induced leukemia in laboratory mice, and prolonged their lives by as much as 36 percent."
"News coverage of the Madrid discovery has been virtually nonexistent in this country. The news broke quietly on Feb. 29, 2000 with a story that ran once on the UPI wire about the Nature Medicine article," complained MarijuanaNews.com editor Richard Cowan, who said he was only able to find the article through a link that appeared briefly on the Drudge Report Web page. "The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times all ignored the story, even though its newsworthiness is indisputable: a benign substance occurring in nature destroys deadly brain tumors," added Cowan.
On March 29, 2001, the San Antonio Current printed a carefully researched, bombshell of a story by Raymond Cushing titled, "POT SHRINKS TUMORS; GOVERNMENT KNEW IN '74." Media coverage since then has been nonexistant, except for a copy of the story on Alternet .
It is hard to believe that the knowledge that cannabis can be used to fight cancer has been suppressed for almost thirty years , yet it seems likely that it will continue to be suppressed. Why?
According to Cowan, the answer is because it is a threat to cannabis prohibition . "If this article and its predecessors from 2000 and 1974 were the only evidence of the suppression of medical cannabis, then one might perhaps be able to rationalize it in some herniated way. However, there really is massive proof that the suppression of medical cannabis represents the greatest failure of the institutions of a free society, medicine, journalism, science, and our fundamental values," Cowan notes.
Millions of people have died horrible deaths and in many cases, familes exhausted their savings on dangerous, toxic and expensive drugs. Now we are just beginning to realize that while marijuana has never killed anyone, marijuana prohibition has killed millions.

Researchers investigating the role of cannabis in cancer therapy reveal it has the potential to destroy leukaemia cells, in a paper published in the March 2006 edition of Letters in Drug Design & Discovery. Led by Dr Wai Man Liu, at Barts and the London, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, the team has followed up on their findings of 2005 which showed that the main active ingredient in cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, has the potential to be used effectively against some forms of cancer. Dr Liu has since moved to the Institute of Cancer in Sutton where he continues his work into investigating the potential therapeutic benefit of new anti-cancer agents.
It has previously been acknowledged that cannabis-based medicines have merit in the treatment of cancer patients as a painkiller; appetite stimulant and in reducing nausea, but recently evidence has been growing of its potential as an anti-tumour agent. The widely reported psychoactive side effects and consequent legal status of cannabis have, however, complicated its use in this capacity. Although THC and its related compounds have been shown to attack cancer cells by interfering with important growth-processing pathways, it has not hitherto been established exactly how this is achieved.
Now Dr Liu and his colleagues, using highly sophisticated microarray technology – allowing them to simultaneously detect changes in more than 25,000 genes in cells treated with THC – have begun to uncover further the existence of crucial processes through which THC can kill cancer cells and potentially promote survival. Further, Dr Liu found that the mechanism of cannabis may be independent of the presence of receptors – proteins found on the surface of cells to which other signalling molecules bind. Binding of molecules to receptors elicits a response in the cell, be it growth or death. The finding that cannabis action may not require the presence of these receptors introduces the possibility that the drug may be used more widely as the cancer cell’s dependence on the cannabis receptor is removed.
Whilst leukaemia treatment is on the whole successful, some people cannot be treated with conventional therapy - 25 per cent of children with leukaemia fail to respond to traditional treatment leaving their prognosis outcome poor. Dr Liu’s research findings provide a crucial first step towards the development of new therapies that can eradicate a deadly disease which affects millions of children and adults worldwide.
Dr Liu said: “It is important to stress that these cannabis-like substances are far removed from the cannabis that is smoked. These novel compounds have been specifically designed to be free of the psychoactive features, whilst maintaining anti-cancer action. Ultimately, understanding the fundamental mechanisms of these compounds will provide us with insights into developing new drugs that can be used to effectively treat cancers.”

Honestly, pharmaceutical companies sometimes pay the FDA to pass a certain drug without rigorous testing because there both laying in an economic bed with each other. Heck, we all know theres been dangerous and useless drugs made public before. Thats why you need to get your head out of the mainstream and prevent cancer in the first place.

It is a very expensive and complicated disease and I am not sure we can afford to treat it to the extent we now do. Remember the cost of Polio treatment, then Salk. Perhaps in years ahead better and less expensive treatment can be found. But for now?
I like how tobacco and obestity are fueling the rise in cancer rates but the toxic chemicals that manufacturing companies pump into the water and skies aren't. How exactly do they account for number of children who die of cancer that never touched a cigarette or weren't overweight. I worked with a guy who mourned the death of his 16 year old sister every year who died of cancer around her heart and she never touched tobacoo and was model thin.

One of the reasons the cancer rate is so high has to do with the pollution in the 40's,50's and 60's. I grew up in this time frame with really bad air pollution, DDT sprayed several times every summer for bug control, chemicals and dyes in the foods. All of these are known cancer causing agents and the results are catching up with us.

Think about it.....If a cure for cancer was found how many people would be unemployed? They would be unemployed heroes. If money is not the issue why do the drugs cost so much money? I know I have lung cancer. If the money is being donated for research why charge so much for the Meds. Some people simply die due not being able to afford the Meds and or treatments. It is sad but money rules the medical industry.

Avastin, a second targeted therapy for colon cancer approved by the FDA in February, costs $4,400 a month—still an enormous amount for a drug.
That's just stunning. And sad.

before I studied pharmacology, I also thought that companies could develop a cure for cancer but didn't because it would cut profits etc. Now I know that although we know how the body works to some extent, we have little knowledge about the cell signalling which causes cancer and that is why as of yet we have not found a cure.
The cost of drugs is still lower than the cost of surgeries that they replaced. Still pretty high in some cases.
Man has been eliminating Mother Nature's population controls for years. Why is it so hard to understand, that in Nature, only the strong survive. Some years back, I read a story about a man who had a massive heart attack. He had a triple by-pass and lived, then he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Well, the medical profession put it in remission. A few months later he was killed in a car accident. All this happened within 2 years. POINT: When it's your time to go no one can stop it.

I guess these "researchers" never say the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare Publication No. (PHS) 79-50066. It shows that for those who smoke a pack or less a day (the overwhelming majority of smokers) life expectancy is maybe 3 years less. Lot of difference in 3 years and 15 years (even if you do believe the "research" about smoking -- which I don't).

The complexities of a dreadful disease like cancer, and the elusive hope for a prophylactic vaccine, apparently deserves another look at this old challenging scientific experience; to pursue a really effective biological therapeutic cancer vaccine, through a Phase II Clinical Trial Research.
A new line of research seems to be feasible, based on the originally proposed immuno-stimulation surgical technique, safely tested previously in advanced cancer.
I am a Bolivian retired surgeon and oncologist, former professor of surgery at the Medical School of the UMSS at Cochabamba Bolivia, and past president of the Bolivian Cancer Society. I am the author of this "Therapeutic Vaccination like Technique" that I have tested randomly in Bolivia back in 1974 in a limited number of advanced Volunteer Cancer Patients of the stomach, the liver, pancreas and the retroperitoneal cavity and others with unprecedented results and extraordinary survivals. Details of the mentioned work were reported in a manuscript entitled: "Immune Spleen Stimulation Procedure" (ISSP).
Ever since 1974, I have dedicated my professional life to work on this subject and obviously I have become obsessive about the results and experience I had with those six documented patients. Because of the already known existence of the "cancer antigen", this original idea and encouraging work, was based also in the immunological principle known that "each neoplasm is an individual". Therefore the ability of the immune response to control a malignant growth, being so complicated by the "intrinsic cito-bio-molecular properties of the neoplastic cells in humans being unique and specific", explains the results obtained with the Immune Spleen Stimulation Procedure (ISSP) employed in those cases as I have reported in my paper.
The immune response of those patients to their own tumor, after the Spleen Procedure, reinforces the need to continue with this type of cancer research for a multimodal therapy, adjuvant to surgery and chemio-radiation.
I have been studying and continually reviewing actualized related medical literature and found a matching scientific rationale for the ISSP. That is why I have recently proposed in Bolivia, Brazil and the USA carry on the aforementioned Trial Research to validate the technique thus shortening the time to get the real prophylactic vaccine.
By investigating the Spleen, it will be easier to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of the regulation of the immune cell growth and differentiation and the role of apoptosis in immune cell-tumor cell interactions; cell signaling in normal and transformed T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes and other cells of the immune system; the mechanisms by which chronic inflammation and immunosuppression contribute to neoplastic transformation; the anti-tumor immune effector mechanisms and tumor escape mechanism. All these approaches are going to be of benefit in investigating the role the "Human Spleen" which certainly plays a part in all those mentioned mechanisms that really cure cancer and other human diseases. Let's explore the mysteries the previously uninvestigated spleen harbors.
