I just hope the experts are specialists in the field who are actually treating patients and are not just a bunch of ivory tower academicians who have not held a stethascope or use one in 10 years. I also hope there are no representives of big PHARMA, private insurance or bureaucrats from CMS. It would be too much to hope that none of the politicians, who meet with lobbyists and profit in all kinds of ways from PHARMA and private insurance, will not try to influence the committee.
A new study published in Nature Reviews-Cancer provides an historic and detailed explanation about how THC and natural cannabinoids counteract cancer, but preserve normal cells.
The study by Manuel Guzmán of Madrid Spain found that cannabinoids, the active components of marijuana, inhibit tumor growth in laboratory animals. They do so by modulating key cell-signalling pathways, thereby inducing direct growth arrest and death of tumor cells, as well as by inhibiting the growth of blood vessels that supply the tumor.
The Guzman study is very important according to Dr. Ethan Russo , a neurologist and world authority on medical cannabis: "Cancer occurs because cells become immortalized; they fail to heed normal signals to turn off growth. A normal function of remodelling in the body requires that cells die on cue. This is called apoptosis, or programmed cell death. That process fails to work in tumors. THC promotes its reappearance so that gliomas, leukemias, melanomas and other cell types will in fact heed the signals, stop dividing, and die."
"But, that is not all," explains Dr. Russo: "The other way that tumors grow is by ensuring that they are nourished: they send out signals to promote angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels. Cannabinoids turn off these signals as well. It is truly incredible, and elegant."
In other words, this article explains several ways in which cannabinoids might be used to fight cancer, and, as the article says, "Cannabinoids are usually well tolerated, and do not produce the generalized toxic effects of conventional chemotherapies.
Usually, any story that even suggests the possibility of a new treatment for cancer is greeted with headlines about a "cancer cure" - however remote in the future and improbable in fact it might be. But if marijuana is involved, don't expect any coverage from mainstream media, especially since mainstream editors have been quietly killing this story for the past thirty years.
That's right, news about the abilility of pot to shrink tumors first surfaced, way back in 1974. Researchers at the Medical College of Virginia, who had been funded by the National Institutes of Health to find evidence that marijuana damages the immune system, found instead that THC slowed the growth of three kinds of cancer in mice -- lung and breast cancer, and a virus-induced leukemia.
The Washington Post reported on the 1974 study -- in the "Local" section -- on Aug. 18, 1974. Under the headline, "Cancer Curb Is Studied," it read in part: "The active chemical agent in marijuana curbs the growth of three kinds of cancer in mice and may also suppress the immunity reaction that causes rejection of organ transplants, a Medical College of Virginia team has discovered." The researchers "found that THC slowed the growth of lung cancers, breast cancers, and a virus-induced leukemia in laboratory mice, and prolonged their lives by as much as 36 percent."
"News coverage of the Madrid discovery has been virtually nonexistent in this country. The news broke quietly on Feb. 29, 2000 with a story that ran once on the UPI wire about the Nature Medicine article," complained MarijuanaNews.com editor Richard Cowan, who said he was only able to find the article through a link that appeared briefly on the Drudge Report Web page. "The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times all ignored the story, even though its newsworthiness is indisputable: a benign substance occurring in nature destroys deadly brain tumors," added Cowan.
On March 29, 2001, the San Antonio Current printed a carefully researched, bombshell of a story by Raymond Cushing titled, "POT SHRINKS TUMORS; GOVERNMENT KNEW IN '74." Media coverage since then has been nonexistant, except for a copy of the story on Alternet .
It is hard to believe that the knowledge that cannabis can be used to fight cancer has been suppressed for almost thirty years , yet it seems likely that it will continue to be suppressed. Why?
According to Cowan, the answer is because it is a threat to cannabis prohibition . "If this article and its predecessors from 2000 and 1974 were the only evidence of the suppression of medical cannabis, then one might perhaps be able to rationalize it in some herniated way. However, there really is massive proof that the suppression of medical cannabis represents the greatest failure of the institutions of a free society, medicine, journalism, science, and our fundamental values," Cowan notes.
Millions of people have died horrible deaths and in many cases, familes exhausted their savings on dangerous, toxic and expensive drugs. Now we are just beginning to realize that while marijuana has never killed anyone, marijuana prohibition has killed millions.

Researchers investigating the role of cannabis in cancer therapy reveal it has the potential to destroy leukaemia cells, in a paper published in the March 2006 edition of Letters in Drug Design & Discovery. Led by Dr Wai Man Liu, at Barts and the London, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, the team has followed up on their findings of 2005 which showed that the main active ingredient in cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, has the potential to be used effectively against some forms of cancer. Dr Liu has since moved to the Institute of Cancer in Sutton where he continues his work into investigating the potential therapeutic benefit of new anti-cancer agents.
It has previously been acknowledged that cannabis-based medicines have merit in the treatment of cancer patients as a painkiller; appetite stimulant and in reducing nausea, but recently evidence has been growing of its potential as an anti-tumour agent. The widely reported psychoactive side effects and consequent legal status of cannabis have, however, complicated its use in this capacity. Although THC and its related compounds have been shown to attack cancer cells by interfering with important growth-processing pathways, it has not hitherto been established exactly how this is achieved.
Now Dr Liu and his colleagues, using highly sophisticated microarray technology – allowing them to simultaneously detect changes in more than 25,000 genes in cells treated with THC – have begun to uncover further the existence of crucial processes through which THC can kill cancer cells and potentially promote survival. Further, Dr Liu found that the mechanism of cannabis may be independent of the presence of receptors – proteins found on the surface of cells to which other signalling molecules bind. Binding of molecules to receptors elicits a response in the cell, be it growth or death. The finding that cannabis action may not require the presence of these receptors introduces the possibility that the drug may be used more widely as the cancer cell’s dependence on the cannabis receptor is removed.
Whilst leukaemia treatment is on the whole successful, some people cannot be treated with conventional therapy - 25 per cent of children with leukaemia fail to respond to traditional treatment leaving their prognosis outcome poor. Dr Liu’s research findings provide a crucial first step towards the development of new therapies that can eradicate a deadly disease which affects millions of children and adults worldwide.
Dr Liu said: “It is important to stress that these cannabis-like substances are far removed from the cannabis that is smoked. These novel compounds have been specifically designed to be free of the psychoactive features, whilst maintaining anti-cancer action. Ultimately, understanding the fundamental mechanisms of these compounds will provide us with insights into developing new drugs that can be used to effectively treat cancers.” Ends-
What does any of the propaganda Garry has posted have to do with an advisory committee on breast cancer? How many places have you posted this blog, or can you rember?
The article describes funds for BC research as "scarce". What about the millions of dollars raised every year by all the "Races for the Cure", sales of pink ribbon items and product endorsements, and all the other BC hoopla?
Hail to Gary Minor 3 you took the words right out of my mouth. We can't have this kind of research because the Feds take money away from any one studying this subject. Yet the rest of the world knows it. Even our own media can't seem to get enough BALLS to report it. What a shame to not look at new research, but keep our blinders on instead. If this plant had been found in the Amazon by some scientist it would be hailed as a natural wonder, Go Figure. All the Federal Government has to do is reclassify this plant, but can't because special interest groups put money in our constituents pockets, till they overflow, and this is politics. Suffer you Americans our government doesn't care we will try some other research for the next 50 years and waste more of your money. DIE! DIE! DIE! but first pay your taxes.
I am a breast cancer patient. I am 32 years old and have been recently diagnosed with stage 2b breast cancer. I think its great that they are going to work on getting an advisory group together and that everyone is going to try to stay on the same page.
As for the cannabis use for cancer ~ two thumbs up!!~ The federal government hates to be proven wrong. If they reclassify cannabis , which will happen eventually just a matter of how long, then we could see the health of alot of americans turning for the better. If doctors were willing to work with patients and talk about the benifits and how to get those from cannabis for their particular ailment the world would be a better place. We would also see the US creep out of this major debt that seems to grow grow grow and never decrease. The uses are unlimited for cannabis and Hemp. Our government needs to get their head out of their you know what and look around them. Do they realize that at some point the younger generation will become the faces you see in government positions and that they will push to see cannabis legalized for all? It grows wild obviously it was ment to be or it would not. They have no problem with me poisoning myself with chemo made from the pacific yew tree go figure but how dare I try to take something that will never be able to poison me? I just don't get it.
I see about 12 different doctors now since my diagnosis. I had heart issues and brain issues arise as well which adds to the large amount of doctors I see. I also see an osteopath in which I was very sceptical to see at first. He has done wonders for my aches, pains and general health. One of the treatments that I use is cannabis which in studies around the world have shown great results in breast cancer treatment as well as other forms of cancer and ailments. Please read up on this. It is not like your sitting around getting high just for the fun of it. You can actually ingest small amounts daily and not feel any weird or "high" effects from it. If you have breast cancer or other forms of cancer please please research this. I do everything possible from natural herbs to traditional medicine to keep myself healthy and prevent this dreaded cancer from returning and taking me away from my beautiful family. Wouldn't you want to do whatever you could?
Vitamin D is a huge factor in cancer prevention as well. My reg primary care as well as my oncologistnever once checked my vitamin D levels or my iodine levels. Very first visit to the osteopath doc and he places me on vitamin d and sends me for a lab test. My vitamin d level was at 14 and I should be up 70 or higher! I am now working to build up these levels, but traditional doctors just say ahh okay yes I have read that vitamin d levels in the nothern states is essential for good health. then they say well i'm glad your taking it. How dumb can doctors be? Now in the last couple months I have seen tons of news on vitamin D levels and cancer. My primary care doc now says make sure you don't stop taking that vit d!!
I live for the day when they find a cure for breast cancer as well as cancers! I have children to take care of , a family, a great life. I do not want to wake up someday and be told to start making funeral arrangements because I don't have much longer to live. I have a high chance or reoccurence due to genetic factors. One day cancer will be a thing of the past.
I just hope the experts are specialists in the field who are actually treating patients and are not just a bunch of ivory tower academicians who have not held a stethascope or use one in 10 years.
