I'm sorry, but as a grad student in molecular bio I have to tell you that is not factual. Neither has been proven effective at anything yet. And yes, IPS (induced pluripotent stem) cells have been created from adult somatic cells and that avenue should be thoroughly and completely explored. However, it would be cruel of me to say that either method has yet created any cures to diseases and that you should put your hope into them in the near future. The truth of the matter is that we need to press forward on both fronts because we don't understand the basic biology behind what we observe.
For example, IPS cells are completely man-made (not found in humans during their normal life). As a result, they exhibit peculiar traits not native to any normal cell type, and they are therefore not a good representation for studying and understanding human developmental potential. Only human embryonic stem cells offer a good model in which to actually ask the fundamental questions of human development. Furthermore, I would like to remind you that nearly every animal model treated with IPS cells (with positive outcomes - which is only a fraction to start with) end up with some form of cancer because of the transcription factor c-myc used to create them. Even newer lines without c-myc cause many cancer cases in lab animals. Please trust me when I tell you that you would not want to be treated with them.
I'm not saying embryonic cells are the only way to go.....but they must be studied in parallel before any of us can say with confidence we know what we are doing. It's not a matter of us advancing in technology enough to make new medicines, rather, it's a matter of us understanding the basic biology of the embryo which we cannot do without observing it.
And the court also is not saying that embryonic cells are NOT the way to go (in terms of science); it is only saying that they cannot be federally funded.
Adult stem cells should be studied thoroughly first. Only if there is some sort of impossibility discovered that absolutely necessitates stem cell research should such an avenue be pursued. I suspect that there is no such impossibility. The restriction is justified.
I feel like you did not read my post. Specifically, the last paragraph. The impossibility you are concerned about is one of technology (and eventually all such impossibilities are overcome when new technology is created to replace the old). But we will never really understand development by watching anything other than an embryo.
You say they, embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells, must be studied in parallel.
I disagreed with you. Adult stem cells should be throroughly studied first. Did I misunderstand?
When I referred to an "impossibility", I was referring to some benefit that is necessary and can only be provided by an embryonic stem cell.
I don't believe such an impossibility exists. While there are parts of a stem cell that only exists in embryos, I do not believe that it is necessary to pursue those avenues yet.
In all fairness, I would like to point out that if IPS cells are made perfectly, they should be quite similar to embryonic stem cells, which means that the IPS cells also have the potential to become life. Destroying an IPS cell line would be equivalent to destroying an embryo. I don't see a scientific avenue to get around that. IPS cells will never be the same as embryonic stem cells, but they could be close enough to give rise to a whole person.
You say they, embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells, must be studied in parallel.
I disagreed with you. Adult stem cells should be throroughly studied first. Did I misunderstand?
If you only looked at adult stem cells first, how would you know if there was an impossibility that they could not manage, but embryonic stem cells could? For example, if you used adult stem cells to cure leukemia, and if failed, do you automatically assume that embryonic stem cells will do the job? You cannot. What's worse if you delay potentially therapeutic regimes that's by far more unethical than killing a clump of cells.
In science you should test all theories in parallel. It was people like you who told Galileo to wait to disclose that the sun didn't revolve around the Earth,... just in case it might.
Embryonic stem cell research can continue, just not using my tax dollars.
Articles that I have read recently have shown that adult lines are curently far more promising than embryonic lines. All the more reason to continue the federal funding ban on embryonic stem cells.
I was Baptized Catholic and i pray every night and so fourth so yes i am Christian, but isn't bone marrow a form of stem cells and can that be used other than embryo's.I am for stem cell research but i feel that much more needs to be done before we can make any real assessments as to what those things are and it would be impossible obviously if we are blocked from doing so.
Apple: This is biology, not astronomy. No one had to die to find out where the Earth was located in relation to the sun.
In stem cell research, not all the cells would be destroyed so someone else could live. The vast majority would be destroyed, "just to see what could happen", or to prove or disprove a theory. It's not just medical research. This is ANY research.
If hundreds of thousands of embryos are destroyed in fruitless experiments, how is that not a tragedy?
If hundreds of thousands of embryos are destroyed in fruitless experiments, how is that not a tragedy?
These cells are already being destroyed. Instead of being used to help humanity they are being disposed of in fertility clinics in biohazard bags. Which is more fruitless?
Both scenarios are equally tragic. I don't endorse either. However, there are no restrictions on where the scientists receive their stem cells in what Barak Obama proposed. They could get them from fertility clinics or they could be "donated" some other way. Who knows? At any rate it's illegal to experiment with human lives.
Soon this will be a moot point. The rest of the world is not sitting still waiting for America. Eventually the Europeans or the Chinese or somebody some
where will spend the money do the research and solve the problems we apparently cant deal with. The rest of the world will travel into future centuries and look back at the shell that was scientific America and feel sorry for us in our futility.
Our country will be run by backward thinking religious fundamentalists. The American Taliban if you will. Homosexuality will be illegal. Gay marriage a quaint old struggle, inter racial marriage will once again be illegal and students at the great Univ. of Chicago will have to take religious oaths lest they stray into unacceptable scientific inquiry.
Our schools will be forced to teach accepted religious dogma: the earth is 4000 years old and was created in 6 days. Dinosaurs were put on earth by the devil to confuse us and adulterous women will be punished by having their heads shaved in public.
The question of stem cells will be: What are stem cells? You will have to travel to parts of the world that are in the future in order to be treated for diseases easily treated by therapies illegal in the United Christian States of America. Here it comes people!
I'm not going to bash science cause I love it and I love progress and technology, but there has to be a boundry between what is right and what is wrong. Set religion aside because I'm not personally religious. It is not a question of Christ of Buddah or whatever it is a question of a human life being destroyed so that someone could walk again. Robin I'm sorry and I would love to hear that a cure has been found for you but do you think you should take a person out of this world in order to acheive that? I don't; and Yes, I know what they say about opinions. As for the cells being destroyed anyway that is not an excuse that is a tragedy itself.
These embrios would normally be put down the drain anyway or destroyed in the lab incinerator or just not started in the first place. They arent someones babies. They aren't ever going to become viable life so I say lets learn what we can from them instead of flushing them. Not to do so is truely the waste.
Not to get everyone up in arms, but I have a question. What about eggs from a women taken and used for research? Do they fall into the category of embryo, or genetic tissue? They could be fertilized in a test tube. Or they could be developed into a clone. We really need to think this one over before we jump to conclusions. I am not sure I am qualified to make the moral decision on this. That being said I have MS and would like to see a cure in my lifetime. Where do we draw the line on this one? Everyone has a different opinion, for different reasons. Think carefully on this one. If you put the line to far one way People suffer, to far the other children won't be born that could have had a wonderful life. This one needs to be settled. one way or another it will be, eventually.
There are no restrictions on where scientists get their embryos. You're right. They could take eggs and sperm and "farm" their own.
Most people don't view a woman's egg as anything living and therefore don't have problems using them as they are. They draw the line at embryos because they are living and will eventually become people like me and you. In fact, many view them as people and say that they have the same rights as you do.
Me, I balk at stem cell research just because it's like cannibalism. These embryos may be frozen, they may be about to be thrown into the crapper, but they're not dead. Many animals eat their young for their own benefit. I just don't think human beings should be included in that particular group.
Jwhite, you are arguing from a religious standpoint, and you try to sound reasonable but you are not in the least objective. Your 'values' such as they are, aren't the rest of the world's...and I expect that when/if medical breakthroughs happen, your family will never ever benefit from them, or use that technology or medicine or treatment.
And your response to Apples was completely absurd. They said that using their tax dollars in Iraq in Afghanistan to commit murder was unacceptable, in response to your comment about using 'your tax dollars' to fund research with embryos. You responded with something about astronomy? LOL that's where your narrowminded education gets you, you don't know the names of other planets, let alone other countries on our Earth. I just shook my head after reading it several times to try to figure out what the hell you're talking about.
By all means, let's make sure that every egg and sperm that unites grows into a child, regardless if their parents can care for them. Because hell, after they're born, who cares what happens to them??
You don't get to choose where your tax dollars are used, any more than Apples and I do. WE do elect people who will, we hope, be wiser and objective when it comes to domestic and foreign policy. But hey, go ahead and withhold the amount of your tax bill that's being used for funding this research, the IRS won't mind :)
As usual, the so-called "Christians" (aka as the wing-nuts) have their collective heads in the sand (among other places...) when it comes to scientific and technological progress for the good of humanity! Why don't these people finally wake up and get a f*cking clue already? Why can't they make decisions and form opinions based on rational thought and scientific investigation/fact instead of impulsive, unrealistic, unverified, unproven, hysterical, paranoid, and out-of-touch hyperbole that's been fed into their feeble minds by the likes of Limbaugh, Bush, Cheney, Hannity, Coulter, Phelps, Huckabee, Bachman, Palin, etc...who, by the way, are making millions of dollars by playing on the emotions, beliefs, and fears of these very people!
Many Christians care less about real, live, functioning human beings with physical and emotional suffering, than a 'clump of stem cells' that could "potentially: become a human being.
I for one, do not believe a 'clump of human stem cells' have the rights equal to that of of a living human being. I have no problem with my tax dollars being used in research to save live people from hideous diseases.
And, in point of fact, people DID die for defying the church, Galileo was under house arrest for the remainder of his life. Copernicus actually first proposed the heliocentric model of our solar system. Thousands of women were murdered for opposing the church's teaching or thinking for themselves and using herbal remedies.
"special people"...charming, you're implying I'm retarded, and yet I'm not the one that believes in an irrational, contradictory mythological religious figure.
It's nice to see such intelligent, compassionate, Christians here
And, typically, you never responded to the point I made re. people dying in other scientific pursuits, you simply attacked me...when you have nothing with which to refute an argument, attack your opponent personally to divert attention from your insubstantial argument, or lack thereof...
Most people don't view a woman's egg as anything living and therefore don't have problems using them as they are. They draw the line at embryos because they are living and will eventually become people like me and you. In fact, many view them as people and say that they have the same rights as you do.
So no most people do not view a clump of cells about to be thrown away as people that have the same right as me and you!
Me, I balk at stem cell research just because it's like cannibalism. These embryos may be frozen, they may be about to be thrown into the crapper, but they're not dead. Many animals eat their young for their own benefit. I just don't think human beings should be included in that particular group.
I assume by your logic that your against organ transplants? I mean those actually came from a living breathing human being unlike ESCR.
Organ transplants are consensual. Embryos live and they breathe. According to their DNA, they are human, that's why their stem cells are valuable. If they weren't human, they wouldn't be useful and we wouldn't be having this conversation.
So... living breathing human... all we need is consent from the embryos and your comparison to organ transplant would be relevant.
(fyi: Embryos do NOT breathe, you need to go study anatomy, because breathing is the mechanical action of lungs)
By that reasoning, jwhite, if we should use the same standards as with organ transplants, then the people who have the embryos should be (and are) given power of attorney over them, to consent to their use and it's none of your business. Because not all people whose organs are donated had organ donor marked on their card, so their family (who has power of attorney) decides how their remains are to be handled.
Because not all people whose organs are donated had organ donor marked on their card, so their family (who has power of attorney) decides how their remains are to be handled.
Infact in many ways next of kin hold an even higher power. They can decide on organ donation if they person didn't mark thier drivers license. They can even in many states Veto the idea if a person marked organ donation.
I'm sure the family doesn't say, "Well, my dead son is no longer a living breathing human, so slice him up. We don't care!" They don't treat their dead relative as a medicine cabinet. They also don't release the body so that scientists can do whatever the heck they want with it. People here think embryos are objects and that no matter what the experiment or the research, using human embryos is okay.
Oh here's an idea! Why don't allow adults to donate their stem cells along with their organs. Adults can donate stem cells multiple times as well. Why wouldn't that work? There would be plenty of stem cells to research then.
Or maybe the doctors can start saving umbilical cord blood instead of throwing it out. These actually contain embryonic stem cells. They can be harvested without killing anyone?
there is nothing rational in your response. When people donate organs, yes, they damn well DO get sliced up because they AREN'T a living, breathing human being! And yes, they ARE treated as an organ source or 'medicine cabinet' because their kidneys can be donated to 2 different people, their liver can go to 2 or 3 different people, same for heart, lungs, skin, corneas, etc.
When bodies are donated as cadavers to be sliced up by health profession students, they are sliced, dissected, and used TO TEACH.
Besides which, you're completely missing the point. 1. the embryos will be discarded, flushed won a drain, put into a biohazard container, whatever...they will be THROWN OUT. So why not get some use from them that may help PEOPLE WHO ARE ALREADY HERE AND SUFFERING?!? 2. Adult stem cells, while they may hold promise, may NOT have the same potential embryonic stem cells do... 3. saving umbilicial cord blood IS happening, but shouldn't exclude or replace the research with adult and embryonic stem cells.
GET A GRIP, these are not living breathing human beings, they are clusters of cells, they have no differentiation yet. You act like people are chopping up live babies.
University of Chicago Student, you must be aware that at least two therapies using harvested adult stem cells have been proven as effective therapies in recent months.
A treatment for chemical burned corneas
A treatment for bone breaks which refuse to respond to heal normally / respond to conventional treatment
On the other hand, use of fetal stem cells in vivo to treat a variety of diseases (i.e. Parkenson's and diabetes treatments) has produced no useful treatments at this point, and has induced widespread tumors and cancers in some recipients.
As far as I understand, the major problem with Embryonic cells is that we cannot reliably differentiate into the desired adult-type cells. Starting with partially differentiated adult stem cells sidesteps this problem.
The idea is that "eventually" we should be able to do this in the lab, but the same pie-in-the-sky claims were made about human cloning starting in the 60s, monoclonal antibodies as magic bullets in the 80s, and oh so many chemotherapy drugs in the meantime.
It might be very much better to invest in the technology that has some proven results and hope that there will be tech transfer into more the "theoretical" field of embryonic cells, rather than investing in a field that has not produced an efficacious therapy after decades of study.
Yes. Not only would science be able to utilize the discarded fetus but it will also give comfort to the mothers that some good will come of their actions.
you posts are utterly ridiculous and pure nonsense.
The "imposibilities" you speak of.....how are you qualified to make such a determination of what is considered worthy as a benefit to society? Unless you have a disease of such that would put you in the group of those who would benefit from research and development ; your input or opinion isn't necessary. Your assumption that all embyos could or would produce a human is irrelevant. These are mere cells, don't confuse a person with a group of cells in a dish. The distinction is clear and absolute. Your false indication that an embryos is a human being is so bias. NOBODY ( as in a living , breathing person) is killed as you suggest in emryonic cell research. To state that as fact is a pure lie. You better go back to 10th grade biology if you think and promote that embryos live and breathe. That is an absolute falsehood that you are using to effect a change in someones perception that may not know any better.
Fact remains that so much has been learned and can be learned from the studies of human cells... all human CELLS. Nobody is killing babies with the research of stem cells. You are blurring a picture for your own cause that is totally false. A petri dish with cells in it does not constitute a human...PERIOD.
If the cells aren't human, what are they? Rat? Cat? Monkey? If they are weren't human cells, why would we need human embryos?
Your arguments against the humanity of human embryos is just silly. Even Mr. Grad Student didn't argue against it. And he's more qualified than both of us.
you are an idiot. An embryo doesn't function. It doesn't breathe, eat, think or reproduce. An embryo alaone doens't make a human. It needs a uterus, nutrition, oxygen and time.
An embryo becomes it's own seperate, functioning, being when it can perform all basic life sustaining tasks associated with a human.
LOS ANGELES — Dozens of people who were blinded or otherwise suffered severe eye damage when they were splashed with caustic chemicals had their sight restored with transplants of their own stem cells – a stunning success for the burgeoning cell-therapy field, Italian researchers reported Wednesday.
The treatment worked completely in 82 of 107 eyes and partially in 14 others, with benefits lasting up to a decade so far. One man whose eyes were severely damaged more than 60 years ago now has near-normal vision.
"This is a roaring success," said ophthalmologist Dr. Ivan Schwab of the University of California, Davis, who had no role in the study – the longest and largest of its kind.
Stem cell transplants offer hope to the thousands of people worldwide every year who suffer chemical burns on their corneas from heavy-duty cleansers or other substances at work or at home.
...
Currently, people with eye burns can get an artificial cornea, a procedure that carries such complications as infection and glaucoma, or they can receive a transplant using stem cells from a cadaver, but that requires taking drugs to prevent rejection.
The Italian study involved 106 patients treated between 1998 and 2007. Most had extensive damage in one eye, and some had such limited vision that they could only sense light, count fingers or perceive hand motions. Many had been blind for years and had had unsuccessful operations to restore their vision.
The cells were taken from the limbus, the rim around the cornea, the clear window that covers the colored part of the eye. In a normal eye, stem cells in the limbus are like factories, churning out new cells to replace dead corneal cells. When an injury kills off the stem cells, scar tissue forms over the cornea, clouding vision and causing blindness.
...
One of the successful transplants in the Italian study involved a man who had severe damage in both eyes as a result of a chemical burn in 1948. Doctors grafted stem cells from a small section of his left eye to both eyes. His vision is now close to normal.
In 2008, there were 2,850 work-related chemical burns to the eyes in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
well, "totally!" was posted after jwhite's FIRST POST. now after reading many jwhite posts, i agree with MOST of what jwhite posted. time passes.
women are more than breed mares. if people were breeding dogs and cats just to have kittens and puppies to EXPERIMENT on, wouldn't PETA be screaming its head off?
Women are NOT being bred to provide embryos for research. The embryos used are leftover from fertility clinics, genius.
Give it another shot, though, you might eventually come up with some rational, factual reason to oppose this, aside from the hysterical rantings of the religious nuts that feed you your talking points. I had to laugh at how many of you are sucked in by the bigots and idiots who are making a fortune off your gullibility and naivete.
Until embryonic stem cell research is legalized, I will continue to withhold my approval for organ donation. This is because I feel there are far more ethical problems with organ donation than there are with stem cell research. I will not change my living will and become an organ donor again until the government gets out of the ethics of science research and again approve of embryonic stem cell research. I have not had organ donation on my drivers license for almost ten years now because of this issue, even though I have lost two friends to kidney disease during that time. I just wish Christians would mind their own business and quit trying to control everybody else. ------- mind your own business!
Gary- Just out of curiosity, what does withholding organ donation have to do with embyonic stem cell research? I am pro stem cell research, as well as pro organ donation. And while I approve of both, I can understand the argument that embryos don't have the opportunity to "defend" themselves, so to speak. Meaning they can't volunteer. Organ donors are people of a legal age who willingly donate their organs after they are of no use to that person (after they die). I'm just looking for a little clarification.
The unusual suit against the National Institutes of Health, backed by some Christian groups opposed to embryo research, argued that the NIH policy violates U.S. law and takes funds from researchers seeking to work with adult stem cells.
This is not exactly true. From NPR:
A federal appeals court had ruled that two doctors who were among those bringing the lawsuit, adult stem cell researchers James Sherely of the Boston Biomedical Research Institute and Theresa Deisher of AVM Biotechnlogy, had the authority to do so, prompting Lamberth to reverse a decision he made last October.
Theresa Deisher is involved in an organization called "Sound Choice Pharmaceutical Institute", a christian based research incubator that promotes small businesses that follow christian guidelines.
Not saying that's a bad thing, just putting it out there...
How in the hell do you sue the national institute of health for doing biology research? Can I sue the Pentagon over Iraq? Two researchers screw everyone because they can't write decent grant proposals. If Christians don't want stem cell work done then why can't they step back and just turn down the benefits when they are dying? Or when their kids are. This is rediculous, hello dark ages.
The article does not clearly state to parameters of the court's ruling. How the ruling effects adult stim cells, as stated in the article, is hard to understand. As a rule of thumb: any preemptive court order, or for that matter a satute law, which is based solely upon a personal religious beliefs; is a clear violation of the 'Separation of Church and State' found in the First Amendment of United States Constitution.
Way to go Christians that is absolutely wonderful news!! The right thing to do always prevails in the end!!
It has made my monday and just shows that there is still hope for this country!!
Gods grace is bringing us back to conservative ideas and will save our nation and our souls!! In a strange way I want to thank you Mr. Obama and the extreme far Left!! Next up gay marriage, sodomy and abortion and putting God back in our lives and schools so what say you Leftys LOL!!
Not everybody in the U.S. is a Christian anymore. There are plenty of other faiths and lots of American Agnostic and Athiests. I don't believe that jesus either loves me or died for my make believe sins that I did not have when I was born. I don't really care for Democrats but I will support anybody that keeps my life from being ruled by a Christian Theocracy Taliban.
rattus68, if the CHRISTIANS really were like the taliban, wouldn't the taliban WELCOME them, rather than KILL them? CHRISTIANS are the very polar opposites of the taliban. but then you knew that, didn't you.
@SCOLE. I know of a country in the middle east. This country is extremely fundamentalist. They still use stoning as a way of punishment. Can you find this country on a map? Or do you need your preacher to show you? Would you like to live in the stone age? Ignorance can be fixed. Try a book, other than the bible. University of Chicago.. Thank you for that post.
"God" is a concept invented by ancient men to desperately try to explain and understand naturally occuring phenomenon such as lightning, earthquakes, floods, etc. The four gospels of Jesus' disciples were written about seventy to a hundred years after Jesus died...leaving no way for Jesus' actual disciples to have written them. There are several gospels written just years after Jesus' death that were excluded from the New Testament because they didn't jive too well with early church leaders' view of Jesus. So I won't be putting all that much faith in the Bible or any god for that matter.
There is a big difference between Christianity and Sharia Law so that argument is lame!!! Surely those textbooks at U of C should have taught you that or not because they are too busy like all universities in brainwashing the Leftist Liberal anti-god agenda and from the post on here unfortunately it is working!! Ever wonder the so-called smarter a person gets common folk or scientist the further from GOD they become! CONSPIRACY ANYONE..So keep it up and we will be the smartest ATHEIST UNEMPLOYED COUNTRY in the world and we can sit around and MIND WRESTLE each other!! But heck they have been doing that for 100 millions years or so right!! So one day you will come to your senses and I pray for you it will not be too late!! Academia and Atheism seems to go hand in hand and that is PATHETIC PERIOD!!!
I don't want your Jesus hate shoved up MY rear. Be respectful. Darwin must be rolling over in his grave as well, we are using stem cells to perpetuate flawed lifeforms, who then pass on nasty genetic traits. We are all going to be weak and disease ridden because of modern medical science. yea~!
Matticus- The bible may be old but it was an inspired work of God. He worked through his people to get his message across. You are correct that there are gnostic books of the bible out there, but many of the dead sea scrolls found are incredibly accurate to the bible we've been passing down, meaning LITTLE was changed in all those years. Do your reasearch. There are churches that use a gnostic bible. Don't lump christianity together under the catholic church, there are many denominations that reasearch and let science and God walk hand in hand.
I don't want your Jesus hate shoved up MY rear. Be respectful. Darwin must be rolling over in his grave as well, we are using stem cells to perpetuate flawed lifeforms, who then pass on nasty genetic traits. We are all going to be weak and disease ridden because of modern medical science. yea~!
Many people believe that stem cells will help cure neurological diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. That being the case, these individuals would have already produced offspring and therefore the "nasty genetic traits" are already passed onward. Thus, Darwin would have nothing to say about this in reference to Darwinian genetics.
The bible may be old but it was an inspired work of God. He worked through his people to get his message across.
Prove it. Prove that the bible was the word of G-D. And even if you CAN prove it, please explain then why the old testament, presumably also the word of G-D, is not adhered to by Christians.
There is a reason Academia and Atheism seems to go hand in hand, that is because 'REASON' and 'LOGIC' disprove what organized religion say is true. I for one am grateful to have been freed from the brainwashing dogma of my Catholic upbringing. I can now truly see with my eyes open, and head held high, and see the wonderous, beautiful, world. I am no longer cowed by the edicts from a church that's only goal is to control the minds of the masses, in order to perpetuate itself.
Your post was wonderful. I too, rec'd my primary education from the Jesuits. Many of the Catholic kids were so inwardly miserable and depressed. I still know some of my primary education homies that are now free of the catholic church and are recovering catholics and christians.
I know that all of your pain made you a better person and it shows.
Your mind is still being controlled just by a much lesser form of people!!
So you keep handing over your money for worthless "reason and logic" aka uneducated guesses!! Oh and The church and God doesn't want any money from you and has much more to give you in return(Salvation and Peace)!! And I am glad your eyes are open and your head held high so that you see the glory of what our GOD has created for you and me!! God Bless you Dana and one day you will come around I hope..
U.S. district court rules against stem cell policy
Where did the article mention religion? You slack jawed, pseudo-religious hypocrites try and push your views, and twist every article on newsvine to support your twisted way of thinking. At what point are you going to stop?
It's called a leap of faith for a reason. If he came down and rattled your house of course you would believe in him but what is the point of that if he needs to to KNOW him without fear? No one opens hearts to his presence anymore. If you could shut off your iphone you might hear him.
And we are keeping genetically SICK people alive to keep breeding. Maybe people know early on they have genetic and hereditary issues and choose to breed anyway. Selfish!!
I did my research. A lot of the Gnostic gospels, nevermind the stuff actually included in the Bible itself contradict. Why would god contradict himself constantly?
God gave us these wonderful minds that have the capacity to learn SO much about life and all it's little intricacies. Why would he not want us to use the minds he gave us to learn more? That doesn't make any sense.
By your belief, God is good, correct? And if God is truly good, that means he is not malicious or mischievous. So it would contradict the notion that "God is good" if you believe he gave us these great minds but did not want us to use them to their full potential. Do you believe God is good, and wants us to use the gifts he gave us? Or is he mischievous, and only seeks to tease us with possibilities that we are not supposed to achieve?
God did give us our great minds. These great minds have every potential to do anything and everything. You are correct. Just because our minds are capable of such things as murder, extortion, creating nuclear warheads and etc, means that we should do it just because we can?
Life is a series of tests. It is your choice whether you want to pass or fail. And in the end, you are not your own judge.
But stem-cell research is used for the benefit of humanity, to find cures to disease and illness. Everything you stated are acts that promote violence and destruction. So you can not compare the two.
But at this point you will state that stem-cell research is murder, because it "kills babies" . . . right?
Well, as previously stated, these embryo's were created for artificial insemination, so they were not all destined to be babies in the first place. By that logic, are you also against artificial insemination? Will you go to fellow Christians who can not naturally conceive, and deter them from having a child through artificial insemination, because it results in the "death of babies"? Will you explain to them that God did not want them to have babies, otherwise he would have let them conceive? Or will you support their efforts to raise a family, through any means possible?
Furthermore, if stem-cell research and abortions are "murder", then what is a miscarriage? By your definition, you must consider a miscarriage manslaughter. Thus, would you support a cause that seeks manslaughter charges against any mother who has a miscarriage? Would you charge your self, sister, mother, or daughter with manslaughter? If the decision to terminate a fetus or embryo is murder, then unintentional actions that lead to the termination must be considered manslaughter. Would you put your own family in prison for that? I have a feeling your convictions and belief do not run that deep, do they?
LOL don't bother trying to reason with theists...they BELIEVE in the face of all reason. It's extremely convenient that they rely on faith, not proof, because there is none. And if you show any to them, they deny it.
Just as a point of fact, if you compare crime rates among theists and atheists, atheists stay married longer, divorce less, and commit FAR fewer crimes than theists. Not just in number, but as a percentage of respective faiths.
Why? because we understand that we are responsible for our actions, and realize that our actions that are harmful to others, are harmful to society as a whole. WE do what's right because it's the RIGHT thing to do, not because we're in fear of hellfire. But hey, as a christian, you just say you're sorry, repent, and nothing that you did that's bad is actually BAD.
"...reason and logic" aka uneducated guesses!!" Reason and Logic are PROVEN methods for reaching conclusions, aka TRUTH.
uneducated guesses are what is preached from the pulpits: aka woman was created by taking a rib bone from Adam; the Earth was formed in 6 days; Moses parted the Red Sea...shall I continue? NO rational thinking person can believe ANY of this, the logic behind the physics of all three examples are IMPOSSIBLE!
the constitution SAYS the government is supposed to keep it's nose OUT of the church, NOT that the church can't say whats up to the government. the government is NOT suppose to prescribe which church you go to etc, but it DOES NOT say CHRISTIANS are not given a voice in the government.
the early fathers made it clear they were not going to keep up "the STATE church" like merry ol england had. many of the LEADERS in the revolutionary war were CHRISTIAN PASTORS who wore their robe for church service, then took off the robe, and LED the gun fight at the bridge later! THEY put their life on the line FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM~!
"separation of church and state" is a myth spread around by people who don't want to listen to GOD's rules in a CHRISTIAN NATION.
people who are always bringing up the "church and state" stuff, should just move out of the country. life was much BETTER before that hooey began bringing up its ugly head in the nation. very strange modern news, considering all the remarks about "freedom of religion" now WHEN it is FOR the "conquering" muslims in NYC. strange. very strange. when Christians have a point, all of a sudden, someone drags out the "separation of church and state" damper on clear thinking. duh.
"people who are always bringing up the church and state stuff, should just move out of the country"
While I understand your frustration I recommend you make a larger effort to reach out to people who feel differently and communicate about the scientific goals of this country. For reasons larger (but including) stem cell funding, many scientists are taking your advice and are leaving. Each country that has stopped science in favor of doing something else first, even with the intention of restarting science later (Germany, for example) has fallen. At heart, I suppose the scientists are capitalists, and we go where we can work. But I would hope you would want that to be here.
It also doesn't say that your narrow and bigotted opinions can be forced on the rest of us. How would you take it if we found a bigotted group of voters who took our position that Christians are second class citizens with no right to marriage, should be taxed based on the number of children the have, no tax benefits for money given to religious organizations, and that you couldn't build a religious edifice within 20 blocks of any abortion clinic, anywhere in Oklahoma and that the words "God" and "Jesus" are so offensive to us that you have to use "G-word" and "J-word" in public? All it takes is one more of us to vote and you have no rights, isn't that what you are doing to all of us?
When churches in America start paying taxes is when I'll listen to what you have to say. Till then church and state are separated for a dame good reason....
There is another country that lets a religion dictate all the laws. Do you want to guess which country that is? I'll give you a hint . . . there currently many US soldiers fighting there.
University of Chicago Student, you speak out of both sides of your face. you are one of the most BOSSY writers on the VINE. like you know it all. YOU from the hicks in the sticks, right? and you finally moved to the big city, and don't you strut your stuff. do you see my eyes rolling? are you the first one from your family to go to college? well, brag on, but get over yourself. some of your thinking is so convoluted. speaking of "off topic"....you so judgmentally collapsed a writer earlier....and now you are wallowing off into "stopped science". duh.
"people who are always bringing up the church and state stuff, should just move out of the country"
While I understand your frustration (oh la-dee-dah, you do not.)
I recommend, (and who are you, but some kid from the sticks who finally made it to the big city? ....with the arrogance to be the self appointed representative of the University of Chicago none-the-less. )
you make a larger effort to reach out to people who feel differently (and you are such a shining example of that accepting of others by collapsing an earlier writer who HAS very good thinking, but just pulled up the stakes on you....and YOU did not want to be questioned!)
and communicate about the scientific goals of this country.(and WHO are you to tell me what i should talk about. your arrogance really frys my gizzard.)
For reasons larger (because of course, YOU are such a big thinker)
(but including) stem cell funding, many scientists are taking your advice and are leaving. (if they are doing evil things like experimenting on BABIES in one form or another, then GOOD RIDDANCE to BAD RUBBISH!)
Each country that has stopped science, (expand your thimble, nobody is talking about "stopped science". duh.) in favor of doing something else first, even with the intention of restarting science later (Germany, for example) (and we all know Germany is such a flawless example) has fallen.
At heart,(does it take a "heart" to experiment on babies? what would dr. meingela (sp), the old creep from hitler's germany who experimented on CHILDREN, say about embryonic stem cell experimentation? he would obviously be FOR it.)
I suppose the scientists are capitalists, and we go where we can work. (that is "off topic" isn't it? where does the MONEY come in to the decision of what is right or wrong? put enough money in front of your nose, and you will DO it? what ever it is?)
But I would hope you would want that to be here.(no, absolutely not. if the "modern" day meingelas want to experiment of LITTLE humans, then by all means, TAKE OFF and leave the country, and don't come back. besides that, i certainly DO NOT recommend to anyone else to accept them to their country to experiment by using a woman as some sort of brood mare to produce embryos for these "dr. meingalas" to fiddle faddle with.
At no point, in your rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.
Well fire, I'm sorry you're so upset.....that would be the exact opposite of what I wanted. Some of your points are disagreements of morality; that is, it sounds like you've made up your mind on a subjective matter and therefore there is no point arguing with you about the potential benefit of stem cell research while you have decided no amount of good can make up for what you see as its moral shortcommings.
However, I would like to respond to the anger and frustration you express. You say I speak out of both sides of my mouth? Because I make myself out to be like the average guy but then try to one up him? I think instead it is the following: I have values much the way you do, but on a few topics we differ sharply. You would be right to examine my background to understand this. I am a different type of conservative. In the hicks and sticks, as you put it, where I grew up we were more libertarian than anything. I hold many conservative values, yet we argue over stem cell research. I personally find it more disturbing to debate someone who is closer to my political leanings, which I think is why you are more angry with me than most liberals.
I wanted to comment on that because I do feel strongly that the GOP needs to strike out in a new direction, but still has a lot to offer if they could move forward, and I want to be a part of that. But now I really am off topic. Hope that relieved some of the tension.
fire letterman- First off I thought I was the most Bossy writer on the Vine. Second -Get over the David Letterman thing Sally. Third youre just pissed because you flunked out of community college and are now forced to listen to educated, intelligent people. Pathetic !!
Why is it when I read the Federalist Papers by Madison last he did not use one reference to the Bible in the very lengthly philisophical discussion of the justification for the various points of the new constitution? There were plenty of references to Greek and Roman classical authors and history and also to European history. I think that the present day Christians are a totally different sort, and they have no business claiming that America is a "Christian Nation." In fact todays Christians are one wing of the reactionary right whose politics has little to do with what the founding fathers were talking about. They have become a special interest group which undermines the democratic principles this country was founded on.
Fire Letterman- WHY are YOU yelling AT us? Life may have been better for you before people started adhering to Seperation of Church and State, (and no, I'm not moving out of the country, so deal) but it certainly wasn't better for those people who were being persecuted for not adhered to a religion that they did not believe in. That is why this nation was founded specifically to protect its citizens from religious persecution, and from religious zealots such as yourself. The church has no influence on the state, as the state has no influence on the church. They are two seperate institutions. Two seperate entities. This is not a Christian nation. Just because Christianity is the dominant religion does not make it the religion of the nation. There is *No* national religion. Don't like it? Tough it out , because that has always been the case, and it will always be the case.
And in my personal belief, most Christians fail to bring up valid rational points on anything. All they can do is fall back on an archaic and outdated text. But, that just being my own personal opinion, has no real weight on anything. Just felt like sharing. I hate Sheeple.
Mike4703, I think that most religions were meant to help men help other men. That's a good thing. Fervent fanatical hypocrites see ripe pickings in blind faith, much like taking candy from a baby, and twist it into something ugly. That is what we see far too much of in present day "Christianity". Perhaps this proverb from the Bible would lead all to better understanding:
Proverbs 9:7-8 Whoever corrects a mocker invites insult; whoever rebukes a wicked man incurs abuse. [8] Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man and he will love you.
Commonsense- I like what you said, because unfortunately, Christianity *could* have been a good thing. Jesus Christ was a true activist in his own right, a forward thinking revolutionary who challenged the modern day philosophies, and opened his heart to many troubled people. If that agenda had continued in the Christian religion, the world would indeed be a much better place today. Instead, it was corrupted by hateful men and women who twisted it to fuel their own ugly agenda. Christ never turned away anyone (especially those condemned by society. He loved them the most). I refuse to conform to a religion that propogates hate, which is sadly what Christianity has ultimately become.
As someone who could very much benefit from stem cell research, this bothers me. The human embryos they are using are extras that were not implanted from fertility clinic artificial insemination efforts that would otherwise be destroyed. If they are going to be destroyed one way or the other, I would prefer they be used in research than destroyed with no benefit to anyone. This ruling is based on a misguided law that was passed during the Bush administration that banned federal funding for human embryo stem cell research, regardless of the source of the embryos. A restriction on the source would have been more appropriate to ensure that the embryos were not created for the sole purpose of research, but that would have allowed using embryos from sources such as fertility clinics. Unfortunately, I think it would take a change to the law to override this court decision. Based on the current law the judge's decision is correct. For once we have a judge that is enforcing the law rather than be an activist and overriding it. Even though I disagree with the policy, I support the judge for staying within his scope of authority. While the law is no doubt based on religious beliefs, I do not think that the law itself is unconstitutional. If someone can point me to something in the constitution that says otherwise, please do. But do not simply point to the separation of church and state, because that is a little too vague to challenge this law, since the law does not serve to establish or promote any one particular religion.
I'm sorry for your medical condition, but that is a human life that is being mutilated for experiment and I am happy for this outcome. No one has the right to take another life by any means.
I think you missed the point of the previous post. The human embryos that would be used are destroyed every day at fertility clinics. During the process of artificial insemination numerous embryos are produced and only one is selected for implantation. The rest of the embryos are either frozen or discarded depending on the protocols of the clinic. While this process is completely legal and common, no one seems to complain about the process as it is not stigmatized by the terms “stem cell research”.
Just for the record, there are a number of organizations (mostly Christian but not all) that try to find adoptive mothers for embryos so that unused embryos don't have to be destroyed.
I will agree with you ONLY when miscarriages are treated the same way. By that, I mean I want every religious woman who has a miscarriage to be brought up on manslaughter charges. Sure, she didn't murder the baby on purpose, but her actions led to the death of a "human life" (as you call it.)
Do you see the hypocrisy of Christians (and other religions)? You see, they call it murder when it's a choice . . . but they want to ignore manslaughter. Well you can't have it both ways. Either it's a human life, and manslaughter applies, or it's not. Pick one.
Give me a break!! These embryos are being poured down the drain!! What part of that do a great many of you not understand! They hold the potential promise of cure or at least relief from a myriad of conditions that are progressive and debilitating. What part of that do you not understand? Many of you are so up in arms about the "destruction of human life" but you don't get that way about all the children in this country who are already being abused, starves, beaten etc. You won't step up to parent the babies who already need help. These embryos are being destroyed in a much less dignified way so I say let them be used for research and hopefully for miraculous discoveries that only they can provide. And yes--use my tax dollars. I can think of a lot of things my taxes are used for now that are far more offensive.
ka56, yes, and they have a "club" too, right? what is the name of it? these little walking, takling, LIVE "embryos"....having a GOOD TIME in life! because they were born. (and not thrown into the garbage).
So, fire, you follow them to make sure that they're all well fed, cared for, and loved? You pay for their upbringing, college, etc?
How responsible of you! I'm so relieved that somebody is actually making sure they're cared for beyond just making sure they're born, regardless of the circumstances into which they're born
Thoughts from Cali - According to the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy pregnancy, "Except for the use of some illicit drugs, your actions can't cause a miscarriage."
Linda, Fire, Wherescommonsense - Bethany Christian Services (www.bethany.org) is just one of the many organizations that organizes embryo adoption. They also specialize in international and domestic adoptions (many of them children with special needs), foster care and raising money for single mothers and their children. So for Linda who thinks that we don't care about the children who are already suffering or for Wherescommonsense who thinks that we won't help in the long-term, I suggest that you get to know a few more Christians because the ones I know practice what they preach.
thanks, I've had more than my fill of 'Christians'.
While some of you may practice what you preach, the majority don't. Good for you, now do something about the rest who are hypocrites and control freaks, who want to tell everybody how to live their lives, rather than worrying about their own failings.
Maybe I am missing something here, but it is my understanding that fertility clinics are there to help someone get pregnant. Any embryos that are there belong to someone who has voluntarily gone there for treatment. Those embryos belong to someone, and therefore the decision should belong to that person as to what happens to them. If they choose to have any remaining destroyed, frozen, or donated for research, it should be up to them.
To ka56, "... there are a number of organizations (mostly Christian but not all) that try to find adoptive mothers for embryos so that unused embryos don't have to be destroyed."
That's not even legal. You can't use another person's embryos to have a child (without their permission, at least). So are these organizations harassing these poor women who are at these clinics getting treatments? Trying to convince them to donate their remaining embryos to other women. That's the most ridiculous thing I have read in a long time, if it is true.
That's not even legal. You can't use another person's embryos to have a child (without their permission, at least).
That's why it is adoption of the embryo, i.e. it is done with the woman's permission.
So are these organizations harassing these poor women who are at these clinics getting treatments?
Wow, this is a loaded statement... ("have you stopped beating your wife?") It just might be possible that someone who went through an IVF procedure and doesn't want more children might actually want to donate their excess embryos to infertile couples.
I have no problem with adoption of embryos as long as it is done within the law etc. Problem is that there is no way that takes care of all the embryos that are disposed of every day. My argument is that I would prefer seeing those used in research which dignifies their existence as opposed to thrown down the drain as if they are trash. An embryo has the potential of viability but is not a viable being as yet. That is a huge distinction. Truth is that every woman sheds most of the eggs she produces and men flush sperm by the millions. All of those put together have the potential to create life. Nature provides the mechanism which does not allow that to happen. Using the embryos created for in vitro and then not used for that is giving them a new purpose. It is insane to prefer that they be dumped down the drain.
Wherescommonsense - I can't do any more about self-righteous Christians than the average Muslim can do about terrorists. I think they're in the minority but like most extremists, they tend to be more vocal and obviously more memorable. We would call this sort of stereotyping bigottry if it were towards any other group of people but somehow it's acceptable and even popular when it's towards Christians.
Anyway, my original point was that many of the people who oppose using embryos for testing are trying to find alternatives to seeing them destroyed. And one of these alternatives is embryo adoption.
That is true. However, the alternative use of embryos should not preclude the scientific use of those which will be discarded anyway. As I have said, scientific use is far more dignified than simply being poured down the drain. The embryos contain the potential to be a human being but are not yet that. To view them the same way one views a newborn baby is ridiculous.
jcbwell: It is wounderful you know what is writen in the First Amendment of the Constitution. It would appear from the content of your writing, you might be misguided in the meaning; of that, which so elegantly quoted. Any court ruling or statue law, which seeks to establish preemptive redress based upon a religious belief, against the actions of American citizens; is in fact, the establishment of religiom.
Science has nothing to do with this. God let that embryo be created to sustain a life and just because it was "extra" has nothing to do with science. Only science destroys living cells for their own benefit. God has the last word on this and his Word says it is murder.
contesa: I applaud your clearness of mind and aderence to your moral duty. For myself, I fell inellecturally inadequate to make such a profound moral judgement for others. It is all I can do; to endeavor, to do choose the right path for myself.
ok, guess what? if you don't like this research, then MAKE SURE NEITHER YOU NOR YOUR CHILDREN in perpetuity EVER use any of this research to cure your ills.
God will grant you a special place in heaven...
Fact is, if you use any medication, treatment, or technology to cure an illness, you're defying God's will because you're not allowing Him to decide whether you will live or die. Likewise stem cell research would fall under that umbrella, so refuse all medical treatments and just pray over your children, parents, family members for God to heal them.
What's that old joke, guy stranded on his roof in a flood prays to God for rescue. A boat comes by, but he tells them to go on, he's waiting. A helicopter comes by, he tells them to go, too. Eventually he drowns and when he gets to heaven he says 'I prayed to you, why didn't you save me from drowning?' and God says 'I sent a boat and a helicopter, what more did you want?'
you are mistaken. No "god" allowed the embryo to be created...science did - in a petri dish. And for the record, an embryo dosn't sustain life. It has potential to become a being that is independant and able to sustain itself. An embryo doesn't function outside of a uterus. It would cease if outside a place where it receives oxygen, nutrition and safety.
From stem cell research to global weather to where a mosque can be built, isn't it wonderful that those who are obsessed with their right to practice their beliefs get to tell everyone else how to live, what to do, what to think, and they can do all this with no science or fact to back them.
How wonderful it must be to know everything and only have faith to rely on for your perfection.
same mentality that cost us 1000 years of scientific gains. if it weren't for Christianity we'd all be living 200 years. yea Christianity! must be in a hurry to get to eternity.
before the pro-aborts began beating on their worn out drums in the old days in the 70's, most people, whether they be Christian or not, would have thought that to EXPERIMENT on someone's BABY would be just totally GHOULISH and creepy and EVIL.
You attacked me unjustly and without provocation. Is that your Christian way? No, I will back any party that seeks to promote keeping church and state separate and Christianty out of my life and my family's life. Its churches are rotten and filtly and winnowing out. Look at how the catholic church is getting taken down in America and elsewhere.
If I wanted to live in a theocracy I would move to an Islamic Republic but I like freedom from religion here.
would have thought that to EXPERIMENT on someone's BABY would be just totally GHOULISH and creepy and EVIL.
Well, it's a good thing a blastocyst is not a baby then... even if the anti-abortion folks from back in the 1970s on up to today would like us to think so...
Yes, just look at the lifespans in all of those non-Christian countries! Wouldn't you just want all of that for America?
Well, maybe you mean that religion is the problem.... Well, just look at non-religious and medically forward Cuba. A medical paradise? A fountain of youth? You decide.
Fire Letterman - According to all studies, embryo's are not babies. The stage of development in which an embryo becomes a fetus (or what most people consider a baby), doesn't happen until week 10. Prior to week ten, it is considered a blastocyst, or a collection of cells containing embryonic materials. That being said, there is nothing evil about using an embryo that is going to be discarded anyway, and that is a fact. These embryos are left overs from fertility clinics. These embryos were not harvested for the direct purpose of stem cell research. They will simply be dumped down the drain, flushed away, scraped. Why, WHY should they be thrown out when they can be of so much value to help sustain human life? As a "Christian", you're supposed to value human life. That embryo is not a "human". It has no "life". But it does hold a vast majority of answers that can help cure many people who need it. Give me one *logical* reason why that is wrong. I dare you. And for the record , capping and shouting every other word at us doesn't constitute as logical. It's really just annoying and takes away even more from an already illogical argument.
When legislation is being created or not created in the name of a religion....that is interfering with my personal choice to not practice in one.
You may also want to go back to 9th grade HS biology. Embryos are nothing more than a cluster of specialized cells that have a potential for more. Comparing a embryo to a human is like saying a seed is a tree. Embryos don't sustain life. They don't breathe, eat or reproduce. And to say as such is totally false.
Science and research has been stunted for so long that we have actually lost time, money , cures and lives. Get off your high horse and stop being so arrogant to think that embryos...human or otherwise....should be considered for anything more other than the random cells they are.
LETS TALK ABOUT WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON HERE!!!! This new potential kind of Medical approach, will surely change Medical Industry, and Practice as we know it today. It may even be the "Fountain Of Youth", and be the way to cure almost every type of physical ailment, and illness, which Mankind currently has!!!!?? SO!!,....this would mean the end to much of the way we currently Practice Medicine, and treat Patients!!! THIS IS A TRILLION U.S. DOLLAR INDUSTRY!!!! ,...Drugs, Hospitals, Doctors, Medical Equipment, and all that goes with this kind of Medical Activity!! DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE THE HUGH SALARIES, BONUSES, PROFITS, made and paid in the Medical Industry,......and hugh "SPECIAL INTEREST" Industry, with Billions to be paid to the Federal Government-Congress!!!! This is one of the most powerful and rich Industries in the World!!!!....they have hugh Profits, and Many Offshore Factories/Operations, tax breaks etc., etc., !!!!! THEY DO NOT WANT THE GRAVEY TRAIN, DE-RAILED!!!!!! WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!! GH
Yes...a lot is done off shore. Christians can bray like cur donkeys to their hearts' content. However, you mentioned, among other things, "the possibility of human embryonic stem cell research finding a Ponce De Leon, type of "Fountain of Youth?"
When have you ever read about money not prevailing over any and all endeavors in America? Probably never. How many ads, bus benches, bill boards advertising or implying "youth rejuvenating " surgery, drugs, and weenie hardening compounds like Viagra?
The Christian bible thumpers, at this point, are merely "reactionaries" as embryonic stem cell research, either right or wrong, has been linked to the "fountain of youth" and better sexual activity and all of that jazz.
The course is therefore set without one court case. For it to affect America it does not even have to happen or take place in America.
However, when have you ever known Americans to stand in the way of making money that is not completely clean. It is said in Arabic that "a $50.00 bill knows no master."
Because of all of the hedonism that exists among Republicans alone (forget the lefties as they are not even needed) like Suntan John Boehner-----the course for America in regard to this matter is set and it cost less money and is much more profitable for the GOP and the ultra rich than even invading Iraq was. Of course the taxpayers will have to pay for all of the tabs for Iraq and to support all of the Iraqi refugees that America will get withing the next decade.
The bible thumpers backed the wrong horse and crippled themselves and are only exceeding at making enemies and alienating people.
Just another example of how misguided religion really is. Instead of saving hundreds of thousands of people a year from terrible diseases... they would rather protect a handful of cells that would otherwise be flushed down a drain. Its just more irrational, and fanatical thinking from the religious community. More evidence that belief in religion is reserved for the un-educated, irrational, and non-logical among us... as long as they have any pull in the government the rest of humanity will suffer that the hands of their delusions.
Just wait till some of you are dieing a long, slow death of one of those diseases...
How can anyone say that God did not have those extra embryos created for exactly what is going on here? How can anyone know if He didn't plan it that way so there would be extra embryos that were not meant to be brought forth in the way that everyone assumes they should (as a baby) but were meant to bring forth a better, happier, life for those who have sickness, disabilities, etc? Who can absolutely say what God's plans are?
There is no "Church and State" in the Constitution, it was in a letter Benjamin Franklin wrote to someone. So this idea so many have that the Constitution forbids Church and State is not true. Just a fact, no option really regarding this.
I do have an opinion, however, on the use of embryonic stem cell research. If we allow this we opne a very slippery slope for what is okay in stem cell research and the question is where will that slope lead to? Just because we can doesn't mean we should and this opinion has nothing to do with religious beliefs. Some things are just not okay.
Sort of like the "majority rules" myth, right? We don't live in a democracy, we live in a constitutional republic where judges can check the voters by ruling gay marriage constitutional.
I'm just saying neither is officially protected by the constitution. I think you might be happier if you accepted both myths, which would still give you the power to vote things down you didn't like if you were in the majority.
The slippery slope argument is itself a slippery slope! One could make the same argument about many things . . . if we allow adult stem cell research, what is next, embryonic stem cell research, and then what? Okay, so we've now eliminated stem cell research
If we allow experimenting on animals, what is next humans? Oops, there goes most medical research!
If we allow people to eat pork, that will be offensive to Muslims and Jews since they do not eat pork. So now we can't eat pork!
As far as separation of church and state, you are corect that the phrase does not appear in the constitution, but the statement, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances" seems to pretty much cover the issue.
The objection to embryonic stem cell research is generally one of concern because Christians consider an embryo to be human life. Scientifically, that is not the claim.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
United States Constitution, Amendment 1 - Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression
So my religion states that there shall be this and that and the other that is against your tenets, what then? I do not believe in your religion, your god. Why do you think people left their home lands to come here. I do not agree in your delusion. I don't care if Ben Franklin wrote a letter about it or if was or was not in the constitution I still don't want someone elses religion involved with my government process.
I do vote and accept both sides but believe neither Dem or Reb have the Nations best interest in mind anymore. You chose the lesser of two evils in every election now. Each side works to get as much power as possible regardless of what laws or ethics are ignored to do so and regulate to bypass existing laws.
I agree, we do live in a constitional republic but corruption is at its heart.
Paul the whole concept was to keep the state out of religion not twisted to allow a vocal minority like you to ignore ethics, regardless of what religion they come from. Name called shows who you really are as a person. Try to understand the concept and why it is there rather than using only what is useful to your arguement.
"The concept of separating church and state is often credited to the writings of English philosopher John Locke.[8] According to his principle of the social contract, Locke argued that the government lacked authority in the realm of individual conscience, as this was something rational people could not cede to the government for it or others to control. For Locke, this created a natural right in the liberty of conscience, which he argued must therefore remain protected from any government authority. These views on religious tolerance and the importance of individual conscience, along with his social contract, became particularly influential in the American colonies and the drafting of the United States Constitution.[9]
The concept was implicit in the flight of Roger Williams from religious oppression in Massachusetts to found what became Rhode Island on the principle of state neutrality in matters of faith.[10][11]"
Mark, Christians are the LAST ones to talk about ignoring ethics...guess what 'faith' the wall street rapists and congressmen/women are? And the VAST majority of the prison system is...So much for ethics...
The bible belt has the highest divorce rates in the US behind Nevada. The Godless Liberal Northeast has the lowest... go figure...
The First Amendment means that I don't have to have your religion crammed down my throat. Nobody requires you to utilize any treatments that come from this research. So just don't use it, the rest of us may...
"There is no 'Church and State' in the Constitution, it was in a letter Benjamin Franklin wrote to someone. So this idea so many have that the Constitution forbids Church and State is not true."
The concept of "separation of church and state" was in fact first articulated in a letter written by Thomas Jefferson, who was also the author if the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution, but it was also stated by others of the Founding Fathers. In an 1878 case styled Reynolds vs. United States, the US Supreme Court ruled that the declarations of Thomas Jefferson in the area of separation of church and state have the force of Constitutional law.
Attributing this core legal and philosophical concept to Benjamin Franklin instead of Jefferson merely emphasizes the appalling ignorance of zealots driven by religious agendas in this dialogue.
"The purpose of separation of church and state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe in blood for centuries."
(~~James Madison, 1803)
"They [preachers] dread the advance of science as witches do the approach of daylight and scowl on the fatal harbinger announcing the subversions of the duperies on which they live."
Sad how ridiculously backward this country is when it comes to scientific research. If a cure for diabetes, Parkinsons, MS, or any other disease is found it will have to come from Europe or Asia. Disgusting.
If a cure for a disease was found using stem cells would one of these anti-stem cell research people refuse it?
No they would jump on board like it was their idea all along. Like the idea the earth is round. And like the idea that the earth is not the center of the universe. Like the idea that there are these litle tiny invisible things called germs.
These religious morons have been fighting scientific progress for thousands of years. Why should they stop now? I am hoping that we will eventually breed them out of the gene pool and we can have a better society of atheists. What a beautiful vision.
Adult stem cells die quicker which leads to failures throughout the whole process of using stem cells. What in the world would make anybody fight over where the stem cells came from unless there was a difference? I am a disabled veteran and I am more than willing to do it all over for your right to free speech no matter what you want to say, but your beliefs has no business deciding where my tax dollar goes. You are as bad as any fanatical organization. Do you wonder why there is a decline of population in churches? The other side is not winning you are driving away those that otherwise mght have embraced your church.
Well stated crabdusty. Religion could be a very positive institution if it weren't for these zealots ruining your image. I believe in God, and consider myself a spiritual person, but I will never be a part of an institution that is so blatantly discriminatory and self righteous. If we could get rid of the nut jobs, I'd rethink the whole thing.
Funding should be allowed. Most people in the world are not Christians and don't want to live by a religion's rules. Science and government should be protected/separated from religion. (it used to be the other way around) The government cannot mandate a religion and Christians need to stop bullying people who believe something else or nothing at all. We are a nation that endorses all religions, no religions, and for that we should be proud. This is what I believe but I really liked what JS in SD said too. See post above!
A lot of nonsense by a lot of atheists. It is illegal to do so under current law. If the law is changed it will be legal. Oops I forgot atheists believe they are gods because God does not exist so they have the right to destroy what others consider life. Do a little research and find out where embryonic cell research has been done it has yielded nothing better than stem cell research.
As an atheist, I resemble that remark. No, we don't believe we are gods, we believe that there are no "gods". We also hate ignorance. We hate faith, superstition, tarot cards and anything else that make the ignorant masses think there is something about this world except what we can see, taste, touch smell or measure.
It's called reality. You should try it, its nice this time of year. ;)
can you "see, taste, touch smell or measure" your feelings? love? intuition?
just because a blind guy says he can't see something, doesn't mean it is not there.
dead taste buds, dead nervous system, cut off noses, broken measuring cups....can't be making all the decisions. a tone deaf man should not be in charge of tuning up the orchestra.
it sure is good to know you have no interest in superstition, tarrot cards. they ARE evil. you are ahead on that score.
you have FAITH in the chair you are sitting on. FAITH that it will hold you and not come crashing down to the floor. everyone has faith is something, sometime. it is very wise of you to NOT believe in all sorts of gods. you go before GOD WHO CREATED HEAVEN AND EARTH....(He likes science, He invented it) and you ASK Him to please say Hello to you....and He will take it from there. ENJOY. don't listen to ANY false gods. they are evil. ONLY the ONE TRUE GOD, WHO CREATED HEAVEN AND EARTH....that is the ONLY one you are interested in.
afloatinasea, it sure is embarrassing that some self-appointed judgemental sort, who embarrasses the University of Chicago on such a regular basis, took it upon himself to collapse you! to be so narrow minded about differing opinions does NOT make him a good scientist, that is for sure! it is VERY small minded to accuse you of "being off topic". he is really working with a very, small thimble there!
embarrassing! ignore him. his judgement of: "both "no value" and "inflammatory." rediciulous!
Actually, I'm an athiest and I don't hate much of anything. This mythical, pseudoscientific and hateful movement in this country discourages me though. People are trying to save lives with this research.
Unfortunately chances are that you or a loved one will suffer from any number of conditions that have the potential to be treated / studied in order to provide cures using ESTs. I wonder if your stance on the issue would change if you were directly affected by such a condition and knew that it could be cured / helped by the use of ESTs.
First off I would like to say I am a Christian and a very strong believer in faith as well as science. I have always believed that God is IN science and why would god give us the tools and the understanding to create medications and treatments if he did not want us to find and use them. I also know that even though I dontagree with them entirely that abortions have been going on for hundreds of years and will continue to do so even if they are done in an illegal "hospital" or on dirty streets. At least this way people are monitored and safe (although I do believe stronger restrictions need to be put in place, its a last resort not birth control)
That being said, Why not use the loss of a life (that will happen anyway whether we like it or not) to possibly save a life one day. My grandfather passed from ALS and I have a friend with MS. I feel that these could one day be cured and/or prevented by stem cell research. Possibly even save some unborn children.
after that, you might like to apologise for the "ignorant" comment. it is a very interesting site. you can sign up for the newsletters. MAN UP....read at least a month or two, THEN make your judgements. ENJOY.
Ha ha, I went to your site as recommended. Thanks for the humorous link; there is some pretty hilarious stuff on there. To return the favor, I'm going to post one of my favorite humor sites: www.theonion.com
Christians should be aware that the vast majority of humans are not Christians. Our country is for everyone including those who do not believe at all. The original Americans sent messages to the spirit world on the smoke of burning sage. Let's ask them to weigh in on this topic. I say, use the embryos that would be discarded...or is that a crime? Protect science, school, and government from all religions.
John-2248486, i got to see a couple of real life HEAD HUNTERS, speaking of the "vast majority of humans are not Christians".... what do you think you would do if YOU met them, BEFORE them became CHRISTIANS!? they had killed people. bing&google: Elizabeth Elliot ~ Jim Elliot
religion is like food. some is good, the rest is toxic, worthless, cotton candy junk food, downright EVIL, etc. but you CAN'T through out ALL food. you have to decipher between the good, and not so good. the real and the junk. you don't say "GET RID OF ALL FOOD", just because someone breaks out in zits, or gets too fat, or is allergic to gluten. everyone would STARVE to death on "get rid of all"....food.
You speak as though Christians have never killed anyone in the name of their religion. How would you have liked to have been a Jew who was forced to convert to Christianity during the Reconquista in Spain and subsequently accused of still celebrating Channukah instead of Christmas, then dragged before the kindly, loving Christians of Torquemada's Inquisition, tortured with hot irons and tongs until you admitted your apostasy, then burnt alive at the stake?
Religion has almost always been the enemy of Reason and Science.
It doesn't really matter... it's just one more cutting edge research project and industry which will shortly be taken over by China... after all they only graduated 500,000 engineers last year... we did 150,000... but we probably did 500,000 lawyers....
China is working 24/7 with their best and the best foreign talent they can hire. If they get it the money they have made off of the Americans so far will be "small potatoes" and China will take gladly what the Americans have left.
All of the people in pain and sick will pay dearly for cures or pain relief. However, for vanity, Americans will be willing to pay much more.
The Chinese know this well and they do not allow any Christianity into their program as they know that it just phucks up progress and causes bad feelings.
Well, considering about 1/4 of the worlds population is Christian, they sure do think they run the place! Tell you what. You go ahead and pray your sickness away and leave the rest of us to medical science, okay? Now go play on a cross or something.
Those are some harsh comments. I am a Christian and by no means think I run anything but my own life. I dont "play Jesus and nail anything up on Easter." And I have prayed sickness away and I have had unexplained miracles happen in my life. Can you say the same?
Your comments are immature, disgusting and offensive. And I will bet you could care less. At least some people in this world have compassion for others.
I surely hope you never, ever find need for something deeper than your own sense of self-aggrandizement. You are not, nor ever will be, better than the feces that the neighbor's dog leaves on your lawn. For that matter, neither will I. In all honesty, if I live a life according to a certain set of tenets and I die and nothing happens other than my body rotting into the ground, what have I lost? But if I blatantly turn my back on even the mere possibility of God or religion or faith or anything and live however I want and treat people however I want... then I die and I'm wrong? I've lost everything. Your hate speech isn't any better than those who burn crosses or speak out against Muslim houses of worship in NYC or people who use the N-word. Last I looked, we all shared the same DNA... it's all human. Yes, even those embryos that are no more than a 'clump of cells'. Human DNA. Not chicken, not cat, not monkey or bear or lion. Human. And if we can't seem to have some sense of respect of life for even the smallest part of who we are, for the very youngest building blocks of what we are, then we are a sad, sad society.
Let me pose a question to you. If we were to find out that our elderly housed a certain kind of 'aged' genetic mutation that, if extracted and planted into children, would cure everything from buck teeth to spina bifida... would we be pushing for a legal ruling that would allow us to say that life is over at 80?
This isn't about God, or Jesus or Allah or Christianity or Buddhism or Atheism. It's about a fundamental respect for humanity.
One, I never referred to if I favored stem cell research or not so your assumptions are wrong. Two, i have Faith and that is my choice. I KNOW i will not be S#it in the ground as you claim you will be. Im sorry you feel that way. And since it is my belief and my choice, yes if you arent a believer and you have known Christ and rejected him, then yes you will not be where I will.
I wasnt even referencing the article just simply stating that those posts were rude and offensive. The only hate speeches were the ones posted above my comment. I was only doing what everyone else does and defending what I believe in. (Just as your post.)
@Stitzelfritz: Regarding your thought experiment: hell the @!$%# yes. In my aged state, as I've already lived (what I presume to be) a full life, if something about me would enable even one young life to live better and more ably than he or she might otherwise, then by all means.
Suck the marrow from my bones and have at it.
Part of being human, bro, involves knowing when to be altruistic and sacrifice for the greater good.
One would have to make the assumption that all people believe in God to pray that the research would stop. There are many people who don't and agree with the research.
I would assume it also has to do with what diseaseone is suffering from and how one feels about science as opposed to religion and it's domination over the human mind.
Of course one does not have to be religious to oppose the research for what ever grounds. As for being religious, there a lot of people who believe that coming this far, is God given, not against God.
This issue IS NOT BLACK and WHITE. So the decision to go up against Obama is far, far from over, and for a lot of people it has nothing to do with the money the companies are going to make. It has to do with progress.
Adult stem cell research has been proven effective. There is no reason for this embryonic stem cell research to go on.
Don't worry U of C student you're using a reasoned scientific argument against people who are using religious doctrine to base decisions.
shoupster: Please tell me what religion I am, I will tell you where to go. :)
Well they can darn sure use my tax dollars! I'm a t4 paraplegic and I sure would like to see a cure for what I've got.
Unfortunately, individuals don't get to decided. Otherwise I would say that my tax dollars cannot be used to commit murder in Iraq and Afghanistan.
University of Science Student,
Cant you just make an educated guess because that is what most science is RIGHT?
A million years here a million years there I mean come on how can humans even begin to FATHOM that amount of time REALLY!!!!
Most(not all) is just a big scam to take your money and teach you that maybe and probably is a correct Factual answer to a question!!!
And the two biggest jokes are evolution and global warming!!! All a liberal atheist agenda purpotrated by CON ARTIST and NEOCONS!!!
Given China's human rights record, I'm surprised they're not experimenting on human fetuses.
They already forcibly kill them with saline. Why not use their little bodies to help humanity? :)
I think that is a great question.
I have no problem with my tax dollars being used in research to save live people from hideous diseases.
wherescommonsense: Um... you know, maybe you should learn how to read. You know. Really... learn... how to read.
LOL
reread it dumbass, that's what you said..
And, in point of fact, people DID die for defying the church, Galileo was under house arrest for the remainder of his life. Copernicus actually first proposed the heliocentric model of our solar system. Thousands of women were murdered for opposing the church's teaching or thinking for themselves and using herbal remedies.
Do I really have to point the obvious to you? Hint: Look at who wrote the comment about tax dollars...
Take your time. I know its hard for "special people".
Apology accepted. :)
Why don't you go 'pray for me', too, while you're imagining things that I did or want you to do :)
jwhite1083
59% of people view embryonic stem cell research as morally acceptable while only 32% view it as morally unacceptable.
So no most people do not view a clump of cells about to be thrown away as people that have the same right as me and you!
But we don't. So it's not. Sorry. :(
(fyi: Embryos do NOT breathe, you need to go study anatomy, because breathing is the mechanical action of lungs)
Sooooo GLAD you're finally seeing reason.
wherescommonsense
Has anyone thought of these options?
there is nothing rational in your response.
Why is this comment closed?
University of Chicago Student, you must be aware that at least two therapies using harvested adult stem cells have been proven as effective therapies in recent months.
The comment is closed because people don't agree with it.
Yes. Not only would science be able to utilize the discarded fetus but it will also give comfort to the mothers that some good will come of their actions.
Jwhite,
you posts are utterly ridiculous and pure nonsense.
And he's more qualified than both of us.
cells are no more HUMAN than a seed is a TREE
to BE is not the same as to have potential to BE...........
At what point does an embryo stop being a "potential" human being and starts being a human being?
you are an idiot.
Until then it is nothing more than some cells.
Stem Cells Reverse Blindness Caused By Burns, ALICIA CHANG | 06/23/10 11:37 PM |
In 2008, there were 2,850 work-related chemical burns to the eyes in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

totally! agree with jwhite1083
well, "totally!" was posted after jwhite's FIRST POST. now after reading many jwhite posts, i agree with MOST of what jwhite posted. time passes.
women are more than breed mares. if people were breeding dogs and cats just to have kittens and puppies to EXPERIMENT on, wouldn't PETA be screaming its head off?
An embryo is no more a puppy than it is a child.
Your argument has no substance.
Well, well, guess what I found out?
This is not exactly true. From NPR:
There went the "Christians are evil" argument.
Theresa Deisher is involved in an organization called "Sound Choice Pharmaceutical Institute", a christian based research incubator that promotes small businesses that follow christian guidelines.
Not saying that's a bad thing, just putting it out there...
http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v466/n7303/full/466159a.html
An editorial from Nature. Interesting...

I posted this last week on my coloum.
I don't want your stinking jesus forced up my rear end.
But Rattus68 He LOVES you too my friend and brother in Christ!!!
Lol, one small step forward for "god" ten giant leaps backward for mankind.
Scole,
Not everybody in the U.S. is a Christian anymore.
Insha Allah!
Matticus,
But mankind is nothing but for his GRACE!!! So I will gladly take his step forward instead of ours as we are nothing compared to him!!!
Bull.
I will pray for you anyways rattus68 as you are just a little confused and lost but it will be okay as the scripture says!!!
rattus68, if the CHRISTIANS really were like the taliban, wouldn't the taliban WELCOME them, rather than KILL them?
God is imaginary, and prayer is nothing but superstition. You know that, right?
Twerp,
There is a big difference between Christianity and Sharia Law so that argument is lame!!!
Rattus68-
I don't want your Jesus hate shoved up MY rear. Be respectful. Darwin must be rolling over in his grave as well, we are using stem cells to perpetuate flawed lifeforms, who then pass on nasty genetic traits. We are all going to be weak and disease ridden because of modern medical science. yea~!
Matticus-
The bible may be old but it was an inspired work of God. He worked through his people to get his message across.
Prove it. Prove that the bible was the word of G-D. And even if you CAN prove it, please explain then why the old testament, presumably also the word of G-D, is not adhered to by Christians.
Santa has had more of a positive impact in my life than Jesus.
to Scole:
There is a reason Academia and Atheism seems to go hand in hand, that is because 'REASON' and 'LOGIC' disprove what organized religion say is true. I for one am grateful to have been freed from the brainwashing dogma of my Catholic upbringing. I can now truly see with my eyes open, and head held high, and see the wonderous, beautiful, world. I am no longer cowed by the edicts from a church that's only goal is to control the minds of the masses, in order to perpetuate itself.
Dan,
Your post was wonderful. I too, rec'd my primary education from the Jesuits. Many of the Catholic kids were so inwardly miserable and depressed. I still know some of my primary education homies that are now free of the catholic church and are recovering catholics and christians.
I know that all of your pain made you a better person and it shows.
Dan01,
Your mind is still being controlled just by a much lesser form of people!!
Selfish!!
Seem like alot of people on this blog dislike the Church and God because they wont let you live your ALTERNATE LIFESTYLES LOL!!!!
Atheism is just a mind COP-OUT to not be held responsible for your sinful living!!
Joe Veteran,
Thats it my brother let the Hate out before it consumes you!!
God Bless you my friend and Thanks for your service!!
I did my research. A lot of the Gnostic gospels, nevermind the stuff actually included in the Bible itself contradict. Why would god contradict himself constantly?
But Scole,
God gave us these wonderful minds that have the capacity to learn SO much about life and all it's little intricacies.
SCOLE, you have proven my point:
"...reason and logic" aka uneducated guesses!!" Reason and Logic are PROVEN methods for reaching conclusions, aka TRUTH.
uneducated guesses are what is preached from the pulpits: aka woman was created by taking a rib bone from Adam; the Earth was formed in 6 days; Moses parted the Red Sea...shall I continue? NO rational thinking person can believe ANY of this, the logic behind the physics of all three examples are IMPOSSIBLE!
You all have been trolled. Well played SCOLE
the constitution SAYS the government is supposed to keep it's nose OUT of the church, NOT that the church can't say whats up to the government. the government is NOT suppose to prescribe which church you go to etc, but it DOES NOT say CHRISTIANS are not given a voice in the government.
the early fathers made it clear they were not going to keep up "the STATE church" like merry ol england had. many of the LEADERS in the revolutionary war were CHRISTIAN PASTORS who wore their robe for church service, then took off the robe, and LED the gun fight at the bridge later!
There are too many Agnostics, Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims for you right wing white bible thumpers to pull that crap off coninually now.
Try to deport me! You can't!
When churches in America start paying taxes is when I'll listen to what you have to say. Till then church and state are separated for a dame good reason....
There is another country that lets a religion dictate all the laws. Do you want to guess which country that is? I'll give you a hint . . . there currently many US soldiers fighting there.
Take your time.
University of Chicago Student, you speak out of both sides of your face. you are one of the most BOSSY writers on the VINE. like you know it all. YOU from the hicks in the sticks, right? and you finally moved to the big city, and don't you strut your stuff. do you see my eyes rolling? are you the first one from your family to go to college? well, brag on, but get over yourself. some of your thinking is so convoluted. speaking of "off topic"....you so judgmentally collapsed a writer earlier....and now you are wallowing off into "stopped science". duh.
University of Chicago Student

Mr. fire letterman,
At no point, in your rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.
It's not a human life, it's the possibility of a human life.
I'll take the possibility of helping disease-"mutilated" humans that already exist over a few cells any day.
Contesa:
I think you missed the point of the previous post. The human embryos that would be used are destroyed every day at fertility clinics. During the process of artificial insemination numerous embryos are produced and only one is selected for implantation. The rest of the embryos are either frozen or discarded depending on the protocols of the clinic. While this process is completely legal and common, no one seems to complain about the process as it is not stigmatized by the terms “stem cell research”.
Just for the record, there are a number of organizations (mostly Christian but not all) that try to find adoptive mothers for embryos so that unused embryos don't have to be destroyed.
Contesa,
I will agree with you ONLY when miscarriages are treated the same way.
WHEW!!!!
That's why it is adoption of the embryo, i.e. it is done with the woman's permission.

Once again, the Anti-science crowd wins...

read that for a year,or a few days, and you WON'T be saying "anti-science" again. ENJOY!
jcbwell: It is wounderful you know what is writen in the First Amendment of the Constitution.
That is only if you believe in your god. I do not, therefore it was not created for any religious fanatical reasons.
sigh...
ok, guess what? if you don't like this research, then MAKE SURE NEITHER YOU NOR YOUR CHILDREN in perpetuity EVER use any of this research to cure your ills.
High Five!!! Well stated.. needed good laugh..
contesa.....
you are mistaken. No "god" allowed the embryo to be created...science did - in a petri dish. And for the record, an embryo dosn't sustain life. It has potential to become a being that is independant and able to sustain itself. An embryo doesn't function outside of a uterus. It would cease if outside a place where it receives oxygen, nutrition and safety.
go back to 10th grade biology.
Now, how about the rest of us and our rights?
You seem to have a very intense belief about this! You're even getting out there and proselytizing others to join you.
same mentality that cost us 1000 years of scientific gains. if it weren't for Christianity we'd all be living 200 years. yea Christianity! must be in a hurry to get to eternity.
quickster, nobody is forcing you to be CHRISTIAN. where are YOUR scientific break throughs?
before the pro-aborts began beating on their worn out drums in the old days in the 70's, most people, whether they be Christian or not, would have thought that to EXPERIMENT on someone's BABY would be just totally GHOULISH and creepy and EVIL.
Moreover, stuff your jesus.
Insha Allah
It's really just annoying and takes away even more from an already illogical argument.
fire letterman,
When legislation is being created or not created in the name of a religion....that is interfering with my personal choice to not practice in one.
GH
Gary,
Yes...a lot is done off shore.
Insha Allah
Just another example of how misguided religion really is. Instead of saving hundreds of thousands of people a year from terrible diseases... they would rather protect a handful of cells that would otherwise be flushed down a drain. Its just more irrational, and fanatical thinking from the religious community. More evidence that belief in religion is reserved for the un-educated, irrational, and non-logical among us... as long as they have any pull in the government the rest of humanity will suffer that the hands of their delusions.
Just wait till some of you are dieing a long, slow death of one of those diseases...
We all die sooner or later, come the personal terms with that.
Why do some people advocate opening Pandora's Box for your own immortality. Which one seems more selfish and misguided?
How can anyone say that God did not have those extra embryos created for exactly what is going on here? How can anyone know if He didn't plan it that way so there would be extra embryos that were not meant to be brought forth in the way that everyone assumes they should (as a baby) but were meant to bring forth a better, happier, life for those who have sickness, disabilities, etc? Who can absolutely say what God's plans are?
To John S-400329........Amen!
After reading all religious posts in this forum, I have never been more convinced of this statement.
Sadly true UCS, we're not in Kansas anymore Toto........:(.
Re-tard
The concept was implicit in the flight of Roger Williams from religious oppression in Massachusetts to found what became Rhode Island on the principle of state neutrality in matters of faith.[10][11]"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separation_of_church_and_state
Mark, Christians are the LAST ones to talk about ignoring ethics...guess what 'faith' the wall street rapists and congressmen/women are? And the VAST majority of the prison system is...So much for ethics...
The bible belt has the highest divorce rates in the US behind Nevada. The Godless Liberal Northeast has the lowest... go figure...
The First Amendment means that I don't have to have your religion crammed down my throat. Nobody requires you to utilize any treatments that come from this research. So just don't use it, the rest of us may...
(~~Thomas Jefferson, 1823)
The earth is round? LOL
You're right: religion has held back progress. I can't believe these reactionaries still exist.
I find your comments uncalled for, in addition to being off topic. I will therefore mark your post as both "no value" and "inflammatory."
I'm sure you have the complete and correct picture about life. You know it all and think everyine else should agree. Typical religious bull.
GOD BLESS YOU. He does already, i know, but....
afloatinasea, it sure is embarrassing that some self-appointed judgemental sort, who embarrasses the University of Chicago on such a regular basis, took it upon himself to collapse you! to be so narrow minded about differing opinions does NOT make him a good scientist, that is for sure! it is VERY small minded to accuse you of "being off topic". he is really working with a very, small thimble there!
embarrassing! ignore him. his judgement of: "both "no value" and "inflammatory." rediciulous!
Actually, I'm an athiest and I don't hate much of anything. This mythical, pseudoscientific and hateful movement in this country discourages me though. People are trying to save lives with this research.
just a another ploy by the right-wing zealots to control everyone.

Ignorant bible thumpers strike again!
Next they will attack scientists for making the absurd claim that the earth isn't the center of the universe. Oh, wait, they already did that.

@fire letterman
How sad your post and how true your post.
Sad is right. Other countries are passing us by while we sit on our fat asses and watch Oprah and plan who we can sue next.
Well, considering about 1/4 of the worlds population is Christian, they sure do think they run the place! Tell you what. You go ahead and pray your sickness away and leave the rest of us to medical science, okay? Now go play on a cross or something.
Right. They can play jesus and nail each other up on Easter.
I know you arent referring to me.
You and I must have both responded at the same time, because I was referring to the poster above you.
Sorry...
I got over a cold once without taking any medication. If that doesn't prove the existence of God, I don't know what does! Thankee Jesus! Praise God!
Like I have previously stated, its all personal belief.
At least you have the decency to capitalize what needs to be capitalized.
Well, there goes a cure for me, short of a pancreatic transplant.
Oh, and there also goes a cure for the others like me, too.
Thanks alot.
They are no where near a cure for anything, so stop the hyperbole.
We would be a hell of a lot closer to a cure if stem cell research had not been crippled by the last administration.
And Christians are praying and working day and night to make sure that there never will be a cure for anything. Praise Jesus!
