Whole Foods claims the eggs they sell are cage free? The news is showing the two places in Iowa where the eggs come from, they don't look like cage free farms. How are we supposed to know who is telling the truth these days. I am going to do my best to find a local farm to get my eggs from.
I can't help but think why the whole human race didn't die off centuries ago from eating eggs...maybe because back then they didn't slather themselves with antimicrobial goop and try to protect themselves from natural organisms present in everything, every day. Or maybe they didn't have the media telling them everything was going to sicken them or kill them. I wonder how many people with a stomach virus are reporting salmonella poisoning?? And what are they doing, licking the shells??? I'm not a back to Nature freak but in this I have got to say: stop being such germophobes, live a little, take your kids to a petting zoo and stop having a heart attack if they sneeze and don't instantly go sanitize themselves from head to foot. We'd have a healthier country.
Adela I couldn't agree more! Now if we can just get everyone else to we'd be on the right track!! If my kids sneeze I just say bless you and hand them a tissue if needed. It's how we get immune to the nasty stuff.
aside from growing your own chickens/eggs you WILL find salmonella contamination in poultry products of all kinds. Even then you will likely be exposed, the chicken is just a dirty animal that scratches around in feces of all kinds. The solution is to COOK YOUR FOOD. Properly cooked and served and stored food will be safe no matter how dirty it was to begin with. If you must eat it raw, sanitize it first. There are a number of products on the market to do this and even if you are eating your own home grown produce you should still sanitize it(unless you are growing in a sealed isolated greenhouse you will at the least have insects and birds @!$%#ting in your garden). However, please read about the connection between childhood exposure to pet feces and asthma. Actually, kids NOT exposed to household pets and their feces are about 5 times MORE LIKELY to contract pulmonary disorders. So, lesson learned: cook your food and let your kids get dirty!!
Why do we have to cook our eggs until they are like rubber to be safely eaten? I'm 59 and up until relatively recently, you could eat a soft boiled egg without being rushed to the hospital. Can't we have the egg producers use the same hygiene methods in egg production that was used 40 years ago when it was safe to eat an egg no matter how it was cooked?
go out to the great plains and get fresh eggs from the free range chickens. LOL I think hard boiled or scrambled if they are cooked really well is about the only way to be eating eggs for awhile "or" look at it as a way to start your {salmonella diet plan}
Another idea, replace the USDA inspectors fired under the Greed Over Patriotism economic terror. USDA plant inspections in 1972...10,000. In 2006......2,500.
If you were around in 1972, you might remember that our food, medicine and water were safe to consume.
There's less inspections because there only a fraction of the number of egg farms. They either got bigger or closed up shop. By 1987 they had already dropped to 2500 egg farms.
There's presently 5 farms with over 5 million birds each. Approximately 250 farms produce over 50 % of all eggs in the U.S.
It's like grain farms. There was a time you could make a living of a 100 to 150 acres. Today if you aren't farming 500 acres you probably have another job in town to make ends meet.
Small, even 'family farms' are just as likely to produce eggs contaminated with salmonella. Free range/uncaged birds will still need to be kept in a coop protected from predators especially at night. The birds go into their shelter when it gets dark. Chickens cannot be litter-trained, they poop everywhere regardless of how much room they have. One advantage to buying eggs from a small producer or keeping your own chickens is that fewer people might become ill. Organic producers rely on a variety of manures (produced by animals) to add needed nutrients to their soils.
Look, why dont upu do as I did and buy a rabbit cage set it behind your house on stilts and slap a couple chickens in it. They eat crushed grains, Wheat corn and feed, and water. You can give them a protien feed thats just fine. Order chicks from Mc Murrays and put them in a walmart plastic tub w/ a 60 watt bulb, feed them chick feed untill they get adult feathers and then stick em in the cages. Bada-Bing! you got eggs. Get all your feed at Tractor Supply. Bada Bing! Keep them in the cages for two weeks dont let them out durring this time. Then you can let them roam and at dusk they fly right back in there coops and roost till morning. Bada Bing!
I think the BAD EGGS are in Washington. This looks like a thank you from the Obama administration to the egg farmers who supported him. Watch out for higher prices without any new safety considerations.
No, if our toe gets stubbed, that would be Bush's fault, bc that would be past tense damage. The egg sickness seems to be an ongoing thing, so I would say that fault belongs to Obama....lol.
WHAT??????? this is a conspiracy? you must be very flexible to have arrived at that conclusion. :/ haha-------it's a bunch of chickens laying eggs with germs on them!!! wash your eggs before you eat them..........hello?
ajvenom - We're at the mercy of ineffectual government "inspectors" - the FDA, etc., who aren't doing the jobs we pay them to do. They don't find dangerous or poisonous factors until AFTER we've bought and used the products and people either get sick or die. Remember the recalls of children's Tylenol, Zyrtec, Benadryl, and Motrin this year? Cribs, car seats, toys, children's jewelry? Meats, fish, and poultry? The list is endless.
My husband and I were talking about this egg problem just this morning. I'd updated him that the count was now over 500M eggs, and he asked me if any article listed the companies and other identifying factors.
An hour later, I stumbled upon this article and showed it to him. Then, I checked my eggs and was glad to see that Eggland's Best wasn't on the list. Even though I love fried eggs, I'll scramble ours. Once this case has been cleared up, there's nothing to say that it won't happen again. I've really missed having fried eggs and medium rare burgers, but I don't dare eat them anymore.
I follow these rules: At a restaurant, order food medium to medium well.
There's too much negligence in testing and monitoring for all of our products. Next up will probably be tainted toothpaste or another mundane product that everyone uses daily.
Oh Dear, what about mad cow disease? Can't give blood till the year 2253! How long, considering these deadly illnesses, do they think I want to live. Get a reporter on this one.
Maybe... just maybe.... don't eat eggs!! GO VEGAN!! there are plenty of wonderful recipes!! Yes, it takes a little more time... but then you're not as likely to be wasting time being sick either... ?????
housewife55 -- Going vegan doesn't solve all of the problems. Good hygiene and properly cooking our foods solves most of the problems of potential contaminants. Even fruits, vegetables, and grains are very often contaminated, unless you live in a bubble shield environment. If vegan works for you, fine. As much as I love fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, I do enjoy well-prepared, tasty meat dishes flavored with herbs and seasonings.
Radicalism, at any level or scope, doesn't solve problems and doesn't work for everyone.
psp if you've had home grown eggs you should know that all you have to do to make sure there is no developing embryo in it is to put it in front of a very bright light or something a lot easier is just make sure no rooster has got to the hens.
psp-620489 -- I'm not sure what you mean by "eekkie" or "if they are good." If you didn't have roosters, the hens laid unfertilized eggs as their menstrual cycle. If roosters were in proximity, candling is used to identify any fertilization that may or may not have taken place inside each egg. Candling, or shining a bright light upon each egg, shows whether or not an egg has been fertilized. This is basic Chicken Sex 101 - menstrual cycle and fertilization.
My husband grew up on a chicken farm - no roosters. His job was to tend to the chickens, clean the coops, and collect the eggs. I showed him your post, and he confirmed to me that fresh eggs are absolutely not "eekkie" and one definitely does not have to crack the egg into a bowl to first to "see if they are good before you use them." Before the eggs were shipped, each eggshell was cleansed and sanitized. If egg farmers had to crack each egg to determine "goodness," the general public would never have eggs in their shells -- think about that!
When farms and chickens are well-tended, there is no "eekkie" about eggs. It's also up to us consumers to use appropriate hygiene and cook our foods to appropriate temperatures.
Local farm raised eggs have a darker yoke and have a higher density to them. My kids won't touch because they don't look right. It's what your used to.
I was raised on a farm and it took a while to get used to store bought eggs & Milk!
For people who don't know, Local farm eggs are usually free range, which means the chickens eat things other then just grain. Any insects or bugs are free game for them.
Local Farm milk is majorly different as it's not been homogenized and has a higher fat content even after skimming the fat off.
This may be the best news in the world for the local farmers - seeing these big outfits hit with the blame for supplying toxic eggs. Buying at the nearby farms (of which we have many here in Maine) is something we should all consider doing. I have been remiss in that I have been doing one-stop-shopping at the supermarket for a long time. I do visit the weekly farmers markets but don't think to buy eggs there. There is a chance of contracting salmonella anywhere, but at least if we buy locally we are eating fresher and supporting the local economy. I am heading to the farm after work today for my dairy products.
Maybe Obama can take over all the chicken farms and add to the long list of the unemployed, start raising chickens at the white house and then Rev. Wright will be right about the "chickens came home to roost".
kaviaq -- Why so Obama-sensitive? Did Pat touch a raw nerve that flustered your Obama adoration? Smart people know that he prefers to insert himself into private, local, and state matters when he should focus on his job description: national and international issues.
I don't doubt that he'll soon issue a proclamation about eggs and tell us how we should buy them and prepare them. Maybe he can tell us all about this at his next photo-op or TV appearance on "The View."
If the USDA did their job we wouldn't have problems like this.Unfortunate for us insignificant people the only time you hear from the people who are suppose to be looking out for your best interest could care less as long as they get paid. It is the way they raise the chickens and what they feed them. Read the article. Most people who disagree no nothing about raising animals in the first place. Use your common sense. They tell you where the eggs that are bad came from. They tell you every brand that is involved. All you have to do is get on your stupid computer and read. So simple a kid can do it.
Sorry about that. The only time you hear from the people who are suppose to be looking out for your best interest is after something goes wrong. They could care less as long as they get paid is what I had to say.
it seems to me that we don:t have to worry about terrists destroying us, we are doing a pretty good job of it ourselfs by fear of everything. what:s next on recalls?
Know what you're getting-- Good post about reading egg carton labeling:
Cracking the Code.

YOUR EGGS CAME FROM WHERE???
The USDA will tell you...

Check the "Shell Egg" box.
Whole Foods Markets cage-free brand is produced by Hidden Villa Farms...one of the recalled brands. Check your label for plant and date!

if u live in new england buy brown eggs, u buy brown u know they are from a local farm.brown eggs are mainly fron ne farms.
Hey Bryan. In this blog format you can type the entire word. wht do u tnk?
Why would this help when they have a plant in Turner, Maine?

Conidering chickens "poop" from the same orifice that they "lay" from, would it really matter whether chickens were litter trained?

i buy my eggs, take them out of the carton, place them in a basket in my refrigerator and throw the carton away....guess I won't do that anymore.
My thought exactly NotKidding. Good grief.
Great, now that my eggs are gone, they finally list them. I've been poisoned by my milk, peanut butter and now eggs. What next?

death by omelet
suicide by souffle
mort de meringue
The FDA dropped the ball
They could require the chickens to be vaccinated. Costs the Farmer about a penny per dozen. That's about a nickel to the consumer per dozen.
They've Done it in Great Britain & have nearly wiped out the problem. From over 14,000 case to about 600.
