So you don't drink any juices, eat bread, sugar, or any canned or frozen vegetables?
Like I said, I process it myself. If I go to the store, it's for non-edibles. You should join a CSA. I have memberships in four (an orchard, a vegetable and egg farm, a dairy farm, and a beef cattle farm). All my food comes from farms. I juice fresh veggies and fruit in a juicer. I do not eat canned food. I freeze a lot of my veggies from the CSA because I get so much in a basket.
The only "processed" food I eat would be cheese and butter from the dairy farm CSA membership.
No, I do not eat bread. I'm sensitive to the gluten. As a result, I don't eat much sugar (sugar and wheat tend to go hand in hand) but I will have a little sugar in my tea.
What is a CSA? The bread would be hard to give up. We try to make 3 out of 7 meals vegetarian options. I have taught my kids to enjoy black beans, garbanzo beans, kidney beans, cannelli and now we are working on lentils. But I still drink my OJ and apple juice bottled. :)
It's basically a food club where you buy a share the harvest of the farmers. You pay at the beginning of the year. For me, all 4 memberships are 1500 dollars total per year. Which is cheaper than even Walmart, if you compare like, kind, and quality of the produce.
LocalHarvest.org
At that link you can see if there are any CSAs in your area if you want to join. Even if you only join one, it would help your family budget as well as provide great food. And you'd support your local farms.
Not everyone lives in a rural area like I do (the veggie farm and the orchard are 15 minutes from my house!) So I realize that my life style is not feasible for everyone. I think its great that your teaching your kids to enjoy veggies. :)
Actually, the 550 million eggs in the recall were not "processed", they were raw eggs that had been washed only. Maybe a little "processing" is a good thing.
cjstg: Many products of processed food are sold raw or only partly processed. Refrigerated dough is one example. Just because the food is processed doesn't mean its cooked. So contaminated raw product could still make people sick if they don't cook it well, or if they don't exercise food hygine.
Even I have to careful on the farm where there are animals present. Common sense is a big factor in food safety. I hope the food production companies receiving tainted product have some sense, but the lack of it has already been demonstrated on multiple occasions.
JW...I found a very close one thank you. I am going to get more info about it. They had ones for vegetables, meats, honey, flowers etc. Pretty interesting to be truthful. Had no idea they even had these places around here.
Could be one reason why my 11 1/2 yr old looks 14. He is very tall and has a moustache and takes steroids himself for his severe asthma. We haven't been buying organic antibiotic and steroid free birds.
Jwhite...ramble all you want I was VERY informed. Here's an idea Mark you don't want to read his posts then SKIP them. I asked him a question and this is an open vine.
How do you avouid salmonella at a restaurant where food is prepared behind doors? Salmonella can get on lettuce and vegetables. I don't cook my salad. Let me guess, the doctor of Fox News wants ou to cook your restaurant side salad?
ignorant people fuel the fire. do the ignorant people know why restaurants warn people about ordering steak and hamburgers rare???? OH EM GEE because it isn't being cooked long enough to kill the germs...... wait cooking things kills germs? no way i'm a palin ignorant and I say that's bs! only applying antibiotics to the food kills the germs and overuse of the antibiotics is making the germs antibiotic resistant.... OH KNOW!! its a hard world out there when you lead the ignorant path
You know you are in a truly dumbed down society when the population has lost its ability to know how to cook. Most eggs and chickens have solmenella in them as they sit in the store. Cooking them prevents the illness. Now, instead of educating the public on how to cook, we are going to have new government regulations and new irradiation programs to destroy the nutritional value of the food. Another win for the New World Order.
Angie- There is a great book that is called "Healing the New Childhood Epidemics" by Bock and Stauth and it addresses natural (mostly diet) and medical options for helping relieve asthma symptoms. Also, if you are into trying alternative medicine, chiropractic adjustments do wonders for asthma symptoms.
Jwhite...ramble all you want I was VERY informed. Here's an idea Mark you don't want to read his posts then SKIP them. I asked him a question and this is an open vine.
Well said Angie! Jwhite, thanks for the info on CSA's, I'll be looking into that website. You ramble away anytime you want, some of us come to Newsvine to learn different perspectives and ideas!
It sounds to me like the Food industry and the health industry are in cahoots with one another and I am tired of this circus and without wanting being a participant in this circus.
It's like we pay the government to protect us and the public has to raise enough noise in order for our politicians to stop teaming up with corporate America in order to provide that protection.
The issue here is all about allowing a few to profit (Corporate) vs. allowing for individual farmers to profit. That is the wrong way to handle farming and it must stop!!! I'm speaking only of the food industry in which the FDA has allowed companies to get out of control.
FDA if steroids can't be used by the general public then why put them in our food supply???
I really do not believe that any of you are going to burn your eggs at about 170 degrees F for about 10 minutes (to prevent) or about 140 degrees F for about 30 minutes to kill the salmonella.
And as far as pasturization, this does not kill ALL the Bacteria, this attenuates the bacteria (kills most) and does NOT eliminate the Bacteria's toxic waste (excements, poison). This is why pasturized dairy products must still be refrigerated, to slow down the grown of the remaining bacteria.
The only way to actually quickly prevent and kill this kind of thing is like vegetables e coli, a radiation flash (non lingering irradiation). The proof being the Europeans that eat things like irradiated Steak Tartare (usually with a (irradiated) raw egg on top, surrounded by spices and raw vegetables) with their numbers of reported cases of salmonella and e coli infections going down. Unfortunely, about 1 of every 6 Europeans are salmonella carriers (because the foods were not previously irradiated to kill the salmonella and e coli).
Yes, I ate those kinds of things while living at Europe for over 20 years as well as deployments to the "Middle East" and worldwide (by the way if you eat Filipino Balut for the first time get drunk first (and close your eyes) then pop it into your mouth.
And then they sell the contaminated bird poop to feed the cattle and make fertilizer for the vegans vegetables (contamination sucked up inside the vegetables).
After the eggs are pasturized, they will be fine. Never really understood how they could pasturize eggs without cooking them though. Seems like the heat that pasturizes them would be enough to cook them.
"Nothing wrong with tainted eggs!" "Just reprocess them!"........... Then I eat the product...........No thanks.............I'll just leave the little white oblong things for someone else to eat for a while and keep a close eye on the packages for "EGG PRODUCT". Let's see what they (FEDS) do with the CHRONIC PERPETRAITOR who owns the farm......How about we make him eat the Unprocessed ones............They need to close this guy down and send a message. The greatest country on the planet and we can't even keep an eye on what comes out the ass end of a chicken............
The eggs are mixed into a solution (water and chemical thinner), then pasteurized, which causes them to get thicker again.
Like I said in post#1.24. pasteurization does not kill all the bacteria, just the majority. As to why all pasteurized products must be refrigerated after opening, salad dressings, mayonnaise, milk, creams, butters, etc.. Refrigeration slows down the growth of the remaining bacteria colonies.
The really dangerous part about pasteurization is that it removes many of the beneficial qualities also, this can be seen in pasteurized milk with vitamins and proteins having to be artificially put back into the milk. This is why the greedy Chinese businessmen put melamine into the milk, milk powder, etc. to inflate the protein content (fool the nitrogen content tests). With the Chinese milk powder even ending up in "Made In US" Dove Chocolates (when the Dove Chocolate recall occurred, I had just eaten a bunch, I used to eat a bag a week, Dark Chocolate as an antioxidant, just because the bag said "Made In US" I thought they were using powered milk from Oregon, not China.).
The only "safe" method (as the Europeans have proven for over a decade now) is non permanent irradiation. research food irradiation. Prior to getting assigned to the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces, I was a Nuclear Physics/Physiology/Weapons Instructor/Course Writer/Course Evaluator, later trained on Epidemiology (Biological), and on the job training Chemical Weapons (school after the fact). Of course all that changed (SALT, START, SALT II) and I became "Middle East" Qualified, Asymmetric Warfare.
Good Luck-1524703 You know you are in a truly dumbed down society when the population has lost its ability to know how to cook. Now, instead of educating the public on how to cook, we are going to have new government regulations and new irradiation programs to destroy the nutritional value of the food. Actually you are wrong. Normally there are no salmonella inside the egg. It is considered sterile for decades. Now due to hen's horrible cramped living conditions result in sick hens producing salmonella tainted eggs. Google it if you don't believe me.
There are alot of recipes out there that contains raw eggs or yolk. Mayo, over-easy/sunny side up eggs, eggnog, ice cream, etc.......... So people eating those are stupid eh?
bspurloc
ignorant people fuel the fire. do the ignorant people know why restaurants warn people about ordering steak and hamburgers rare???? OH EM GEE because it isn't being cooked long enough to kill the germs...... wait cooking things kills germs? no way i'm a palin ignorant and I say that's bs! only applying antibiotics to the food kills the germs and overuse of the antibiotics is making the germs antibiotic resistant.... Chicken, ground beef, and pork are considered dirty so they have to be cooked all the way.
Steaks are still considered safer and is sterile inside. So cooking it rare or medium is still considered safe because any other contaniments are on the outside. I may be wrong later in the future if laziness of the processing plants and ranchers some how get salmonella inside the steak. They seem to accomplish it with the egg.
This is why pasturized dairy products must still be refrigerated, to slow down the grown of the remaining bacteria.
Yes, a lot of people who scold me for "risking it" by drinking raw milk, don't realize how filthy their pasteurized milk is.
The reason pasturization is so necessary for industrialized dairy farms is because the animals are sitting and standing in their own manure in cramped conditions, they're sickly and stressed. If pasturization weren't used, the milk from these cows would be lethal, more dangerous than the unpasteurized eggs from these dirty egg farms. Do I really want my milk from there? It's only a matter of time before they slip up big time, too.
I get raw milk from the farm, in clean facilities from healthy animals.
I've never gotten sick and it keeps in the fridge almost as long as the pasteurized variety. Flavor-wise, the milk is like a kiss from God. I will never go back.
You know most States have Laws against selling "Raw Milk" to anyone, due to pressure from the dairy lobbyists (factory farms).
Next time you get a chance to try some of the cream skimmed off the milk to make whipped cream. You would not believe what that tastes like.
After the milk is pasteurized this also eliminates many of the enzymes that naturally kill most bacteria and viruses. These enzymes are developed as a natural reaction to prevent the offspring from dying. Like eggs many of the Europeans do NOT wash their eggs, nor refrigerate them as the eggs normally have a antibacterial coating (prevents the chicks from dying in the egg).
It probably won't surprise you how serious about the prohibition they are too. Technically, the farm is giving raw milk away (for a voluntary donation) or you buy "cow shares".
Raw milk is never ever advertised. You ask for it.
*To better quantify the impact of foodborne diseases on health in the United States, we compiled and analyzed information from multiple surveillance systems and other sources. We estimate that foodborne diseases cause approximately 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths in the United States each year. Known pathogens account for an estimated 14 million illnesses, 60,000 hospitalizations, and 1,800 deaths. Three pathogens, Salmonella, Listeria, and Toxoplasma, are responsible for 1,500 deaths each year, more than 75% of those caused by known pathogens, while unknown agents account for the remaining 62 million illnesses, 265,000 hospitalizations, and 3,200 deaths. Overall, foodborne diseases appear to cause more illnesses but fewer deaths than previously estimated.
*the egg problem has the potential to affect or otherwise sicken more people than the gulf spill.
take them off of the market before anyone else gets sick.
create a 6 month moratorium and launch a complete investigation to find out the cause and verify a remedy.
*how much money are these politicians getting paid by the egg producers to look the other way.
*illegal invader workforce
*not able to produce a clean useable product
*ignoring rules and regulations
does the FDA even monitor these egg production facilities.
**do they have rules and regulations or are they just operating "willy nilly" and doing pretty much whatever they want.
if forcing these egg producers to put a product on the shelf that is free of illness causing bacteria is going to cost an extra .50 cents a dozen then i'm all for it.
Jwhite, so you don't think the food you buy in a store comes from a "farm"? Wow, get a clue!
BTW, food borne illnesses are much more common in locally processed foods than in factory processed foods. Look it up if you don't believe me. You eco-foodies are clueless...
You food alarmists are utterly whacko. Look at this guy:
every year 1500 people in the US die from Salmonella, Listeria, and Toxoplasma.
1500 people WOW! What, is that like .000001%? Call out the bleeping national guard, we have a pandemic of food poisoning on our hands!!! Food borne illnesses used to be a leading cause of death in this country and you are complaining about a figure that is less than the number of people who die crossing the street. Do you whackos refuse to cross the street too?
jwhite1083 I find it hard to believe you don't eat ANY processed foods. Bread is processed, frozen vegetables, milk, fruit juice, vegetable juices, orange juice. Not to mention the other things such as cheese, lunch meat, hot dogs etc. So, what do you eat then?
yes you can live very well on non processed food. I have for the past five years since i was diagnosed with cancer. I cook everything from scratch. nothing canned or packaged. organic only and fresh. i have stayed off of meds since my diagnosis. It really works. no junk!!! I believe i am overall healthier than before cancer.
I don't undertand what's so hard to believe. There is life without manufactured food. It is entirely possible. Ever heard of raising your own animals and growing your own vegatables. There is life beyond the grocery store. Get out there a little.
you obviously don't have a good diet. You didn't mention anything green other than "frozen vegetables" which doesn't really count. You ever eat anything fresh and/or green? I run a gallon bag of leafy greens and veggies along with some apples every day through a juicer. Nothing processed. I think the only thing that qualifies as processed would be my "rolled oats" that I make my own granola with. Freezer/box/can babies are in serious trouble health wise.
I have 'mostly' eliminated processed food from my diet for a variety of reasons, with good results. And I get all of my eggs from a local farmer. This salmonella outbreak just reinforces my desire to know where my food is coming from. And I'm not saying my local sources can't be tainted, but at least I know what's up.
Here's another that does not eat processed foods. It's quite possible and at 51 yrs of age I have never felt better in my life. I quit eating processed foods completely one year ago. I eat lots & lots of fresh vegetables. Grocery shopping is easy now as well since you only shop the perimeter of the store. Stay off the aisles and you'll stay away from processed foods. It's that simple! You have to learn new ways of cooking but it is so worth it.
I live in the city in a duplex...yeah I got chickens running around in my back yard. Are you serious? Why do I need to have my own animals when I can go to the store and pick up chicken? And as for eating fresh I love fresh veggies and fruit. In fact I just cooked up a big huge pot of cabbage vegetable soup. Now, the cabbage of course was fresh as the carrots, potatoes, onions but the green beans were no salt added. I do not like fresh green beans they are to crunchy for my taste. I like them kinda squishy. We eat tons of salad with garbanzo beans and olives and fresh vegetable. Just picked up some serioulsy beautiful apples can't wait to put into my salad w/ walnuts and a vingarette dressing. But clearly there is a time when you need things of convience. If I want corn for dinner I pull bag of frozen or canned corn out. I am not running to the store everytime I want corn on the cob and cleaning it off the cob. We are not allowed to plant gardens where I live so it's the supermarket of friends who have gardens that fill our fridge.
I think everyone eats food that is at least somewhat pre-processed. What matters is the level of pre-processing. If it comes in a can, jug, box, jar, whatever, it will have some sort of processing. But canned food is not all bad. I use canned tomatos and tomato sauce in my pasta from a box (higher grade pasta) I just make the sauce myself rather than use canned sauce that is just warmed up. Even meats are pre-processed, usually by someone other than the end consumer. I don't know about anyone else, but I have a difficult time storing a whole cow carcass in my fridge and cutting off the parts I want to eat when I want to eat them.
Have you ever head of wheat berries? What about "sprouted bread"? We grind the wheat berries and make our own breads. WE have our own sour dough starter. We sprout the wheat berries, grind it up and make a cracker-like bread with the sprouts - yummy and full of nutrients - real nutrients, not sprayed-on vitamins.
We raise our own meat, eggs, dairy - make our own butter, cheeses, yogurt. I have a (body builder) customer that buys egss and eats them RAW - never has a problem.
We have our own fruit trees, vegetable, berry, spice and herb gardens. We can and juice from our own gardens.
You should really talk to a local farmer that follows organic and natural principles. You may see that there is an entirely different world out there. One that is not reliant on the supermarket chains, or the "food manufacturers". Came home the other night and we picked fresh tomatoes, zucchini, oregano and used some of our garlic and onions - put it all in a pan and simmered it - we called it "dinner".
Thank you Gavin....I bought a fresh turkey recently and guess what it was PROCESSED with some kind of stuff to help flavor it and retain the color. If i want to make fresh salsa I am not going to cut up all the tomatoes I will open a can of canned and enjoy them.
Kyfarmer...I would give anything to be able to have a garden. Last year we did a small container garden on my patio for roma and grape tomatoes and various peppers. The blasted neighbor kids squished them and threw them everywhere. I think it would be fun to do more. If I want zuchinni which I love I go to the supermarket. I try to support our local vendors but have had very dry weather in MD so all our crops looks terrible. I wouldn't have a clue how to make bread. I buy whatever is on sale and sometimes I can convince my kids to eat wheat bread. I was surprised they ate my cabbage soup yesterday. I was pretty proud of that.
I urge everyone to buy eggs produced only from cage-free hens fed without hormones or antibiotics. It's the only humane thing to do. Extremely low to non-existent risk for samonella poisoning.
Any chicken can harbor salmonella. The risk is not any lower in cage-free chicken eggs or chickens. It happens in big farms, it happens in small farms. Salmonella is considered endemic in commercially grown poultry in the US. The term cage-free is a commercial marketing term that has nothing to do with the quality of the product. http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/confinement_farm/facts/cage-free_vs_battery-cage.html
All chickens are raised hormone free in the US. It is against the law to use growth hormones in poultry. The three largest poultry producers do not use antibiotics, unless there is a disease outbreak that affects the birds. Salmonella does not sicken the birds.
Have you ever been in a cage-free chicken house? I have. It is horrendous. The chickens are wall-to-wall and the smell will knock you out. There are dead chickens on the floor because of the humans who walk around to feed them sometimes step on a chicken, especially when they are really small. A caged facility is gross too. The main difference is that the cage-free animals can stretch their wings. Not a bad thing if you are a chicken. On the other hand the cage-free birds have their beaks burned off to prevent cannibalism. A painful experience if you are a chicken. The raising of animals for food is never a pretty picture. Since most of us never come into contact with the real thing, it is easy for the large manufacturers to use marketing to get us to pay more for a product. Whether you choose to consume animals and animal products don't be fooled into thinking that animals are having a great life. They are not. BTW: I used to be a vegetarian. I now eat meat, and I refuse to be manipulated by these corporations.
i eat fresh fruit, don't do dairy because i have a reaction, eat grains no bread, lots of vegetables. When i stopped eating red meat my arthritis stopped hurting. if i want juice i press it myself or eat fresh fruit. there are a lot of things you can buy that are not processed. i don't eat anything from cans because of the BPH as well as the salt. i started a small herb, tomato and lettuce garden on my balcony outside my apartment and the tomatoes finally have a taste to them. what a difference. I only wish i could plant more and the season would be longer. just think our children are hitting puberty at such a young age maybe it is all the crap they put in our food, the hormones, GMO foods the fertilizers, sugars and salts. Sorry not very healthy. It really does not take that long to prepare from scratch. In winter I make a big pot of vegetable and bean or grain soup and have that for a meal and then lunch for work. Most people own a slowcooker put it on before you go to work on low and there you are. I checked out the big box farms and couldn't even fathom eating meat. If you don't want to give it up go to your local farmer. join the 100 mile club, they are everywhere. Have you checked out the chicken factories? AWFUL!!!!
I get a kick out of the paranoia over "processed" food. Do you know that sometimes all that means is it's heated????
Feel free to have some non-processed milk with all those live bacteria which naturally occurs in it. Pasteurization is nothing more then heating the milk but it is also processing.
I think we need to be a little more specific when we talk about "processed" food. Some processing is definately good for you.
(oh and I like my milk homogenized too)
I would love to see a list of the most popular market purchased foods and see exactly how they are "processed", not the paranoid terror list but the most popular items. I bet in most cases the processing is something simple and innocuous.
i urge everyone to stop being panzy idiots and eat what is out there so you stop producing kids that cant handle drinking well water etc.... the more the idiots of society shy away from harmful things to the body the more people that grow non resistant to them... tad and soccer moms are slowly killing off the human population with their moronic scares......
I think we need to be a little more specific when we talk about "processed" food. Some processing is definately good for you.
You make a valid point. "Processed food" is usually code for any food in a bag, box, tub, or tube loaded with additives and preservatives. Processed food gets ingredients from multiple sources and is handled by many people.
Unprocessed food is changed very little from its natural state, and comes as direct as possible to your dinner table insuring that few people handle it other than yourself.
I personally, "Process" cucumbers by pickling and "process" garlic by roasting. Only two people handle these items, the farmer and I.
I'm also happy you mentioned "unprocessed" milk. There's a growing movement among hippies like me that milk is not so scary when it comes from uncrowded humane conditions, and we get our milk unpasturized or "raw". You can only get this direct from the farm though. See my post above about CSA.
You ever eat anything fresh and/or green? I run a gallon bag of leafy greens and veggies along with some apples every day through a juicer.
Has been processed, unless you grew those yourself. Like bug spray, Monsanto genetic engineered seeds, etc., almost forgot alar sprayed on apples (apples are not normally that glossy, sometimes covered in paraffin wax.).
You think the water they use to wash the fruits and vegetables prior to interstate shipment is just water or even that "clean" (recycling requires constant changing of filters). With many States requiring a minimizing of non native vectors (insects) moving interstate (sometimes wipes out native plants, and agriculture.). How do you think they "scrub" all the insects, dirt, etc. from the vegetables without bruising them. These chemicals must be strong enough to get rid of slugs (as vectors for diseases like Leptospirosis, Escherichia coli, Angiostrongyliasis, and there are the numerous viruses.). Realize that vegetables naturally suck up liquids into themselves.
This is what happens when you are trained in Epidemiology and Microbiology (Medical School required). Do I really panic, nope, I will continue to eat what I like (knowing the risks). If I was dumb enough to eat stuff, I am stupid enough to suffer the consequences, like when I got amoebic dysentery (almost died, extreme dehydration), we live with the Afghans, eat what they do, build schools and medical clinics for them, dig water wells, protect them, hunt the Taliban, etc.. Their amoebic dysentery is extremely antibiotic resistant, I was walking around with a IV filled with strong broad spectrum antibiotic/antiviral for a week, and this still did not help. Later the Afghans used a homeopathic cure, and I got well, guess they did not want their US Military Officer "guest" to die on them. We already tried a controlled test, giving some the Afghan homeopathic solution, some the IVs antibiotics/antivirals, and some placebos. Usually within 72 hours those that received the Afghan solution are well, some of the others receiving the IVs and placebos ended up evacuated recovering about a month later. The Afghans still will not show us what they put into their cure.
jwhite... while I appreciate your point of view on this, you know I'd rather have someone else pickle my cumcumbers. :-)
To be a bit sarcastic .... should I build my own car or perhaps brew my own beer or maybe build my own computer or TV. No we all specialize in something and I'd rather someone else produce my food and other things that are not my specialty (though making my own beer sounds good). I'm a IT specialist not a farmer (or much of a cook).
As long as I'm comfortable with the "process" and the ever so minor risks involved then someone else can do it for me.
I can appreciate that. My grandmother learned how to process her own food at home, pickling, canning, drying, smoking. You name it she did it! But by the time she mastered all that...
She was a grandmother!!!
It takes time and energy. And these days, many people don't have either. So going completely self-reliant when it comes to food is not for everyone. (In fact, if someone does try to do it themselves without the proper instructions, such as with canning, serious illness, like botulism can result. See my earlier post, I don't eat canned food, I don't care WHO it's from.)
History has proven that species that find their niches and the niches (specialization) disappears so do they.
you know I'd rather have someone else pickle my cumcumbers
pickling salt, sea salt, clean water, sterile container with lid, a clean plate to use as a weight, cucumbers and a couple of days.
same way you make pickled eggs (from boiled eggs). Kim Chee from cabbage or cucumbers, add chili peppers, ginger, garlic and onions after pickled.
By the way if you ever get to Germany, go to the Andechs Monastery (Kloster) and drink the non pasturized beer (dark beer, double bock). And you tell me if you cannot taste the difference between a pasturized (piss water American beer) and the German Beers (note the German beers brewed or shipped to US are required by US Laws to be pasturized).
should I build my own car or perhaps brew my own beer or maybe build my own computer or TV.
Already did three of the four, not the TV.
No we all specialize in something
You would never make it here at Afghanistan with the Teams (decades of training to do each others jobs). Everything we want is usually Improvised thru Innovation (two of the "I"'s of real life or death Teams, not Sports "teams" with sports teams stupidly saying there are no "I"'s in Team.). This inprovisation thru innovation included me having to demote one of the Team Members for building a wheat grain still (ethanol)(double distilled to nearly 100%, alcohol poisoning) and Islamic Laws.
david ...... I do admire those people who can be that independent and self sufficient but what I am saying is it's not necessary in every day life to be so. I have more then just my IT skills, I am a former ambulance chief and medic (never thought a guy with a Comp Sci degree would be sticking needles). If you want do prepare your own food, build your own car fine but no one can do everything we do need to depend on others just like you and your team. I have no problem taking a chance on "processed" food or buying my car and having someone else service it. My family is from the south of Germany, I do know good beer and homemade wine and hand made clothing and furniture and hey a cow behind the door in the hallway (the barn was part of the house, just had to stick that in there it shocked me as a kid).
We all have our priorities and I think there is a paranoia about things that are processed and I don't think just because something is bought in the local super market makes it bad. I do buy and eat fresh food whenever it's convenient.
Somehow I sent this conversation in the wrong direction ... sorry.
KayT: ...The term cage-free is a commercial marketing term that has nothing to do with the quality of the product.
I beg to differ with your statement. Don't think that a stressed animal is not transferring unnecessary hormones into the egg she produces which then are transferred to the consumer; and I state without fear of contradiction that battery hens are EXTREMELY stressed, throughout their whole lives.
It is against the law to use growth hormones in poultry.
Again, you're mistaken in this statement. Growth hormones are used to enlarge turkey breasts to such an absurd extent that the poor animal cannot stand without falling over. I have see this deplorable situation and it is completely disgusting what is allowed to happen in the name of "capitalism" at the expense of so many innocent creatues. These beings must give up their lives that others can enjoy...Thanksgiving dinner, for example. Is it right that they be tortured prior to being gruesomely beheaded? I don't think so.
I have been a vegetarian for 43 years and have regretted my choice for not a second. During that time, I have not had one single ailment.
I lived at Germany for over 20 years. Graduated from Gymnasium at Stuttgart.
When I was later Stationed there as a US Military Officer. I lived above a Bakerie, the owner's husband a German Officer died during WWII. Every morning about 3 am I could smell the fresh baked breads, pastries and cakes. On the week ends when I was not working she taught me how to bake, her version of Sacher Torte, Swartzwalder Torte, Berliners, French like pastries, Kasekuchen (my favorite), Dampfnudeln, etc.. Down the street was a Gastehaus, nicknamed "papas" by the US Military, he taught me how to make Rouladen, Chateaubriand, Goulash soup, French Onion Soup, Spaetzle, Kartoffel Knodel, etc..
(never thought a guy with a Comp Sci degree would be sticking needles).
Never do really know, do we. As being US Military (Asymmetric Warfare) most of us were trained as Physicians Assistants and do weekly Medical Assistance Visits to the Afghan Villages (we carry a full field surgical pack with each Team). Unfortunately, most of the time it is stitching up stumps for things cut off by the Taliban. In post#2.19, I injected the antibiotic/antiviral (broadspectrum) into the "bag", stuck myself with the IV, left arm, strapped the bag to the side of my neck. This is what we are trained to do to ourselves and for others.
(By the way I'm all for homemade libration)
Honestly, sometimes we think that MREs (Meals Rejected by Everyone, the ultimate processed food (?)) are delicacies. Fortunely, the US Military has the US Military Veternary Corps to insure the stuff is save to eat. Unfortunely, logistically we eat what the Afghans eat and drink, everything we have we carry (ok, the mules (animals) and horses (animals) and M1030s (motorcycles) carry them).
Just thinking about a big old roasted barbecuedpork (simmering in the pot with the sauce for a couple of days) sandwich.......and a big liter of real German Beer. Both being illegal in Islamic Countries. You can image what the Deutsch Bundeswehr Commando to my south think (I visit them every so often).
Sorry, just makes all this stuff going on stateside seem trivial. We are more than likely going to get killed from lead poisoning (getting shot by the enemy or our own US Military Conventional Warfare Forces) or a bomb from a USAF Aircraft.
Got to ask yourself about all those growth hormones with female children now growing breasts.
Growth hormones are used to enlarge turkey breasts to such an absurd extent that the poor animal cannot stand without falling over.
Still would like to have Turkey Dinners for Thanksgiving, Christmas Dinner, and New Years dinner. I had to buy Roast Duck Dinners from the British SAS for my men and women, otherwise they would have ended up with canned ham, powdered potatoes, and canned green beans (I still wonder who the idiot was that sent f**king canned ham (pork) to an Islamic Country). Guess the news media does not like to tell people this kind of SH!T, with the April 2009 Defense Budget Cuts Funds were diverted from "sustainment" (food, maintenance, ammunition, weapons retrofits, etc.) to Congress's pet projects (US Military Equipment manufactured in their States (Jobs)). Yes, everyone else (where the News Media were at) got Turkey Dinners (US Military on one year rotations, Kandahar AFB, Kabul), and the thousands of US Civilians (Politicians, Political Appointees, Interns) had full blown Banquets including French Champagne and Russian Caviar (now you know where your Billions of US Taxpayer Dollars are going), the US Civilians have these parties almost every week at their Disneyland Resort and Spa (no Afghans no US Military allowed, unless invited).
You can understand why after being here consecutive tours (years) we just want to leave.
Sorry, just makes all this stuff going on stateside seem trivial.
I don't know, david. While your dangerous circumstances is more immediate, millions of people are dying from what they're eating here, Stateside. So many of my relatives were dying from complications from diabetes, heart attack and stroke, that it seems like we were under fire from an unknown attacker. Those of mine that survived lost limbs, mental ability from strokes, and even their vision. I wouldn't be surprised if all the lead in toys from China, the chemicals loaded in cereals, and bacterial infection found in otherwise fresh food won't later be regarded as a kind of chemical and biological warfare.
I want to say thank you so much for what you are doing for all of us here... wish I could hug ya tight, Buddy! hearing from you all out there ALWAYS reminds me of how lucky I am to be an American...
as far as the crazy eggs here, visiting my sister here in a lil town in Iowa. Heard about the farms, threw out the eggs, and enjoying family time with nieces and nephews and happy I have the chance to!
Take care, David! Someone is looking for you back home!
The FDA is using this opportunity to acquire more power and control:
Food and Drug Administration chief Margaret Hamburg said Monday her agency is limited by law to a mostly reactive stance on food safety and argued that it needs a more "preventive approach."
Giving a series of network interviews in the wake of the egg and salmonella breakout, Hamburg said the FDA is taking the issue "very, very seriously." At the same time, she said Congress should pass pending legislation that would provide her agency with greater enforcement power, including new authority over imported food.
Something they should have done long ago. Previous administrations have eviscerated this agency to the point where it is detrimental to the health and safety of the public.
Just what we need, another government agency trying to control our lives. Can't anyone take responsibility for their own actions anymore? If you eat half raw eggs, you takes your chances. If you want to eat half raw eggs, either keep your own chickens, or insist on processed eggs and pay the difference. But we don't need a gov't agency giving us have only one choice and consequently paying more for it. Personally, I will buy cheaper, unprocessed eggs as long as I can and continue to cook them. They taste better and are a lot less messy that way.
No, you can fry the egg to cook all the way through, you could poach the egg and it be cooked all the way through, how about a hard boiled egg? Angie, do you know anything, anything, about food?
Of course I know about food. Been cooking quite well for many years. I don't "fry" anything and well I wouldn't know how to poach an egg and I think hardboiled eggs are for salads. I like an over medium eggs with toast. Yummy.
Let me guess danangel, you're one of those people who likes to sound angry about "Big Government" getting in our face, while at the same time I bet you have no problem when the US Department of Energy regulates power companies, or the National Weather Service forecasts the weather, or when the National Institute of Standards and Technology tells you what time to set your watch to, or when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tells you what cars are safe, or when the DOT does construction on the roads, or when the Environmental Protection Agency tries to keep corporations from poisoning the ground water, or any of the dozens of times a day a government agency does something for you you can't do yourself.
Yeah, I have no problem with the FDA getting more power if it will stop someone like Jack DeCoster, the man responsible for the horrible conditions present at the main facility, from getting rich by cutting corners and risking other peoples lives again.
Sounds pretty fatalistic to me and no, I do not think it is the federal gov't's job to do any of those things. Those are state responsibilities. As far as DeCoster goes, existing state laws will take care of him without big brother stepping in.
1) The National Weather Service is rarely as accurate as the local radio station
2) State DOT takes care of all but interstate highways, which are deathtraps
3) States determine the time used (not all use daylight saving time)
4) State bureaus can and do perform the same functions as the EPA, for less cost
5) the USDofE oversteps its own mandates and energy costs continue to rise.
Conclusion: If the federal gov't would actually do what it was set up to for, Protect Our Borders, and leave the rest to state and local gov't, we would all be better off for it.
You are (apparently) wholly ignorant of what those departments do and how they function.
The "local weather station" gets its information from the National Weather Service. What do you think they do, look out the window?
Why are they deathtraps, because of the speed limits, because of the quality of the roads? Or do you feel because you personally don't like them they shouldn't be maintained or used? I don't see the states offering to take care of them.
I wasn't talking about Daylight Saving Time, do the states maintain the atomic clock which is used to determine the correct time throughout the world?
Nice generalization about the EPA, care to back that (or a single other thing you've said) up with facts?
Unfortunately, the FDA has been neutered over the years. We were sold a bill of goods that corporations will do the right thing if allowed to proceed with no regulations. Over and over again we have seen that corporations will do anything to increase profits, even if they kill people. Face it - without the FDA you wouldn't have even known about this latest outbreak of salmonella. The FDA does need more power to enforce the laws and to recall dangerous products. In this case, they identified a problem. They brought it to the attention of the egg producer. The company continued to sell eggs. The only thing that the FDA could do was to inform congress and to announce a recall which they have no power to enforce. All they could do was sit back and let the pressure on the company build through public awareness.
I realize that some people could see this as a state's issue or an FDA powergrab, but I disagree. Those eggs were sold in many states. It affected the health of US citizens, not just the residents of Iowa. And if a local or state government could have swept this under the rug to protect a business within their borders, I have no doubt that they would have. If a company is polluting a river in a particular state, and the water flows downstream into another state, who is going to protect the groundwater in the second state without the EPA. The powers in the constitution allow the US congress to step in when inter-state commerce is involved. That was a good call. Without a national vision, we are no longer the United States, we become individual governments with 50 different rules in matters that affect us all.
Do you eat at a restaurant? How did they prepare your meal? Did you know that salmonella can get onto uncooked lettuce and cold foods? Better never go to Ryans or any food bar.
Face it, the FDA has a purpose and that is to keep the US from being a third woprld country where noone eats out for fear of diseases.
I don't "fry" anything . I like an over medium eggs with toast. Yummy.
How do you make the over medium eggs if not by "frying". Just curious.
and well I wouldn't know how to poach an egg
If you know how to boil water, it is easy, the trick is to let the water cool (still steaming) from a boil (DO NOT ADD SALT TO THE WATER), then slip the egg in slowly and put the lid on the pot. The "perfect" poached egg is usually when you cut into it the yoke oozes out all over the toast. Takes a lot of practice to make "perfect" poached eggs (without a thermometer). Of course this still does not address what others have posted "fully" cooked eggs, see post#1.24 about burnt offerings (170 degrees for 10 minutes.).
David.....I put my in a skillet with pam spray....is that considered frying? I don't use oils, butters or any kind of grease to cook my eggs. The only thing I do use in my pan is olive oil to saute if reciepe calls for it. But I don't bread anything and fry in vegetable oil, peanut oil, sunflower etc etc. Oh how I do miss a good piece of fried chicken but just don't eat it. I switched to turkey burger and I picked up some bison to try out.
You asked about nicotine. I think I read that if you smoke a lot of cigarettes high in nicotine you can get a lot of money from one of the tobacco companies either just before or just after you die.
Nicotine promotes the growth of cancer cells. It's a great combination... the chemicals in tobacco smoke cause normal cells to become cancer cells and the nicotine helps the cancer grow and spread....
So does inhaling the air from the exhausts of laser printers and copy machines.
Or if a CFL or Florenscent Tube breaks (mercury as a neuro toxin), this is NOT an urban myth (mercury content in CFLs, this is why many countries use LEDs instead of CFLs and banned CFLs. This is why most CFLs are Made In China, mercury content, banned manufacturing in most Countries). The mercury in the CFLs, Florescent Tubes is what makes the bulb work after the mercury is superheated and vaporized. Most CFLs have .5 to 2 grams of mercury, .5 of vaporized mercury would fill a room 10 feet by 20 feet in seconds (leak between glass and ceramic body), everything in the room would have to be gutted including the paint on the walls and disposed of as hazardous waste (unless you want this in your great grandchildrens water).
What is really funny (NOT). Is the EPA not wanting to panic people. Research heavy metal contamination and decontamination US Military (realize that this is the bare minimum, to continue US Military Operations).
Nothing like scaring the pants off the public!! First the tainted eggs and what companies to avoid buying and now not knowing which brand of cookies and other items the eggs are going to be used in.
Just wait till your pets end up on the floor belly up with their legs sticking up in the air and stiff as a board. Then panic.
Also do NOT eat any raw cookie dough. (the processed eggs).
The only other option is to recook, rebake everything before you eat them.
Did not mention before the surfaces can also be sterilized using UV (Ultra Violet) Light (certain wavelengths) that is only the surfaces (not inside the food).
If you got problems with bed bugs, buy cheap isopropyl alcohol ($2.91, like large bottle from Walmart, 91%) get a spray bottle while you are at Walmart ($1.28, near the brooms and mops).
And spray everyplace you think the bedbugs might be. This will keep their heads down (away from you).
You can always also buy Hot Shot or Raid unscented foggers. Say if you are going to be at a hotel. Change into a swim suit, pop the fogger (one can), put in on a chair near the bed(s), go to the pool have a few drinks, and come back a couple of hours later. If there is central air or heating you will have to block the vents.
Here (Afghanistan) we wear Large Dog Flea and Tick Collars on the belt loops of our uniforms. Almost every month you have to change them for new ones. Two months ago we ran out and had a lice (or something worse) outbreak, we sprayed ourselves with insecticides with no results, and ended up shaving off ALL our hair (and I mean ALL hair),they lay their eggs attached to your hairs like superglue. Then we coated ourselves with a mixture of cooking oil and insecticide just to keep them away.
Excellent, just go on being a dumbed-down moron consumer that "Trusts" a corrupt, de-regulated industry that didn't seem to be too concerned about putting 550 million tainted eggs into the food supply in the first place.
I was diagnosed with Salmonella on Monday. I did not eat undercooked eggs. The eggs were scrambled dry. However, I did handle the eggs while cracking them and while cleaning up the kitchen. Must have missed that hand washing thing after throwing the shells in the trash.
I do a lot of the cooking around my house, and I've been aware of the potential for salmonella contamination in both poultry and eggs for a very long time. If you ever saw how chicken is processed, you'd understand why.
I haven't quit eating either eggs or chicken; I'm just cautious. I wash my hands and apply hand sanitizer after touching either eggs or raw poultry. When I cook eggs, although I prefer them "over medium" I cook them through. When cooking chicken, I make a point to clean any utensils (knives, forks) in hot soap and water, wipe them down with either a bleach based cleanser or hand sanitizer, then rinse again in hot water to remove any chemical residue. I NEVER use the same utensils to remove chicken from a pan that I use to cut raw chicken or turn partially cooked chicken while it is cooking unless I clean them as described above first. I'm also careful to wipe down any potentially contaminated countertops or cutting boards with bleach and then wipe or rinse them in hot water to remove chemical residue.
Once you get used to the routine, it's really not that burdensome. We eat chicken far more often than red meat, though we rarely eat eggs. When we do they are usually in the form of omlettes that are cooked through. I doubt that the extra precautions add more than 5 minutes to food prep time. And while they may not protect us 100%, I think they will go a long way towards minimzing our exposure.
Agreed. Someone finally mentioned BLEACH. Bleach is the one thing that will kill most bacteria (including MRSA), viruses (including HIV).
Also if you can help it. DO NOT WASH YOUR HANDS IN THE KITCHEN SINK. If you get a UV light (makes gran negative pathogens glow, the one's that will make you sick or kill you) you will see that by washing your hands in the sink you just splashed the bacteria all over the place, about a two foot radius (same reason you close the toilet cover before flushing, six foot contamination radius), that includes splashing them on the dishes in a drying rack near the sink and if you have any sponges, scrubbers, etc. they end up full of them (constantly moist place).
In the case of the bleach, I use a cheap spray bottle (Made In USA) from Walmart filled with a mixture of bleach and water. I use this to clean the sink, the facet handles, front of counter (where I lean against), counter tops, etc.. I also use this to spray on the cutting boards to soak before I wash them with HOT soapy water.
If you think this is paranoid, just go buy a cheap UV light like:
just do not eat before you do this, so that you do not throw up all over the place.
I carry a one quart canteen full of bleach, here at Afghanistan (can also be used to purify water (kill) bacteria, viruses, cysts, etc. after boiling).
David - quick trick re: sponges and scrubbers. Throw them in the microwave (if non-metallic scrubbers) and nuke them for about 2 or 3 minutes. That is typically sufficient to raise them above the boiling point of water through and through, which is also sufficient to kill bacteria.
I did that when I was stateside; but, after nuking them in the microwave for two to three minutes, I looked at them with a UV and they still glowed (gran negative). Just to make sure I got a brand new one (3M) scrubber, the white parts (nylon mess) glowed but the other part (sponge inside) did not. The old one (that I threw into the microwave) the sponge part glowed (chunks of food caught in them and growing bacteria).
I started soaking all of those in bleach and putting them into a dry container on the side of the sink. After using them I soak them in bleach and later ring them out. They stopped glowing under UV light (Blacklight).
The thing that really pissed me off was everytime my sister, her husband, my brother, his wife visit they use that kitchen sink to wash their hands before eating. They really do not know how to cook, and really like what I make (cook, bake, broil, grill, fry, etc.). And then they wipe their hands on one of the dish towels (to dry the dishes). You can image the expression on my face. After they leave I am scrubbing down the whole f**king house, spraying a bleach solution (kitchen, bathrooms), throwing all the dish towels, bathroom towels, etc. into the washing machine.
Most people do not realize that one of the places with the most germs (bacteria, viruses) is actually the kitchen and not the bathrooms, especially if they feed their pets in the kitchen.
I know this might sound paranoid, when I prepare eggs, I get a bowl, crack the eggs into the bowl, throw the egg shells into the trash, then wash my hands in the bathroom, then come back and cook the eggs (no salmonella on my hands or anything in the kitchen by transference from the egg shells.).
The other way to kill most germs is osmosis, same way old fashioned pickling works. All the moisture is sucked out of the germs killing them. There are still some bacteria and viruses that will just go dormant when this happens so osmosis is not foolproof.
You can image how I feel being here at Afghanistan, we eat out of a large common bowl of rice, another of meat (whatever type), scooped spoon or hands into the bowl in front of us, with the flat bread also on a common plate (you use your hands and break off a piece).
The other thing is many people believe that soap is a disinfectant. In order for a soap to actually KILL most bacteria and viruses, the soap would have to be base (like salt), quick lime (old fashioned soap) or acidic (like Hydrochloric acid, bleach is 5%). The entire concept of soap being to make the surface too slippery for the bacteria and viruses to stick and get washed off (down the drain) by water.
The exception to caustic (base or acid) methods is alcohol, but that take complete immursion for 10 minutes or more, evaporation defeating that method. The only thing that occurs when we swab someone with an alcohol swab prior to immunization, is that this wipes the dirt, some of the bacteria and viruses and body oil away (does not kill them).
We could also be confident that vaccinating the hens would have exactly the same effect as it did in Britain, virtually eliminating salmonella outbreaks for less than a penny per dozen eggs... but the FDA dare not actually do their damned job, lest they be accused of the most heinous of all governmental sins: regulating.
Americans are already getting all the animal medications they can handle- do you think these hens don't wind up in some processed can of chicken- more meds, more meds- that's one of the reasons 300 pounders are so common in this country- that plus all the low fat- no fat crap.
The FDA doesn't do their job because they don't have the resources or people to do it. It's like expecting one teacher to teach 500 grammer school kids with one blackboard ond one piece of chalk. Do you realize that the budget they have for "inspecting" produce coming in by truck through the Mexican border means that they can only test one or two items in one out of every twenty trucks! I'm not picking on the Mexicans either - the inspection level of produce coming in by container loads on ships is far lower.
You can't have it both ways - you can't have small government and expect it to protect you. The States are so strapped they are not even trying to protect us from "big business" or foreign governments. Who took care of the melatonin scare - the Feds - not the states! I know because I sell equipment to these labs and I know what they can and can't do to protect us. Give me more FDA and more CDC any day of the week.
I agree 200%...every time I read the news, some agency is cutting back on workers so much it's affecting us all. FDA should have more control over things... Give them a chance to do their jobs.
As far as that low-fat no-fat deal, I can't help but laugh, because while friends and family are getting plumper with that so-called "diet", Im doing just fine without it... yup! I can see all my toes!
Pasteurization does not kill off nutrients! The only vitamin killed by heat is vitamin c, there is no vitamin c in eggs. The heat processing will completely kill all salmonella, this is an excellent solution. And if you decide to eat raw or partially cooked eggs, you are just asking for trouble. If all the shell eggs involved in the recall had bee4n cooked properly, no one would have gotten sick!
First of all lets look at this with a cool clear head.
The chicken farmer is he contributing to a major political party that is in power right now and if so then the agency wil not force him or the company to distroy the eggs.
Most assuradly he is. I lived in Iowa, this guy is a bad seed. Contaminated the largest water table in Iowa, treats his workers like slaves and contaminates the food supply. While he may have hedged his bets and spent some cash on Dems, he is most definately a Republican, which is why he's been getting away with this for so long. The locals don't want to cross him, he brings in money and give out a small pitance for charity to keep them off his back.
He's a Republican? Where do you get that? The only direct political contributions that family made were to Hillary Clinton in 2008 and it was only $4,600.
The other one mentioned is to the United Egg Association and you can google where their $$ goes too. It goes to both parties. They donated a total of $10,000 to that.
He's paid $2 million in fines when Robert Reich (R) called him out on running "sweatshops". He paid $1.5 million in fines to a group of women from Mexico claiming sexual harassment.
That took 10 seconds to find on a 3 word google search. Everything done wrong isn't because that person doesn't vote like you.
Doesn't do a damn thing for the inhumane and utterly despicable treatment of the hens. Personally, I think the way animals are treated and "processed" will come back to haunt humans in horrible ways that we don't yet know. What goes around comes around...so they say. Animals included
Isn't that the truth. The way the animals in the food system are treated is nothing short of despicable. It makes one wonder who are the real animals. I can definitely say it's us humans.
One thing to remember about all animal agriculture is that it is ultimately unprofitable in the long-run to mistreat animals. Even stress from moving the animals causes weight loss and disease in some species. So unless you are a greedy SOB you will treat your animals as well as possible (short of treating them better than members of your own species I would hope).
all animal agriculture is that it is ultimately unprofitable in the long-run to mistreat animals
Then why are they mistreating animals? You can watch undercover video's of the treatment of animals at slaughter houses and hen houses (youtube or google 'meet your meat'), you can watch the DVD 'Food Inc', you can read books like 'Fast Food Nation' or 'Slaughterhouse', where the authors have interviewed workers at slaughter houses about how the animals are treated. These aren't 'faked' stories or video's - they are real.
i think large Agribusiness figures, we'll lose a few thousand animals by our treatment, but in the end, we're still profitable. Animals in their minds aren't breathing, living creatures entitled to humane treatment and a quick, painless death - they are 'production units'.
Totally agree. People are letting their emotions get in the way of reason here. This is the reason we have been boiling water for centuries, to kill batcteria in the water so we may drink it. Distilled water anyone? Can't do chemistry accurately without it.
Anyway, the people who say they are appauled, just quite frankly are not sensible. If you can kill off the bacteria and save the eggs for use, then do it. Otherwise it's a HUGE waste of resources and money. Resources are finite. So is the planet.
American's in general (not saying all) will over react to anything they hear. The press will make it seem like the world has ended and Americans will eat it up and spew out the toxic crap afterwards... over reacting and condeming the company that produced a product.
I get all my eggs from my parents chickens, but there is a very good chance I'll get salmonella from them. Am I going to stop eating eggs... No. I like eggs, like I like chicken and beef and pork and all other animal products.
I could get just about any germ or bacteria from any veg or fruit I eat too, but that's the chance I take by eating.
Organic doesn't mean better, it just means you might find a bug in it... like my parents corn.
We as American's need to stop over reacting and stop trying to kill all the germs in the world. Otherwise we've compromised our own immune systems and will more then likely be more worse for the ware.
I think we just need to face the fact that the FDA is completely useless, generally in bed with who they are supposed to be checking on, and we are at the mercy of big Agra producers. They could care less about any health concerns. No matter what they may be fined, they still make mega-profits, so the risk of unsafe conditions is worth it. Unless we can go back to actual small family farms, this is the way it will be.
Bush? Are you referring to the 2007 amendments that gave them more funding? You do realize that had to pass Congress when Democrats had 60 seats, right?
Recite After Me, this is the 21st Century, this is 2010, President Obama is the US President.
So ask yourself why is President Obama not fixing the problem (what he was hired to do). You think he does not eat eggs or egg products. How about researching why he does not fix the problem, do not blame me for your research results (I already know the answers, reasons why not fix the problem).
That's what they said in Chicago back in 1985 when a dairy sent out milk that made it out with the bacteria still intact. So pasturization does not always work.
I believe that the problem was that the pastuerization process was not followed correctly. The problem was not the process itself, but not following the process correctly.
You are correct it is NOT rocket science. Rockets are stupid (launched on a deflection and azimuth), missiles are smart (Guidance Navigation and Control).
So it is Missile Science.
How many places have "clean water" (no cysts, lead, cadmium, arsenic, hydrogen cyanide, pesticides, fecal matter, etc.). When you brush your teeth, wash your hands, shower or bathe, wash everything, etc. where do you think all of those "contaminates" in the "clean water" go. Unless you have a entire house multi filter water system or maybe a water distiller, eventually it all ends up inside YOU.
I have a friend who has been a Raw Vegan for over 5 years. Occasionally he'll cheat (a handful of dry roasted nuts, or some packaged juice,) but he eats lots of salad, raw nuts, and is pefectly happy. I couldn't do it but he swears by it.
im sure if Americans never cut corners or skimped on safety sure nothing would be wrong with it..... but this is America..... these ceos cant be trusted with our safety all they care about if the bottom line, and that isn't the consumer. Its apparent these egg suppliers already skimped on something to cause this outbreak of salmonella.
All of the eggs should be destroyed if, for no other reason, so the company that produced the tainted eggs will not profit form their nasty production methods. They should pay the price and immediately change their methods to ensure public safety. A big fine is also in order to provide the FDA with funds to further monitor them.
Prepare for Salmonella sequel.
I never eat "processed" food unless I "process" it myself. So I'm not worried.
At the very beginning of this, a doctor on one of the news shows said avoiding salmonella was easy. Just cook your eggs. Duh!
But thanks for asking!
You're right about that amigo!
I certainly hope these food production companies are as smart as you are! Your health is in their hands if you eat their stuff.
folks, as you can clearly read in the story, it's not the processing that harms people. it's the raw product.
as for the rest, not everyone can live on a farm or spend all their free time preparing food and joining collectives. congratulations, if you do.
A CSA program is Community Supported Agriculture.
Thanks!
That's awesome! :D
Could be one reason why my 11 1/2 yr old looks 14. He is very tall and has a moustache and takes steroids himself for his severe asthma. We haven't been buying organic antibiotic and steroid free birds.
I'm sorry your son is having health problems.
I really couldn't tell you why he's having so many problems.
But I can tell you that while eating wheat, I had severe asthma, kidney and bowel problems. So serious problems can result from diet.
I can also say that eating less processed food will not hurt. :)
BORING! This is about undercooked food whether its eggs or meat. Just cook your food to the proper temperatures, processed or not.
This isn't an article on healthy nutritional foods.
I do tend to ramble. :)
Jwhite...ramble all you want I was VERY informed. Here's an idea Mark you don't want to read his posts then SKIP them. I asked him a question and this is an open vine.
Bottom line. We discovered fire. Use it. ;)
Jim in Auburn,
The eggs are mixed into a solution (water and chemical thinner), then pasteurized, which causes them to get thicker again.
Of course all that changed (SALT, START, SALT II) and I became "Middle East" Qualified, Asymmetric Warfare.
the Big Scare has jolted few..this is Like being in a theatre and someone yelling fire, fire !!..okay, some Citizens become restless...............
JESUS !! Jim in Auburn, I'm glad you're on our side!
Chicken, ground beef, and pork are considered dirty so they have to be cooked all the way.
Steaks are still considered safer and is sterile inside. So cooking it rare or medium is still considered safe because any other contaniments are on the outside. I may be wrong later in the future if laziness of the processing plants and ranchers some how get salmonella inside the steak. They seem to accomplish it with the egg.
I will never go back.
jwhite1083,
You know most States have Laws against selling "Raw Milk" to anyone, due to pressure from the dairy lobbyists (factory farms).
"Keep your head down, and speak easy."
LOL
great...we found out the eggs could kill us so the are going to hide them in another product.
as sad as it was only 11 people died in the oil spill.
every year 1500 people in the US die from Salmonella, Listeria, and Toxoplasma.
this is exactly what happens when government takes over our lives. good luck all and may God protect us from this socialist/tyrant government.
So you don't drink any juices, eat bread, sugar, or any canned or frozen vegetables?
So, Angie-307996 -
Have you ever head of wheat berries?
Whole foods. period. less than five ingredients, and ones you should be able to pronounce.
John-2006254,
most of what you are eating:
See my earlier post, I don't eat canned food, I don't care WHO it's from.)
cgtrav,
History has proven that species that find their niches and the niches (specialization) disappears so do they.
pickling salt, sea salt, clean water, sterile container with lid, a clean plate to use as a weight, cucumbers and a couple of days.
same way you make pickled eggs (from boiled eggs).
Already did three of the four, not the TV.
Somehow I sent this conversation in the wrong direction ... sorry.
(By the way I'm all for homemade libation)
I beg to differ with your statement. Don't think that a stressed animal is not transferring unnecessary hormones into the egg she produces which then are transferred to the consumer; and I state without fear of contradiction that battery hens are EXTREMELY stressed, throughout their whole lives.
During that time, I have not had one single ailment.
cgtrav,
I lived at Germany for over 20 years.
Mozzie-6,
Got to ask yourself about all those growth hormones with female children now growing breasts.
"I believe i am overall healthier than before cancer."
Some people believe in fairies too but that don't make it real.
David475776,
I want to say thank you so much for what you are doing for all of us here... wish I could hug ya tight, Buddy! hearing from you all out there ALWAYS reminds me of how lucky I am to be an American...
as far as the crazy eggs here, visiting my sister here in a lil town in Iowa. Heard about the farms, threw out the eggs, and enjoying family time with nieces and nephews and happy I have the chance to!
Take care, David! Someone is looking for you back home!
The FDA is using this opportunity to acquire more power and control:
In order to eat them you would have to eat them scrambled always....what if you like an over easy or medium egg?
Angie-307996
How do you make the over medium eggs if not by "frying". Just curious.
So, wait a minute.... what's wrong with nicotine? Must have missed that press release...
Lance Chesterfield
You asked about nicotine. I think I read that if you smoke a lot of cigarettes high in nicotine you can get a lot of money from one of the tobacco companies either just before or just after you die.
Nicotine promotes the growth of cancer cells. It's a great combination... the chemicals in tobacco smoke cause normal cells to become cancer cells and the nicotine helps the cancer grow and spread....
MBJ-2258480,
So does inhaling the air from the exhausts of laser printers and copy machines.
Most CFLs have .5 to 2 grams of mercury, .5 of vaporized mercury would fill a room 10 feet by 20 feet in seconds (leak between glass and ceramic body), everything in the room would have to be gutted including the paint on the walls and disposed of as hazardous waste (unless you want this in your great grandchildrens water).
reference CFL mercury clean up.
http://www.epa.gov/mercury/spills/index.htm
What is really funny (NOT). Is the EPA not wanting to panic people. Research heavy metal contamination and decontamination US Military (realize that this is the bare minimum, to continue US Military Operations).
Nothing wrong with the proposed process. Nothing at all. Heat will kill the potential germs.
I agree Rodentia, and by the way, interesting name! Which species of Rodentia has caused the dementia?
Really, I wonder why they've had cookie dough recalls.................
They said the eggs were safe, which they weren't
Now they say the cooked eggs will be safe, will they.......
Two words: track record.
see post#1.27.
Did not mention before the surfaces can also be sterilized using UV (Ultra Violet) Light (certain wavelengths) that is only the surfaces (not inside the food).
i'd be more horrified with the bed bugs in NYC biting me than this outrage..see post # 5, this person is dead center- Right On !!!.......
"Scaring the pants off the public?"
Well the general public are morons if they think tainted eggs that have been pasteurized or cooked will hurt them.
only the Chicken Littles that don't know what they are talking about are scared.
Excellent, just go on being a dumbed-down moron consumer that "Trusts" a corrupt, de-regulated industry that didn't seem to be too concerned about putting 550 million tainted eggs into the food supply in the first place.
I'm thinking you're the moron, and ignorant too.
Mike, Boulder,
They (the egg producers) were just to cheap to immunize the chickens (egg layers).
So now to recoup their lost money they are selling them to be processed. See post#1.27.
They assume that this kind of thing has NEVER happened with pasturized eggs:
Like I stated in first sentence at post #6.1 :
Pet Food Recall issued by Pedigree
http://petcare.suite101.com/article.cfm/pet_food_recall_issued_by_pedigree
Hey y'all
Does the newer process of pasteurization kill off nutrients? - I think that might be important to consider after all, that is why we eat food!!
Pasteurization may break down some trace nutrients, vitamins in particular, but so does cooking. The loss is negligible.
NOT negligible. Example: Milk and other dairy products. Proteins and Vitamins A and D must be readded.
And while they may not protect us 100%, I think they will go a long way towards minimzing our exposure.

rorschach-554604,
If you think this is paranoid, just go buy a cheap UV light like:
http://www.verilux.com/uv-products/uvc-sanitizing-travelwand
just do not eat before you do this, so that you do not throw up all over the place.
That is typically sufficient to raise them above the boiling point of water through and through, which is also sufficient to kill bacteria.
rorschach-554604,
I did that when I was stateside; but, after nuking them in the microwave for two to three minutes, I looked at them with a UV and they still glowed (gran negative).
You can image how I feel being here at Afghanistan, we eat out of a large common bowl of rice, another of meat (whatever type), scooped spoon or hands into the bowl in front of us, with the flat bread also on a common plate (you use your hands and break off a piece).
add to post#11.4.
rorschach-554604,
The other thing is many people believe that soap is a disinfectant.
Glad the eggs aren't going to waste. :)
Ken
Exactly. Is DeCoster (and whoever else is responsible) profiting from the reselling of the eggs?
They will be contributing when they think they will face prosecution.
The only direct political contributions that family made were to Hillary Clinton in 2008 and it was only $4,600.
http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2010/08/decoster-contributions-went-to-clinton-in-2008/
The other one mentioned is to the United Egg Association and you can google where their $$ goes too. It goes to both parties. They donated a total of $10,000 to that.
http://www.campaignmoney.com/political/committees/united-egg-association-political-action-committee-eggpac.asp?cycle=02
I can definitely say it's us humans.
i totally agree!!!!!!
Death is a part of life folks and I'll contend the human predator kills its farmed prey far more humanely than any wild predator.
Some of that is already happening, avian flu, swine flu, mad cow disease, H1N1 (combination of avian flu, swine flu, and human flu), etc.
Animals in their minds aren't breathing, living creatures entitled to humane treatment and a quick, painless death - they are 'production units'.
http://www.meat.org/
Otherwise we've compromised our own immune systems and will more then likely be more worse for the ware.
omg... the first time I found an earworm in my corn I nearly fainted!
At least that was not half an earworm.
Well talk to the Bush administration on why the FDA can not protect the food supply properly.
Bush? Are you referring to the 2007 amendments that gave them more funding? You do realize that had to pass Congress when Democrats had 60 seats, right?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_and_Drug_Administration_Amendments_Act_of_2007
Howy61,
Irregardless of who was the President BEFORE.
Pasteurization does NOT definitively kill 100% of bacteria in something.
Based on what evidence?
Your pasteurized milk goes bad.
null123,
you could be a Nobel Prize Wining Microbiologist, or Epidemiologist and they would not believe you.
just to make some of them (not the lazy ones) think, just say thermophiles
That's what they said in Chicago back in 1985 when a dairy sent out milk that made it out with the bacteria still intact. So pasturization does not always work.
I believe that the problem was that the pastuerization process was not followed correctly. The problem was not the process itself, but not following the process correctly.
fire good. clean water good. Learn to cook and clean. ;) Its not rocket science.
Unless you have a entire house multi filter water system or maybe a water distiller, eventually it all ends up inside YOU.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_food
I have a friend who has been a Raw Vegan for over 5 years. Occasionally he'll cheat (a handful of dry roasted nuts, or some packaged juice,) but he eats lots of salad, raw nuts, and is pefectly happy. I couldn't do it but he swears by it.
It is time for an extinction event. Humans have evolved to the level of complete stupidity.
rick-2214333
As evidenced by your post.
you got admit, as simple as that sounded, it still was funny.....
im sure if Americans never cut corners or skimped on safety sure nothing would be wrong with it..... but this is America..... these ceos cant be trusted with our safety all they care about if the bottom line, and that isn't the consumer.
