I must have read that last paragraph wrong. It said there is a state bill that would set up an exchange so people can now compare rates and buy coverage. Isn't that how people buy products already? Why would we need an "exchange" for people to buy a product that is already available for purchase? Why would we need an "exchange" for people to compare rates? There is an entire industry of insurance brokers who perform this work everyday.
Why do reporters feel the need to slant stories in this manner?
Paul777....It's called --- create more gov't jobs with great pay and benefits that the taxpayers have to pay for...in a State that s already flat broke and can't even come close to meeting it's pension obligations now.....
Obviously you forgot that this is the Mexifornia Legislature... Of course we need to have more government jobs because all the private sector jobs are leaving the state...
We need an exchange because Arnold doesn't know how to compare rates and benefits (or apples and oranges for that matter)via the Internet, a broker, sky writing, text message, or braille. He thinks he came up with something to make us happy just like giving our schools money from the lottery. Oops, that didn't happen. I have an idea for an exchange Arnold, you for ANYONE that's not you!!
Dawn-226: You do know that the Legislature in California is about 65% democrat in both houses....you do know that Arnold S. is governor and NOT a member of the legislature. I'm not sure your hatred for Arnold S. has anything to do with this story....but go ahead and attack a Republican...when everyone knows the democratic legislature of California has bankrupted the state (as well as ALL democratically run legislatures of New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Oregon, etc....etc...) If you want overspending and deficits, elect a democratic legislature.
And how much will this cost the average consumer? I'm in my 60's and male, I need maternity coverage? It is amazing how much more socialism each generation accepts then the one before it.
bob5ford....It's called ------ redistribution of wealth.....your money to pay for coverage you don't need to subsidize the coverage for others who do want it, they just don't think they should have to pay extra for it.....pregnant is a "condition"...not an illness.....no one chooses to get sick.

Those healthy 20-something women are already paying for your healthcare. Statistically 60+ males are costing the healthcare system a lot more than young women are.
Well, we didn't set up the system, we just paid into it because we were forced to. If we weren't paying for all the Illegal Aliens health care (including their anchor babies) things would be a lot more equal.
How many "healthy" Illegal Aliens are having easy child births? Most of them because most of the Illegal Alien women aren't healthy and they have complicated deliveries.
A man in his 60's has been paying into the Medicare system for 40 years longer than a woman in her 20's. He is entitled to coverage that he has paid for during his entire life. If it's more, then so be it. He paid for it. (Unless he is an illegal alien that paid nothing in...and deserves nothing in return)
WHEN are they going to require health insurance from illegal aliens BEFORE they are provided with medical care? Schwarztenegger complains that his state is bankrupt, but he keeps on keeping on...... with all the free services to illegals. When he going to pull his head out from under his gigantic bicep and figure that one out??
Attention California Legislators – how about this: Focus on what will bring private sector jobs back to California instead of creating more costs to burden the remaining tax paying residents. The article pointed out that if these bills become law they would eventually be replaced by federal health care laws in 2014. Having children is an option, not a right. People should consider whether or not they can afford to bring a child into an already overcrowded world and then take more responsibility once they do make a baby. We make it way too easy for society to get stuck with the tab to house, feed, educate and now insure their spawn. Gone are the days when large families were a necessity to work the family farm or carry on the blood line. I would like to see a bill that gives tax credits and other necessities for one child per person (that’s two per couple) and then for those that exceed their allotment there would be a surcharge. Seriously though, I would never expect such a concept to be adopted but maybe cap taxpayer funded benefits at one child per US citizen or legal permanent resident. Have more and the parent bears the cost, not me. MAYBE give additional benefits to adopted / fostered children.
I’m in favor of what is fair – the bill to prohibit insurers from denying coverage to children due to pre-existing conditions seems like a good idea, especially if the same would apply to adult citizens and legal permanent residents.
California is such a messed up liberal run state. I'm just waiting for the legislature to pass a bill requiring prescription coverage for "medical marijuana". Have you seen the losers in line at the pot shops?? They are all about 20-30. Never had a job that pays more than minimal wage, and their "medical condition" is absurd like "anxiety", "headaches", "stress". California should take away the medical licenses of these hack physicians who will give anyone a medical marijuana prescription for $60 bucks.
I keep hearing about all those jobs leaving california but having lived in MANY states over the last few years all I heard in St Louis was jobs leaving there, Jobs leaving Michigan, Jobs leaving Georgia, Jobs leaving Washington state, jobs leaving Colorado...
New Flash guys, the jobs are not leaving to go to another state they are leaving to go to China, India, Mexico and Canada. Most of those jobs that are leaving are manufactuing and IT... we have this idea that Americans are great but the only thing we seem to do well is buy and consume... Walmart specials (and yes I do realize it is about every retailer but Walmart definetly takes the cake. The knee jerk reaction is 'well why should I pay more of my money to buy (insert American product here)'
If you are not willing to spend that money on something so the money stays in this country quit complaining about the jobs leaving unless you are willing to work for 1/3 the money and compete for the work.
Most of the California jobs are going to Nevada or Arizona, where they aren't taxed to death and overregulated by LIBERALS. check out this study which confirms the obvious: Liberal run states destroy business.
The Milken Institute demonstrated over a 5-year period that California LOST 82,000 manufacturing jobs while surrounding states ADDED 62,000 jobs in the same sector. The study blamed California's heavy regulation, hostile democrat legislature, and the Highest tax rate in the U.S.
That is why I don't understand why Obama thinks raising taxes helps business....we all know it DOES NOT.
I guess that you would be happy if the Feds didn't collect any taxes. Then there would go the roads and all of the other services that the government provides. Most Americans don't stop and think about how good they really have it. Stop complaining!
