Actually isn't it the FDA's job? With all the people out of work it shouldn't be to hard to find a couple of thousand people to train and put them out there doing all the testing on these imported products. It almost seems that the Asian world is trying to destroy a whole generation one kid at a time. First Toys then milk now candy, do we see a pattern here?
The FDA is dominated by physicians who have absolutely no idea what they are doing. They have neither traning nor experience in food or drug safety and most "owned" by agri-business and the for-profit medical industry. The FDA has about 5% of the personnel that it needs to regulate the for-profit drug and medical equipment industry and about .1% of the personnel necessary to even begin to regulate the food safety industry.
The FDA needs to be broken into two agencies --- one for drugs and medical devices and the other for foods. And they need rid of physicians without degrees specific to these areas (an MD is not sufficient to design, conduct, or evaluate clinical trials and drug safety and has absolutely zero skillset for food safety.) All FDA personnel who receive even a dime from any food or medical industry source needs to be fired outright. A ball point pen or a free lunch should be cause for dismissal. Simply refusing to divulge finances (as over 80% of the MD's have done) should be presumption of guilt and should result in immediate dismissal.
One of the ways that the morally bankrupt drug, for-profit medical, processed food, and agri-business industries have been allowed to thrive is that the FDA has been kept so small that it cannot regulate anything, so physician-dominated that the skills simply do not exist, and so lacking in enforcement powers that they are laughed at by corporate America.
The woman who is director of the FDa has zero qualifications to be in the job. She is and MD and a career politician whose sole qualification is that she was the first black woman to graduate from Vasser. Well, whoop-tee-doo! I am not a racist and have no problem with either blacks or women in these jobs, but out of the thousands of QUALIFIED people with PhD's and skills, why was she picked?
Can somebody please do their job and inspect what we are eating? I think "we" the people are paying your salaries and I'm not pleased with your performance. Thanks
Because the people in America that would make your candy want 45 bucks an hour plus pension and free healthcare just to pull a lever on a candy extruder machine. Kinda like the bolt tighteners at GM.
Here's a good start..No more imported candy...Any future violations with imported foods is automatic stop. We have hard enough time checking our own food. Quality Control is key.
I'm with Walter. There is no good reason to import candy. It's not like we can't make it here. I've even stopped buying some candy I liked after I noticed production had moved to Mexico. Nothing against Mexico but it is ridiculous to create more pollution having to truck a simple thing like candy from another country.
See, I’d be down with moving candy production back to the US, but nobody seems to want to pay the cost of the candy when the people making it are paid a living wage. America is going to have to realize that we are going to have to accept higher prices and all of us affording less THINGS if we want the people making those things to make a living wage. That’s not a bad thing; higher prices reduce consumption and we should be striving to consume less. It’s not like our fat asses need any more candy anyway.
Thanks for putting this out there. I'm generally sick of hearing the ignorant people in our country screaming about wanting more for less and cant seem to put 1 + 1 together to understand why this country has gone to @!$%# and no one can make a living anymore...even as the same people who are lsoing their jobs to foreign labor are demanding better prices and jobs. Same goes for the people who bitch non-stop about paying taxes, yet expect a ton of free @!$%# from the government (new roads, better power distribution, ... list goes to infinity)...
How long until some hick from Texas with little experience outside their little town pops up here to 'tell me like it is!!!'?
Same goes for the people who @!$%# non-stop about paying taxes, yet expect a ton of free @!$%# from the government (new roads, better power distribution, ... list goes to infinity)...
I was just down at City Hall demanding better power distribution.
What happened to all the electronic related jobs? What have you in your homes that is made in the US? How much of your car is from outside the country? About all that's US is agricultural and even that is being farmed out. It isn't all workers wages that causes the problem, it's the fantastically high salaries and bonuses at the top.
Good luck, went to several stores recently to buy a small refrigerator for my workshop out back. Went to Walmart, Target, K-mart, Best Buy and a cpl other places....... They were all made in China* most commonly..... followed by Mexico* second place, and lastly France. Amazing, no..... our manufacturing base in this country has been outsourced by policies that favor US companies that move to foreign countires. Cheaper labor costs, no benefits, no holiday bonuses, no unions, no OSHA, etc..... Do the companies care? No....
You must be living under a rock. There are huge cargo ships that bring China-made goods into the US. On the return trip, the ship is empty. What does that tell you.
HAL9000-1718832, I love your simple answer! Major chain stores should be held more accountable and Americans should try harder to buy American products.
I only eat food processed in the USA, with an occasional product from Europe, Canada, or Australia/New Zealand. I have doubts about all food producers, but I trust the ones from these places the most, not because of their respective FDA's, but because of their legal systems that are effective at litigation. The fear of lawsuits that could destroy a company cleans up their behavior more than any government agency. I will buy coffee and bananas and other tropical fresh fruit from other countries, but I peel or wash it well.
It doesn't matter if it is imported or made in America. Anything processed and packaged is loaded with chemicals not meant to be ingested by human beings. Even buying natural/healty/raw/unprocessed food products are suspect now. The bulk of my diet is eggs, steak, chicken, ground turkey and a variety of frozen veggies and organic fruits when I can get them. There is still no guarantee with my type of diet, but it's about as good as you can get these days.
I read this morning that Americans now spend about 6% of our income on food; whereas in the 60's & 70's, it was close to 20% for some families. If there's any truth to that, it really does beg the question why we need to drive prices so low by importing food. It also makes me wonder what the potential upside is for our economy if we cut back on what we import.
I'm sure the lower and middle class still pays the same for food as they always have. It is just that a small fraction of the population making excessively large amounts of money that the statistics might be off...
On the other hand I once came across a pamphlet translating 1958 prices and wages and so on into today's numbers. Everything seemed affordable and virtually comparable. The only thing that struck me as CHEAP today was milk. In 1958 the price was comparable to $10 a gallon...
I also noticed that WALGREENS doesn't sell the wide selection of gummy candies anymore... the were made in China, now all but banished! Too bad many American companies like BRACHS make such horrifically disgusting 'candies'... I'm surprised they are still around!
I'm surprised more contaminated food from overseas hasn't been recalled. There is more and more food being imported from all over the world. No way the FDA can inspect it all. A few years ago there was a big scandal because toys from China had been painted w/ lead based paint and posed a hazard, and during same time Chinese made pet food was recalled. Shortly after that it was reported that infants in China had been poisoned by contaminated infant formula.
Every holiday there is candy and treats on our shelves that have been made in china, asia and other countries. It's only a matter of time before there is a massive recall of say holloween candy that has caused deaths in the US. Now, I am NOT against imported food. I love olive oil from Italy and Coke bottled in Mexico (Made with cane sugar, not corn syrup. I can taste the difference.) but Holloween candy from China? No friggin way am I handing that out to kids.
The ignorance of people like "Chris 749391" is matched only by his vicousness. I can only comment on a few of his idiotic statements. The "head" (actually commissioner) of the FDA is Margaret Hamburg: she has an MD from Harvard (you may have heard of it, Chris), was one of the youngest persons ever elected to the Institute of Health, and has had a long distinguished record in public health, including Health Commissioner of New York City. Both her parents are distinguished physicians. Her MOTHER was the first black woman to attend Vassar (note spelling, Chris). (Margaret Hamburg is half African-American.)
So what does a person get in America these days from working hard, getting a good education, raising your children up to follow in a noble profession like medicine? You get to have semi-literate trolls like Chris (who has probably never accomplished or managed anything of note in his life) to trash you with made-up statistics, envy, and vitriol. It's sad.
This is why the war in Afghanistan is pointless, terrorists will destroy Americans through its food and water supply, not through bombings and shootings, end the outsourcing and bring American production of food, materials , garments and fuel back to US soil!!!
Did you see the Pubes writhe in pain and anguish over the Dems closing some of the loopholes that give businesses tax breaks for moving jobs overseas? These so-called teabags kill me when outta one side of their mouths they want to buy American, and the other side of their mouths hail the Pubes. Faux Newz doesn't report that kinda thing. They just started screaming about Dems raising taxes on businesses. They didn't raise taxes, they just did what they could to keep the corporations from still scamming our jobs... and benefiting from doing so.
I read that the Chinese are aware of America's fear of made in China labels so they have begun to eliminate labels. Here is how you can tell its made in China. Check the bar code. If the number is 900 or 992, it's made in China; America is 0.
This is clearly President Obama's fault.
Nah... its Bush's fault... remember? Nothing can be Obama's fault.

Chris, you have nailed a big part of the problem. So true.
my physician scoffed at the idea that the dishes i bought at target may have lead! after all the chinese lead stories
If anybody is interested in buying some...http://shop.waiyeehong.com/?manufacturers_id=42&page=1&sort=2a
Can somebody please do their job and inspect what we are eating? I think "we" the people are paying your salaries and I'm not pleased with your performance. Thanks
No regulation on foreign candy? By the way can someone tell me why did we have to
outsource candy and put our kids at risk. Is money that important?
We supposed to be pro-life, I am, or we just pro-greed?
Because the people in America that would make your candy want 45 bucks an hour plus pension and free healthcare just to pull a lever on a candy extruder machine. Kinda like the bolt tighteners at GM.

I'm cool with that AMereCaratGirl
Along the lines of moving jobs overseas.

I have to agree. It can't keep going in this direction for long before there is some serious fracturing and conflict breaking out.
Not long before...? Look around...there is already some serious fracturing and conflict going on. Nobody wants to work together to solve our problems!
buy american

EVERYONE knows that American = 100% safe.

why do we keep importing lead and maybe melamine?
why do we allows the use of high fructose corn syrup HFCS
a group tried to get it banned but the corn growers lobby stopped the ban
Fish at Sam's, Kroger and WalMart "made in China"
do we need to buy from FISH from halfway around the WORLD?
BOYCOTT CHINESE PRODUCTS

Pretty soon the only thing made in America will be (The illegal immigrants) babies.
So sad...
'Cocon Grape Gummy 100 percent candy'
So they also make Cocon Grape Gummy 50% candy? What the hell would that be? Half candy...half Malaysian carp?
This is why the war in Afghanistan is pointless, terrorists will destroy Americans through its food and water supply, not through bombings and shootings, end the outsourcing and bring American production of food, materials , garments and fuel back to US soil!!!
