Anybody else think they should of installed scissors instead. Then the movie Edward Scissor hands would be based on a true story. I would surely hire him to trim my bushes.
Congratulations to this man I wish him all the best of luck. And I do have the utmost respect for the surgeons who performed the surgery. But I do have one question that is troubleing me. How did any of them during the course of the surgery find time to "tweet" about it? Why was this a priority? And how could the hospital even allow it? If I were the patient I would want all of their attention on the task at hand. Not taking the time to tweet anything.
I live in Louisville, Kentucky and have to say there is much more than hillbillies and morons, not to mention girls barefoot and pregnant running around too.......GIVE ME A BREAK! Anyways, science is amazing, and they are on their way to perfection with every surgery they do here!
Live here too...there are MANY girls running around barefoot and pregnant....but mostly on Dixie HWY and in the West End. Just sayin.....cant deny the truth. But none the less, Three Cheers for our medical staff and brilliant physicians, surgeons, and business people of KY! HIP HIP HOOOORAYY! (x3)
This is where allopathic medicine really shines. This and trauma response. If you guys would just focus on this and send patients with chronic disease to qualified alternative practitioners, you would be such heroes.
Congrsts to all of the docs there at the Jewish Hospital. As a person that they helped back in 1989 after an accident while assigned to Ft Campbell. These people do the greatest work !!!

This is truly a miracle of modern science and innovation. These doctors are taking dramatic steps forward and they should be revered as pioneers in the medical field. As for the DNA and fingerprints… I do not think that these are even issues. A man can hold his wife again, pick up his children, and shake the hand of a colleague once again. Science has offered this man a second chance, I am sure that he will do nothing but good with his new hands.
Very mixed feelings on this one. I think this is great if he is willing to deal with all of the very nasty stuff that goes along with having his immune system suppressed, which will be necessary to prevent tissue rejection. While I think it makes sense to transplant a heart or other organs essential to life, even with the immune system compromise, because the alternative is death, I don't know if it's worth it for new hands. Myself, I would have gone with prosthetics. What we need is to find a way to grow replacement body parts using the patient's own tissue so the new parts are genetically compatible. This, to me, is one of medicine's holy grails, along with a cure for cancer and auto-immune diseases. I suspect that all of these will be accomplished through a thorough understanding and control of the genetic operations of cells in organisms that have already reached maturity. Perhaps using synthetic viruses to inject modified DNA to reprogram all of the cells in the same way at the same time will be the way. This operation, hopefully, will look pretty quaint some day soon.
Finally some good news to warm the soul and refresh the spirit.
And they say all there is in KY are hillbillys and morons....pshh..
I get the same flak about Texas, nevermind that the MD Anderson Cancer Center is here, part and parcel of the Texas Medical Center.
Incredible what medical technology is doing!
Now that is great news, best I have heard in years!
If he commits a crime, whose name do they trace the fingerprints to?
Maybe they have to refingerprint him. But then, he might not have ever had a reason to be fingerprinted in the first place.
Great that they can do this but EliMae poses an interesting question. What about DNA?
DNA wouldn't change. They would have had to find something that is a match, and I imagine it would adapt to his own DNA.

No one actually performing the operation "tweeted". The hospital allowed it so his family could stay updated on his progress at all times.
I suspect since he is in sterile mode, he was speaking to another person doing the actual tweeting and other doctors following along.

awesome and amazing
Well if the guy is not married and doesn't have a girlfriend, he's probably kinda happy with this turn of events.
Now He can play with Jimmy again !
amazing
Where are they getting the hands from?
a dead guy
I thought the operation was performed at the Islamist Hospital by the famous Hamas doctor in Gaza. (sic)
Very cool story... Hope he ends up with a lot of function
Congratulations to the patient and the doctors.

A fantastic story, mabe they can send a team to the Congo and Rawanda to give hope to the thousands of deliberate amputees.
If the hands were from China then in 15 minutes he would want to have them transplanted again.
Well, you have to HAND it to the doctors, they did a fabulous job!
