I'm all for the updating of hospital gown styles, but I can tell you that you need to have the back side easily accessible in some way. Especially on geriatric wards, where people have trouble getting to the bathroom on time, having a solid back will just get in the way and require a gown change for soiling. With the open-back style, you can just sweep the sides to the side and get down to business.
It's great to get down to business cleaning the person off. But it's nicer having them able to maintain there dignity up to that point. If they are bound to the bed no problem but if the are able to get up and walk around they should have the right to cover themselves in totality. I say bonus to updating hospital gowns!

Maybe they should have more than one design? What about folks with a front end damage? How do breezy cheeks help them?
