LOL In August, I cleaned out my mom's pantry. She is a depression baby so NOTHING gets thrown out in her house!! She was sick in bed; I knew it was the perfect time. I tossed canned veggies from '98, ketchup that had turned brown, and goods from a store that went bankrupt in '03!! My dad died in 2002; mama still had sardines she bought for him years before his death! In all, I filled 3 large trash bags.
It's so neat in her pantry; everything in its place. She apparently did not rotate stock, so she's been using the fresh cans, thank goodness. Who knows when I would have noticed if I wasn't looking for some three bean salad she wanted for lunch.
Mama was mad with me! Wonder what she's going to say when she finally discovers that I cleaned out her medicine cabinet too! If you have a parent like mine, please check their stock!!!
Found the same when the in-laws moved to assisted living. Sorry to report that sister-in-law has inherited same hoarding habits as her parents. Her pantry/fridge were filled with old expired food. Same sister-in-law grabbed tons of old meds while cleaning out the parents house. She probably still has those. No reason to be grabbing somebody else's heart meds and Alzheimers drugs, "just in case". Scares me to think that within a couple of years she may have grandchildren in her home--I hope our nieces have more common sense than their mom or their grandparents, but I am not holding my breath.
Sounds like I need to do some purging - cupboards that is. Fresh is better but daily trips to the grocery store is a waste of precious time. I think I'll tackle the pantry today. No sense eating food without nutrients.
One more thing to worry about! To beat this, I eat fresh whenever possible. Tastes better too.
msnbc asks, "are the nutrients in my panties expiring?" In a word, yes.
Whoa!! Whoa msnbc for this story; and whoa Waterdog49 for that rip.
This is a good article... finally!! Except now I'm hungry. Time for some pasta. Burp.
Veronica, you won't be working for MSNBC for long. This type of writing doesn't get people riled up!!

Good for my health, bad for my pocket book. I now have to throw out 90% of the items in my pantry. Bummer.
