Big companies, like Conagra and this guy runninng a huge egg production company don't care about much more than the bottom line. They sell-we get sick.
How does ConAgra comes into this equation? I really don't think they would knowingly use bad eggs and the eggs they do use are pasteurized to my knowledge. However, this scumbag deCoster, should be put in a chicken coop and kept there for the rest of his life. I'd like to know who took those samples for the last couple of years and ignored the salmonella. Whoever did it, lock him/her in the coop too.
I'd like to know the name of every consumer who buys eggs! Do you see how stupid the argument is, it is called consumer demand and no one is forcing anyone to buy their eggs!
Dan-1506871
You have your free will! No one is force feeding you!
So, it OK for a company to sell you effectively poisoned food? You buy your eggs in a grocery store, it says the name of the store, not the farm. Let's just extend your argument, and just don't buy any food.
Dan-1506871
I'd like to know the name of every consumer who buys eggs! Do you see how stupid the argument is, it is called consumer demand and no one is forcing anyone to buy their eggs!
I agree with DaleP. This argument makes absolutely no sense, Dan. No consumer is knowingly buying a product that has such a high likelihood of salmonella. Consumers demand food they can buy in a grocery store since not many can be self sufficient in growing and producing all their own food. As a result, ALL that food should be expected to be safe. End of story. Any other suggestion is silliness.
Dan, you are an utter fool. Do you really think people would knowingly eat contaminated food products? Would YOU? Most people go to a grocery store and purchase items that they trust have been cleared as safe to consume. Did the slime-ball who had many reports of contaminated egges eat his own product after years of paying fines for polluting the environment, selling tainted products, etc. He, you and anyone else directly responsible for producing or marketing eggs that made so many sick need to be force-fed these products until you puke your guts out. Don't give me some rat-hole excuse for being so totally stupid. You're worse than chicken manure. It makes me wonder if you're on their payroll.
I think Austin should eat all of the infected eggs with the same health care plan my employer provides me yeah, zip, zilch, zero, nadda, an aside I got poison oak in early August, I went to Tuality Health care in Hillsboro OR they wanted 260 coconuts for me to see a PA in 2.5 hours, I called Zoomcare at 130 got a 215 APPOINTMENT on a Sunday walked out with a 9 coconut prescription, AND WAIT for this, have nothing in mouth, trust me have NOTHING in YOUR mouth, the visit was 89.00 coconuts. Clearly, Dan, you have some undisclosed personal issue that is affecting your judgment as well as your postings. I cannot for the life if me figure out why you'd be SO anti-government that you'd actually be FOR people becoming sick (some of whom are innocent children), possibly permanently disabled or dying. To extend your unbelievable (lack of) logic, that would suggest you think people should NOT use seat belts, NOT visit doctors etc b/c "we're all going to die some day anyway".
Also, if you are SO incredibly anti-government of any kind, why don't you move somewhere else? If you do decide to stay, I would suggest that the only way you can be congruent with your anti-government beliefs is to forego any social security payments, any social security disability (should you become disabled by some tainted food for example) and any Medicare. You should also not make sure of any public transportation, use roads funded by the DOT, make use of the USPS or any services such as fire, police etc. The government is NOT the enemy.
You must either be a paid troll, someone who is not completely balanced mentally/emotionally and/or just trying to push buttons out of some misguided sense of (bad) humor.
i guess i must be like Forrest gump and not be a smart man, but ive never heard of rasing eggs, raising chickens maybe and collecting eggs, rasing a garden maybe
Dr B, now that's telling Dan something maybe that he should have know, if you don't like how the country is RAN, leave, I'm sure there are many places DAN could go too .....
This is the result of the anti-regulation mood in the government over the past decade. The role of government inspectors has been weakened and replaced by self-regulation requirements. Companies are required to test and take action based on the results of those tests. Too many companies follow neither the letter nor the spirit of such regulation and the result is tainted eggs, meat, produce and other food products.
Business should not be over-regulated, but neither should they be under-regulated. It is important that we have a safe food supply, safe toys for our children, meaningful working conditions for emplyees (e.g., coal miners), clean air and water, etc., etc. "Buyer beware" has considerable limitations and reasonable regulation is necessary for the safety and health of the people in this country.
It's not really clear what your point is, Dan, but if you are trying to make the point that a regulated business believes it is over-regulated you should think about it a little bit. What business wants more regulation? The regulation is intended to ensure a safe food supply, not to make farmers happy.
The regulation is intended to make insecure people like you feel like they will always be safe with their beloved government taking care of them. Don't buy the eggs if you are so paranoid of getting sick!
Don, Make sure before you leave your house today to go over your safety check list. P.S. make sure you wear your respirator and carry your hand sanitizer and baby wipes with you today and make sure you keep a safe distance from other human beings, you never know what they might be carrying!
Dan, you're a pathetic Corporate Apologist......please, move to central America where your apparent desire for an unregulated, corrupt & dangerous food supply system will best serve you.
No mike, I am here to stay and you and your communist friends can leave my country! I live in Arizona, if your ever down this way, let me know and then we will meet and see who has the right to stay!
Dan, would you please stop characterizing yourself as an Arizonan? People who place poison out for the public deserve to be removed from society, not rewarded for it.
Dan-1506871
No mike, I am here to stay and you and your communist friends can leave my country! I live in Arizona, if your ever down this way, let me know and then we will meet and see who has the right to stay!
AH! That explains MUCH. Dan, you are a terrific example of why my family left AZ, despite having built a multi-million dollar dream home which we sacrificed for a fraction of its worth (and no we didn't lose it or sell it short, just walked away from half million of cash in) just to get the hell out of such a back-assword, full of ignorant jerks kind of state. Sad. It wasn't always that way.
4. Government regulations may be the only way to assure both consumer and worker health.
Yet federal employee inspectors who get paid the big bucks did not catch this one! You cannot have feds on every street corner finding everything that goes wrong. Sometimes bad things happen. To say some lofty federal office somewhere is going to protect you put you in more danger. Just be smart! Know who you are buying from. Use consumer groups to get info on the businesses. Start up a watch dog group yourself. There are multitudes of ways to combat bad business practices then to create federal agencies who literally do not have one living care about you personally. We as a peole have been so weakened by the concept you need a fed for this and a fed for that that we have become winers when something bad happens. Well when monsanto or ADM or what ever big farming consortium buys politicians to get federal contracts, who then is in control? THe feds arent. History has proven a fed is simply a self centered self preservationist and will do anything to keep their jobs - if that means making people (they serve) wait for things they request from the government. I THINK THE PRIVATE SECTOR EXCEEDS AT ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING THE FEDS DO. The feds simply pretend to have jobs so they can play the rest of their day.
Don - you are correct that the farm should have been following some sort of regulation. Many egg farms are successfully self regulating but to do that you have to have integrity. too bad decoster has none. We now have an FDA Egg Safety Rule which will clean up this sort of thing - this program has been extremely successful at the state level in 9 states. Sadly Iowa is not one of them. I'm glad I'm not the guys in the Iowa Ad Dept who failed to get something like this going.
Profit margins and consumer demand are two very different things.
I doubt demand for this guys product would be there if the consumer were made aware of the ingredients.
Profits margins are enhanced by conning the consumer, cutting corners on hygiene and ignoring best industry practices.
Consumer Demand is based on industry standards that the Government is supposed to enforce since this and many other examples clearly demonstrates the industry cannot police itself.
So you are easily conned? Do you eat eggs? Consumer demand is based on what the consumer demands! The consumer wants eggs (or demands eggs) and an egg farm provides them with the eggs! YOu see how that works!
Hey Dan, I DO live in AZ and am ashamed of that lying bitch we have who calls herself a Governor. The economic conditions here (60% of the houses on the market are foreclosure houses) and pin-heads we have in the legislature make us a laughing stock of the nation
This is a case against government regulation?. If 426 reports are not convincing it is because the regulations are not effective. If they are not effective at making the problem visible, the either the government, or the company, or the testing company know how to enforce a regulation. Given that a regulation is not enforces, then it reasonable that the regulation not exist since it waste of time. Solution the company should be in charge of regulation and the regulation is simply fix the problem enforcement is also simple, those harmed by the corporation or their families should assume owner of the corporation. If the problem continues then the next generation of survivors takes over the corporation and so forth.
Your arguments are very unconvincing. Do you actually think that because the government can't heal everyone or prevent every diseased egg that the government should do nothing? All reasonable people understand that absolutes seldom apply to real life. No government regulation makes life perfect, but good regulation makes life better. We want the food supply safer .... we know that perfect is unattainable, and there is always a cost benefit analysis before regulations are put in place. Therefore, we have a safer food supply with FDA regulations than without, and the cost is not great. It's pretty obvious that the price of eggs has not skyrocketed due to regulation.
OSHA is another good example of government regulation. OSHA has not prevented all workplace deaths and injuries, but since OSHA came into existence in the early 1970's workplace deaths have decreased by approximately 80%. You may wish to go back to the bad old days before OSHA regulations, but I do not.
Dan, I'm guessing that you are a tea party kind of guy. Am I right?
Dan, you're a apologist for a corrupt system of food processing. In our 13 trillion dollar economy I doubt it's too much to expect that this industry supply bacteria free food items.
Your comparison is stupid...........
It should read: because no human being in America should intentionally be exposed to a deadly bacteria and the US Government should be given the power to effectively regulate this industry.
BTW: Bush did a great job of rolling back years of food safety regulations and related budgets.
This is what our country is reaping after years of GOP leadership.
Don, I Actually do believe that the government should do nothing! Business will regulate itself! If people get sick from eggs that come from a certain egg farm, then people will buy from a different egg farm. Businesses would have better self regulation than the government could ever do, because they would be out of business very quickly if they provided a poor quality product. Since you will always rely on your government to take care of you, you will never enjoy the qaulity of life that free people have. Just a lemming!
No Dan, you are the lemming in actually believeing that industry will self-regulate. Why do you think the industry doesn't want to be required to tell you where the food comes from, or what's in it, or if it's genetically modified, or radiated.
Good GAWD, you're a total lemming to think all industries won't totally corrupt the system so consumers don't know CRAP about the products they are consuming.
I realize that what I am about to post is in vain for all the government lemmings, but try using some self responsibility and check with your local nutritionist or even your doctor for the steps you can take to prevent sicknesses from foods! Thank you and good bye!
My guess is that Dan is a Freeman living in Arizona. I have dealt with a portion of that group and they believe that America should be as it was when they stepped off the boats at Plymouth and New York in the mid 1600s. I believe now what I believed then...it is paranoia thing.
One can only hope that Dan meant it when he said goodbye. clearly the man is beyond even the lunatic fringe. There is no reasoning with someone who is unbalanced. It's a little like trying to argue with someone who is drunk. Doesn't get you anywhere other than a bad headache from banging your head against a brick wall.
If by some chance Dan is still lurking and/or posting....please please please TRY to use the brain God gave you and maybe even a teeny tiny portion of logic. Perhaps it's not EVERYONE else on this blog that has a problem. Clearly there isn't one person who can agree with you, at least not wholeheartedly. Here's a thought for you: A professor once said that it's "when everyone ELSE in the world seems to be crazy, then perhaps it's you."
OK I wasn't going to chime in but I must.......A couple of things:
1. OK the positive results from this company were results of their own testing, not some federal government agency. There were no FDA regulators in the facility prior to this investigation like one of you said. Eggs up until recently were a product under the auspices of the USDA. Yes Dan is an idiot on this issue and I assume many more. For you bleeding heart liberals out there who think that Dan is this way simple because he is a republican/conservative, I am a conservative who believes in some government regulation/oversight. You are no better than radical muslims who think that because one preacher wants to burn the quran that all Christians are that way.
The changes in egg safety in American producers was actually developed while Bush was in office but as you all know the government runs on its own time-table.
2. Just as with all industry there are folks out there that do not care about safety and such is the case with this egg producer. There are numerous farms in America that produce just as many eggs and do it safely and manage to still make a profit. This company cut corners and it made many people sick. Very sad.
I hope I'm around to know when something happens to Dan or one of his family, loved ones, etc. and he starts whining about "why didn't someone do something".....Arizonans of his ilk rant about property rights, THEIR rights and don't stop to think SOMEONE IS ENFORCING THOSE RIGHTS AND IT'S THE GOV. THAT HE WANTS OUT OF HIS LIFE. It's state gov. in AZ that makes laws that make all the rest of us look stupid; and who the hell does he think is going to enforce those laws if it isn't GOVERNMENT!!
Dan - Jack Decoster is the poster boy for why we need government regulation. He has no personal integrity. The free market has failed to put him out of business despite his past violations of many laws. Why do people buy from him? Because he must lower his price to the point where they overlook all the other stuff. The companies buying eggs from such a disreputable source should be ashamed of themselves and now they are exposed because they are also caught up in the recall.
He should be given the death penalty. This is the equivalent of product tampering. He knew he was introducing a potentially lethal substance into the nation's food supply, yet he did nothing about it! His conduct was criminal and he should be treated as such. In fact, this punishment should extened to everyone at the farm who knew about the salmonella, but did not blow the whistle.
Dan ... certainly those who sicken and die will not buy from your farm, but why should that have to happen and how many lives would it take before it was discovered who was doing it?
This story is being taken completely out of context in terms of scale. So considering that they produced a couple of hundred million eggs in the last 2 years. It would be a safe assumption that they ran tests on a certain percentage of those eggs. Say 1/10% on each 100,000,000 eggs. Thats 1 million test completed. So 400 positive tests of 1,000,000 isnt really anything when put into scale. The chance of even a false positive on those test would possibly be that high.
This logic is inherently wrong. The tests are of the environment in the henhouse not the eggs, though a positive environmental test SHOULD have triggered egg testing. sure maybe they did a bunch of other tests and came back negative but the number of positives is absolutely HUGE.
To all of you lemmings demanding government regulation, I only hope that one day you will become free of these chains and learn to live and enjoy life! P.S. you may get sick once in a while, but that is a part of life. But if you continue down your path of slavery, I hope you will invest in your own test equipment for every disease or germ known to man and stop asking the rest of us to support your government fed hypochondriac habits!
Dan, you're an idiot. This company knew about positive salmonilla results FOR 2 YEARS and did.... what was that? NOTHING! And you think they should regulate themselves? Yeah, that will work. Let your kids eat these tainted eggs and see how you feel after one of them gets seriously ill and\or dies.
Of course no one HAS to buy eggs, but I think it's completely reasonable for people to believe the food they are being sold is safe.
Your insults show how short sighted and stupid you really are.
If everyone was honest, and was concerned about the health and welfare of their fellow human beings, then no, we would not need govt. regulation. The reality is that there are people who would rather make the fast buck instead of ensuring their product is safe. What do you expect consumers to do, bring their own personal egg testers to the supermarkets to make sure the eggs are safe? When people buy a food product, they have every right to believe that that product is safe for consumption, unless it is out of date or they have a known allegry to it. Also, the salmonella danger was greater if the eggs were not cooked thoroughly. This would account (somewhat) for the lower number of salmonella that were reported.
Clearly this pondscum knew he was in violation of regulations, running a dirty operation and treating employees like slaves. No personal ethics, no sense of morality. Greed is his religion and he worships at the altar of money. Govt. inspectors have little or know recourse. Thanks to de-regulation and Republican assumption that business will regulate itself, we're at th mercy of these people. Anything for profit and money - who gives a s--t about the consequences!
Greed is the whole country's religion! That's what's wrong! Even the people responsible for product safety are corrupt!!! Every person that got sick should sue him and make him pay! Also, make him eat his own disgusting eggs and work in his own waste! There are no consequences for anything anymore, except being a middle class, taxpaying citizen. We pay for everybody the rich and the poor. What will they do when we're gone?
If I was this companies liability insurance underwriter, I would be planning a HUGE premium increase for next year. I hope it puts them out of business. If you can't run your company ethically, you're company should die.
the title of this article alone, "egg company knew of salmonela, investigators say", is enough for me.
Shut them down, give other egg companies a chance. I personally went with a brand name that's in my home state and have dodged this problem, but I tell you if salmonela ubrupted in my neck of the woods I'd be spending my cash on Oak Farms or whatever you call it. You get what I'm saying.
I don't think any of us should give this company any slack. They either get rid of this virus- disease or they shut down. Plain and simple.
Dan, are you for real? That egg company supplies eggs for various other companies and traceability by the consumer would be difficult.
Do you think that each product for sale is manufactured by thier own respective manufacturer? Almost all products for sale in each consumer catagory are produced by a few companies under contract or license.
I know electronics and I ask you, do you think Sony, Apple, Sanyo, Sharp, LG, Samsung, Panasonic, Vizio, Phillips, etc produce thier own products? They may be designed and engineered by themselves but most are produced by contract manufacturers. This is true for virtually all consumer products. This is why we need government oversight especially since the dollar is "God" and the bottom line is the only concern for manufacturers especially products relating to human health.
Big companies, like Conagra and this guy runninng a huge egg production company don't care about much more than the bottom line. They sell-we get sick.
You have your free will! No one is force feeding you!

On who's part? The government?
A class action suit of about 1500 members, all of whom got sick.
You're defending this companies right to sell tained food? Why?
Dan, shut the @!$%# up. No one cares about your sick comments.

Rick - you didn't kick him out - he is still there! Maine forced him to vaccinate his birds. Iowa has no egg quality assurance plan.
I hope they are investigating his ohio farms too.
How is it even remotely possible that the farm got these test results, but the on-site FDA inspector didn't????
same way the inspectors of the deepwater horizon got there results, rolled up in benjamins with a side of meth......

Dr B, now that's telling Dan something maybe that he should have know, if you don't like how the country is RAN, leave, I'm sure there are many places DAN could go too .....
He should have to eat those eggs. (all of them at one sitting)
You need to get some facts from farmers on that mr don! Start by asking zeeman egg farm in utah about government regulation!
Dan
1. Corporations primary goals are to make as much money as possible.
2. If consumer health is supported by corporate profit goals, they will act to promote consumer health. If not, consumer health goes.
3. Worker pay and health are similarly supported by corporate goals.
4. Government regulations may be the only way to assure both consumer and worker health.
Dan, would you please stop characterizing yourself as an Arizonan? People who place poison out for the public deserve to be removed from society, not rewarded for it.
DR B You are a good Dimocrat!!!!
bicfj
I'm not surprised, really... all they were concerned about were their profit margins, and not food safety.
Really? And who is it that buys the eggs? It is called consumer demand!
Dan, you really create some weak arguments.
Dan, your rant displays the uninformed raving of someone who merely want to impose his views on others by drawing attention to himself.
Because no human being should ever get sick! The government will heal everyone! blah blah blah
Dan
Dude, you're the perfect Corporate Lemming.
Business will regulate itself! Yeah Dan just like wall street did and the banks did and the Oil companies have.
I realize that what I am about to post is in vain for all the government lemmings, but try using some self responsibility and check with your local nutritionist or even your doctor for the steps you can take to prevent sicknesses from foods! Thank you and good bye!
Wow....years and years of inbreeding certainly will bring out the best in some people. Keep living that dream Dan!!!!
Don....
He should eat a dozen of his own eggs.................raw!!!!
Dan ... certainly those who sicken and die will not buy from your farm, but why should that have to happen and how many lives would it take before it was discovered who was doing it?
Dan is an example of the average American. Ill-informed, under-educated and cares little about anything other than themselves.
@halseyjr61.... I'm sure he's most definitely a fascist Rethuglican.
Dan --
If everyone was honest, and was concerned about the health and welfare of their fellow human beings, then no, we would not need govt.
Lets make him drink some of those tainted eggs raw
Greed is the whole country's religion! That's what's wrong! Even the people responsible for product safety are corrupt!!! Every person that got sick should sue him and make him pay! Also, make him eat his own disgusting eggs and work in his own waste! There are no consequences for anything anymore, except being a middle class, taxpaying citizen. We pay for everybody the rich and the poor. What will they do when we're gone?
Wonder how many people now eat only scrambled eggs? What a twat of a company.
Throw away or return eggs? I don't think they want the ones back I ate yesterday.
Shut them DOWN! Or fine them so much their ears will ring! It's the only way to make the point. They literally threatened millions of people!
maybe he and the company should be charged 2nd degree murder for people that died
no one died from this outbreak.
