Interesting story. Pharmaceutical companies are COMPANIES trying to make money. That's why Glaxo wouldn't give their drug for test against competitor's product...it will cut into their market share.
I have nothing to do with this drug and do not make any any money suggesting it. I only want to help the millions if asthma sufferers in the United States.
There was studies going on regarding D3 and asthma; they were scheduled to be completed just this past August - so, we'll have to wait a bit for the results of the study. They are looking at if D3 helps improve a pt's response to steroid medications.
From personal experience, D3 doesn't help me respond to steroid treatments for my asthma any better. That doesn't mean it woudn't help others - and, furthermore, we'll have to wait to see if it made a difference for most asthma pts in th study.
I have recently added D3 to my cocktails of medicines as my doctor suggested this to me. It has not affected my asthma at all which was cured with the method I use and are suggesting.
I hope the next step is in to curing Asthma. oh gawd, I hate being asthmatic, it's barely controlled by the quick rescue which I have to uee every other day (>.<)
I know what you mean. I take Symbicort, Singulair, Claritin, and Spiriva everyday to control my asthma and I still have to take my rescue inhaler nearly every day. I'm one of the pt's whose doctor has prescribed Spiriva off label for my asthma. I can tell if I miss any one of my daily medications - those are days I use the rescue inhaler several times a day.
I'm an asthmatic (five medications daily, three of them inhaled), and was having trouble controlling daily symptoms until I changed the antihistamine I was using. According to my pulmonologist, Claritin works only for about a third of the population, and that might be why you're having so many breakthrough symptoms. I was having the same problem until I was put on Xyzal (the non-sedating version of Zyrtec, but prescription-only, unfortunately). It really seems to work well, since it reduced my need for a rescue inhaler to the times when I get a virus. Hope this information helps you. Asthma is just horrible.
cg- thanks for the suggestion. I've been on Zyrtec - and my asthma symptoms were worse than with the Claritin. Asthma is horrible. I do have crazy allergies (some are pretty easy to avoid, others not so much), so my IgE levels are always really high. At my last appointment, my doctor said if it's not improving shortly (I switched to symbicort not that long ago), he wants to try Xolair for me. On one hand, I don't like the idea of going in every 2 - 4 weeks for a shot; on the other hand, if I could not go use my inhaler as often I would love it.
I have thrown away my "rescue inhaler Albuterol" as my Brazilian doctor suggested as I was giving me tachycardia for the 50 years I had used it. Since I have used my asthma cure I have not had an attack of tachycardia since.
I agree with you, which is why my Brazilian doctor said to me, and I quote his words which was "WHAT KIND OF DOCTORS DO YOU HAVE IN THE UNITED STATES" Why don't they know how to PREVENT asthma? I replied that they are only interested in making money and do not care about helping their patients.
First off, anyone who, even sarcastically, mentions that asthma is all in one's head or a moral defect performs a disservice for all asthmatics whether their asthma is under control or not. I have been told all my life that my asthma was all in my head. I was even told this by a fellow respiratory therapist!
My asthma is under control now after spending alot of time and effort trying new medications in many different combiations. Right now, I take two puffs of Symbicort twice a day and Singulair before I go to bed. I problem use my rescue inhaler about once a month, usually after dining out.
Be patient with your medication mix and keep trying until you find some combination that works....it may take time. If Spiriva works, great. On label or off, find the combination that gives you relief. Singulair was introduced to control asthma and physicians found that patient's allergy symptoms improved so now it is marketed toward allergy patients too.
You say you use your inhaler about once a month, usually after dining out - do you think that's because of something you ate or something else? When I visit my parents, we use to request non-smoking sections at restaurants (none of us smoke) - but if oher people are smoking, I really have problems with my asthma. So, we don't eat out at restaurants that still allow smoking.
I gave up on the "rescue inhaler" and use the one I suggest twice a day, once in the morning and again before bedtime and have not had any wheezes for all of the years I have been using it. By the way I smoke 2 cigars daily, with no side effects. and being near cigarette smoke does not bother me at all.
I had been plagued with asthma for over 50 years.
Every doctor has told me (and my daughter, who also has asthma) to use Albuterol.
We just kept puffing all day year after year.
I was in Brazil to have some plastic surgery, but the surgeon said I must see a
cardiologist before he started cutting. I would guess he did not want me to die on his watch.
The cardiologist said my heart was fine, but said I hear lots of noise in your lungs.
He asked what I have been using. I said Albuterol
He gave me a prescription that prevented the wheezing
This is FLUIR (fumarato de formoterol) which is a small capsule of powder that is inhaled twice a day.
This was in fifteen years ago, and I nor my daughter have not had even a hint of a wheeze since.
My cost per day is $ 2.00 for the combination. medication is cheap in Brazil.
Schering-Plough makes the FLUIR, They do not make this here for the American Market
as they much more money in selling Albuterol.
I spoke to the FDA and asked why they do not approve this and they replied by saying
"Schering Plough makes both this as well as Albuterol. and they make much more money in
selling Albuterol. Then they said, If you were Schering Plough, what would you sell
therefore Schering Plough never applied for FDA approval for FLUIR"
The Brazilian Cardiologist who gave me this information said
"What kind of doctors do you have in the US"?
I told him my opinion which is that they are only interested in making money
and have no interest in helping their patients.
He has heard that before from Many Americans.

I am a firm believer that asthma is an allergic reaction of the respiratory system. there is something that causes the imflamation and thus asthma. For a life long asthmatic who never got relief from any medication, I should know. it was only after I went to an ENT in Trumbull, CT who specializes in allergies that I found relief. We did allergy tests (scratch and blood) and then started on a sublingual allergy drops (non FDA approved, althou broadly used in Europe) that I found relief. I used to take Allegra, singulair, advair and albuterol. Now I use NOTHING..completely medication free and all after 3 years of the sublingual allergy drops (same as allergy shots, just a different delivery method).
My problem with Spiriva was the "Handihaler" did not perform for me as my physician indicated it would. My doctor had good hopes for the medicine, but the delivery system did not work for me. I am a severe asthmatic, my asthma is congenital. I subscribe to many medicines for my asthma. Over my lifetime I have found "asthma" gets accustomed to the medicine your are taking after a time, then it is necessary to take a different path to maintain effectiveness.
Interesting story. Pharmaceutical companies are COMPANIES trying to make money. That's why Glaxo wouldn't give their drug for test against competitor's product...it will cut into their market share.
Well, the thing is if your drug is shown to be /better/ than the competition, then you stand to make big money. It's very much a roll of the dice...

Have they done any studies with vitamin D3 concerning this? I would be curious to know how it compares to the big pharma solutions.

Hasn't anyone read Robert Adams's' "Horseclans" novels? Don't you all know astham is a moral defect and not a real disease? /end sarcasm font

The medicine you're taking is sold in the US under the trade name "Foradil".
One of the ingredients in the one I am suggesting does indeed contain Foradil, however it is much less expensive than purchasing Foradil.
