I had a kidney transplant that lasted 22 years, I have now been on the list for 3 years waiting for a new one. I have been told by several people including nurses that under Obama healthcare I will probably wait a long time because of my age, I'm 60 years old. I was told that organs will be allocated by age, the younger you are the shorter the wait. I also read that U.N.O.S. will change its criteria, making it harder for diabetics and people over 64 to get kidneys. I lost my kidney because of antibodies, I will have to receive antibody transfusions before my next transplant. I have no living donor so in order to lead a normal life I will have to receive a cadaver kidney. My brother is also on dialysis, my father died from kidney failure. Because my wife works Medicare won't pay for some of my medications, so we pay about 900.00 dollars a month for my medications, some people can't afford this so they go without. When I had my transplant I never missed a day of work for 22 years, our life was really good, now that I am on dialysis and not working we are slowly losing everything. Disability doesn't pay much, plus I lost my benefits. Dialysis costs 30,000. a month, medications for transplants is about 1,000. a month plus people can go back to work and get off disabiliy. Maybe the people making these decisions should visit a dialysis center and talk to people on dialysis.
