Thanks for your observation. Facts are facts. People need to be constantly reminded of the risks they are potentially taking and make changes in their behavior (condoms, safe sex practices, etc.) to make sure they are safe regardless of their sexual orientation.
Greater emphasis needs to be put on safe sex education...and I don't mean teaching kids to not have sex...they're going to have it anyway...and I hope they have safe sex.
Newsreports like this one need to take center stage so that all people know the risks involved in HIV/AIDS and that they need to practice safe sex regardless of their own sexuality.

The reality is that gay people don't have the same support systems and rights that everyone else gets to take for granted. And that is going to have far-reaching impacts in ways that may be unexpected.
Think about it - if you were a gay person that was raised in a home with someone like "real packer fan" as your dad. And you grew up hating yourself because you thought something was really wrong with you. And so you married a woman to try to be someone you aren't, and you think that you can just repress all of your feelings. And that who you are at your core eventually takes over, and you decide to go out and have sex with another man. But because you are so f'd up about it, you probably aren't well-versed in how to have safe sex, or you do it in a unsavory environment, with some random guy because you're scared to death someone is going to find out. And then afterwards you are too terrified to discuss it with your family doctor, and too terrified to think that maybe something has happened. But you can't stop and you keep having unsafe sex, and before long you've got HIV yourself, and you've contributed to the HIV in the gay community. And put your family at risk.
It just seems so obvious to me that we should let all people have the same rights, and we should be open with everyone about human sexuality. By making certain activities ilicit, you are restricing the ability of people to have healthy and stable sexual and emotional relationships.
Finally, a statistic to remind everyone that you can't just target gay people for STD's. 1 in 4 young adults (age range 15-24) contracts an STD each year.

What is "scientific fact" is that animals of many, many species have been documented as having same-sex sexual activity. If that's not "natural" someone needs to tell nature. Moreover, if inability to procreate should preclude sex, then any woman who is infertile and any man who is sterile should not only abstain from sex, but WANT to - after all, it's "unnatural" for them to have sex if it's not for procreation, right? That would make their own sexual desires "unnatural". By your "logical thinking" birth control ought to be completely unnecessary, since only people who want to have children should have any desire to have sex.

As far as the repeated comment about gay sex being "unnatural", there are plenty of non biased studies to show you are wrong in your assertion. Folks like you are the ones that help add to the psychological demise of gay and lesbian youth. Suicide is the number 3 killer of teens 14-25. Gay and lesbian teens are at a 4x's higher risk. You tell someone long enough that they are bad, wrong, etc, and they will start to believe it. It's a basic psychological truth. Then after you have beat down and warped some young persons mind, then you can sit back and say, "See, I told ya." Well good for you. I'm glad that you take so much delight in destroying people for something they cannot change. And before someone says, "But you can change," not one non biased report has confirmed that except that the suicide rate among those trying to change exceeds those who do "change." Also, the relapse rate from "changed" has not be studied because they don't want anyone to know that the "change" is so miserable that the majority can't make it last.
Perversion and (unnatural) sex acts are synonymous. The same thing. Any same sex sexual contact is perversion and therefore unnatural and wrong, contrary to what is right. The "didn't know they had it" data seems a little fuzzy. I mean, EVERY person with HIV did not know they had it at one point or another, thats what the test is for. It's not like you skin turns blue when you come in contact with HIV, you need a test, and until then, you of course wont know you have it. Kind of a silly statistic.

The facts are clear and there is a much higher incidence of infection and transmission among this "High Risk" group. And yes, some people think homosexuality is wrong. It is their belief and maybe it is you who are the bigot for attacking their strongly held and sincere beliefs.

Here is an inconvenient truth for you. The truth is, it is not known what the real infection rate within the heterosexual community are because of low testing. Many AIDS related deaths in the heterosexual community are reported as pneumonia. As a RN I can tell you that HIV/AIDS is still a "dirty little secret" within the heterosexual community and when people die of AIDS, they wont report it because they don't want to cause grief for the family. Gays are more easily targeted because gays get more tested and more focus is put on gays because they are a smaller and more easily managed group of people for testing and research purposes.
Obamacare will fix it. Of course all the liberal greenie warmists keep saying there are too many people on Earth. So maybe Obamacare won't fix it after all.

In light of the current debate over repeal of the military policy "don't ask, don't tell" the 1 in 5 statistic is telling. In the military, each man needs to be a suitable blood donor, because we do ask our servicemen and women to go into harm's way and the man next to you may be asked to save your life by his donation. So there is a good reason for prohibiting sexually active homosexual men in the military as well as the prohibition on sexually active homosexuals serving as blood donors. Concealing a homosexual lifestyle does no one any favors so what is the solution? Military units segregated by sexual orientation? How do we treat all people with justice - which I suggest means allowing each person their freedom, so long as it does not detract from the freedom of those around them? Until a better solution is found, it seems the prohibitions are needed.

This stands to reason, because the first known case was in Republic of Congo, it has been known to exist for over 60 years.

As a gay man, this number does not surprise me in the slightest. Many gay men vehemently defend their lifestyle choices and assume all who dare criticize them are close minded and homophobic. This is pathetic.
While I agree that there is still a battle to be fought with regards to getting equal rights in this country, it does not justify 1 in 5 of us having a terminal disease that you catch from having vast amounts of unsafe sex.
Unfortunately the gay community is its own worst enemy. Everything about it is hyper sexualized, and if you are introduced to "the scene" at a young age you will begin to think this is the norm. Many heterosexuals are ignorant to not only what actually goes on but also to what is considered completely normal behavior.
A good example is gay dating websites. Mainstream sites are used (for the most part) for random sexual encounters. The profiles even have spaces where you put your fetishes and sexual positions. What kind of message does this send out to young gay men? These are not websites used by the fringe of our community, they are mainstream and it totally sends out the wrong message.
And to mpmorin78 regarding circumcision protecting you against HIV, this is totally wrong. Most men in the USA are circumcised yet we have far higher instances of HIV than Europe, where most men are not circumcised. Don't go around spreading this load of bull.

But, I'm curious....if there was another deadly sexually transmitted virus that had no cure that was passed on to other individuals most easily through vaginal sex, do you think there would be just as big a problem within the hetero community? I think a very strong argument could be made in answering "yes" to that question.
we live in a very sexualized society. sex is used as the primary tool to sell us almost everything. I do agree that within the gay community it's even more so, but, our society overall is all about sex.
Why is there such a high rate of aids infections in the big urban areas, like NYC....very simple because there are LOTS and LOTS of young sexually active people living in fairly close proximity to each other.....gay and straight. So, i think there is just as much sex going on with these young straight urban people, but, they, while are not totally safe from aids, have a smaller chance of contracting it.
So, im not so sure this is a "gay" issue, but rather a "human" issue. unfortunately, for the gay community though, it is a gay issue because anal sex is one of the best ways to spread the virus.

and I really cannot agree with you that heterosexuals have as much anonymous sex as gay men. every gay man i know has had WAY more sexual partners than any of my straight friends. mostly because it is readily available on the internet, at bars, at clubs, etc. this is not the case for heterosexuals.

I've had my share of "hookups" over the years. I've met some guys from these websites. But, I've also been in a committed relationship for the last 13 years.
You forget, this is still how a large % of gay men have to meet other gay men.....for large numbers, meeting on the "dl" is the only way they dare do something like that. Many are terrified of being found out....and all of them see no way for them to have a real relationship....so many of them resort to this kind of behavior. THAT is the real problem here. Yes there are subcultures who live as you see, but the reason most meet in the way they do is because there is no other acceptable way for them to do it....in their eyes. That is the sad thing. Condoms break. Stopping anal sex, the true culprit act spreading the disease, is the correct analysis.
