Great! One Republican would like to kill more people (like the egg contamination did) until the program is paid for. On the other hand, the GOP never paid for the Iraq war and killed a lot of people. Quite the quandry.
The fact that the Democrats could get the vote on the floor by calling for a procedural end to the debate is rediculous. If the Republicans would support this vote, then they should just get the Senator to stop his BS.
Neither will take action. It gets good Play for the Democrats to claim a Republican is holding up Food Safety Bill. If they call for the procedural vote to end debate, they will get blamed for passing a bill that is not paid for. Same will happen if the Republicans go after him and get him to drop his hold on the bill. They will be seen as fiscally weak. But, with the procedural vote, they would Allow enough middle of the road Republicans to vote for it so it passes.
Face, there will be more done during the lame duck session of congress than in the next 6 weeks.
For God's sake, why would anyone want to eat safe food?

This is patently untrue. This bill is NOT about Food Safety, though it falsely claims to be and it would require thousands of small family farms already producing organic and clean local foods to pony up for expensive tracking equipment that all the big AgraBiz companies already have, thus putting many of these small family farms out of business.
Nor will it improve food safety one bit. The recent food contamination problems you've been reading about in the news have ALL been the result of factory farming practices by the very same huge companies that already have this expensive equipment. All this bill will do is remove the small local farmers as competition, and remove your access to such safer, better produced food.
CALL YOUR SENATOR AND ASK HIM TO VOTE AGAINST S.510 if you value your organic and clean local foods!
(While you're at it, thank Senator Coburn for putting a hold on the bill and stopping the senate from treating this matter as 'Non controversial' and letting it become a back-door law without even voting on it.)

So... you'd like to see organic, local foods go away, along with the small family farms where they actually care for their animals properly and don't load them up with antibiotics, hormones, and feed them polluted food? (Would you want to eat that cow knowing it had been fed the leftovers of other diseased cows? That's what they are being fed on factory farms in many cases.)
This is exactly what will happen if the small farms are pushed out of farming entirely in favor of the same huge companies that have already been poisoning us.
If you would educate yourself on what the real food safety watchdog organizations are saying about this bill, rather than listening to the bought and paid for media spin on this, you might understand why a lot of ordinary people have already been calling their senators non stop the last few weeks asking them to put a hold on it. (More than 500,000 have already called their senators to oppose it while you were napping.)
Senator Coburn happens to be one of the few who has listened to the grass roots outcry instead of being bought out by big business interests like Monsanto. This bill is NOT A FOOD SAFETY BILL! If you would read the darn thing, you'd see that. The name is just a cover to sneak it through on us.

Brad, I also see you are very new to the vine, if you were able to follow any of my comments on food you would see that i promote Farm to Table. Eating closer to the farm is healthier for you. I am on facebook with Michael Pollan a true leader in this movement. I am member in good standing with the Slow food international. So i am not uneducated or napping when it come to this. what i want from our reps in Congress is to tell people why the bill is bad not just that it isn't paid for, one could presume that if it was paid for it would he might be inclined to vote for it..
Well if I misunderstood what you meant by your comment Mike, then I do apologize to you. I have been following this story myself on the back channels for quite a number of weeks and was quite stunned to see how this was being presented on MSN and how everyone appeared to be just accepting what they were being fed here without any further investigation.
However regarding honesty, I think maybe one also could consider whether what they are quoting Cobern as saying was his reason was really the ONLY reason he actually gave-- or the only piece they wanted to quote. It's quite common to make someone look bad by either misquoting them, or omitting part of what they said and only quoting the parts that suit them, especially in politics. MSN being huge, I have to imagine that they are not immune to pressure from large paying clients in how the news gets spun. And this one definitely has been spun in a way that would cause people who weren't already following this to think he was just being petty.

I've heard this argument before about the bill pushing small farmers out of business. I haven't seen anything in the proposed bill that would do that.

I can do without the tax cuts myself, but i am in a lower tax bracket. I just learned to live withing my means, way back when republicans deregulated banking and credit card industryand my rates jumped to 29.9% for no reason. So house is paid for and I have very little credi card debt.
We should know by now that republicans are both hypocrits and liars! But many voters are still believing their lies and hypocrisy!! Why am I not surprised that a gop senator would block a regulation to protect the public from food born illnesses!

I have been in an unrelated business field for 23 years that I have had to figure out how to pay for equipment before I purchased it. Had I not done the due diligence to figure in advance how to pay for the needed things, I would not have lasted 10 years, let alone 23 years. I had to close 25% of my business due to the rules and regulations implemented in the last 2 years because I could not afford the new cost of doing business. The analogy is the same for our government, figure out how to pay for it now before implementation so my grandchildren will not have to continue paying after I am dead and gone. I am so tired of the spend it now and print money to pay for it later mindset!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tom Coburn is a physician. It is surprising he would take a stand against Public Health.
He is looking out for his political contributors. And being a doctor does not make one a saint, as most doctors are in it for the money first, patient second, otherwise they would not prescribe unnecessary and dangerous prescriptions and unecessary surgeries. Coburn must not have been a very good doctor, or he still would be practicing.
Republicans hate America. Now, one of them will kill the rest of us...
