One woman who I worked with kept asking me to do her work for her "as a favor" until the very first time that I said I was already busy. Then she stalked over to her boss and told him that I wasn't being a 'team player' and I ended up getting a mark on my work record and having to do her work anyway.
I agree. I sometimes find myself apologizing to my boyfriend when he is making ME feel badly, in order to get a conversation started about what happened and each of our feelings. Because he truly doesn't get as upset as I do about things, I feel like I have to make the first move in a conversation in order to bring about resolution and understanding between us. "I'm sorry" is just an easy way to grab his attention and tell him "something was wrong here- let's fix it!"
"One woman who I worked with kept asking me to do her work for her "as a favor""
Actually, sounds like my wife. If I tallied up all the 'favors' she's asked for, vs all the favors I ask for, I think she'd be astonished how much more often she asks for help than I. And lord help me if I 'decline.'
Saying "I'm sorry" isn't necessarily apologizing. It can also be another way of saying "too bad!". I wonder what the researchers have to say about that...
Why are we wasting govt money on these stupid and insane "studies"?? Who the hell cares? Nothing is going to change, it's just more inane information put out for the masses, yet we keep paying for it. Gee, I wonder why we're broke.
This was a study done by a university in CANADA, probably paid for by the school and it's financial supporters or paid for by the student to get their degree. It doesn't have ANYTHING to do with the US government. Geez, read the article completely first, please. And try and educate yourself on exactly what the US government actually pays for....AND DOESN'T before going off the deep end with your anti-government spending tirade.
If you all are both women, I think you should both apologize. If one is a woman and the other is a man, GET A ROOM FOR ***SAKE! If you are both men, then RIGHT ON BRO! If you are Canadian, You GO! EH? If you are government workers defending your positions you are incestuous as I always suspected.
I live with a wife, 2 daughters, a widowed mother-in-law and a widowed mother. The only time I hear "I'm sorry" is when it comes out of my own mouth.
Wow! Hedjob, now there is something I never heard before! What a clever guy. I bet you keep everyone in stitches! You cannot only tell a funny joke, you can take one too! (and I can tell you where to put it.)
"I apologize, I'm sorry..... BUT!" If I'm sincere, the "BUT" is never the next word. "I apologize, I'm sorry if you feel that way, BUT..... I don't......" women are just as talented as men when it comes to being politically correct.... perhaps more so... which may explain why the study shows women apologize more frequrently -- then on the other hand, women may be better at getting a desired result with the apology. :):) Hehehehe.
Being "politically correct" is just another way for ANY PERSON to be two faced about how they really feel! That is why I think women might actually be a little more politically correct than men.
Here's an idea...try living your life in a manner so that apologies are unnecessary...just sayin'...try being less judgemental, less opinionated and less ignorant...it's a challenge...
From 30 years of context, my wife's 'I'm sorry' means ' go piss up a rope' - further taxing my limited interpersonal skills and poor negotiating abilities.
When a woman says "pardon me" it actually means "get the &%*^ out of my way, you worthless piece of garbage"; it's never the polite reqiest that it used to be years ago.
And when a woman driver signals that she wants to change lanes...GET OUT OF THE WAY.
I think you've crossed the line between humor and misogyny (hatred of women).
I haven't noticed that women mean anything except "pardon me" when they say "pardon me". Maybe some do. So do some men as well.
I've never noticed a particular gender bias in rude drivers, or if I have, I'd say it was more prevalent among young men. Maybe you just notice more when a woman does something aggressive or stupid
I think women of my generation (Baby Boomer) were raised to be always gracious and wary of offending. My women friends and I lament the loads of "Emily Post" rules our mothers drilled into us while our brothers were only expected to learn and practice the most basic etiquette. While my clothing, grooming, posture, modesty, body language and tone of voice had to be "just so," with my 3 brothers, only the most egregious offenses were corrected and all others excused with a sigh, "boys will be boys." I was also trained to say, "I'm sorry" to mean, "that's a shame" or "I feel badly that happened." It's no wonder women apologize more!
However, I am training myself out of over-apologizing (and the accompanying guilt) because I think others see it as a lack of confidence or authority rather than the cultural and generational "tic" it truly is.
The easy joke is that women are wrong more often. However, in this study, it may be their self evaluation that is wrong. But then, I'm always wrong. Just ask my ex. She'll tell you.
So men apologize less often because they think they have less to apologize for, according to the study. How convenient for men. The study shows that men are haughty, self-righteous, and self-serving. Not news to me.
CeCe3; I agree-Hated that thick emily post book my mother made me read. I felt there was a double standard when it came to teaching girls and boys. I tried to steer clear of that when raising my children. I never made them read E. Post either while still teaching them basic good manners.
By the time men figure out what they have done wrong, the door hit them where the good lord split them; that's all. Saying sorry is just a little too late and always a couple dollars short!
The inability to say sorry leads to divorce and bitter break ups. Men are worse gossips and their egos have more trouble dealing with rejection than women. They will go to great lengths to seek revenge even when they are wrong and one wonders why their are more men population in prison.. Start saying sorry sooner and bury the hacket in the proverbial.
Have to admit I did not spend time with proof-reading. So, sorry for that. Are we good? See not that hard to admit when I make an error. Now if only... As for generalizing, sure, but so did this article, and there are women who cheat and there are women who never say sorry. I was never cheated on. I just have run across a whole other catastrophic events that give me way too much understanding of human behavior.
It also is odd, when posters don't disagree with a comment, remarks of grammer and improper use of punctuation are not made. My question is why defend men as a general group like you have and suspect that I am messed up? There are very unsavory people out in the world that do anything, if they can get by with it, to get what they want. Women now, do not defend other women as if they come from the same loin. What is more dangerous?
Odd is the right word as in really odd not to mention wrong. Its backwards. men are in prison becasue of women and the games they play. They react to the bull and get in trouble.. Oh and really are messed up is more like it...
Your double-negatives are still putting a wall over any point you're trying to make.
This article is generalized? Really?! Like omg, thats what studies do? So much easier if they surveyed every man and woman.
Your points are too flawed to even begin discussion of how wrong they are. The only truth to it was there are more men in prison than women and I don't know why thats true.
Why is this true? Prolly, it is the traditional gender characterization that the male gender need to feel power and control.
As for generalization, no, that is not what research is designed to come to a conclusion. At best this is a theory, and there is very little significant data to override the debunking of this finding.
It appears that the wall is inexperience, not on my part, and this was not academia's best stab at research findings, therefore, street smarts applies.
Dave, I agree with you. Men seek raw power and control, and women through social status have become coniving as traditional gender characterizations. The comments posted about "I'm sorry." not meaning what it says is more true than the title of the article. More like, 'I'm sorry. Give me another chance (so I can drive that stake further into your soul - make sure you know who really has the power and control).'
A relative stated this...'Don't do anything you need to be sorry for.' Eventhough it ends with a preposition, :D sure makes awesome impact for one of thee most profound statements.
LOOOL, this was a great article, despite the fact that they are wasting money & time, though it makes me laugh so hard, MEN, lets make a revolution, we take no responsiblities?!!!! Since when?!!!!!!
My ex and I were married for 23 yrs. I was a good wife and mother. 23 yrs later and several emails from him confessing to numerous affairs he wonders why I haven't made amends. I said when I get an apology maybe there will be something to amend. He said "I have nothing to be sorry about". Case and point. Men are self serving, no good for anything stains on this earth.
You should apologize over your generalizations and inability to forgive. Even if he apologized, I feel you would reject it anyways(why wouldn't you, he cheated on you). I think the apology you're looking for is just a power-trip.
But know not all men will cheat. Just as all women won't be faithful.
Wow Glenda!! What do you say to the millions of guys out there that think the same thing about women that you do about men? That you're all just stains on the earth? There are lots of them. It's exactly that type of attitude that helps guys along with their thinking they haven't really done anything wrong. I think it would be obvious that with an attitude like yours no matter what a guy does he'll do it wrong in your eyes. He could win a $100,000,000 lottery and you'd whine that he didn't win enough money. So, why should I bother to apologize to someone who's obviously nothing but a hater of all men? Especially one that generalizes all men due to the actions of only one?
well If I(a man) munched on a forbidden apple and got us kicked out of the Garden of Eden for all of eternity, i would probably be more apologetic about stuff as well.
Maybe some women. In my thrity tyear marriage my wife has started every fight because of jealousy about everything from other women to just not getting enough attention which I give constantly and everythin gin between Sorry whoever wrote this is not even close to correct. My wife has never said sorry for ruining many weekends and would not dream of apologizing. Women in general are a pian for some reason try to turn the situation around and make the guy the wrong doer. Sorry this is a thumbs down...
this study is obviously skewwed. if a woman were able to say a simple sorry it would have save many an arguement/ relationship/ marriage I have dated women who knew they were wrong and to this day would never admit it or say sorry for any action. However would tell friends of hers that she did wrong and was sorry, actually now that I remember all those women were able to tell others but not me the one the were committing the offensive act too. So maybe a real study needs to be done that is not based on each persons diary/ perspective of what they are doing. but rather a recording some how that each party is unaware of
Women apologize as a socializing and relationship building effort - not necessarily because their actually apologizing for a wrong doing.
exactly, they may say it, but they don't mean it.
They say a lot ofthings that they don't mean.
One woman who I worked with kept asking me to do her work for her "as a favor" until the very first time that I said I was already busy. Then she stalked over to her boss and told him that I wasn't being a 'team player' and I ended up getting a mark on my work record and having to do her work anyway.
What a b****!
I agree. I sometimes find myself apologizing to my boyfriend when he is making ME feel badly, in order to get a conversation started about what happened and each of our feelings. Exactly. I say "I'm sorry" quite often and it's not necessarily as an apology.
(I'm a male)
Is because they have more to be sorry about?
Sorry... obvious remark. Couldn't help it.
LOL
Good one! :o)
The survey returned wrong information.
Why are we wasting govt money on these stupid and insane "studies"?? Who the hell cares? Nothing is going to change, it's just more inane information put out for the masses, yet we keep paying for it. Gee, I wonder why we're broke.

My bad, Hedwig, I now realize you are a female. Mea culpa. No wonder your response was so b*****y.
"I apologize, I'm sorry..... BUT!" If I'm sincere, the "BUT" is never the next word. "I apologize, I'm sorry if you feel that way, BUT..... I'm sorry.
From 30 years of context, my wife's 'I'm sorry' means ' go piss up a rope' - further taxing my limited interpersonal skills and poor negotiating abilities.
You need to remember that old philosophical question:
The answer I get from any women of whom I ever asked the question is "Probably."
...keep smiling.
When a woman says "pardon me" it actually means "get the &%*^ out of my way, you worthless piece of garbage"; it's never the polite reqiest that it used to be years ago.
And when a woman driver signals that she wants to change lanes...GET OUT OF THE WAY.

Sorry... I think this is a tremendous waste of time. Nothing more than a dissertation topic, and a C project at that. Homelessness?
No apology necessary.
I think women of my generation (Baby Boomer) were raised to be always gracious and wary of offending. My women friends and I lament the loads of "Emily Post" rules our mothers drilled into us while our brothers were only expected to learn and practice the most basic etiquette. They may say it, but rarely mean it. It is their way of ending an argument why still feeling superior.
You said that already...but don't aplogize.
The easy joke is that women are wrong more often. However, in this study, it may be their self evaluation that is wrong. But then, I'm always wrong. Just ask my ex. She'll tell you.

It was meant as a joke...curb the attitude.
Self-righteous? Oprah, The View, Barbara Walters
Haughty? Atleast 4 aisles of beauty products in most stores
Self-serving? Do I really need to explain.
I have always heard that there are 2 people in a marriage; the one who is right, and the man.
Gay marriages aren't the best examples to obtain information..
CeCe3; I agree-Hated that thick emily post book my mother made me read. I felt there was a double standard when it came to teaching girls and boys. I tried to steer clear of that when raising my children. I never made them read E. Post either while still teaching them basic good manners.

Wow, there are really some bitter people posting on this topic.
Generalize much?
Your grammar and improper use of punctuation made it hard to read...But are you saying every failed marriage is a mans fault?
I feel bad that some guy messed you up so badly for you to think that way.
Have to admit I did not spend time with proof-reading. So, sorry for that. Are we good? See not that hard to admit when I make an error. Now if only... Dear God,
Can I have my rib back!
Heh..
Amazingly enough Cody..there is but one bone in the entire human body that will grow back if it is removed.
You guessed it ! lol ( not ribbing you either)
They obviously didn't use my wife in this study. Probably cause she was in the kitchen making me a sandwich, am I right fellas? o/ \o
I hope so. Because your wife sure as hell isn't in my kitchen
It may be the case in some instances; but not mine. I have been married for 33 years and my wife has said it 1 time and she thought I was asleep then!
Maybe some women.
