LMAO on this one. Segways for the military. For What? Are they goingto go out into the battle field with these idiotic toys and fight.
Just another attempt to sell a bad product to the US Government that will be dumb enough to start buying this piece of junk.
All these Segways do is make people too lazy to walk from point A to point B, and creating another generation of lazy people that will have poor blood circulation.
My nephew was injured in Iraq and had a 8 inch below the knee amputation. He was a recipient of one these Segways and loves it so does his wife and daughter.
He needs a prosthesis, not a Segway. Get a leg and keep walking. Just an overall bad invention that makes people too lazy to walk.
Watch Wall-E and ask yourself if that's what you want to become. Fat people in wheelchairs.
To the donor, thank you for your gift to our Veterans. I am from New Hampshire and am very familiar with the Segway, and its inventor. Condolences to your family. God Bless.

I have always wondered what kind of free press the USA has. While people die in Haiti, the USA is behind a Coup in Ecuador, thousands die of famine worldwide , the press in the USA worries about non-sense. Why the press don't tell the truth about all the miseries caused by the USA in the world, why the USA still has colonies in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans?
There are stories about Haitian poverty in newspapers all the time, and about food shortages. And I doubt Ecuadorian military officers are under US command.
"The Segway is among the safest, if not the safest, mobility devices out there," said Kerr.
Number of Injuries in just the George Washington emergency room between April 2005 and November 2008, 41. Of those, 10, or 24 percent, were admitted to the hospital and four were rushed to the intensive care unit. see http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39382682/
The number of 41 injuries already makes them as DANGEROUS as a motorcycle, unless the DC Segways have traveled further than 100+thousand miles. You can compare the numbers for Segways to these statics.
Injury rate per 1 million miles travelled * walking-3.9 * Bicycle-7.3 * Motorcycle-551 * Car-1.5
Deaths per 1 million miles travelled * walking-0.2 * Bicycle-3.7to12.6 * Motorcycle-27.6 * Car-1.1
What I would like to see is the TOTAL number of operating Segways and the TOTAL numbers of Deaths and Injuries. Then a person could really judge now safe they are.
I don't know of any more than this one report of a death from a Segway. You also have to remember that many Segways are used in businesses and multiples get drives around constantly for long periods of time (that can put a lot of miles on them). The only statistic I recall about the number of Segways was that there were over 50,000 of them (going from memory on that one). Given how rediculous many people think Segways are I have a feeling the media would love to report more on Segway injuries or deaths whenever/if they happen.
With only one reported death from operating the device and 41 injuries (only 10 serious) in a little over 3.5 years I don't see how they can be considered dangerous with more than 50,000 sold. "Dangerous" is relative, and given how many people die each year from various things, this 1 death and 41 injuries looks safe enough for me (I just wish I had enough money to afford a Segway, not that I'd want to buy one).
Hey , I ride motorcycles, SCUBA, and do rock climbing, so I'm not risk adverse.
Just do not state it is the 'safest mobility device' when it obviously is not.
Does it have a useful purpose? Plenty of people think so and if I was a amputee I would use one. But I would rather have a motorcycle, it is cheaper and is better suited for my purposes.
Newsvine does seem to be self censoring, a lot lately.
hello newwdonsvine-we think the segway admin should consider manufacturing in canada-as ottawa has substancial R&D program-so if research budget to start plant was say $25,000,000[25mmcdn[then up to 75% could be returned to corp-in 90 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i see mr heseldon was ww2 fighter pilot-or still flying today-he has vets patriotism-so do i[age 73-ww2 rcaf]they can read my comments-jdenishuggard@hotmail.com........vcv,bc,canada
Ok- there are about 15 comments on the article now- and not one slamming Obama yet!
Come on! That's just not what we expect these days! It seems like the more usual ratio on any discussion line is 2 or 3 on topic to 1 or 2 "Bama haters".
Where are the wing nut tea party / Glen Beck believers / republican fat cats trying to manipulate public opinion to protect their control of everything money /"business" related? Is it too early in the day for innuendo, fact distortion and outright lies in the names of God and Country (and protecting the Cash Cows)?
I don't believe for even one second they haters will ignore ANY opportunity to get their message of rage and fear instilling bull-oney in front of the uninformed and dim witted public to gain control over their thoughts and votes.
Probably by the time I post this remark there will be a couple Haters up allready- and within 20 minutes my comments will be "collapsed by community" because they can't allow anyone to question their motives or tactics....
So a person donates 5 million dollars of services to hurt people and all you jerks find something bad to say. You all need to go and stand on the front lines for a while. Maybe the sight of your friend getting blown up or shot would change your mind. Who would want to come home to a bunch of jerks like you. Not one person there tries to get hurt, but they do. There are people working there with one leg blown off and are on a fake leg. At least they are working and not complaining. Someone tries to make it easier on them using his own money and accidentally dies and people make jokes. Hail to the braindead!!
A distracted person operating ANY vehicle is a tragedy about to happen. This, sadly, seems to have been the case with Mr. Heselden.
My Segway is a fantastic device on which I travel to the gym every day. I give most anyone who seems interested a chance to become familiar with it by getting on and going back and forth (with my hands on the handle bar). Most people are a bit intimidated by it at first but become more comfortable after giving it a try for the first time. There are those individuals who cannot or will not follow the simple instructions I give. It seems their preconceived notions and/or fears about how it works get in the way. Those are the types of people I don't allow to stay on for very long. Some people are just not good candidates for operating the Segway or any other vehicle. They should NEVER operate a moving vehicle as they present an unacceptable level of danger to specifically to themselves and society in general.
Then, there are the "he needs a prosthesis, not a Segway" types who seem to believe they know just what others should be doing (but don't).
there are some really ignorant editors on this site, and delete comments for the most petty reasons and without basis even if something is a valid statement and not offensive.
the next thing they will delete is if someone says salt and pepper is white and black.
Safe my ASS !!
You are CORRECT see comment 10 this article.

Did he leave a memo (Not Safe) on the way down from the cliff on his Segway.

A great contribution to our veterans. Mr. Heselden must have been a good person.
This is in addition to the 500 donated earlier. This is the first I have heard of this. How many other things has he done that no one knows about?
