Dawnm's post was originally much longer, but since she started following the new "Cleanse and Detox your Post" regimen, we've all been impressed by how lean her new posts have become. Fabulous, darling, your post looks wonderful. (It's a shame she can't seem to lose that stubborn last letter, though, isn't it)
Hee hee, sorry. I couldn't resist! Forgive me, dawnm.
no kidding...name one anybody should really emulate. All in this article are the ones we say, "this is how NOT to be." And unfortunately, that is the way most of Hollywood is. Spare me.
Yeah no kidding! Celebs are definitely not role models! They are just people whom are constantly in the media spot light, with hire tax brackets! Woo hoo! Not!!!!
I just about fell off my chair! What kind of shallow sad people hold up celebrities as role models. They're the LAST group of people you want to emulate. I'm sure there are exceptions, but the list of kooks plastering the talk shows and tabloids are a mess!
no kidding...name one anybody should really emulate.
I think Brad Pitt's work in New Orleans, after Katrina was commendable... and his wife Jolie does good things as well... they don't seem overly vain, or egocentric either... Drew Barrymore has done some work against world hunger too.... and all three of them have donated millions to charity...
There are others as well... but I will concede that it's not a very long list...
Most of the women stars today look like bobble heads. Their heads are twice the size of their bodies. Keep in mind extremely thin women can end up with major bone problems later in life.
Jchoney, What century are you living in that you don't know it's fairly common for both celebrity and non-celebrity couples to divorce and even to have long-term, committed relationships without being married? (Some of the most successful marriages I know are not the couples' first.) From every reliable report, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are devoted and stable parents - and they have done far more good in the world than most celebrities. Enough, I should think, for their marital status to not define who they are.
RE, Branjolina....c'mon, this is so old. He left an unhappy marriage. If she is worried about this (and I will assume it is important to her) and if she is conservative, she better dumb most of the GOP as they play the marriage-go-round more than anyone....Newt 3x, Rush 4x, the list goes on.
Does it really matter who is with who and when and how many kids? No one talks this way about Joe Blow down the street, most people probably don't even know him. I have never ever understood why people are so involved in "celebrities" personal lives. Yah sure some celebrities do good work for charity and that's all commendable and everything, does that mean that they're personal life should be aired and we should all be worried? Nope! Anyone remember what Stephen Hawking wore to the seminar he spoke at that one time? Oh? He didn't make a movie? Oh, well I guess he isn't important then. =P
Here we go again. The problem with these celebs is that they have WAAAy too much time and money, and that's why they go on these weird diet regimens-because they can. I wonder why they even post this garbage on their twitter sites, as if we really care-we are so far out of their league, and most of us can never afford to do half the stuff these jerks do, even if it was reasonably healthy.
Spending your short time here on earth not enjoying and depriving yourself is very sad indeed, as food is one of life's pleasures. I may be overweight, but at least that piece of cheescake in my fridge will put a big smile on my face at the end of the day!
Yes, they are talking about them because of idiots like myself who read up on this stuff. Have you noticed how outrageous these so called "celebs" have become? And they will continue to do so to attract attention to themselves because that’s where the money is. And in order to continue to shock us all, they go into drugs and other substances to outdo themselves. If they want to help humanity, they should start a campaign against use of hard drugs and the likes, only then they will be taken seriously and we won’t have these drug wars where thousands get killed in order to satisfy their insatiable appetite. Just as they talk about keeping fit with their far out diets, they should do the same for their drug use.
In this day and age, who isn't "overweight" in at least someone's opinion? There are tons of skinny women who look like complete garbage walking around showing off their complete lack of a figure. And it's lucky for them that it's fashionable because many of them have difficulty putting ON weight and it can be just as frustrating for them to control as it is for heavier people.
I'm not a hippo, but only because I don't have a car and I have to walk everywhere when my bike gets stolen. Otherwise, my love of cookies and chocolate cake with fudge frosting and ice cream and birthday cupcakes when it's not my birthday and chocolate covered espresso beans and raspberry cheesecake and a pocket always full of m&ms would turn me into a serious threat to the infrastructure of this city. Give me a car and I'll give you a monster.
If I were famous I would tweet that I was on the dog crap and mop water diet just to see how many people would then go out and eat dog crap and chase it down with mop water.
You don't even need to be famous... I guarantee that at least one or two people will read your post, and for at least a few seconds, seriously consider doing that.
That is hilarious!! I bet there would be tons of people doing it. You would have mop water sold in stores found in classy little glass bottles for the low low price of $345 ea. LOL And this Tweeting, I am so tired of hearing about these self- involved, narcissistic celebrities and what they do. Like hearing them on the news, internet and talk shows is not enough. God, make it stop!!
"Celebrities are great role models but..." Really?.... REALLY!!!? I stopped reading the article at that point. Next time, please find a reference that has respectable judgement. Celebrities are AWFUL role models. So we should: smoke cigarettes, binge drink, do illicit drugs, have affairs, hire prostitutes, live lavishly greedy/overabundant lifestyles and use our lives to make a lot of garbage entertainment just like the 'great role models' of Lohan, Spears, Pitt, Woods, GaGa, Hilton, Madonna, M. Gibson, et al?
i just love how the female celebrities have a baby and say i never worked out, all this weight just fell off, i have a very fast metabolism, i always eat whatever i want, i pig out all the time! thats BS and we all know it! Oh, you mean being a size 0 and all my bones showing is how not normal, having my babies out of wedlock is not normal?
Well, I ran into the bathroom and puked up all my lunch when I saw the picture of how slim and svelte Demi Moore is. But that was BEFORE I noticed the "n't" on the end of "should."
So that means I should get rid of all that acai berry stuff? And my thighmaster? And those electrodes that I strap to my fat to zap it all into muscle? And should I finally eat something? I can't drink the poisonous tap water, or the poisonous bottled water that kills all the baby seals, and the mop water that I've been using (thanks, Jeffor!) keeps mucking up my blender when I try to make those special Kombucha drinks that everybody is so keen on!
I think looking to the famous as role models has been going on for a lot longer than most of us think.
I once read that Anne Frank (of the Diary of Anne Frank) had pictures of the young queen (or princess, I can't remember) of England posted up on her wall. It's not much different than young girls of today putting up pictures of their favorite singers.
The important thing is to maintain your sense of self and not follow everything someone does, just because they are famous. You can like someone and admire them without changing who you are.
Bravo! I'd like to add that my children and any children I raise will know that celebrities and athletes are not role models. Period. My husband and I are their role models and do our best to surround them with people who can also be examples of integrity, honor and compassion. Perfect example of why children shouldn't look up to celebrities: our 2 year old son who LOVES golfing and watching golf with my husband, would get so excited every time he saw Tiger Woods. Even before the "incident", we thought it was sweet, but since we're not the kind to pray our children are the "next" Tiger, Kobe or any other athlete, we didn't make a big deal to him about it. Our respect for these men and women (actresses, singers, athletes, etc.) for being skillful in their craft is and always will be exactly that - respect. I hope my boys see their father and grandfather and hear the stories of their great grandfathers as examples of how to be men.
Do one simple thing at a time. Try cutting sugar & corn syrup. (Ok that's 2 things) It's tough, but you'll see & feel results faster, and be better off for it!
And salt. After a couple of weeks of a low-salt diet, you'll find processed and restaurant foods virtually unpalatable. If you can't stand eating those things, it's pretty hard to be overweight and unhealthy.
RE: Celebs as role models, I don't really want to be a nasty bony size 0/2. I'm just fine being a healthy size 6!
Add Caffeine to that list of things you can drop from your diet to feel better. As Kash said salt helps as well, but its sooo hard to drop. I was able to give up Caffiene but I am still struggling with salt (Im Diabetic so I havent tasted sugar or corn syrup for years).
For me, I don't care about sugar or corn syrup. People make such a huge deal about it and it generally makes up very little of your actual caloric intake. Unless, of course, you are eating ice cream, cake, cookies, etc., all the time. I drink one cup of coffee in the morning and use one teaspoon of natural cane sugar. That's about 15 calories. You burn that just blinking your eyes. Most people's calories that result in weight gain come from the complex carbohydrates...bread, potatoes, rice, etc. People just eat a lot of that stuff with nearly every meal. Yes, you need them just like you need fat and protein. But many, especially women, love their carbs. "God no, can't eat that fat, but feed me those carbs!"
My boss has always been a fad dieter, but the one thing consistent is no fat. I tell her, "you have to eat some fat...it is needed for all the cells in your body to be healthy...so they can absorb fat soluble vitamins. She doesn't listen and she has this wrinkled unhealthy look. Add to that no exercise and the loss of muscle tissue from not eating protein and fat properly and she is a 100lb skinny fat person. Everything jiggles and sags, but she fits in those small clothes. No muscle tone what so ever. Then she complains that she doesn't feel good and she hates the way her skin looks and she may have to get plastic surgery. But she is the dieting guru...don't tell her anything because she already knows. Insanity, just like these stars.
In my opinion, as a general caloric intake rule, your diet should consist of roughly 50 percent protein (lean meats/fish/poultry with some fat still in it, nuts, cheese, eggs), 30 percent carbohydrates (mostly complex from vegetables and fruits with small amounts of "starches" and sugars OK) and 20 percent fat (from olive oil, fruits like avocado, nuts and meats/fish/poultry). Protein is needed to repair every cell in your body. Fat is needed for repair as well as transporting vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K into your body's cells. Fat is what makes your skin and hair healthy. Example: My boss eats nearly no fat at all, but she takes mega doses of vitamin D because she has osteoporosis. When she gets a blood test, she always has low D and she suffers from stomach upset when she takes it. I told her it is a fat soluble vitamin and if she increases her fat intake to a normal level, she could likely lower the dose of D and get better results. Remember, she is the guru...so it's a no go.
In any case, never follow a fad diet, eat fairly healthy most of the time and practice portion control. Falling off the wagon and eating 20 cookies on occassion is not going to hurt your general health. And stay away from all preservatives, flavor enhansers and fake sweetners (only use natural cane sugar, real maple syrup or even corn syrup, contrary to popular belief). Those chemicals will kill you before anything else will.
Although this comment was a little wordy, you hit it on the spot. I have changed my eating habbits and since May I have lost 35 pounds and even though (when it is around that time of the month) occassionally I eat 3 chocolate bars in one sitting, because I am only doing it once a month, I still see weight loss results.
In simple, be a concious eater and never beat yourself up when you cheat!!!!!
For me, I don't care about sugar or corn syrup. People make such a huge deal about it and it generally makes up very little of your actual caloric intake.
I'm with you! I have a few drops of (gasp) REAL cream and a spoonful of REAL sugar in my morning cup of coffee. Sometimes TWO cups on Sunday. I also choose butter over margarine on the rare occasion I use it. I think all the "fake" foods are much worse than the real thing -- eaten in moderation of course.
On a daily basis -- I agree with the lean meats, fruits and veggies, and of course, a cookie! I avoid the stuff with corn syrup more to avoid unnecessary sugars than the source. For example, we make our own salad dressings. Much healthier.
Low vitamin D can also be solved, in part, by going outside and exposing unsunblocked skin to the sun for a few minutes each day. It works, I have to do it all of the time, especially in the winter.
Also, cut any carbonated soda and alcohol from the diet and in a couple of weeks the overall body bloating caused by ingesting these substances will subside and you will look thinner. Yeah, that happened to me, too. I've found the city drinking water has become much more palatable now that I filter it. I think the main reason more people don't primarily drink tap water is because of the taste.
As for super skinny celebrities, what is the point? If most of them put on a few pounds, they would still look thin on camera. However, I can assure everyone, I didn't get any of my eating disorders from watching celebrities. I got them from watching my mom.
I agree. I think sometimes these fad diets are just as hard on the people who have to live with the dieters, especially if they insist everyone in the house jumps on the wagon with them.
To the author of this article: Celebrities are great role models?? Who are you trying to kid? Don't give these idiots who follow celebrities like they're gods any more reason to blindly follow them. The celebrities discussed in this article are narcissistic creatures who have been paid to Tweet this garbage about their so-called new diet. This is dangerous stuff and you glamorize it by writing an article like this. You too seem to have fallen at their feet.
I agree with you that Celebrities aren't all that great as role models; however, I disagree that the author of the article is glamorizing them.
Instead, I think the author is calling attention to the reasons why people shouldn't copy celebrities blindly, even when they are posting about their fabulous "results" on blogs or twitter.
I thought it was an interesting and honest article intended to make people put some thought into their diet, instead of just looking for a quick fix from a celebrity.
Not all celebrities are as described in the comments above. Some are generous good people who happen to have a great talent. By going to their movies and buying their products, we give them the money they have. Not all celebrites are Lindseys or Brittneys. Just because these people do these wierd diets does not mean every one should. It is unhealthy to be over weight...it causes so many problems, but with a reasonable diet and at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, a person can loose weight and keep it off. I am by no means skinny minny but I do exercise and try to eat right most of the time.
Thanks for this article! It's not that there's anything new that I didn't already know, but I know so many people -- smart people -- who go from this diet to that diet, and still can't figure out why they keep putting on more weight. When I tell them that there's no simple "diet" solution to weight loss, and that the only way to be successful is to do the hard work involved in making healthy food choices, they're not interested in hearing that. American culture is so geared toward immediate gratification now that people have a hard time taking responsibility. If they lose weight on some crazy diet and then gain it all back, it's the diet's fault. And when we let crazy people who claim to be so-called "experts" tell us that these crazy diets actually work -- and the media gives them a platform to spew their crazy theories -- we all lose.
"I feel pure and happy and much lighter (I dropped the extra pounds that I had gained during a majorly fun and delicious 'relax and enjoy' life phase about a month ago)…"
That's hilarious! Since when has Gwyneth had "extra pounds"? She has always looked emaciated and frail to me, which is sad, as I am sure that a few extra pounds might help her fill out in the right places and make her appear more attractive.
One of the first patients I cared for as RN was a 30-40 year old woman who just wanted to lose five more pounds before she and her husband went on a cruise. Instead, she spent three days on the telemetry unit with a life-threatening heart arrhythmia she caused by trying some detox cleansing diet. Let see .... lose 5 pounds and die trying .... I don't think so. People don't realize there is a delicate balance of chemicals, minerals, and nutrients in our bodies. Upset that balance and you can have major health issues for the rest of your (now shortened) life. I've come to have no sympathy for stupidity.
Celebs make their living off of looking good, so yeah they'd probably know how to starve themselves to lose weight. But I'm just sick to death of these "cleanse" diets; they've been used by wrestlers for years and are just laxatives under a different name. Further, they are quite DANGEROUS! Why isn't the FDA investigating these so-called "cleanse" diets?
As an ex-angelino, I can tell you these people are freaks. if you saw them on the street with an objective eye they would shock the h*ll out of you. You can see every little thing they've had done to their face, their thighs, their lips, their everything and many of them are so zoned out on prescription drugs they have no idea what's going on around them. Additionally some are so waif thin you are afraid if you touch them you'll damage them. It's like some sort of horror show.
Don't aspire to be them. They have nothing but the way they look, even the very talented ones. To be an actor is to have something essential missing in your make-up--or at least and American actor. No one normal could live the way they do.
The slapfighting here quickly got unproductive, and there's no reason to order more episodes since you two seem incapable of treating each other with respect.
Utterly ridiculous! This is just another form of eating disorder. When will we learn that as long as we put a good variety of healthy foods into our bodies, it doesn't matter if our weight fluctuates a little from time to time. Use some common sense, people!
"Celebrities are great role models but they're not acting the part when it comes to healthy eating behaviors," said registered dietitian Keri Gans, a New York spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association."
Celebrities are great role models?? Since when? I am struggling to think of even one that was/is a good role model. Even the likes of Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie, who do contribute some of their millions to help others, are not good role models - she slept with a married man and he cheated on his wife. Not the type of role model I look to.....
"Celebrities are great role models but they're not acting the part when it comes to healthy eating behaviors," said registered dietitian Keri Gans, a New York spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association.
OMG I can't think of a more generally dysfunctional group of people. Don't ever portray actors as role models.
JOE, i hear ya, why do people idolize other people just because they see them on t.v? people do not know who these people really are on the inside, because they are ACTORS! my role model was an elder in my family whom i actually saw every day, respected what he stood for, someone who respected and supported me and guided me while i was growing up. That person was there when i needed them, needed to talk about anything. The whole idea of these so called celebrities being role models is a joke, people should not idolize/look up or see these people as role models. find a real person.
"Celebrities are great role models but they're not acting the part when it comes to healthy eatingbehaviors," said registered dietitian Keri Gans, a New York spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association.
I'd have to whole heartedly disagree with Keri Gans' statement that celebs are great role models. I could probably count on one hand the celebs that might be decent role models. One major problem in the US is that people do make role models of these people and sports pros, who also make pretty bad role models. When this country's kids are mostly picking role models like Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, Dian Fossey, Jane Goodall, Carl Sagan, Aristotle, Isaac Newton, George Washington Carver, etc., we will realize that the American parenting and education system is on the mend. There are thousands of excellent role models, past and present. These men and women made a real difference in the world and opened up people's eyes to new , powerful and interesting things that we have all benefited from in some way. Celebs and sports stars are just there for entertainment. Leave it at that. And never do a diet that a star is on as you may just end up in the hospital. They aren't the brightest people on the planet. You've seen dumb people with a lot of cash...they are 9 times out of 10 either a star or a pro sports player. There are plenty of people out there that come up with ways to take their money from them and fad dieting is one big one.
Albert Einstein was a serial cheater, Aristotle was a pedophile and Ike Newton was an anti social. That's another thing; brains=/=morals. They were very bright, but had very deviant behaviors; not too different from today's celebrities.
Yes, celebrities are GREAT role models - I hold them up to my children and say, see what abusing drugs and alcohol gets you? I didn't say they were positive role models.
Do the people who write these articles actually go back and read them before they post?? Idiots.
I remember seeing a photo of Teri Hatcher walking down a street once, and I thought she looked like a skeleton with skin. She used to have such a lovely body! Very feminine!
Funny I was thinking along the same lines. I'm thinking she looks like one of those bobble-head dolls. She's a beautiful woman when she's at a decent weight. Right now she's far to skinny and just doesn't look healthy.

Arg, it put my post under the wrong thread. I meant to comment on Jeffor's post.

That is sooooo funny!!
cracked me up too (as I'm snacking on potato chips)
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL etc., sounds just like our wonderful U.S.Congress...
I'm making up some mop water, going to mop the floors and basement, then drink it all down in a beer glass.
One of the best posts I've read. That's damn funny! Sadly, probably a few hundred thousand would try by Monday morning.
I suppose it all depends upon what's in the mop water....

very true...
Celebrities are terrible role models. More so than ever. Vapid, insecure, materialistic, misinformed, amoral, and narrow minded.
I'll eat when I'm hungry, drink when I'm thirsty, and feel good about it.
Love it! Great post.
Amen!
You are so right. Unfortunately, many young girls try to emulate them and the parents seem to encourage them.

I hope my boys see their father and grandfather and hear the stories of their great grandfathers as examples of how to be men.
Crash diets -- it's in the name CRASH. Hello!?!
@ taxbite
That's really useful advice...best I've seen.
I take vinegar shots as well and it's great.
Of course, mine's malt vinegar
And it's served over french fries, but it's still the same thing, right? :D :D
I like mine with Vodka, with a spritz of lime...LOL!
I prefer mine BEFORE it turns to vinegar!
there you go.
Lol. That's funny!
Maybe with all of the detoxing thats why Kutcher might want to leave.... life must be a up and down roller coaster ride!
Maybe they make too much cash and it has made them stup...err...morally and mentally challenged?
Or there isn't enough bathrooms in there house to support all the detoxing!!!!
Maybe Ashton wants to leave Demi because he is tired of listen to a bag of bones talk about yet another fad diet to lose what, skin......
I agree. I think sometimes these fad diets are just as hard on the people who have to live with the dieters, especially if they insist everyone in the house jumps on the wagon with them.
Why you shouldn't detox like Demi?...
Because it's vapid, vacuous and you have better things to do with your mind and body than obsess about this crap.
Miss Bessy,
I agree with you that Celebrities aren't all that great as role models; however, I disagree that the author of the article is glamorizing them.
Basically they spend a couple of hours a day sitting on the can
They lose a lot when they do these cleanse things, because they are so full of sh** !
Love this one!
Ok...is anyone else have a problem with the picture of Demi in their head that H25 and MM have presented????
Not all celebrities are as described in the comments above. Some are generous good people who happen to have a great talent. By going to their movies and buying their products, we give them the money they have. Not all celebrites are Lindseys or Brittneys. Just because these people do these wierd diets does not mean every one should. It is unhealthy to be over weight...it causes so many problems, but with a reasonable diet and at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, a person can loose weight and keep it off. I am by no means skinny minny but I do exercise and try to eat right most of the time.
It's also unhealthy to be underweight and judging by that photo of Demi Moore I'd guess she is extremely underweight.
100% agree!
Ditto!
celebrities as role models- for who? Morons?
I wouldn't want to look like that stick Gwyneth for all the money in the world- And Demi- she looks so harsh now.
Neither one is admirable in any way-
Gwyneth has a great ass when she's her normal size. Don't know why she's want to mess with that.
That's hilarious! Since when has Gwyneth had "extra pounds"? She has always looked emaciated and frail to me, which is sad, as I am sure that a few extra pounds might help her fill out in the right places and make her appear more attractive.
I think a lot of people, famous or not, are more concerned about weight than health. I think many have mistaken one as a sure sign of the other.
But I agree with you that a healthy person will look better than a too-skinny person. Who wants to hug a boney guy or girl anyway?
These people are freaking morons. What has Demi Moore done recently that anyone should care what she thinks/eats/purges?
Celebrities are the worst role models there can be because they don't live in the real world and they have an overblown sense of entitlement.
JustACrier likes to call a lot of people "morons". That word comes up in almost every post I have read by JustACrier.
In JustACrier's case, the old saying "It takes one to know one!" is so true.
Perhaps JustACrier should take a good long look in the mirror to see what a real moron looks like.
Oh, and by the way JustACrier, can you explain the differences between the words logic and logistics?
Excuse me, everyone, I have a stalker. Hi Bruce!
Just answer the question JustACrier. Logistics v. Logic. How do you explain using the word logistics in your stupid comment?
Oh, and the other question too...
Are you a woman?
Bruce-1628250 and JustAFlier, ignore each other and don't address or mention each other again.
You're each suspended for a day for violating #1 of the Code of Honor.
Good post, Beverly.
Idiots.
Mary Jen...I love this post!
First of all, just because you're thin does not mean you're healthy. They have lost pretty much all their muscle tissue. That's not healthy.
Second of all, their "dieting" can be reduced to one word: liposuction.
I remember seeing a photo of Teri Hatcher walking down a street once, and I thought she looked like a skeleton with skin. She used to have such a lovely body! Very feminine!
just yesterday I saw a photo of Demi Moore and kept thinking "she's so skinny her head looks too big for her body" not a good look for anyone.
Funny I was thinking along the same lines. I'm thinking she looks like one of those bobble-head dolls. She's a beautiful woman when she's at a decent weight. Right now she's far to skinny and just doesn't look healthy.
I'd guess that losing weight is her response to Ashton's cheating. She figures it's because she is fat...it can't be her, it must be that she is fat.
