they didn't say they didn't study use of sex toys, just that it wasn't studied in combination with sexual acts at last intercourse. there are more than only 9 articles (released today) coming from the data from this survey. check out sexualhealth.indiana.edu for a list of the research publications that are in press but not yet released and then keep on the look out for those.
It isn't "inadequate" at all. All most sex toys do is simulate something that we can pretty much do oursleves. And sure, there are SOME sex toys that can do things we can't really do. Namely, I don't know any man who can make his penis vibrate. But this doesn't make the research inadequate, simply incomplete. I'm sure the only reason toys and pornography weren't included was because this was funded by a condom manufacturing company. Toys and porn wouldn't have affected what they needed to know to better sell their product. That's why we do need funding for this type of study that isn't biased, whether it be through government funds or not.

Brian, don't be so obvious about your liberal bias. Not everyone who would object to spending taxpayer money on research like this is a prude clinging hoplessely to missionary sex. Perhaps some of us realize that when the federal government is borrowing 35 cents of every dollar is spends, perhaps the government might priortize how the money is being spent. Frankly, as fascinating as this subject is, I would rather we spend our money on defending ourselves and for essential government services. I know it is painful to have to turn to corporate money...oh heavens the evil corporations can never fun objective research, unlike government funding which always results in impartial, objective research. To that I have only one thing to say - the now widely discredited "facts" about global warming were all funding by the government. Hmmmm

TO Rev C. To answer your question, society has to deal with STDs and unwanted pregnancies. We have to get the facts so we can get a solution. Ignorance does not solve anything.

I am also sure they didn't do all this research just for your reading pleasures. As a public health professional who works in STD/HIV programs, it is important to know where people are at with their sexual behaviors. We need to understand what sexual risks people are taking so we can aim our strategies to further protect and educate people, no matter what their age. Times are changing and sex is not near as taboo as it once was, people are experimenting more and more, therefore we as social scientists need to be up to speed with the population.
Who really cares? I'll tell you who really cares. The millions of people who are contracting diseases because of the new "standard" sexual practices emerging in America! Luckily this study shows an increase in condom use among teens and other groups that have had the most problems with STD's, but still not nearly enough people use condoms, and MOST people still don't realize the dangers that non-vaginal sex can present! And this problem is only going to get worse if we don't study it, because people ain't ever gonna stop screwing! How about you get your head out of your okole and try seeing the bigger picture here? Or do you want our youngsters to get cancer because they're oblivious to the fact that there are things OTHER THEN AIDS that can be transmitted through various sex acts?
Rev C., The study was done to bring the public's attention to the bedroom. You would be terrified how many times I hear grown women say things like "I don't use condoms because they only protect against pregnancy and I'm on the pill for that", "Only men can get AIDS", or "I've never had an orgasm because I'm too embarrassed to ask my partner to do ____". The more educated people are on these topics, the less naive and shamed they are on these subjects. Ignorance may be bliss... but only right up to the point that it becomes dangerous.

How did the study define "anal sex"? The article sorts of implies that it means anal intercourse, but it could also mean oral-anal, or digital-anal stimulation.

Anyone who posted or will post a comment on Brian's commentary MUST understand that the veiw of sex in America is still Puritainical in nature. Our society dictates that any discussion on sex or research on sex is to be viewed from the downward looking angle. Its wrong. We should all be repentent and cry for forgiveness.You wonder why the commentator is liberal in this ONE snapshot of a study, because any where a person travels in this free country, sex is still taboo. This study, well funded by a corporation for the use of information in sales but also the society as a whole, is just a sliver of an indication of what people are doing. Also, those people interviewed, questioned tended to be more liberal on their sexual behavior. There is nothing wrong with that.
If people want to live a life of secluded embarassment about sex, stand up in public and condem it, find something else to do. We are animals. Animals who enjoy mating. How does anyone think the world became populated by the human race? People couldnt stop having sex.

Just because you don't agree with people does not give you the right to call them names - but name calling does point out the emptiness of your arguments. Have never commented at this site before, and probably will not again, because like MSNBC itself there seems to be very little room for any disagreement with the conclusions of the "elite". I think some people are missing an important point of the study and the article.. Ok.. So what if we American's are getting kinky? Big deal. What is important is the points about diseases, different cancers, and such. People are going to do what they want sexually, but they need to be aware of how it can affect their health and the health of their partners. I believe that's a valid point that many commenting and/or reading this article are missing. Everything we do runs a risk, and I, for one, would like to know what the risks are before hand. How about you?

Perhaps that's the problem with the growth of sexually transmitted diseases, there are too many Christians who like you don't want to know and don't want to alert the teens to the dangers of illicit sexual acts. I think that could be a good reason why teen pregnancy has grown the past few years, (abstinence education wasn't working too good perhaps). I don't have a teen-age son or daughter but if I did I'd make sure they were aware of the dangers of oral sex, as well as regular vaginal sex, and oh yes how to prevent sexual diseases and accidental pregnancy. The girls can't get pregnant on their own, it takes two (male and female).

I wish he wouldn't try to sell the HPV vaccine at the end. I know two girls that have been crippled by it and another that is very ill. I came to learn that there are no legitimate tests showing it prevents anything or that it's safe. They reference fraudulent tests that don't even use a control group (and you all should remember science from high school at least... you need a control group!) Anyway it's awful what these companies do and I wish journalists would do a little research before throwing more people in harms way.
