they didn't say they didn't study use of sex toys, just that it wasn't studied in combination with sexual acts at last intercourse. there are more than only 9 articles (released today) coming from the data from this survey. check out sexualhealth.indiana.edu for a list of the research publications that are in press but not yet released and then keep on the look out for those.
It isn't "inadequate" at all. All most sex toys do is simulate something that we can pretty much do oursleves. And sure, there are SOME sex toys that can do things we can't really do. Namely, I don't know any man who can make his penis vibrate. But this doesn't make the research inadequate, simply incomplete. I'm sure the only reason toys and pornography weren't included was because this was funded by a condom manufacturing company. Toys and porn wouldn't have affected what they needed to know to better sell their product. That's why we do need funding for this type of study that isn't biased, whether it be through government funds or not.
Seems sex these days is getting nastier and nastier.... Everyone wants to play in p00p and lick their crotches. We've definitely descended from apes & monkeys. LOL
Brian, don't be so obvious about your liberal bias. Not everyone who would object to spending taxpayer money on research like this is a prude clinging hoplessely to missionary sex. Perhaps some of us realize that when the federal government is borrowing 35 cents of every dollar is spends, perhaps the government might priortize how the money is being spent. Frankly, as fascinating as this subject is, I would rather we spend our money on defending ourselves and for essential government services. I know it is painful to have to turn to corporate money...oh heavens the evil corporations can never fun objective research, unlike government funding which always results in impartial, objective research. To that I have only one thing to say - the now widely discredited "facts" about global warming were all funding by the government. Hmmmm
Hi there, I'm Brian's editor at msnbc.com. Just to clear up any confusion, I wanted to point out that Brian's piece is a commentary so, as such, we asked him to share his opinion.
I just get a kick out of this article and the more I read it, the more I laugh....So let's go spend taxpayer dollars to pay for these groups to interview minors on their sexual preferences...
here's the thing about govt spending - I dont get a say as to whether we throw away billions on fake pointless wars that have NOTHING to do with DEFENDING our nation. nor do I get a say on the trillions that our govt wastes in the form of tax loopholes for giant corporations and subsidies to industries that dont need subsidies (*cough, the corn industry)
Yet, somehow the idea of funding small studies like this to better grasp why theres a rise in HPV cancers...is not warranted, why? Because we are already wasting our money on things even more stupid? oh...yeah, I guess that makes a TON of sense. to someone, just not me.
Defending our country from what? We have created our own hatred. Christen arrogance or let me put it better a country the believes in the Hamburger universe where heaven is above and hell is below and we are stuck in the middle.
Glenn Beck a man who wheres underway that supposedly protect him from Death by fire, drowning, bullets has a listening audience shocks me.
Sex is natural and one of the greatest gifts given in this body. Enjoy the GOD moments from it for I'm sure we all said OH MY GOD in moments of climax...
Of course this story has liberal bias. It takes a political shot at Christine ODonnell near the top of the article. Why does everything have to turn to politics? I think the story is good / interesting enough without bringing politics into it.
If you dont want people poking fun at your beliefs about masturbation, best not to make any public comments on it. Christine O'Donnell could benefit from Shutting the F up.
You are so right Jessica. Hopefully our children are learning from her ignorance that the youthful opinions voiced in public forum will come back to bite you one day. Do you think she still holds the same views of masturbation now that she's all grown up?
Oh, but there's where you are wrong, Rev. C.... Glenn does care about these kinds of things. Now don't go getting all puritanical on us. By the way, sex is a sport, and if you don't think a lot of sports isn't about sex -- how do you explain the Dallas Cowgirls etc. etc. etc.... ever watch commercials around athletic events?
The radical christian right will be in an uproar, but when you think they'd rather deny people health care and kill people in war, why would you be surprised that they would want to deny everyone the God given sexual pleasures.
to brian and the rest of you...some things are better left in the bedroom. do i really care what everybody else is doing? of course not. we don't need to waste taxpayer money on frivilous research such as this. and have a little decency and modesty. bottom line is....who really cares?
TO Rev C. To answer your question, society has to deal with STDs and unwanted pregnancies. We have to get the facts so we can get a solution. Ignorance does not solve anything.
I am also sure they didn't do all this research just for your reading pleasures. As a public health professional who works in STD/HIV programs, it is important to know where people are at with their sexual behaviors. We need to understand what sexual risks people are taking so we can aim our strategies to further protect and educate people, no matter what their age. Times are changing and sex is not near as taboo as it once was, people are experimenting more and more, therefore we as social scientists need to be up to speed with the population.
Who really cares? I'll tell you who really cares. The millions of people who are contracting diseases because of the new "standard" sexual practices emerging in America! Luckily this study shows an increase in condom use among teens and other groups that have had the most problems with STD's, but still not nearly enough people use condoms, and MOST people still don't realize the dangers that non-vaginal sex can present! And this problem is only going to get worse if we don't study it, because people ain't ever gonna stop screwing! How about you get your head out of your okole and try seeing the bigger picture here? Or do you want our youngsters to get cancer because they're oblivious to the fact that there are things OTHER THEN AIDS that can be transmitted through various sex acts?
Rev C., The study was done to bring the public's attention to the bedroom. You would be terrified how many times I hear grown women say things like "I don't use condoms because they only protect against pregnancy and I'm on the pill for that", "Only men can get AIDS", or "I've never had an orgasm because I'm too embarrassed to ask my partner to do ____". The more educated people are on these topics, the less naive and shamed they are on these subjects. Ignorance may be bliss... but only right up to the point that it becomes dangerous.
Rev C? .. Do you support ignorance in all "Private" matters?
Is sex just dirty to you?
I suppose if you can "keep it in the bedroom" your own inadequacies won't be exposed, and your partner will just stay " Ignorant!"
Because of the sexual morays of this country most adults .. men and women .. fail miserably at sexual endeavors with their partners .. resulting in infidelity and destruction of marriage, and families. All because of of teaching about immorality and sin .. bypassing the fact that Sex is as natural as day & night!
The idea that a God would create all animal, humans thankfully included, with the facility to enjoy sexual pleasure as the most intense, stimulating, act we have in our entire life, says it all!
If God had intended for us to not have sex .. God would have constructed us physically & psychologically different ... and not made the sexual act the most gratifying act a human can experience.
Unfortunately, among humans there are those that just don't get it.. because that can't experience the pleasure that God granted the rest of us .. for lack of a better term lets just call them "Numbnuts" .. Numbnuts can't understand the pleasure of sex others feel .. So they rail against sex ... Sorta like a blind man telling a visitor to a building what it looks like ... Not often a very good perspective to rely on.
Americans need sex education .. in all age groups .. because they have been misled by the sexually ignorant for to many years. Open communication between partners is essential for any relationship.
I have meet woman in their fifties who have never had a orgasm with their husband .. and thought that was natural .. the horror stories of relationships failures due to this single cause is astonishing!
Religious leaders & moralist have done more damage than they have done good in this area ..
I hope this study will make people think ...
A good sexual life .. is the backbone of all committed relationships .. whatever you want to call it.
sorry this post went the wrong place the first time .. double post
How did the study define "anal sex"? The article sorts of implies that it means anal intercourse, but it could also mean oral-anal, or digital-anal stimulation.
Anyone who posted or will post a comment on Brian's commentary MUST understand that the veiw of sex in America is still Puritainical in nature. Our society dictates that any discussion on sex or research on sex is to be viewed from the downward looking angle. Its wrong. We should all be repentent and cry for forgiveness. You wonder why the commentator is liberal in this ONE snapshot of a study, because any where a person travels in this free country, sex is still taboo. This study, well funded by a corporation for the use of information in sales but also the society as a whole, is just a sliver of an indication of what people are doing. Also, those people interviewed, questioned tended to be more liberal on their sexual behavior. There is nothing wrong with that.
If people want to live a life of secluded embarassment about sex, stand up in public and condem it, find something else to do. We are animals. Animals who enjoy mating. How does anyone think the world became populated by the human race? People couldnt stop having sex.
Embrace this study and enjoy the openeness that is the current standard for some Americans.
There are a lot of very paranoid people on this site. Cranking up the vast right wing (dare I say "christian") conspiracy again. Folks there is a legitimate argument on both sides of any discussion. Just because you don't agree with people does not give you the right to call them names - but name calling does point out the emptiness of your arguments. Have never commented at this site before, and probably will not again, because like MSNBC itself there seems to be very little room for any disagreement with the conclusions of the "elite". Perhaps this is exactly why the Democrats are about the suffer a huge setback...
"With great please comes great responsibility." I'm so glad that this article made that point. The importance of getting tested and practicing safe sex can't be stressed enough!
I actually got tested through a really great website online (www.getstdtested.com) and I highly recommend it. It was confidential, convenient, and most importantly, I know my status. Get tested!
I think some people are missing an important point of the study and the article.. Ok.. So what if we American's are getting kinky? Big deal. What is important is the points about diseases, different cancers, and such. People are going to do what they want sexually, but they need to be aware of how it can affect their health and the health of their partners. I believe that's a valid point that many commenting and/or reading this article are missing. Everything we do runs a risk, and I, for one, would like to know what the risks are before hand. How about you?
Perhaps that's the problem with the growth of sexually transmitted diseases, there are too many Christians who like you don't want to know and don't want to alert the teens to the dangers of illicit sexual acts. I think that could be a good reason why teen pregnancy has grown the past few years, (abstinence education wasn't working too good perhaps). I don't have a teen-age son or daughter but if I did I'd make sure they were aware of the dangers of oral sex, as well as regular vaginal sex, and oh yes how to prevent sexual diseases and accidental pregnancy. The girls can't get pregnant on their own, it takes two (male and female).
Kudos Brian Alexander for suckering MSNB to use their platform to sell your new book...But I already have my copy, The Joy of ___." (__— is still a private matter and a bad word...but we still do it).
Suckering? What's wrong with Brian drawing on his book research to write interesting and relevant articles for MSNBC? I can only think that you dislike something he wrote and so are looking for any way to attack him. Typical unreasonably Net behavior, sadly.
To those celibate people who do not care what other's do in the bedroom, this article was of great interest to me. Now I can tell whatever woman I'm with that anal sex has doubled amoung women!! Get with the program!!!
I wish he wouldn't try to sell the HPV vaccine at the end. I know two girls that have been crippled by it and another that is very ill. I came to learn that there are no legitimate tests showing it prevents anything or that it's safe. They reference fraudulent tests that don't even use a control group (and you all should remember science from high school at least... you need a control group!) Anyway it's awful what these companies do and I wish journalists would do a little research before throwing more people in harms way.
Really? You learned the tests used no control group? Rather doubt that. Here's a story on a very large study on a HPV vaccine that showed a very high success rate (and mentions a control group):
She is running for office in Delaware.... Her relevance to the article was in her anti-masturbation stance... She is the author of these fine gems of stupidity speaking on the record....
"American scientific companies are cross-breeding humans and animals and coming up with mice with fully functioning human brains."
"I dabbled into witchcraft. I never joined a coven." / "One of my first dates with a witch was on a satanic altar."
"It is not enough to be abstinent with other people, you also have to be be abstinent alone. The Bible says that lust in your heart is committing adultery, so you can't masturbate without lust."
(in response to a reporter asking if she'd send out bikini photos to gain votes.) "A candidate said several years ago, 'I'm not concerned the reason you vote for me as long as you vote for me.'"
"You know what, evolution is a myth." / "Why aren't monkeys still evolving into humans?"
And, after hearing those nuggets of brilliance... the most ironic comment she could, AND DID make was this one...
"During the primary, I heard the audible voice of God. He said, 'Credibility.'" -
Republican Senate nominee Christine O'Donnell of Delaware said in a 2006 debate that China was plotting to take over America and claimed to have classified information about the country that she couldn't divulge.
She said China had a "carefully thought out and strategic plan to take over America" and accused one opponent of appeasement for suggesting that the two countries were economically dependent and should find a way to be allies.
"That doesn't work," she said. "There's much I want to say. I wish I wasn't privy to some of the classified information that I am privy to."
"A country that forces women to have abortions and mandates that you can only have one child and will not allow you the freedom to read the Bible, you think they can be our friend?" she asked. "We have to look at our history and realize that if they pretend to be our friend it's because they've got something up their sleeve."
At the debate, opponent Jan Ting countered that China has the potential to become a more Democratic country and an important ally.
When Ting challenged O'Donnell's claim about having secret information, O'Donnell didn't answer specifically but suggested she had received it through nonprofit groups she worked with that frequently sent missionaries there.

"But, as the researchers later wrote, even a heavily edited survey “that focused more narrowly on disease pathways was never given approval throughout the four years of the [George H.W.] Bush administration.” In fact, despite widespread worry over AIDS, a skittish Congress passed a law expressly forbidding funding the study."
Just proof that we are too stupid as a nation to rule ourselves....
Only 89% of men have performed oral sex? Somewhere 11% of women are very disappointed!
Actually there's way more disappointed by men who don't know what they're doing.
A study of sexuality without considering sex toys or pornography is inadequate.
Sex toys are a must!!!!!!

Sex always involves politics and politics always gets around to sex. I can't wait to here how the idiot Glenn Beck handles this.
