"When they think about dying in this way, they may have some degree of magical thinking, knowing that it is very likely their death will get publicity and media attention," said Dr. Alan L. Berman, executive director of the Washington-based American Association of Suicidology."
How is this magical thinking? It works. It's public and it does get media attention the majority of the time.
"Many people are under the impression that if you just put up a barrier they will find another way to kill themselves. It's an argument that people will make against putting up a barrier," Draper says. "And it's myth."
Really? So, the deterrant of a public suicide prevents those people from committing suicide in private? Where's the data to back up your claim? There isn't any, is there?
I honestly think those individuals will still go and do it but, hey!, the public doesn't have to hear about it! This is like NIMBY to an extreme.
I hope that anyone thinks of doing something like this, they can get help and work through it.
People who want to kill themselves will find a way to do it no matter what safe guards you put in place. Just because you can't jump of the GW Bridge anymore doesn't mean their aren't a million other places you can still achieve the feat.
I just love how the so called experts know how to stop people who want to commit suicide. Just another example of people with big degrees that don't know squat. All of the experts on suicide are dead.
golden gate bridge 746ft? the usual idiot news-ape using wikipedia, which indeed gives the number 746ft. the poor reporting notwithstanding, i'm glad mr. hines survived his jump, god speed, mr. hines.
If ever someone who is contemplating suicide were to read this just remember if you do it you die with your peoblems and thats how your remembered. Time heals all wounds if you live you can solve what can be solved and the rest will fade into the past. Choose life!
I couldn't agree more. I've lived through two suicides and short of locking them up like prisoners, you are not going to stop it. I've given much more thought to this than most. If you are going to stop a suicide and cannot change their minds, it will mean imprisonment. How often can you change anyone's mind?
I do believe that these are usually people that need to be heard, but we have no listeners in our society. If you want to stop suicides (and many other problems), listen. Hear people. You don't have to agree, just hear them out.

They're planning to put up diving boards as part of the stimulus and new age population control in the rotten apple!

I don't want my tax money to be spent on stopping people from doing what they want to do!
The busy-bodies want to control the world, with your money!
