"When they think about dying in this way, they may have some degree of magical thinking, knowing that it is very likely their death will get publicity and media attention," said Dr. Alan L. Berman, executive director of the Washington-based American Association of Suicidology."

How is this magical thinking? It works. It's public and it does get media attention the majority of the time.

"Many people are under the impression that if you just put up a barrier they will find another way to kill themselves. It's an argument that people will make against putting up a barrier," Draper says. "And it's myth."

Really? So, the deterrant of a public suicide prevents those people from committing suicide in private? Where's the data to back up your claim? There isn't any, is there?

I honestly think those individuals will still go and do it but, hey!, the public doesn't have to hear about it! This is like NIMBY to an extreme.

I hope that anyone thinks of doing something like this, they can get help and work through it.

People who want to kill themselves will find a way to do it no matter what safe guards you put in place. Just because you can't jump of the GW Bridge anymore doesn't mean their aren't a million other places you can still achieve the feat.
