Just like in Las Vegas you need to be careful of the all you can eat salad bars where the workers handle the uncooked food with their hands. You never know what the kitchen looks like and if the workers wash their hands after leaving the bathroom. The drug Cipro is the best remedy for the bacteria that take up residence at the base of the small hairs located in the entry way of your small intestine. The bacteria is almost impossible to detect and the majority of doctors do not want to give you Cipro to get rid of the problem so you suffer. As you might tell I am a survivor of this difficult infection.
I've worked in health care for 30+ years. It used to be when a patient had MRSA we were required to glove and gown and wash before and after any contact. This included delivering meals. About 1997 the company i worked for actively encouraged staff at all levels to stop because gloves and gowns upset the patients and their family. They felt stigmatized. MRSA became something to worry about especially taking it home. We were told healthy people couldn't get it.
Now it is everywhere---I believe that had precautions not been stopped in the name of PC and if we stopped overusing sulfa and other antibiotics in animals and if we eased up on the sanitizers we'd be much better off. Bacteria builds up resistance to all of these substances and our immune systems decrease in effectiveness if we overuse sanitizers.
We always rub down thoroughly any cuts with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide immediately after going fishing or swimming.
In the summer, the Bays down here are real warm (90 degrees water temp.). I have known 3 different people who got this when they went fishing. All had open cuts.
It's got to be in the water, how else would it get on your feet or legs? (We wade fish down here alot, the Bays are many square miles in area but most is only a few feet deep.)
I had this infection after a stay in the hospital for intestional surgery. It was a nastybug for sure.
The cream you need you can get from the doctor and it is called BACTOBAN. Works wonders gets rid of them almost as soon as you apply it AND if you put it on as soon as the first red mark comes the boils do not even form!
Thanx for the common sense words lexiwords-1. I had this infection in the fleshy area just inside the eye socket, and on my skin and it was very painful! Do NOT believe that just because you practice good hygiene, you will not get this infection. People who are immuno-suppressed for whatever reason (in my case it was longterm Prednisone use) can easily be overwhelmed by this bacteria. Bactroban did work wonders with the skin lesions.
Unfortunately I require the use of the Prednisone for a chronic disease, so I have to be on the watch for this infection from now on.
As for the fishermen who got it, it is possible that their immune systems were low due to overwork and extreme stress. Even normally healthy people can have this happen.
My mother is a carrier of MRSA. She was recently hospitalized with "MRSA precautions" meaning all visitors had to dress down in surgicals, wear gloves and of course wash thoroughly with antibiotic soaps. Interestingly, if my Mom was allowed to walk, she had to dress down, etc. as we, her visitors, had to. HOWEVER, we (her visitors) were allowed to walk with her, BUT we could not wear the surgicals, gloves etc. Doesn't make much sense! To make it worse, some staff told us "don't worry about the precautions" and we visited with no protection - easily we could have carried the MRSA bug out into the world. It is no wonder MRSA is becoming so prevalent...if this is the policies of one hospital - who knows what other hospitals are doing in this State, this Country or how about the many other countries whose citizens visit the U.S.A.? The fight against the pathogenic microbes begins with consistent safe practices to protect each and every person, we are far from there.
This is totally gross. I hate MRSA and I propose that Congress do something about it right now, because it offends me and makes me feel scared......oh and also oppressed.
A ruptured MRSA abscess S.aureus most commonly colonizes the anterior nares (the nostrils), although the respiratory tract, opened wounds, intravenous catheters, and urinary tract are also potential sites for infection. Healthy individuals may carry MRSA asymptomatically for periods ranging from a few weeks to many years. Patients with compromised immune systems are at a significantly greater risk of symptomatic secondary infection.
MRSA can be detected by swabbing the nostrils of patients and isolating the bacteria found inside. Combined with extra sanitary measures for those in contact with infected patients, screening patients admitted to hospitals has been found to be effective in minimizing the spread of MRSA in hospitals in the United States, Denmark, Finland, and the Netherlands.
MRSA may progress substantially within 24–48 hours of initial topical symptoms. After 72 hours, MRSA can take hold in human tissues and eventually become resistant to treatment. The initial presentation of MRSA is small red bumps that resemble pimples, spider bites, or boils that may be accompanied by fever and occasionally rashes. Within a few days the bumps become larger, more painful, and eventually open into deep, pus-filled boils. About 75 percent of community-associated (CA-) MRSA infections are localized to skin and soft tissue and usually can be treated effectively. However, some CA-MRSA strains display enhanced virulence, spreading more rapidly and causing illness much more severe than traditional healthcare-associated (HA-) MRSA infections, and they can affect vital organs and lead to widespread infection (sepsis), toxic shock syndrome and necrotizing ("flesh-eating") pneumonia. This is thought to be due to toxins carried by CA-MRSA strains, such as PVL and PSM, though PVL was recently found to not be a factor in a study by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the NIH. It is not known why some healthy people develop CA-MRSA skin infections that are treatable whereas others infected with the same strain develop severe infections or die.
The most common manifestations of CA-MRSA are skin infections such as necrotizing fasciitis or pyomyositis (most commonly found in the tropics), necrotizing pneumonia, infective endocarditis (which affects the valves of the heart), or bone or joint infections. CA-MRSA often results in abscess formation that requires incision and drainage. Before the spread of MRSA into the community, abscesses were not considered contagious because it was assumed that infection required violation of skin integrity and the introduction of staphylococci from normal skin colonization. However, newly emerging CA-MRSA is transmissible (similar, but with very important differences) from Hospital-Associated MRSA. CA-MRSA is less likely than other forms of MRSA to cause cellulitis.
In some cases S.aureus has caused death in healthy individuals with a few hours.
MSNBC: New drug-resistant superbugs found in 3 states , Gene can spread person-to-person; all patients had been treated in India The Associated Press , updated 9/13/2010 3:59:12 PM ET
BOSTON — An infectious-disease nightmare is unfolding: A new gene that can turn many types of bacteria into superbugs resistant to nearly all antibiotics has sickened people in three states and is popping up all over the world, health officials reported Monday.
The U.S. cases and two others in Canada all involve people who had recently received medical care in India, where the problem is widespread. A British medical journal revealed the risk last month in an article describing dozens of cases in Britain in people who had gone to India for medical procedures.
How many deaths the gene may have caused is unknown; there is no central tracking of such cases. So far, the gene has mostly been found in bacteria that cause gut or urinary infections. Scientists have long feared this — a very adaptable gene that hitches onto many types of common germs and confers broad drug resistance.
I know this is the USA and all, and we are supposed to have tested water systems, but I have to say it sounds like what you might expect if there were sewage in the water supply.
For the last 40 years I've had a staph infection that has ruined jobs and friendships. Over the years I've been to countless doctors and hospitals, including Mayo Clinic and the Stanford Hospital looking for a solution. I've been treated like a lab rat, observed by a host of doctors, poked, probed, stuck, x-rayed and enough biopsy's for two people, all to no avail. Only one sulfur drug has worked, but you can't take it forever because of the side effects. What started out as a small red sore's breaks open, dries and scabs over, only to be ripped off if its in contact with clothing or bed sheets. Try sitting in class for an hour and then having to stand up knowing a sore the size of a silver dollar is just waiting to be ripped open again. We need to have more research into the staph problem that we have in our country. My problem goes on, but hopefully research will find an answer for this problem we have.
Tony, several years ago on either 20/20 or 60 Minutes they did a story about super infections. Several people interviewed had acquired life threatening infections that were untreatable due to resistance to all antibiotics. These individuals had all gone to Europe ( I believe it was Germany) to be treated. They used something called a "fauge". It was successful for all of the individuals. Hope this helps.
My daughter's 22 yr old boyfriend has had 3 SEVERE staph/MRSA infections in the last year. He's a full time college student. All three infections were on his face. He was slow to respond the 1st two times and it was large, severe infection. 3rd time, we got him to go in sooner and it was much easier to treat. He was told this will go on for the rest of his life, he'll never be completely rid of it. He was also told that SUGAR is a big factor in this. It feeds on it. Coincidentally, he's a BIG POP DRINKER! I am hopeful that he can cut back or eliminate his pop intake and give himself a better chance at no further re-occurrence. It's very scary to see someone's face that you love/care about swell up with pus. His vision was threatened last time when it was close to his eye socket. Please, if you are in an environment (such as dorm living) where you are likely exposed to this, watch for sores that are tender and red and flare up suddenly. DON'T IGNORE THIS! See a doc immediately. It could save your life! :)
My God people. Big fricken deal. They got a couple of open wounds, rub some Neosporin on it and cover it with a band-aid. Everyone needs to panic. get over it, its a little sore on some dudes leg that you dont even now.
I've worked in an ER for 10 years, part of the problem is triple antibiotic ointments like neosporin! The more (bugs) your exposed to the more your immune to.....all you need is soap and water.
Tony, Im sorry to hear of your trouble. I think it is Phage therapy you all may be talking about. I have a suggestion. No guarantees but perhaps its worth a shot. We use Virgin Organic Coconut Oil to cook and in smoothies and recipes after reading about its antibacterial, antiviral and other good qualities. Chronic UTIs stopped and fever blisters stopped. Maybe you could give it a shot? Lots of people use it on their skin for healing but I am talking about actually eating it. The virgin organic is cheapest at Moutaint Rose Herbs and it has a slight coconut smell but we love it. Try to get at least 3 Tablespoons a day for the health benefits. I hope you find relief.

It is time to be sane.

on the backs and heads of ants in tropics and molecules in roaches are antibodies that will kill the super bug. how are the they coming with this?
That would be a good thing, but all current imperical data indicates that NOBODY gets out of this world alive, so something is going to getcha!

What's worse than Lobsters on your piano???
Crabs on your Organ!

No the main results would be cholera or ecoli. Both can also be fatal.
Jehovah the one true God sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins. Today is a great day to ask Him to forgive you of your sins. God bless you.
Paul whats that got to do with a mrsa infection, pay attention

Thanks, I may have seen the same program but Europe is out of the question.
