We should be cautious about over-interpreting results from early stage clinical trials. During my Oncology training, I was subject to much early hype on Interleukin-2, which promised to be the same type of game-changer as PLX-4032. However, after all was said and done, it was approved for treatment of only one type of cancer, renal cell carcinoma. Malignant Melanoma is a stranger disease, affected by individual changes in immune response and other factors. However, the fact that PLX-4032 exhibits for the first time, a "Lazarus effect' (taking dying, moribund patients and improving their physical performance status greatly so that they can walk, eat, and even work), gives greater hope for the future. Let's hope so and cross our fingers.
