I was in the grocery store yesterday and a mother and daughter were in front of me. The daughter was about 18 or 19 and was wearing pants that had "Apple Shaped" stitched on the two back pockets.
I enjoyed the quality of the stitching very much and I have to say that there isn't anything wrong with apple shaped body parts although the mother seemed to not like me enjoying the daughter's elegantly worn advertisement for the autumn pome fruit.
It's about time for scientists to face the fact that much of obesity is due to genetics! This horrible guilt trip that doctors and society put on overweight people is extremely cruel and unhelpful.
The poor results diets give have proven them to be wrong so repeatedly, one can't help but wonder what took them so long to face the truth.
If you struggle with your weight, one area you might want to explore is the relationship between certain prescription drugs and weight gain. Some drugs have side effects which may lead to symptoms, such as fatigue, gastric reflux or increased appetite; any or all of which may contribute to routine overeating and weight gain. IF you suspect that one or more of your prescription drugs is contributing to weight gain, you should make an appointment to discuss the matter with your Primary Care doctor...Apple turned banana
While on the subject of prescription drugs some of the noted side effects are weight gain. I know that prednesone and valproic acid (depakote) are notorious for causing weight gain. As are many other mood altering drugs. It might be time for people to start learning coping skills and STOP with the mood altering stuff.
This is not true for those who really need the drugs---people with bi-polar, honest anxiety and depressive disorders or schizophrenia.
But for those who can't sleep, or get worried and frustrated slow down and get over it. DOCS please quit handing out pills like they are candy with side effects like weight gain. It makes YOU a BIG part of the problem.
DOCS please quit handing out pills like they are candy with side effects like weight gain.
How about quit handing out pills like they are candy ... period. I saw a study recently that found that 85% of prescribed medication have zero impact on the supposed problem that it was prescribed for. Big Pharma and the FDA are not your friends people.
"while genes do play a role in obesity and weight problems, they stressed that they account for only a fraction of the reason people are overweight with the main culprits being a bad diet and lack of exercise."
Yes, clearly genes are to blame(sarcasm). Why don't we just go back to pretending it's "disease" since that worked so well, take personal responsibility completely out of the equation.
The headline here is completely misleading, and seeing how Americans' attention spans are, they are going to simply believe they can blame their genes for their laziness.
Yeah, I got into this article for 10 seconds and saw that quote . . . get a clue MSNBC editors.
Why should people take personal responsibility for their weight? We're already to the point where people are blaming caffeine for killing people and it's apparently an acceptable argument to put in front of a jury.
Well, we all know certain "lucky" people who can eat anything and everything... and yet they don't gain weight. So in that way, genes of course play a part. But for most people, especially as they age, it's what they eat that is a big part of the problem. Except for temporary benefits, diets don't work for these people, only lifestyle changes will work. And that's very difficult for most to have the determination and willpower to achieve.
The point is that genes can predispose us to something, but you still have to overeat in order to get fat. So in other words, two people of the same size who eat the same diet can gain different amounts of weight, depending on their genes. But again, at the end of the day you are still choosing what, and how much, you eat.
If you are fat it is your own fault. I can't wait to see how many people use this argument now. Yeah I take pills that "can lead" to weight gain. But I don't LET THEM. If I need to cut calories and work out more, I will.
Has anyone else noticed: Scientists and Engineers hardly ever get called by their names. They are always listed as "Scientists said this..." or "Engineers develop a new blah blah blah..." It doesn't even matter that they could have discovered something huge and life changing, or that maybe there were only two scientists or engineers who made the breakthrough. Nope, doesn't matter, they are not good enough to get their names mentioned.
Yet, if Paris Hilton forgets to wear her underwear, or some obscure singer who hit it big in the 1940's dies, their name is not only mentioned, but it's included in the title. Yup, if you entertain people, you are worth knowing by name. If you spend your whole life learning mathematics, physics, or chemistry and applying your knowledge to solve problems, you are just a nameless insect. Welcome to Consumer society.
Well, if we knew who these prevaricated individuals were, then we'd be able to hold them directly accountable for their junk science.
First of all, this really isn't new news. They already did this one years ago. Second of all, everyone can become obese if they consumer more than their metabolic rate can handle. But to hell with those kinds of notions in this politically correct society, this empire of @!$%#. It couldn't possibly be your own fault that you're a lazy fat ass.
This relentless brainwashing of the masses by big brother mass media into thinking they're all poor little victims needs to stop. It's pathetic, it is a contributing factor to our decline, and meanwhile, the Chinese are putting in 110% to become THE Global Superpower of the 21st century.
I know people who can genuinely gain weight eating 1700 calories per day, while I am 5'9", 170 lbs with 11% body fat and take in 3500 calories per day. It used to be 4500 calories per day, but I'm 32 and my metabolism is a bit slower. Obviously genetics are one factor, exercise/activity level and diet being the others.
Not to worry, we are all well known by our names by the right people... Actually saying things like "scientists" or "engineers" makes it less personal and therefore gives the statement statement "the seriousness of institutionalized entity".
It sure as heck sounds more formidable to say "the American engineers developed the most advanced tool for process control in the world" as compared to "Thomas and John worked for 2 years in their back room on a way to use process sensor data to predict mfg quality of a product-in-process 30 minutes into the future sort of like you do with weather prediction" (which by the way is one damn cool piece of science).
How about it being your own fault for eating the wrong foods and not moving off the couch or from behind the computer??? It's so easy to blame everyone and everything including our "genes." It's so much easier than accepting responsiblity for our own poor eating habits and our own lack of exercise. I made the same mistake and paid for it. I had to take drastic measures, but I did it.
So, how about it?
How about we stop feeding our children and ourselves fatty, salty, sugary fast foods and actually do something physical like walking, hiking, etc.? Americans are killing themselves and we will die painfully, miserably through diabetes, heart disease, strokes, cancer, etc. And your family will suffer along with you.
Quite literally, they'll be suffering right along with you because they're in the same boat, so to speak.
Americans are fat, lazy, complacent, in debt up to their eyeballs, don't want to actually work for a living, want a freebie handout from the government at every turn, and then wonder why the government is spending money like there's no tomorrow hint: because there won't be one at this rate of increase in apathy and selfishness.
The article said quite clearly that diet and exercise are by far the biggest causes of obesity. The fact that genes play a part doesn't mean you can blame your weight on genes, it means that two people who live the same lifestyle can end up at different weights depending on their genetic predispositions.
I would love to blame my genes, but I'm afraid it has a lot more to do with the Pepsi and chocolate :) Sorry, genes or no genes, if I don't eat too much and move a lot, I weigh less, no matter who my mom is. Darn it!
And as for the engeineers and scientists not being named, they are when they get their discovery printed in the journals out about their own fields. They know each other. They say actually that the scientific world is more cutthroat than the business world when it comes to recognition and credit.
Yeah, but these so called scientists also play a highly subjective game of sucking each other off instead of actually doing sound science in these "Scientific Journals."
Jan Hendrik Schön is a classic example of so called "peer reviewed" fraud going on for years in a highly reputable scientific journal.
I can imagine genetics playing a great role in it. If your father, for instance, looked like Danny Devito there's a good chance you won't look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. I can eat all the right food, do the exercises. and live a spartan life yet I'll still be an old, bald coot who may be a little skinnier but still looks like my father at the same age. So sue me.
We are what we eat, I haven't said anything new: We cannot continue to eat the same foods and expect different results. Every fat person that I know eat far too much fried foods, rich desserts, chips, breads and cheese. I like that stuff too but that food should be eaten once in a while. Certainly not everyday. I know people who has never exercised. Fat people do all of the wrong things. Genetics has a minute part in all of this. The Danny DaVito thing hold true, though.
BMI, is a bunch of bunk. It dosen't take into consideration muscle mass. Muscle weighs more then fat. A man can weigh 295 lbs., be 6 ft, and according to BMI, is obease. This same man can be a power lifter, or body builder, who trains very hard, can bench press 500lbs, lift the front end of a car, has 21 in arms 50 in chest, a 42 waist. and still be considered obease. Come on, we have come further along in determining a persons health then BMI.
Too bad they didn't tell us anything new. However, there must be something in the genetic component. All the women in my family, as they get older, are apple-shaped. It doesn't matter how thin they were when they were younger. There's not a pear-shape among us. In my husband's family, all the women are pear-shaped - they carry all their weight on the hips and thighs.
The prediction is that 75% of Americans will be overweight or obese by 2020. Less than a decade away. Guess I'll have to adjust to being a minority in that field. I may want to start applying for affirmative action tax breaks now, while the getting is good.
What a load of garbage. Do we really need an international team of more than 400 scientists to tell us that the differences in the shapes of our bodies is due to our genes? Wow! Duh! I never knew that.
Are these scientists simply carrying on this crap research in order to get funding, or what? Any high school student can tell you that the reason we are apples, or pears, or tomatoes, or whatever, even big long bananas, is because of our genes. This doesn't absolve us of the responsibility to eat well and exercise.
You may not have the body of a fitness model, but that's not the point. Being physically active and eating healthy, regardless of how you end up being shaped, is what's important.
One important finding DID come from this study: that specific genes have been identified that distribute your fat in either a pear or an apple shape, particularly in women. AND that altering those certain genes MIGHT be able to turn an apple-shaped-prone person into a less risky pear-shaped person.
So you'd still have extra fat (due mostly to poor diet and lack of exercise), but if you could become more pear-shaped, you'd lower your risk of diabetes and heart disease.
No... not bad genes, bad eating habits and no exercise. I am somewhat overweight myself. I know it is because I don't exercise enough and because I don't always eat what is best for me. There are certainly some genetic components and hormonal influences, but this does not make up the majority of causes of obesity.
I grew up with terrible eating habits. My mother basically let me eat what ever I wanted to eat. Fortunately, I was extremely active and could never gain weight. My weight as an adult stayed at 114 lbs forever. And that sounds skinny for a 5'6" woman but it was not for lack of trying. I ate constantly. But I was a nurse and walking those long hallways will keep the weight off you if you do it enough and you walk at a fast pace. Plus, we went out dancing on every day off and every night after work. With all the exercise, I never had to worry about what I ate.
Now however as I have grown into a more sedentary lifestyle, I see the results of eliminating all that activity. Basically I was getting 8 hours of exercise a day. But not any longer. And if you are going to make a great stride in weight loss you have to exercise... period. And you have to do it for longer than 30 minutes a day to make an impact. My problem now is with motivation. It is hard to get started on a walking plan.
We don't need studies to tell us this.. If you take in more calories than you expend, you will gain weight.
yes behavioral addictions like smoking alchoholism, drug abuses, abusing women/ men, gambling, stealing lying, cheating, etc. etc. etc.
are because of genes also... /end sarcasism.

When I was staying in Mississippi for a short while I couldn't help but notice that practically EVERY female over the age of about 25 was shaped like either a pumpkin, a pear, or a potatoe. (This was especially true among the Black females). It's definitely not a state to go to if you're a girl-watcher. Not racist or sexist...just observant.
Oh, yes, certainly, it's the genes' fault, not the fact that moose-like, gluttonous individuals eat way too much, stuff their faces with all the starchy, fat-filled food they can, and don't even think of exercising, or in too many cases, even getting their morbid, chucky backsides off the couch.
To heck with the apple or pear, I'd like to be shaped like a big long banana.
Well part of me is shaped like a big loong banana. ( cymbal crash)
I was in the grocery store yesterday and a mother and daughter were in front of me. The daughter was about 18 or 19 and was wearing pants that had "Apple Shaped" stitched on the two back pockets.
