Good Lord, it seems as if EVERYDAY, the intelligence of the people in this country gets lower and dumber. There's just no other way to put it. Plain and simple.

I just don't understand how anyone can be so careless and nonchalant with this or any other diseases.
This would be and "oh well" if this attitude didn't spread a PREVENTABLE DISEASE, that does not discriminate, and will affect EVERYONE and ANYONE who comes in contact with the people in AND out of the "business" - even innocent babies who may be born as a result of this contact - because no one wants to wear condoms. This is just a result of these choices.

I think Thunderproof was saying this isn't actually surprising, but is perplexing how anyone would be surprised by it. I've been hiv poz since 1982. I knew I was infected because all my friends started dying and were all gone by 1985. Nobody was taking the meds because the azt was killing you just as fast as the disease was. I know I was irresponsible for getting infected for not using a condom. But it 1982 and nobody not even straights were using condoms back then. Nobody actually knew how you were catching the hiv virus to start with. But they do know today and it is nothing but stupidity for anyone to have unprotected sex, NO excuse at all. I even hear of people wanting to be infected so they can just stop worrying about it and not have to use a condom. This world is getting stupider by the minute. It's not a death sentence any longer as long as you take you meds, but even that can be hell cause of the side effects of the drugs. USE A CONDOM.

I thought there was a period of time where you can have a negative blood test and still infect others. Apparently, this is what happened. Sex isn't the only way of catching hiv. Nothing in the article said sex was how the person caught hiv. Just as likely as sex being the way this person caught hiv, so is there the chance this person shares needles off the set as well. Condoms doesn't prevent that.

I am not a fan of this particular genre of movie's, but don't fault anyone who is. What bothers me though is this industry's apparent disinterest in taking the lead in making barrier use, whether it be condom's are those used for oral sex, sexy? Why they wouldn't want to show that safe sex is far sexier than taking life forgranted, particularly when we know that porn stars routinely have more partners then they average person would ever admit to. Any why not show that a man that care's about HIMSELF is going to be more than willing to use a condom, thereby setting a great example for the young men watching?
Who care's what the public says they don't want. The health of the actor's should be of paramount importance, and having the opportunity to teach something without having to beat someone over the head with the lesson as is the case when an industry actor's is diagnosed HIV+, can never be a bad thing!

My reply: I agree with elements of both of your statements. But I'm not sure why McPeter is so angry with the OP. I would have thought that the attitude of letting others make their own decisions would extend to letting the OP share his personal thoughts on this situation.
He made no demands on the infected person OR on anyone else. He simply stated his view. (And already included a reasonable explanation on how it may affect him/others who did not make the same choice.)

I know we should all be wearing condoms with 'at risk' partners because of all the STD's out there yada, yada, yada....! However, I feel I'm speaking for many men when I say how much I absoulutely loathe wearing a condom. When I wear a condom, I'm immeadiately thinking I should should just grab a porno and do the five knucle shuffle, because that will be as pleasurable as having sex with a condom. The people who are assuming they will have to pay for the person's treatment need to get educated about the adult entertainment industry. First of all, the performers are well paid. The industry also provides them with very decent health benefits.
How do we know this person didn't get HIV from someone who had been exposed, but hadn't tested positive yet? It was his own decision not to wear a condom.
Another point, these actors are paying taxes, just like the rest of us working stiffs. These people are NOT in the same situation as an illegal prostitute.
It really makes me sick how many hypocrites who probably bankroll the porn industry are weighing in making harsh judgments. First of all, if people didn't buy the porn where they aren't using protection, then they would only make porn where it is used.
HIV isn't the only STD out there, either. There are a few that stay with you the rest of your life, too. One of my friends got herpes from her husband who cheated on her, does she deserve to have herpes and have to face the cost of the treatment for the rest of her life? Unfortunately, neither had a decent job, and guess who's paying for her treatment?
Another thing, most, if not all of us have at least one moment in our lives where, if a certain event was all that someone knew about us, we would all be judged and found guilty of bad judgment at the very least. I don't judge people by one event in their lives, just like I don't want to be judged if the situation was reversed.
I'm sure everyone has a reason for feeling the way they do, but please remember the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." There are no exceptions in that. It doesn't say, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, unless they belong to a different political party, go to a different church, work a job you don't agree with, etc."
The answer to all this is, as usual, laws need to be on the books to protect the workers as in all other types of businesses. OSHA has strick lews that are enforced for workers, why not have a strick set of alws that not only require neg. HIV tests but prevention by requireing the use of condoms in every porn film made and sold in the US (no matter where it was made). Letting the greedy purveyors of in the sex trade dictate the rules that end up killing people in like letting the inmates run the assylum. Who cares that the public "wants" to see no condom use. Are they the ones putting their lives on the line? Many people "want" to see child porn but it is illegal. It doesn't matter what the public wants in terms of condom use. Make it the industry standard and they will still rent it anyway. The porn induastry is missing an opportunity to actually do some good - if all their "actors" wear condoms they help encourage a culture of safe sex, which as amovement has lost a lot of momentum lately since people no longer die quickly from HIV. USE condoms and test regularly people, be in control of your health and life.

While I don't necessarily agree with that, I actually read his whole post and at least understood what he was trying to say. He conveyed his thoughts a lot more clearly and concise than some people who post and I can respect his honesty and his open point of view.

HIV does not have civil rights. The patients do, and they have the right to privacy concerning their health care. OSHA may not be able to get the names, but the health department is supposed to be notified by the treating physician anytime an STD is found. The health department then gathers information, including the names of people who were potentially exposed, and tells these people to go get tested.
Sex workers in Nevada bordellos are required weekly examinations. Companies like Hustler that don't want to use condoms should have similar requirements. This may not stop the transfer of all STDs, but it may catch them before they can spread far.

The Adult Industry does advocate safe sex. There are plenty of production companies that require the use of condoms for all of their films unless the genre is barebacking. If you look at all of Wicked Productions major releases condoms are used in every scene. I don't know how many porn actors and actresses have come and gone in the industry over the last 30 years, but I'm sure that it numbers in the thousands. I believe there have only been 14 documented cases of HIV in the industry. Therefore, statistically speaking, they do practice safer sex than the general public. I hope the actors are well compensated by the production companies for the "life and death" risks they take in these films by not practicing safe sex. I also hope the production companies provide excellent health insurance coverage for the individuals who go along with this Russian roulette. Hey, Idaho, your argument doesn't make sense. People elect to do all kinds of work where safety could be an issue if not for regulations. My employer could easily tell me to go into a TB infected patient's room without the REQUIRED protective equipment if there were no regulations for it. All of those special supplies cost a lot more than the basic ones and have to be discarded after EACH use (meaning once I walk out into the antechamber, I MUST toss it out and use a new set EVERY time I go into that patient's room...can't even begin to count how often that is depending on the patient). BUT, if an inspector sees me go into a room where special precautions must be used without them, my employer will be heavily fined as it is a public health issue. I could contract TB and spread to others without even knowing I have it. Does that mean because I knowingly elect to work with infectious patients, I should have to risk becoming ill myself? How are these actors any different than a healthcare worker in that regard?
Porn is a legal industry so if the current standards are not working to protect the actors, and in turn, the general populace , than they need to be made more stringent. Anyone thinking that a porn actor will not have unprotected sex outside of his or her employment activities is just being naive. Being exposed to HIV should not be a "punishment". BEing a pornographic film actor may not be the most prudent choice of occupations, but risking personal and public health should not be a requirement for employment. Imagine what most industries would be like if there were no workplace protections mandated by the government. I have no idea what you do for employment, but nearly all industries have some type of regulations to ensure employee health and safety. You might want to think about it in terms of your employment. What risks could you face that the government regulations prevent? Or if not you, someone in your family?

Laffs, I work with highly infectious patients so by your logic, if I know this and contract a disease, then too bad for me. HOWEVER, the government has mandated certain precautions must be in place to protect me and everyone else I come into contact with so I am fairly safe while doing my job. Why can't there be a rule about using condoms to protect these actors? Larry Flynt can talk about viewers' dislike of this image (code for diminished profits) all he wants. When public health is at issue and it is due to a work-related activity, then there should be some regulations. And don't say, government regulations shouldn't exist. The current ones are a far sight better than what used to occur...involuntary quarantine, a reactive method to ensure public health. Regulations are proactive and more effective.

The studio that paid for the tests will handle the case internally. That is why they test the actors. Every actor that has ever worked with the infected actor will be notified and every actor who has worked with those actors will be notified and so on. There is not a single studio that does not care about the health and safety of the actors as they are the means of income. They all want to attract the best and most popular actors in the business and spreading HIV is not the way to do that. There are far more dangerous occupations that injure and kill people and we don't discriminate against them and complain about the health care costs. People need to learn the law before they comment. It is against the law to report the name of any individual infected with HIV/AIDS or other STD. Yes they have to report to the health department and provide a list of any sexual partners and those people will be contacted. However, not even the partners will be told who possibly might have infected them. The health department must keep everything confidential and are bound by HIPPA as are all doctors or health care workers who might have this knowledge. If you had an infectious disease, you would not want everyone knowing about it because they would harass you about it. Only one person can tell the status of an individual with HIV and that is the person themself because they are protected under law just like you and me. People research the law around HIV/AIDS, STDs, TB. This is only newsworthy because they will use it as an example of how the porn industry needs to change.
The health deparment can do their best job of tracking the pyramid of sexual partners but it will never stop the spread of HIV. Aside from the lack of guarantee that those infected will be completely honest in providing their list of names, there's always that one unnamed one-night stand that creates a whole other pyramid. Someone will always get "missed" and pass it on unknowingly. By the time that unknown figures he/she is infected, the health dept. can start a whole other pyramid with potential no-name one-nighters that have already started their own infectious pyramids, and so on and so on. It's hopeless until there is a cure.

I don't think researchers are looking for a cure. Drug companies don't want cures, they want customers for life. When they run out of diseases to treat for life, they create more (like restless leg syndrome).
