Probably because of all the helicopter parenting the last couple of decades. We don't allow them to be independent enough, and that has it's consequences as it is in our nature to have that independence.
I think it's all BS. I'd make those same claims if I was a head shrink and needed the business. Now, I wonder...will Obamacare cover all the sick kids? Sheeeesh!!!
The scariest thing I have ever experieced was my daughter suffering a panic attack while in my arms. Although it might be hard to believe, and there are likely many reasons for this, but there are young people suffering from treatable mental disorders. Making fun of them or calling it all "BS" does not get this young people help, and will likely simply lead to more adults ending up an chronic drug abusers both legal and illegal, living off the tax payer in one way or another.
You better hope Obamacare covers "all the sick kids"! Unfortunately, it is hard to find a provider of mental healthcare that is willing to accept what companies like United Healthcare are willing to pay, so as is usual those with money will get help, while those who don't will have to someone fend for themselves...
Obamacare won't cover anything because it will be repealed. I guess we all need to go back to school and be retrained as head shrinks...1 in 5? That's f'ing BS promoted only by doctors who profit from people believing they're not normal.
Why had I "better hope Obamacare covers all the sick kids"? I won't do anything of the sort. Take responsibility for your own children. You made them, they're your responsibility, not mine, not anyone else's.
What 1 in 5 this is complete BS, I have four teenagers still and home and I can say that it is more likely 4 out of 5, and 100% of parents dealing with teenagers ends up with a mental health problem.
Just being funny not in anyway trying to diminish those that have real problems.
Healthcare reform will be repealed? Then go ahead and tell the parent who's child can get healthcare now even though they have a pre-existing condition, that you believe paying for wars is more important then allowing than child to have insurance coverage. Or tell the Medicare recipient that getting a yearly physical, although proven to bring down insurance costs as illnesses are caught early, that their health is not nearly as important as making sure some billionare gets a tax cut! Or perhaps you can tell the woman who can now get a breast cancer screening with no co-pay that you feel that her life is not worth more than proving something to those pesky Dems.
See, although it sounds really good to say that you are going to repleal Obama care, the fact of the matter is that there are parts that are good for America, and other parts that need to be tweaked. Go ahead. Cut off your nose to spite Obama, then realize that all you have done is ruin your own chances of staying in office!
Based on my observation of teen behavior, I would have guessed the number to be considerably higher than 20%. Seems to me the MAJORITY of teenagers are mental.
The scariest thing I have ever experieced was my daughter suffering a panic attack while in my arms.
That's when a strong shake of the shoulders and a loud "SNAP OUT OF IT" comes in handy.
Wow, What a bunch of Heartless A-holes on this thread. God I hope you don't have children.
Let's see what I can address person by person:
Jedah - My mother was what could be a helicopter parent: called teachers to "check up" on me, had them fill out daily progress reports so she could monitor my behavior (and then chastise me when it wasn't up to her standards), search my room and backpack constantly to make sure I wasn't hiding things from her, etc. this was in 2nd grade. No one should be surprised or wonder why in 5th grade I got so nervous i developed a very nasty rash that turned out to be shingles, something that normally only happens to adults with weakened immune systems (very mild case of the chicken pox resulting in low immunities to the Herpes Simplex 2 and 3 families, CHECK) and/or ones that are under an incredible amount of stress (DOUBLE CHECK). So did helicopter parenting affect my mental issues? Yes, but not because momma took so much care that i didn't know how to function on my own, but because she put so much pressure on me I barely knew how to function for fear of making her angry and letting her down. And before you ask how horrible of a child i was, at age 9 I dared to (gasp) not get straight A's and had focus/ADHD issues. In high school, I was SO AWFUL because I drove the car only to school for my track and cross country meets and had one boyfriend my senior year. I didn't smoke, I didn't drink, I didn't party, but I dared not clean my room to her standards and I no longer wanted to play the piano. Yep i was awful.
Canttakenomore: I can't take no more of you, so shut up. Just because the man is president doesn't mean that is was his original idea and it "just" happened to be thought of in the last 24 months. If anything, you should be calling it "Kennedycare" but hey, that wouldn't be trendy and earn you props from your fellow tea-baggers. And what exactly is normal? I would LOVE to see you go back to school and get a doctorate in psychology and become a "head doctor." I'm sure you would learn all sorts of things like how to accurately diagnose a mental disorder, learn how chemical imbalances change moods, perceptions and interactions with others, oh and also that lovely semester lesson of "I'm so sick and i can't get my fever to come down, but since i'm not working and am a full time college student I have no medical coverage because those @!$%#s on the internet forced congress to repeal national healthcare because it was so bad, and now 'I don't have $200 for the doctor visit and antibiotics prescription."
Neversurrender: that sounds great. Why don't you go talk to the homeless people that have a true mental illness that makes it so they cannot work or function and get in touch with their parents. I'm sure they would love to chat about their "responsibilities" and how their son or daughter refuses to contact them or take medication and therefore ;lives under the bridge. Also I'm sure they will like to know their child is alive too....
Orbust: I have an above average IQ. Not sure how a change in 2008 would have helped me back in 1995, but go brew another cup of tea and I'm sure you will feel better; I'm still happy that my president can form complete sentences. Perhaps you should go back to high school and take English writing; they can teach you how to properly form a paragraph and show you why "america" isn't a complete sentence. There you will learn what happens with the "popular kids" see any kind of weakness in you and exploit it until you end up hysterically crying one day in class because you are that close to breaking down due to 8 years of being tormented for wearing the wrong style of jeans or not having a new lunch box or not having parents with a brand new car.
Robbob, while trying to be funny, hit on something; most teenagers have issues. My friends and I used to say that everyone had their own "issues freight liner" that followed them around and the ones that were the more healthy were the ones who at least acknowledged it's existence. There's a lot of pressure put on young people in the last 20 years; we are expected to get 4.0 in calculus, be uber-popular with our peers, go onto college and get a scholarship because your parents are barely making it and don't have any savings for you, then get a job, work on your masters while trying to get a career established and meet someone to marry and have kids with, and did i mention having a nice car and a nice house so that you can be "comfortable?" You ask any 16 year old to acknowledge THAT much pressure and most of them are going to blow a gasket. it's taken me 9 years to realized that just because I don't have a Bachelors degree doesn't mean I'm a failure at life and a worthless human being.
Not a Socialist: You sound like a real warm and fuzzy kind of person. You even had a panic attack? You are one of those people that says someone having a migraine should just "take a Tylenol and walk it off" aren't you? Shaking someone and essentially invalidating what they are freaking out about will only confirm that what they are panicking about makes them a bad person and thus makes the attack worse. Until you are sitting in your bedroom folding laundry and literally feel the walls around you closing in and end up in the fetal position crying and half breathing for a HALF HOUR (while knowing you are completely irrational but still cannot calm yourself down) because you are afraid that your new boyfriend will come over and see that your clothes are not folded just right and will therefore leave you for being less of a human being, i suggest you fully STFU and stay away from anyone with a life crisis, social concern, and/or generally isn't completely devoid of emotions and feelings less you have to deal with them needing "a strong shake."
NO, this isn't a pity me party. that's not at all what I want from this. This is a rant, about what the hell I went through and have tried to come out on the other side of. This is also a testament to the internet; who wants to bet that none of these ass hats would DARE say any of this in real life to their child, spouse, or friends because "that's different"?
Worse than helicopter parents are the ones who think that their kids do no wrong and have no boundaries for their kids, look at the parents who threw the home coming party in Florida for 500 of their teen age kids friends, with Kegs.
One of my daughters best friends was given $80K by her grandmother on her 16th birthday with no restrictions, in 3 years she had blown most of it on 10 different cars, and is now almost homeless because she couldn't understand that the world doesn't owe her a living, she has dropped out of 3 different collages and has nothing to show for herself. She has real problems now because of her attitude and can't finish anything.
Sounds like you mother wanted you to grow up with some values. My mother watched over us as carefully as possible and yet did not tie us down. I believe that if there were more parents who cared enough to STAY involved in their lives our children would have a better chance at being healthy, normal (what ever that means) children. Is being a bit off your rocker normal as a teen YES it sure is.
I never allowed my children to do as they please, I gave them guidelines and expected them to be followed. I have 3 very well adjusted, grown children who are very vialble in our US community. We have to take responsibility for our children and ensure that they turn out to be decent people.
I have to agree with those citing BS as the culprit here.
Just as drug companies INVENT "disorders", the psychiatric community will infer mental issues are more prevelant than ever before, simply because they have found more ways to call basic life scenarios, "mental disorders".
"Johnny turned in his homework late, I'm sure we can find a category for him!"
"Must be problems at home, he needs therapy six days a week".
ANYONE I've ever known who spent an inordinate amount of time at a therapist's office, ends up more screwed up than before they started "treatment".
OBVIOUSLY there are some screwed up kids who benefit from psychiatric therapy, but to imply that 1 in 5 have "mental issues", is not only BS, but incredibly irresponsible, and serves only to cheapen the profession of helping people with REAL issues.
We've left them no choice but to have "disorders". Someone sent me this in an email. I think it offers the beginning of an explanation:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1957 - Ants die.
2009- ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents -- and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.
Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2009 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The school gets extra money from the state because Jeffrey has a disability
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2009 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy
No, I have an extremely strong, secure and self confident mental state of mind. You, clearly, do not.
Holy @!$%#, woman, you got bigger problems than "life crises and social concerns". Quick!! Check thee into the psychiatric ward, not just for your sake, but rather for everyone around you.
I guess now a days, kids are pampered so much that they believe everything in life is very easy. They are superior than elders and nobody can or should question them. So they spend their time in fantasy and worried about their sex life. When they start facing real world, they succumb to pressure and have panic attacks. This can all be solved if teacher and parents have more authority in schools and homes. May be cops should also have authority of questioning if they see a small kids smoking or doing odd behavior at public places. Make their study environment and sports/other activities more competitive & disciplined. Have them more focused and goal oriented and less focus on girlfriend/boyfriend thing or sex. It can all come after they are graduate and sensible enough to understand.
It's the parents fault! I mean really the 1st thing you learn in any psych class is how those 1st seven years of a kid's life shape you for the rest of your life.....parents if your kids are having issues you are responsible....do not kill the messenger here....denial is a deep dark river and a lot of you are swimming in it!
ClintHorace- I have to agree with you, thanks for saying all that for me ;)
Gracie Lou-
"NO, this isn't a pity me party. that's not at all what I want from this. This is a rant, about what the hell I went through and have tried to come out on the other side of. This is also a testament to the internet; who wants to bet that none of these ass hats would DARE say any of this in real life to their child, spouse, or friends because "that's different"?"
HUH? Got alot of time on your hands don't you? Would dare say WHAT to their kids or friends? I AM sorry that YOUR childhood was damaging to you. From your "rant" it dosen't sound as though you have let go of the angst of teenhood. For yourself and your future you really need to acknowledge that you are an adult now and create the life YOU want.
And Zumia below this post- ABSOLUTELY!!! As with ClintHorace above, thank you for saying that better than I would have!
@ClintHorace- You are spot on. A lot of the so called "illnesses" are made up, just to get extra money for Big Pharma, and the public schools who assist the "diagnoses".
They gave us a survey in class once, and thank God I knew how to recognize what the questions were really asking. Like, "Was there a time when nothing was fun for you?" meant "Are you sad and obsessed with death and suicide?" I just said what they wanted to hear and it worked.
I feel so sorry for all these kids that are drugged out of their minds, just to satisfy their teachers. If a child can't sit still, he's yanked out of his seat, thrown into the psychologist's office, and evaluated, asked a bunch of confusing and disturbing questions that no child should ever have to answer. Or if a child gets distracted, their drugged on dangerous medications, and end up sitting in a trance like state, so the teachers won't have to deal with NORMAL childhood behavior. They'd rather have good little zombies, then normal kids in their class.
Mental health, I swear, has got to be one of the most corrupt industries in healthcare, and is one of the reasons I have no trust for doctors. I know what it's like to be drugged. Side effects: numbness to any emotion except sadness, anger, and cynicysm. Pissing all the time. Wanting to die rather than live another day on those pills. Parents, don't do this to your children, you will cause permanent damage to your child's bodies, it isn't worth the risk. Many of these drugs aren't even meant for children under eighteen, so keep them away from them if you love them at all.
Janice, I grew up smack dab in the middle of your timeline for reactions to "Jeffrey's" behavior, and I was paddled repeatedly by principals, teachers and my father before I was put on Ritalin (yep, I got the worst of both worlds). Trust me, it didn't do a thing to change my behavior. Neither did the Ritalin, but the years of therapy (including family therapy) as a kid did help a lot in the long run.
To me, this sounds like the mental state of the average teenager since forever, and teens have more pressure now than ever. If you can, remember what it was like being a teenager, and then tell me that you didn't have panic attacks (tests, late homework, oral reports), anxiety (over everything), social phobia (do I really even have to go there?), mood disorders (hormones) and substance abuse (the alcoholic jocks and the stoner crowd).
I really believe that we are an over-diagnosed culture. Everything is a disorder, to such a magnitude that one cannot point out a single "well-balanced" individual. So what's normal? Because of this, we are over-medicated and the pharmaceutical companies are making a fortune off of our inability to cope with life without their "help".
Couldn't agree more. Just look at the commercials...half of them are "feel good" drugs. Feel a little down...take this puppy upper. Feel a little giddy...here's a doggie downer.
Think about this.......The people pushing all these drugs on us are the same hippies of the past that were aways experimenting with differet drugs to help them escape reality......What ever happened to just dealing with life head on?
You know we don't have to let them push all these drugs. When my baby was accused of being ADD I went to the Pediatrician and he said. Lets do this. In the morning give him 1/4 cup of coffee with some milk and a little sugar in it and teach him to control his body. The coffee wakes up their mind and allows them to think more clearly. Teach him self-Control, in what he does and when he does it. He is the most calm man I have seen in a long time. DRUGS are not the answer. Watch out for those old hippies.
Years ago, my daughter's first grade teacher recommended we have her tested for ADD because she wasn't paying attention in class. I told him let's sit her in the front of the class and call her attention when she got distracted. That worked out great and he never suggested drugs or testing again. If we treat every growth adjustment as a disease and try to eliminate it with drugs we'll soon treat out all creativity, innovation, self-control, and self-responsibility. Our nation and culture will be as good as dead.
I suffered from panic attacks, for fear of a heart attack after I felt chest pain and palpatations. I suffered in constant fear for about a month before I wound up in the E.R. paralyzed by fear. The doctor ran some tests, determined I was only experiencing sever anxiety and an out-of-control adrenaline gland, and immediatly prescribed lorazepam to calm me down, but I only used 5 of those tiny tablets over the course of 3 months after that, since all I really needed was a doctor to tell me that I was fine and NOT having a heart attack.
Debora - I think you are onto something because my landlady/surrogate grandmother did the same with her hyperactive son in the 70's and it worked for her too. Even if stimulants work for ADD, why are we giving our kids pills that are the equivalent of methamphetamine without trying milder stimulants like coffee first?
My 7 year old was diagnosed with ADHD/ODD. We didnt' want to put her on drugs. Her school "recommended" it several times. Is she tough to deal with? Yes. But drugs are an absolute LAST RESORT. My husband was also diagnosed with ADD as a child, and is scarred from the label and how the drugs made him feel. Our daughter is EXACTLY like him; but the things that made his childhood so hard are also the things that make him a great leader and teacher. So is it a disease or a personality?
Balderdash. The criteria for these "diseases" is totally subjective. The shrinks decide what's a disease and what isn't by voting on it. They can't agree with each other on who's ill and who isn't. How scientific is that?
Sometimes life is hard, especially for teens. Sometimes it's really really hard. But that doesn't mean that someone has a "brain disease." Feelings aren't diseases and experiencing life isn't an illness.
I live in NYC, if you've been here, trust me, a lot of the folks you see muttering to themselves aren't on a bluetooth... most of the homeless I encounter tends to be a little nutty as well.
Talking to yourself isn't maldaptive behavior. RaySF, maldaptive behavior is required for a diagnosis. Nobody has been diagnosed with merely experiencing or feeling as a disorder.
I was fortunate to spend almost four years in China teaching English to a varity of ages ranging from six to forty. My views on certain things changed since that time as to how I perceive the American Medical Society as far as diagnosing kids with panic attacks, ADHD, and the list goes on. Not one time in China did I ever see any kid run to the doctor with their parents for any of the above mentioned labels the AMA places on our kids and take pills that some doctor hands out freely to keep the drug companies prospering such as we do in America. Drug companies not only push drugs on people, they make doctors richer by paying them incentives to push their drugs for them. The only thing parents need to do is simply tell their kids that no matter what test score they get on some test is that they will love them even more reguarless. The best pill I know of is love and understanding which is something that doesn't come in pill. The Chineese love their kids and the family unit sticks togather no matter what from the day they are born and never carry grudges. Children in China are expected to perfrom yes, just like anywhere else but everyone of these kids I taught helped each other withour fear of being put down by their fellow classmates. Drugs will NOT cure any of those symptoms more-over in many cases, has led to teenage suicide. Wake up America, spend time with your kids. Love is free, it costs nothing!!
Dear Bob, my wife and I taught English as a Foreign Language in China also, but our experience with the Chinese was obviously much different from yours. Not only from our personal experience, but from many studies done by professionals, there are many, many Chinese students who suffer various kinds of mental and emotional problems. My wife and I would get to know our students quite well, well enough that they would open up and tell us a lot of things. We would also conduct surveys in our classes regarding their homelife. For example, we would ask ouir classes, "How many of you get hugs from your parents?" Only one or two hands would ever go up in the classroom. Then we would ask, "How many of you never get hugs from your parents?" Almost every hand would go up in the classroom. Our surveys would continue in this way covering various aspects of family life, such as demonstrations of affection (verbal and nonverbal), the kind of relationship they had with their parents, the kind of relationship their parents had with each other, etc, etc. The Chinese do NOT display affection in their culture, except to either buy something for someone or give someone money. For example, our students frequently explained to us that the way their parents demonstrated their love to them was to either buy them something or give them money, or both.
Chinese children are not only expected to perform, but they are expected to perform ABOVE and BEYOND everybody else. The pressure to be the best is mind-boggling to say the least, which is one of the stresses in their lives that leads to the various emotional and psychological disorders...even suicide. One of the main things which actually holds Chinese society together is their incredibly strong sense of tradition and identity. They have an identity which is virtually ingrained in their genetic coding which says, "We are Chinese. And Chinese do things THIS way. And Chinese think THIS way. And THIS is what a Chinese IS."
Over the last 20 years, I've had the opportunity to see China change, and not all for the better. The same kinds of ills that plague American young people are plaguing Chinese young people more and more, and many of them find little support at home or at school.
This should be seen as a national emergency but in a nation that places little value upon its children it will simply be ignored as it has in the past. The major factor contributing to mental disorders in teenagers is the draconian, irrational, unhealthy, repressive social attitudes towards teenage sex forced upon children by an ignorant religious based society. It is yet another price that must be paid in the name of gods, ghosts, daemons, imaginary parent figures and a sin mentality that causes the faithful to live their lives in preparation for a fantasy afterlife. Children should not be taught to repress their sexuality to the extent of abstinence as a means of achieving a positive social identity. There is nothing wrong with sex or being sexual or expressing ones sexuality through engaging in sex with others without governments imposing anti-sex nonsense on children through attempts to make childhood sex illegal. Sex is normal, healthy, natural and indeed very human. The sooner we wake up to this the sooner we can stop wondering why so many teens and children elect to kill themselves rather than live in the hell we have created for them here on earth.
Is not that far of the mark.. too much emphasis on religion and magical thinking in our society. most people are taught to repress who they are in order to conform, that can only lead to mental issues..
Just imagine! There is a group of people in this country who want to protect a worthless fetus, but once that fetus becomes a human being, they ignore it for eighteen years and blame Hollywood when something goes wrong.
I have taught special education/at-risk kids for almost 30 years in 7 different states-inner city, suburbs, and rural areas. When I was in highschool in the mid 70's there were many kids who quit school as soon as they could or before. These kids were the underachievers, "weirdos" (as they were called) and usually drugs were involved. They didn't "fit in". They were social outcasts. How many of those kids could have been helped if we knew then what we know now. I wonder. Remember, there was a time when mental institutions and lobodomies (spelling ??) were the only "answers" for treating "crazy" people. My dad wasn't diagnosed with bi-polar disorder until he was 76. When he finally started taking medication his quality of life was so much better. His sister (my aunt) might not have taken her own life many years ago if she had been helped, (for now we look back and know she must have also been bi-polar also) I for one am thankful that our medical/educational community is acknowledging this issue and that there are ways to help those that suffer from forms of mental illness. My students and their parents are grateful also.
If there's truly an issue with someone, by all means, help them. I simply have a hard time believing 1 in 5 teens are screwed up...times have changed but people haven't.
I certainly believe it, because I see it everyday. You need to understand that the term "mental illness" is a very large "umbrella". There are a great many kids who do have some form of anxiety. Now whether it has to be diagnosed (as anxiety disorder) or if they are just counting X number of times a child has been in counseling/observed, etc. I don't know.
Actually, brain scans have shown that today's kids brains ARE different. Now kids are "surface learners", so it takes much more repetition for info to "stick". Whereas neurons are more embedded in our brains, this is not the case with today's kids. Computers, TV, fast paced lives all contribute to this.(Thus, some causes for ADHD) I teach much differently than I did 20 years ago. I get the same results, but the teaching HAS to be different. Teachers today have to be more intune with brain functioning than ever before.
Well, all I can say is, you haven't been in the school/kid environment for 30 years to have a valid opinion. We also have the breakdown of the family structure like never before. There is a classroom right now at my school that only has 6 students who come from a 2 parent home. My school is in the suburbs. Divorce rates are higher than ever. That has a tremendous effect on a child. And yes this can create havoc in a child's mind. You may think it is a load of "crap", but I deal with that "crap" everyday, and guess what-it exists and I have chosen to be part of the solution.
I cannot take the fact that libs are running this country into the ground. Bleeding hearts not wanting anyone to take responsibility for any of their own actions. There's always some lame ass excuse. I cannot take the fact that our community organizer in-chief wants to rob from those who work for a living and give it to those who feel the government owes them something.
I am one of those conservatives who are totally disgusted by the direction our country has been heading for the past 30-40 years. I am one who will do my part to remove the liberal scourge that graces the halls of congress.
I am also a conservative. I do not respect Obama or what he stands for. However, let me give you one example of why I am passsionate about what I do. My daughter is bi-polar. Before her diagnosis/meds, she tried to kill herself several times. I am thrilled beyond words that she now lives a normal, happy life. 30 years ago she would have been institutionalized. 50 years ago she probably would have had a lobotemy. I feel blessed and so does she. I'm glad we've come so far in treating mental illness. I don't see this as a gloom and doom issue necessarily, even though it is a real problem. Thank God there is now hope.
When you have a failing national economy. The first slashed buy all levels of government is health, and the first slashed with in health is mental health experts and programs. Second most single parents are not able to resolve the issue because of having to work 2 jobs. Just to keep a roof and pay the bills. With no one for these children to go to. Their children'sgeneration will increase in number their issues will be past down. If you look the rise in crime goes up as well
Not surprising considering the poor education system. It just doesn't work and should be gotten rid of. Although I think the actual statistics are higher.
And that's surprising because?? honestly, I would hate growing up today, too much pressure... Really too much of everything, kids can't be kids anymore. my five year old know as much as me at 10..
and Schools are ridiculous, someone I know has a 4 1/2 year old who got written up for "lewd" behavior for lifting a skirt.. amazing. My kids go to private, much better environment, and at least the school calls you first before sending in the rent a cops to tase your kid when there's an issue...
These teenagers have a problem now? Just wait until they enter the cut throat world of the adult. The struggle and the fight just to survive doesn't end until the Coroner sticks a toe tag on you.
Actually, I think being an adult is much easier than being a child today. I'm 53 years old and have taught school for almost 30 years, and I wouldn't want to be in these kids shoes today. I think I have it easy!
I'm older then you, and I'm glad that your life has been so easy, for the majority though it is not, not if you are honest. But you do make one point that I will expand on. I wouldn't want to be a kid today either, not with what they have to look forward to, which is pretty much a very bleak, dark, and broken world.
My life hasn't necessarily been easy, but comparatively it has.
My daughter has a learning disability and is bi-polar. She tried to kill herself on several occassions until she was diagnosed and medicated. I'm around mentally ill/academically at risk kids all day and then come home to the same thing. My father is bi-polar so I also grew up with this. No, some people would say that my life is difficult and they have. I just choose not to be a "victim".I think because of being so much involved in these people's lives has been so rewarding that I consider myself blessed, not cursed.
The term "difficult life" is subjective and relative. We all live in the good old USA. Tell a woman in Sudan how "difficult" your life is. Or go live there for a while and experience a truly difficult life.
Exactly! That's why I wasn't going to say anything until Michael opened the door. There's not a day that goes by that I don't think how fortunate I am to be living where I do. I feel very selfish at times.
Panic disorders and social phobia......I agree with others, that is typical teen-age angst.... This is newsworthy why??? Zumia was commenting that we are an over diagnosed society...totally true. No one can act a certain way without being labeled. It has become ridiculous the number of personality disorders and psychological issues that people have. Yes, there are instances where people are seriously impaired by their disability but in the grand scheme of things that is few and far between.
Being labeled isn't the same thing at all as being diagnosed. Any diagnoses requires maldaptive behavior. Typical teenage angst is not the same thing at all.
1 in 5 teens have a mental disorder!!!! Duhhhhh! Really, ya think???!!! Primarily, it's because their parents are jackasses, that and the fact you have to be too touchy-feely in today's society. Honestly, there's nothing quite like a good ole ass-whippin'!!! If I had a teenager right now that gave me attitude...I'd be goin' up the river.
Lets see.....a study done by a group who gets more money from their diagnosis if they can prove that more people can be diagnosed with their disorders....and the study proves what? GO FIGURE...
This is probably close to being true and has been for a very long time. I struggled in school and although I did OK and ran my own business for 30 years I wish that I had been diagnosed when I was a teen, or before. When I was 53 I was diagnosed with ADD and clinical depression.
Knowing what I know now it was rather obvious then. Psychology today is light years ahead.
I'm actually surprised the study found that ONLY 1 in 5 has mental issues. I'd say that's lowballng the actually numbers. It is a rare teen who does not have anxieties, exhibit some sort of behavioral problems, feel depressed, etc. It's part of adolescence.
True for some (many?) it's worse than for others because there is some greater issue like mental illness, but not every teen who exhibits these "problems" is suffering from one.
I would like to congratulate all the parents out there for doing a wonderful job in raising their kids instead of putting in late nights at the office or going out clubbing with girlfriends. Way to go, parents!
(pity clap)
Of course, the funny part will come in about forty years, after you've all been forgotten by the very children whom you have neglected and you're left with nothing but Friskey's Buffet.
I'm so glad that I don't have kids-because I wouldn't be able to handle most of those who do. If this figure doesn't prove that the government needs to license parenthood, nothing will.
These finding are clear evidence that the Psychiatric profession (not to be confused with Psychologists, Marriage and Family Therapists, etc.) has succeeded in over-diagnosing disorders that "require" medication. We are all, in our fear of missing something in our kids, all too willing to put them on meds rather than to see that so many of their issues are, infact, not unusual for teens. Teen life is tumultuous but not diagnostic of anything other than being a teenager most of the time. There is no way one in five teens is "mentally ill." No way. Big Pharma wins. We all lose. God forbid that we might need some therapy and have to admit to family problems. Nah! Just drug em.
I didn't see anywhere in the article where it suggested that 1 in 5 teens needed to be put on medication. There are plenty of other options that can help people deal with stress, anxiety, depression etc without them ever having to take medications.

LISTEN EVERYONE! People are born -- and always have been born -- with genes that pre-determine certain "mental disorders" or "mental traits". They are also starting to pre-determine the genes that make one more at risk for Breast Cancer; Alzheimers and Auto-Immune disorders. More "de-coding" is being done every day. We are slowing breaking that gene code! It's very exciting.
Bi-polar, depression, Austism and ADHD are genetically determined. It's a crap shoot when you have kids. Nothing pisses me off more are the self-righteous who blame parents, society, too much homework, Obama. Lady Gaga...
I raised 3 kids the SAME WAY... one is bi-polar, 2 aren't. Genetics.
I had social issues throughout school which I later learned, at 46, was caused by undiagnosed ADHD. There was no 'ADHD' that I ever heard of at that time. I was called names like "space cadet", "airhead". I interrupted people. I had a hard time listening to lectures. I would just zone out. Guess what? As a coping mechinism I turned to weed, alchohol and coke. Stuff to make teenagers better people, right?
If your kid had a broken leg, would you treat it? If she has anxiety, you, as a parent, must get help for her as well. It's a chemical issue in the brain. It is real. Trust me. A combo of exercise, foods, medicine and therapy could make a remarkable improvement. Undiagnosed and treated teenage ailments of 2010, for all you conservatives out there, may turn those teens into messed-up, drinking, street people, who the American taxpayers of 2040 will need to take care of for the rest of their lives!!!
The answer is a) diagnose b) Learn coping strategies c) treat
You people all Make me laugh, I just graduated from high school last spring and am now in my first Semester of College, If life as a teenager now is SOOOOOO much harder then when you went to school then your life was a joke. We live in a horrible world that you all ruined(thanks btw) we survive because we are kids. we adapt fast, the ones that can't change fail. Its called survival of the Fittest! Welcome to life.
Don't think i come from some rich family ether i worked industrial construction to pay for college i know how to work.
A valiant effort on posting why people should stop trying to attain happiness and satisfaction in favor of moving on with our lives while abiding by the concept of "survival of the Fittest."
Text, you have it all wrong. I raised 2 boys and I can say that it was harder as a teenager back in the 60's than it is now. We had no computers...we went to the library and looked it up. We actually read books too. We had no cell phones....we actually used land lines when our parents would let us. We had drugs pushed at us from every direction. There were no video games...we went outside and played....what a novel idea, huh? There was discipline in our schools and at home. My parents didnt try to be my "friend", they were too busy parenting. We also mowed grass, shoveled snow and raked leaves for money before we got that first part-time job. I have seen many of today's teens as spoiled, lazy, coddled and lacking in social skills. Your teen years were a walk in the park.
Well duhhhh ... in fact 5 in 5 teenagers have mental issues, and it's always been that way. This new crop of journalists are like babies who has just discovered their navels.
Sheeeesh!!!
I agree 100% catakeomore!!!
Well stated neversurrender!
Gracie...
No one cares what you think either...so go have a bad day, won't you?
Gracie,
Sounds like you mother wanted you to grow up with some values.
2009 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called.
Gracie:
No, I have an extremely strong, secure and self confident mental state of mind. You, clearly, do not.
Zumia...
Agree joebob...
No one takes responsibility for anything these days. There's always the "easy way out"...I say, suck it up boys (and girls).
Ahhh Jennifer! So I'm not the only one! Darn it though, I didn't get any "goodies", I should have taken the ER doc up on that offer ;)
Both. Drugs are for some (myself included) but not for everyone (like your husband).
I talk to myself sometimes. Personally, I don't think that signifies that I'm crazy.
OK, but it makes me really uncomfortable when people do that next to me....
Did you ever stop to think that maybe they just want you to move.....?
I think we all need to talk to ourselves once in a shile. A good sane conversation is most important in this sane world.
Galaxy, I truly hope you and your wife gave out those needed hugs often
Patrick...
Sorry, but I think you are full of it...much like the shrinks who believe there's a real problem.
Patrick is one of those hippies I mentioned in an earlier post.
Conservatism.....what bullcrap.
The article says...
1 in 5 U.S. teens has serious mental disorder
This is a load of crap!
You may think it is a load of "crap", but I deal with that "crap" everyday, and guess what-it exists and I have chosen to be part of the solution.
cantakenomore's chosen name suggests 1 in 5 U.S. teen serious mental disorders are not limited to teenagers. The adult population is sick too.
Or simply just kooks, eh, Patrick?
So can take no more... Tell us what it is that you can't take anymore of and why you sound so frustrated.
Got it?
I wrote this for those infected with the conservative mindset.

cantakenomore: take a deep breath, calm down and listen to the tick-tock-tick of your clock.
T-Minus three weeks and counting.....
Not...
I know...it's just hard to sit back and watch it happen. Nov. 2nd, we vote. Nov. 3rd will be a glorious day indeed!

I never said to withhold treatment for those who are truly ill...I just don't believe 1 in 5...
Yeah. America still sucks-mainly because her citizens lack empathy for their own.
Yes this is numbers thats reported. Not from children who do not think they have a problem and in fact do.
I feel very selfish at times.
lol
lol

Nah, it's just part of being a teenager (for most).
No kidding, Zumia.
Duh. I'm pretty sure anyone who has or knows a teenager is aware of this.

Are you insinuating that we don't?
Again, are you implying that we don't?
There is plenty of discipline for us. Stop insinuating there isn't.
Well duhhhh ... in fact 5 in 5 teenagers have mental issues, and it's always been that way. This new crop of journalists are like babies who has just discovered their navels.
