My point is that, whenever there's a natural disaster anywhere, many religious zealots are quick to attribute it to God's wrath for homosexuality or some other sin... but mostly homosexuality. You hear it ALWAYS: Katrina, earthquake in Haiti, you name it...

In this case, Peter said that Uganda is being punished for banning homosexuality. He's using the same idiotic rationale that religious zealots use to explain natural disasters, against the very people that are wont to use them.

If it doesn't bring home the idocy of doing this, then Peter is right and Uganda must be on the receiving end of God's wrath for their hateful banning of homosexuality to the cruel degree of mudering their fellow man just because they are gay.

We actually have "shoe" drives in my nighborhood just for that reason, to send over there to the people who don't have any. Someone leaves a bag and a note, instructing you to put all the shoes you don't want anymore in the bag and leave it on the curb to be picked up. Don't know who does it, though. Sounds like a good idea.

To all those bashing lorraine....I just came back from a week photographing in the Phillipines....know what? about one million of them died in WW2 fight the japanese and protecting the many thousand US military people trapped in the phillipines after the same day bombing of pearl harbor and subic bay/manila (phillipines). Uh, how well we do what? Take from the poor and give to the rich? Buy Chinese products to the detriment of our own industries? Make war on anybody we THINK may have done something we don't like? Tell other countries they should go "green" while we refuse? The U.S. may be the richest and most powerful militarily but that doesn't mean we do everything better.

Most people around the world actually look down on Americans, even when they come here to live. I was brought up believing I was Irish/English even though my ancestors moved here a couple of hundred years ago. It was only in school that I developed an appreciation for being American.

To Tom Tripiciano--I hope what you wrote is a poor attempt at comedy. If it was, don't quit your day job. I spent a week in the Phillipines back in march, rented a car and drove around with a couple of local folks so i could meet and photograph life there.

I found people living in 20% of what we do, often with 5 to 8 kids (some because our "capitalist" condoms were too expensive to afford) and yet, i was offered at least a bowl of rice everwhere i went and the warmth of these people (who apparently are doing everything wrong in your mind) to a stranger was incredible. Never, ever experienced anything like it in nearly 6 decades of life here.

I'm not saying capitalism is inherently bad, but it is bad for some people and we would have a lot more friends in the world if we didn't try to cram McDonalds down their throats (yeah, micky D's is there and tastes as bad there as here).

Sorry Frank, actually, in Uganda, as well as in most all other African nations, HETEROsexuals are the main HIV population. In some nations, if a man dies, the tribal leader has sex with the widow and all other post-pubescent females in the family to "cleanse" them of whatever disease killed the husband - that type of belief and the high number of prostitutes (who get HIV from infected men and pass it on to others) in some areas have been identified in numerous studies as the main ways HIV is spread in Africa.

As to the new effort to pass laws punishing homosexuality by death in Uganda, there was a very detailed story in the big newspapers last week explaining that it is actually AMERICAN "Christian" leaders who are pushing for those laws and funding the effort. You can easily find the details online and discover who is behind it. They evidently are of the opinion that although the US has recognized that homosexuality is not a "choice" but a biological imperative, they can still convince the less educated, more superstitiously religious folks in Uganda to kill gay people - in fact, last week, a front page ad in a new Ugandan tabloid, paid for by American evangelical groups, listed the "top 100 suspected gays and lesbians in Uganda" along with their pictures and a yellow banner which read "Hang them." Since then a number of the people on the list have been attacked. It is pretty amazing the so-called "Christians" who claim to be "pro-life" would encourage the murder of those people, but there you have it - so much for the Commandments they claim to revere. As to the jigger infestation, that is no different than any other medical problem - in this case (as in many), the real issue is poverty, and the answer is money. Too bad those "Christians" like Rick Warren (one of those who has pushed the anti-gay legislation in Uganda) aren't spending their time and money fighting diseases like malaria and jiggers, worms and bedbugs - they could actually be improving lives and following the instructions of the Lord (love your neighbor, do unto others, etc.) instead of harrassing and spreading hatred toward those who are not exactly like themselves.
