Another ridiculous "study", statistical meaningless conclusions on risks that cannot be quantified using one single isolated factor alone. There are many factor involved, not only smoking. Moreover, 2 packs a day will most surely kill you before.
When will American physicians start to do some meaningful clinical research instead of rubbish that generates them instant publishing through interest groups and which will be completely vanquished 15 minutes later by another "study" funded by opposing interest groups.
I think studying something that drastically increases the risks of dementia is pretty worthwhile, especially given the fact that the US's babyboomers generation is starting to enter retirement age. As the author stated, dementia-related care is in the hundreds of billions of dollars, at least the quantative costs, not even including the emotional toll on a family dealing with a relative that walks out of there house in the middle of the night, or starts screaming in terror when they look in the mirror and don't recognize themselves.
Imright -
The "Truth Campaing" actually had such a noticeable effect on decreasing youth smoking rates in the US, that the tobacco companies started disputing the original settlement and stopped payment on the program. Theyve since shifted their marketing to the absolutely booming market of Asia, the smoking rates in China have exploded over the past 10 years.
I'm disturbed by the lack of numbers and lifestyles of the control group. They could have been using a bunch of olympic style athletes or something that would have shown the control group was participating in a lifestyle that decreases the chances.
Actually I'd be more interested in that type of number. Rather than focus on the negatives, focus on the ones that decrease diseases like this. All you can walk away from this as a non-smoker is..um....keep doing what you're doing even if it's eating fast food every day?
Rubbish is the correct term when a "study" does not take in account all factors involved. Moreover, a few years ago another "study" found out that smoking "actually prevented or delayed" the onset of dementia. Both articles have the exact same problem, isolating a factor to demonstrate whatever they want.
Again, we need valuable clinical studies and not "politically correct" results for interest groups
RamFla, you are 100 percent correct. Correlation is not causation. If most peole understood elementary statistics, they would also understand that studies such as the one in question are so elementary as to be trivial. Can these so-called "scientists" do no better? Or, are they so stupid they actually think their conclusions are interesting?
D.Man, I don't know if RamFla smokes; I don't smoke, yet I share his point of view because it is logical. I would bet that you're not a statistician or a mathematician. The words which are sloppily thrown about to SUMMARIZE the study (which is also artfully worded) mis-characterize the actual significance of the study's results. For example, suppose taking a certain drug "increases your risk of death by 1,000 percent!" Scary, right? But suppose the part that's left out is that your original "risk" (whatever that means) is 1 : 1 billion. Then even after a 1,000 percent increase in risk, it's still only 1: 100 million. Still scared?
But either way, in a free country, shouldn't I be allowed to take whatever PERSONAL risks I want?
If I live to be 90 and in a nursing home, I sincerely hope I have dimentia!
Why are all these people afraid of dying? It's going to happen and you can't stop it. After a certain age you're a burden on everyone and you want to live a very looong life?
I figure 70 is a good check out age - I'm very satisfied with my life up to this point, and every day there is less and less I can do physically, so why burden my wife and son? If you are the last surviving person from your High school class - no one will know it because all the rest of us are dead - tell us how the 80 year reunion was when you reach the other side...lol.
Apparently you've never watched anyone who has dementia... it's not pretty, it can linger for years, and the people who suffer from it are frequently terrified because they don't ever feel safe.
Do they think that the known health risks of smoking won't happen to them? Are they just kidding themselves?
The problem is that taxpayers and other insurance holders will end up bearing the $$ burden of providing medical care for their cancer, heart disease, and dementia just because these people chose to smoke despite the known killer consequences.
you know, ttmadison...demented people like you, who want to insult and blame every ailment, every `wasted` tax dollar, et al on smokers are usually the same jagoffs who, in the next breath, state that the gubment should legalize weed!
Do you not understand the `known` health risks as you shove that Bic Mac in your mouth, or you spend all evening with your fat ass on the couch...instead of exercising. Guess you don`t realize that booze, coffee, sugar, saturated fats, presciption meds, horse betting, driving, breathing, etc., all have side effects. You`re just kidding yourself if you don`t think so.
The point is, none of these studies, or critics like yourself, ever bother to compare the health or societal costs of alcoholism, drug addiction, obesity, gambling, POLLUTION, etc., because it doesn`t promote your politically correct, utopian BS agenda!
I don`t smoke, but I imagine smokers pay just as much in taxes as the drunk who gets public defence for his DUI charge....or the drug addict who gets free needles and drugs through social programs!
So come down off your cloud, or high horse...or whatever you`re on and tell me about your perfect recipe for longevity and your burdenless existence for your fellow taxpayers.
So simple: don't smoke, drink very moderately, if at all, eat lots of vegetables and fruit, avoid saturated fats............it may not be a perfect soluton, but it sure increases your chances for a long and high quality life. To think or act otherwise is just stupid.
ttmadison - ever here of "sin taxes"? Smokers pay more for your roads, and schools, and every other luxury you enjoy in the USA, than you will ever spend on Medicare that benefits the smoker. God bless smokers and drinkers (and one day weed smokers) - your sin taxes are greatly appreciated.
Judith - I'll take you down the road to Green Valley AZ - it is an old folks community - tell me what ratio of men to women you see - us guys don't live past 75 (on average) - so bring on the cigars and dancing women while we are here.
I remember a study not too long ago where they determined nicotine use (as in tobacco products) could help fight off dementia. I am sure in a few more years they will determine eating meat makes you more likely to suffer from dementia. These studies are generally worth less than the cost of the paper they use to print them out. I have known three people with dementia one never smoked the other two were light smokers who had both quit over 20 years before they had any problems. Does this mean I think smoking is good for people? No, but I am sick of these silly studies and the money spent on them!
Smoking causes all these health problems yet I'm more likely to get injured by a drunk driver or drunk with a gun or just beat by a drunk After" Almost himerz " They won't remember They smoked
I've been a heavy smoker since a teenager and haven't noticed any dementia. In fact, I've been a heavy smoker since a teenager and haven't noticed any dementia. In fact, I've been a heavy smoker since a teenager and haven't noticed any dementia. In fact, I've been a heavy smoker since a teenager and haven't noticed any dementia.
I don't know that I agree or disagree with this study, however, it seems like every new study proves something causes dementia or Alzheimers. Obesity also supposedly causes Alzheimers. I bet if I did a study, I could connect tofu to Alzheimers. Remember when it was aluminium? Right now, I know a lady who started developing Alzheimers and she never smoked in her life, and she is skinny as a post. SO, was it the mashed potatoes???
Its a Study to get MORE MONEY out of its PATIENTS.... THis Hospital is the WORST.... I could find a better hospital on the streets of Calcutta...LOL LOL LOL!!!
How can you agree or not agree with this study? You're not a scientist or staistician and you haven't read the hundreds of pages of the actual study, therefore you should just keep your hole shut.
"Right now, I know a lady who started developing Alzheimers and she never smoked in her life, and she is skinny as a post. SO, was it the mashed potatoes???"
Could be, if she cooked them in an aluminum pot. Seems some reseach was done that revealed that Alzheimer's victims have higher levels of this metal in their system than most. Several people I know ditched (recycled) their aluminum and opted for stainless steel.
Lung cancer and other respiratory diseases killed a person before this person has signs and symtoms of dementia. Or, this person's smoking habit has killed other people, second hand smoker before this one has sign and symptoms of dementia.
Smoking can cause other health issues, such as cardiacvascular diseases.
The study of dementia regarding to smoking is good but not significant enough to spend money to do such research/study.
I worked in a nursing home about 25 yrs. ago and there was this one man who was 105 yrs. old and he did have some dementia. He also had smoked 2 packs a day of Pall Mall non-filter cigs until he was 104. The home made him quit at 104 because he was accidently burning holes in the blankets and stuff. They were afraid he would catch the bed on fire and kill himself. Funny, that must be one of the "other" causes that kill smokers!
He always claimed it was the filters that will kill you.
Smoking two packs a day will definitley cause emphezema and heart disease. One would be lucky to live long enough for alzheimers to set in... but I could see a connection between restricted blood flow and alzheimers. Whether caused by cholesterol or arterial plaque. What about genetics and diet too?
My mother is almost 92 years old. Although never a heavy smoker, less than a pack a day, she quit a age 58; she now enjoys a vibrant, healthy life, visiting her nieces and nephews back East (we live in Arizona), enriching our lives and the lives of those around her. The message?? It's never too late and life can always be lived to its fullest. Viva La Emma!! No doubt genetics plays a part, but also reassessing and correcting one's bad habits and addressing good nutrition can lead to a wonderful life, regardless of one's age. Quit now!!!!!!! Live life!!!!!
On The Nature Of Death ~ An excerpt of Rod Serling's epilogue from the first episode of Twilight Zone.
" Last stop on a long journey, as yet another human being returns to the vast nothingness that is the beginning ... and into the dust that is always the end."
Regardless of our choices, or their consequences, not one of Earth's 7 Billion inhabitants is getting off the planet alive. Fini.....
people who do study do it for 1 thing>>>>(money) been smoking for 42 yrs 3 packs a day and feel like a 23 year old. it really sorry that goverment for over 50 years and still today took taxes from big tabacco and they didnt have to pay a dime for the suit tabacco giants had to pay what a scam. am surprise the tabacco giants didnt go after the goverment for half the money. and where all the smokers rights? we want resturants and bars so we can go out and relax. it discrimination against smokers like all the air heads out there saying they want smoke free places. that fine if you want smoke free places so you can take the kids>(quote. well we want to go out and eat and drink and have a place of our own to that why we got signs and there should be the same for both sides. we want smoking resturants and bars for our confort and not be discriminated against........ and guess what were all gonna die sooner or later you cant cheat death!!!!!!!lol
Now it causes dementia, eh? Ya, sure. Along with warts, it'll make you sterile, go bald, gives you bad knees, slurs your speech....Oh, come ON. Sure, it may not be food for you, but give me a break. I could fall downstairs, crack my head and die. Any number of things can kill me. If I were that afraid, I'd never leave home. Besides, if I get dementia from my smoking, how the hell will I remember what killed me in the first place? Sounds like a win-win for me!
I smoked for 40 years, and personally really liked to smoke..... would still be smoking.... but dragging the oxygen tank around, stops that.. mostly I am not a pain in the ass ex smoker.
lets Talk about Harry Reid and his Aide who was married to an illegal Lebanese national who was investigated about bombings in our Country. Why does Harry Reid get a pass on this. Liberals at MSNBC care about us and want us to be safe. This should be front page and liberals should be just as mad as Republicans and Democrats. What Harry did is illegal and you can't tell me he did not know the status of his aide, they know everything about their people. Also will the Mormon Church be excommunicating Harry Reid for breaking the law? Reid embraces his religion and that is Mormonism how do you liberals and democrats feel about him now? Reid needs to resign over this to show that he does have some integrity left, his son needs to go with him and the Mormon church needs to excommunicate both of them

After a careful review of myriad data, scientists succinctly determine that life results in death.
I thought we fined the tobacco companies into bankruptcy years ago.
That and THE TRUTH CAMPAIGN WERE DESIGNED TO STOP SMOKING.
FILLING THE STATES WITH BILLIONS IN FINES AGAINST BIG TOBACCO.
STOP SMOKING YOU LOOK STUPID
"Rubbish", eh RamFla? A current smoker are we?

You DON'T smoke anyway, the cigarette SMOKES, you're just the sucker.
A Vet....LOL...that is so true...and the government and the tobacco companies laugh at the suckers all the way to the bank!!!!

So, rather than quit, you should keep smoking and drop dead from something else. That way you won't linger on annoying everyone.
Ha!
Wonder what the rates are among heavy drinkers? Duh

like cigarettes and puts out bogus studies.
A hundred years ago the "average" person died at age 47. Can I now infer they were all heavy smokers?
you can infer that antibiotics hadn't been discovered yet and that medical science was still in its infancy.
duh.
Actually, that's only b/c infant mortality was so high and skewed the numbers.
