This is all very well and good, but do not expect this to be the be-all-and-end-all of polio. Polio is caused by a virus. Viruses do a couple of things very well. One of them is looting their host of everything they need and moving on. The other is mutating. They not only do it well, many of them do it often. It doesn't take much of a mutation to negate a vaccine.
Aside from that, there is always that set of parents who refuse to immunize their children who will keep dread diseases alive forever.
They would actually have to have the disease to spread it. Just by one's choice to not vaccinate does not mean they are actually responsible for "keeping diseases alive". Other nominees include people who don't vaccinate because of ignorance or laziness, people who would but lack resources to, people whom the vaccine fails in which is much higher than people are led to believe.
Technically, by this logic, disease should only "spread" among the unvaccinated. And if it's the conscientiously unvaccinated then they assume that risk.But unfortunately this is not the case. The vaccinated also spread disease and get sick.
If one wants to talk about the immunocompromised then they better start coming with numbers, statistics, and evidence instead of just saying "what about the kid who has cancer"

The oral polio vaccine should not be given at all, for precisely the reason Robert pointed out above. In some instances it can make children very sick. Unfortunately the political and economic climate drives that decision.

Vaccines work by making it so that an entire population is resistant to a disease and the disease never takes hold. The fact that some people are not actually immunized even after taking the vaccine is exactly why it is imperative to vaccinate the entire population. If the disease has so few vectors (people) from which to spread, then those people who possess no immunity from the vaccine do not have a route to be infected, because most other people around them are immune and not infected.
This is also the exact reason that vaccination cannot be a "choice". If 20% of the population declines vaccination, then you may as well not vaccinate anyone because the disease will take hold in that population and infect people, including some that were vaccinated but didn't get the required immunity.
Vaccinations only work as designed when they're mandated for the entire population, and this is the way it should be.
As to the fact that the vaccination itself carries risk, what would you rather have? 69 people die from the vaccination or 69,000 die of the disease? It's simple numbers.

Yes, we all get the fact that no one likes deaths from vaccines. But when you compare the alternative of tens of thousands dead each year from preventable illness (according to the statistics you gave from the CDC), the choice is clear.

Vaccination falls under right to privacy, among other things. In general, the government is prohibited from interfering with your right to privacy unless there is a societal good that outweighs the right. I believe vaccination falls under that provision as a public health issue.
It's the same reason that it's against the law to go urinate in the street. Theoretically you have a right to choose to do that if you fear getting a disease from a public toilet, but for the good and cleanliness of society, it's prohibited. Same thing here with vaccination -- the bottom line is that fewer people in the society suffer and die when everyone gets vaccinated. End of story.
Did you read about deaths earlier this year in California from Whooping Cough (pertussis)? Have you ever seen a kid cough until he vomits as a result of this disease? And you would advocate avoiding a vaccination for it? Yes, you are most certainly "misinformed".

Anyone who is vaccinated may indeed spread something, and/or may still get the disease. That is a fact, and that's exactly why everyone has to be vaccinated against a disease in order to beat it. If the bacterium/virus can't establish a foothold in the population, the disease doesn't effectively spread, even though there are people who have low or no immunity because the vaccine wasn't effective on them. Those people are still protected because everyone else around them is protected. That's also why adults typically don't need to get revaccinated in their adult years even though the immunity has worn off -- the kids are vaccinated so the adults never come into contact with an infected person.
Whether the vaccine is toxoid-based or not is irrelevant. How much power the vaccine has is not very relevant, so long as it's above a certain threshhold. You apparently are not understanding the mechanics of how the vaccine is supposed to protect an entire society.

What you're describing, Penquin is called herd immunity. I know very well what it is and yes the vaccine being toxoid is VERY relevant to herd immunity. When writing about Polio erradication, it is important to mention that the original intiative, and much of the work, originated with Rotary International, the organization composed of more than 30,000 Rotary clubs around the world, and its fundraising and volunteer work to ried the world of this crippling disease. Much of the work that Rotary has done goes unnoticed. Please give credit where credit is due.
Because our government has control over the vaccine supply, I would have a very difficult time getting vaccinated against Anthrax and Smallpox; the two most likely virus's to be used in a biological attack. It is good when we the people have control over our medical care instead of the government
So first of all - in answer to those who believe vaccines eliminated polio - they didn't. In fact, they contributed to the development of a more robust version of polio.
Secondly, as the article states "Polio, which spreads in areas with poor sanitation"...give a big clue as to why polio isn't seen as often as it once was. It's not the vaccine that controlled it, it's sanitation. Introducing improved sanitation and clean water is too hard and doesn't return a profit like vaccines do, so rather than improve living conditions or find ways to do so at a reasonabe cost to improve living conditions world-wide, billions are spent concocting another vaccine which in turn will lead to even more mutated and robust strains.
Viruses, unlike the vaccine developers, embrace the concept of evolution. They go about the business of evolution quite effectively and diligently as long as environmental conditions are favorable. Science, on the other hand, appears to think iving things are frozen in time and there is something abnormal when the real world does not fit their model. The are partially correct. The abnormal something is the "science" and marketing of vaccines for any purpose.

Vaccines of course didn't eliminate polio, but they did stop the spread of the disease.
As for the sanitation issue -- ever wonder if it's because those in less sanitary areas are not fully vaccinated or that the vaccination rate is less than that of the overall population? Hmmm...could be the real root cause here.

It is impossible to say the vaccine is responsible with certainty because of the confounders involved. In the U.S and europe disease declined before vaccines were introduced and after vaccine were introduced they continued that decline. Most Viruses that we Vaccinate for need a human host for long term survival. As one poster said sanitation has reduced Polio. just as sanitation reduces passing on colds & flu. Sanitation alone will not eradicate it. You need to Eliminate it from the human hosts to stop it forever.
If people in 4 or 5 countries would cooperate, Polio could be totally eradicated with in 3 to 5 years. Once eradicated they'll monitor for any new outbreaks for about another 5 years. If theirs an outbreak, they will vaccinate those within that zone. If there are no new outbreaks within 5 years anywhere in the world, Polio will be declared eradicated. There will be no need to vaccinate anyone for Polio again.
What you should Fear is this. The Organizations trying to Eradicate Polio have said that if support, cooperation, & funding to complete there plan isn't forth coming, they will drop all their efforts. Should this happen Polio is expected to spread all over the world. It will happen fairly fast as we are a very mobile world. Part of the problem eradicating it. Only takes one carrier to travel outside of a zone. It'll mutate & infect even those of us today that are immune. Their frustrations are because they nearly Eradicated it before, but was thwarted because of civil wars in several countries.
Small Pox was Eradicated. No one receives Small Pox Vaccinations today. There is no Small Pox to be contracted. The only Small Pox strains known to exist in the world are in Russia and the U.S. There maintained as a precaution. They fear some radical may have some that could be released onto the world. When they're confident that this is not the case, These final 2 strains will be destroyed. In Fact the primary risk/threat of contracting Small Pox is in maintaining these 2 samples. By doing some research to see who new what they were talking about on these Vaccine Articles, I learned a few things.
1. That the vast majority of vaccines don't contain Thimerosal (Mercury) today & haven't for many years. In fact most never did. It's also being eliminated as fast as they can develop and test new vaccines for those few that still do. Today's technology allows vaccines to stay viable long enough to be effective without it. In the past this wasn't possible. Aside from all the hoopla, You can actually receive more exposure to mercury in a can of tuna then from any vaccination.
2. The World Health Organization is watching the Polio Eradication plan closely. There watching for PROOF of CONCEPT that the world can cooperate to accomplish the plan.
If they can accomplish their plan, the WHO has determined that Eradicating Measles, Mumps and Rubella among others may be possible within 20 years. Thus eliminating most or all childhood vaccination. Eliminating these illnesses would save the world 100's of Billions a year in treatment and medical care indefinitely.
For those who are uninformed. Apparently many childhood diseases don't hit & go away. If your the lucky one who just suffers an inconvenience at the time with no major problems or death your not safe yet. Many health problems of older Generations today are being traced back to childhood diseases. Some cases of Blindness, Heart defects, liver problems & many other ailments appear to be directly connected to genetic damage caused by many of these viruses. Similar to when you injure yourself when your young & it heals up fine, but when you get older it hurts like hell. Worse then when you were injured.
Before reading up on this I had never considered that most viruses could be Eradicated. Like Most I Never really thought about it. I just new that every generation before me grew up & accepted it as a part of life. I knew my generation was the first to be able to avoid some of them due to vaccines. Some that are available today weren't when I was a kid.
Theoretically we could also Eradicate the Flu. The Flu actually travels around the world with the seasons. By the time it gets back around to us it's mutated. Therefore we have minimal immunity to it. They track it as it moves and try to have a vaccine that compensates enough for the mutations to be effective. This is why the vaccine is never a 100% & sometimes less effective.
With recent technology advances they think they may have found a new target point that's identical to all Flu strains that never mutates. It may be possible to stop it in it's tracks. At the very least it could mean a once for life Flu shot.
In time pneumonia & colds may also be able to be eradicated. Pneumonia vaccines are available & about 88% effect. Good for about 10 years.

Let's face it...polio will not go the way of smallpox because our society is now globalized, and we're inevitably spreading the disease around the globe with unvaccinated people traveling throughout the world. Think of all the travelers that arrive in the U.S. every single day. Smallpox was eradicated in a vastly different world than what that in which we now live. Unfortunately, our global economy prevents us from maintaining a hold on worldwide disease. Look at how SARS or any other disease spread worldwide in a matter of days. Trying to contain it just isn't possible nowadays.
So continue to vaccinate, as the threat will always be there.
What do you mean environment? How long does polio virus live in the environment? What is your plan to eradicate it from the rocks that you think it lives under? If your theory is the correct one it would be a wast of resources to even attempt polio eradication because vaccines couldn't even theoretically wipe it out.

Correct, hardly anyone has immunity because they didn't get it. That doesn't mean that it wasn't dangerous when you did come into contact with it. Unlike polio and measles, it was not very contagious and was very hard to spread (needed consistent exposure to come down with it), therefore it died out. Not so with measles, which spreads like wildfire because it is very contagious (i.e. easily spread). Pathetic attempt, Robert. You know better.
What you haven't shown is how long? THAT is what's important. Not that virus survives for 30 seconds on a doorknob. How long does the virus survive outside of the host? You know why you are evading this question? It is relevant.

Robert, SARS spread in days. I don't have it because I didn't contact anyone with it. The reason we didn't continue to see it here was that (if you read the rest of the article by your experts), you have to be IN CLOSE CONTACT and get it via infected droplets of a sneeze, cough, etc. or via physical touching of surfaces that have been coughed on, etc. That makes it more difficult than many other viruses to get. Oh, and that's another example of a virus that survives in the environment! You get it from touching surfaces in the environment! You proved that your own theory was incorrect -- way to go!
As for measles, it survives long enough to still create outbreaks when unvaccinated people persist in society. So obviously, it's still out there. It's not like one guy still has it and comes to these towns and infects. The virus is still in the environment. When you pick up the virus, you're contagious, even if you don't come down with the illness (thank the vaccine for not getting sick).

As a survivor of the 1950's polio epidemics all I have to say is "if only one child is prevented from going through what I did as a child and as a re-victim of this disease who endures what is known as post polio syndrome; forget the scientific data and do what is right for every child in the world: vaccinate!"

I was only eleven months old! Also the only one of six children to get sick. No immune system compromises at all! My Mom was pregnant and not allowed to see me until she delivered, 3 months later, and had the new baby and siblings vaccinated. I had all three forms of the virus which is true for most who are left with residual paralysis. Salk's vaccine was distributed to children in the city I was raised in three days after I was admitted to the hospital. I spent my first birthday in a hospital only for polio patients. I shared a bed with another child because there were so many of us! I know that many believe the vaccines cause other isssues and that may be true, but I had my kids vaccinated and have made sure my grandchildren have been also. I would rather deal with the potential side effects than watch any person go through the hell I did! Check out some of the info on the polio hospitals now opened in India, look at those children and tell me we should not do something to stop this disease. I wishh you well and that your progeny be blessed and vaccinated!

Robert, I was reminded of you last night while watching The Office. Dwight was "helping" everyone by having everyone sneeze on each other and get them sick so that they would get the antibodies to everyone's viruses. It showed the ridiculousness of your argument to a T. You probably saw nothing wrong with it, though, which is my point.
