I would like to see the statistics of cancer rates for Wyoming compared to the rest of the nation. The article failed to mention that Sweeden has the highest smokeless rate in Europe but the lowest cancer rates. It would be nice to compare american snus to the snus in Sweeden to see if American snus has more carcinogens. I don't use tobacco regularly but belive maybe we should look at harm reduction as opposed to prohobition as a way to improve health. I think e-cigs and tobaco free snus are some possibilities that could really save lives.
perhaps the lower cancer rates in Sweden can be attributed to their generally much healthier living conditions overall, including better diets, less pollution, and a comprehensive national health care program. given so many positive factors, the detrimental effects of tobacco use may be less obvious. Americans who use tobacco are often (though not always) lower in the economic scale, likely to live in areas that are under served by health care or unable to afford health care, more likely to have a diet and lifestyle high in cancer-risk-factors, and less likely to exercise and have overall good health. I'm not sure that simply making tobacco products 'lower risk' will really make a huge impact, given all of the other likely health negatives in the equation. I do not discount at all though, that most tobacco users are getting some measure of perceived pleasure and enjoyment from their pastime and are willing to shoulder the risks. right up until they get a cancer diagnosis. (sigh) nothing is ever simple, is it?
Gross I hate those people that carry bottles to spit in around with them. They act like it's some kind of trophy....."look I filled this bottle up with brown saliva and chewed up tobacco, it only took me a week of carrying this thing around to do it."
60 min did an expose a few years ago. Apparently US tobacco companies grow tobacco in places like Paraguay that is so high in nicotine that it can't be grown here. It is imported as a product of Paraguay (thanks NAFTA) and used in cigarettes here. I have no doubt the same is true of chew.
Ha,ha,ha! If someone had told me these two states were leading in terbaccy chaw'n, I would have thought it a stereotypical joke and (pardon the pun) in bad taste.
Kodiak for me!
