I personally drink 2 oz. of my own urine daily for a week before a race right before going to bed and have found it to increase my endurance by 30% !Let me know how it works. I sometimes add a little cranberry juice to it, depending on what I've eaten that day
I work in dialysis, for which severe muscle cramps are a common complication. Our first go-to for bad cramps? Pickles. They work like a charm. Just beware, the sodium can raise your blood pressure!
I drink organic Apple cider vinegar and raw honey (tablespoon of each) in a glass of ice water to dissapate lactic acid build up in my muscles. I learned this from an old Romanian weightlifting coach. Works great.
Kombucha anyone? Actlually a vinegar with billions of living enzyms and a 2000 year old writen history. It is available in stores, although the FDA doesn't like it, and you can make it as do I. I'm 68 years old. It works great, takes me through Bikram hot yoga, ballroom dancing, long hikes, and increaes the libido.
I'm 86 and have been on a strong diet of supplements for years (including magnesium) and I'm still going strong! I found taking my vities straight rather than food the best!

The dude drinking "beetroot(?![presumably that's beet juice])" juice needs to go off of that dietary regimen for a length of time that will return his urine to a normal color just to check whether he may have some kind of kidney issue(s). Which is to say, eating beets or just drinking beet juice will temporarily turn one's "pee" bright red. There are certain kidney conditions which might also turn the urine red.
Volunteers gave out sports jelly beans during my first marathon, and they really helped. I could only eat a few at a time, but the added sodium and sugar stretched out over several miles gave me the boost I needed during the boring Miles 9-15 stretch where not a whole lot happens. Helps you keep up saliva production while throwing a little extra energy your way, without adding to that full feeling in your stomach that can make running really uncomfortable.
I agree Sustain Sport drink and the Access Bars (choc caramel kruncher are my personal fav!) are the best! I always used to get TERRIBLE shin pain but...not anymore. Way-to-go Shalane!!!
Those who eat a lot of salt/sodium seem to want/need more and more and more. I wonder whether the pickle juice is significant for adding anything other than sodium?
In the past the food supply did not contain as much sodium as today and distance runners did not seem to need large amounts during events. Drinks like sugared iced tea and cola were sometimes consumed. As well as water of course.
three tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before each meal works for runners, and every adult, for that matter. pickle juice is a fad. apple cider vinegar helps with cramps, colon health and regulates blood suger, helps insulin do its job. forget the pickle juice. most of it contains yellow dye.
Most of this sounds gross. Should just mix it altogether and gag it down. :)~
Heard of people drinking apple cider vingear and causing damage to their throat.
I agree with the comments, most of this sounds psychological. Just like when cold to think hot thoughts or vice versa. ~ Just do it ~ - Nike logo works for me.
I started eating two Ramen Cup Noodles before races two years ago when I ran a 1/2 marathon. Must be the sodium and carbs, because I feel more energetic and perform better.
I too am partial to doing the urine thing, usually 10 days before any big strenuous event. A diet of curry appears to have the best effect on urine taste. Gives it a slightly sweet aromatic tang
If you can't find beet root juice, just make your own with a juicer, and add the greens for extra nutrients. That's where I've always gotten my fruit or vegetable juices. Healthier than bottled or concentrate because it has live enzymes and fresh vitamins and minerals.
My husband is a fighter and the pickle juice is our standby. He can also tell if he is dehydrated by the taste. If it taste sweet he is dehydrated. Oranges are also on hand for my children for the same reason. Nothing beats plain water but sometimes our bodies do need a bit of help.
The cherry juice does make sense....People have been using black cherry juice forever to fight gout. It will work faster and better than the medications perscribed. And it's only 4 dollars a bottle!
when I was about 5 years old I got into some pickle juice- with my older sister - needless to say we did notmake it to church that Sunday and in a one bath house fought over the toliet
personale a liquid trace mineral is the best it has everything.try it you will be schocked at the results. the longer you use it the better it gets

I will try the pickle juice starting today. I have a marathon on Sunday the 14th. I don't think I will be able to update. I hope it works.

I chew a handful of fresh, lightly salted, raw baby spinach leaves slowly and to a pulp every 3 miles. Its like your own energizer battery.

Kombucha actually saved my life. the doctors got rich off of me, but no more. Kombucha solved it all.
Sounds psychological. If you believe it helps you it will.

Two words Steroids! Works wonders. But seriously, the key is eating enough so that you aren't burning more calories than you are consuming.
I used to run but now I don't because marathons and stuff are not good for your joints.

Used to drink pickle juice in HS track. It works.

I'll definitely try the others!
I sit home and watch golf. Don't have to worry about strange chemicals I'm putting in my body.
Nothing crazy, Just sustain sport baby and access bars! Go Shalane Flanagan.

After mile 20, I always like to get a nice iced coca cola. Don't know why, but it always does the trick!

I have used a couple of these and some in combination (e.g., pickles, pretzels, and cola). I also like tomato juice or V8.
